irina nica portfolio Architect MSc. + MAA The way people experience space has been my driven force through most of my designs, as I always pursue the embodiement of a strong statement in the most human simple and symbolic way. It is my strong belief that by practicing an architecture of meaning we, as architects, regain the demiurgic character needed to change the world for the better. Idealistic in my beliefs, with strong education in both technic and artistic architecture, I am now seeking for a an architect position to further develop myself professionally and personally.

FREDERIKSGÅRD SKOLE | MATTERS School in Copenhagen tasks: concept design diagrams 2d drawings status: built Frederiksgård Skole is a comissioned project in which the task was to design the new addition of the school. This is meant not only to connect the accesses in the existing building but also to provide a flowing new space around a big inner garden that can offer a different experience to the children while they commute from one classroom to another. Teaming up with CASA Arkitekter - who were responsible for the conversion of the existing building, we have been working with playful curved lines and a clean design (slopes were used to connect in one clean surface all the different leveled accesses) intending to create a unitary, flowing connection that simultanously offers hide-away spaces, stimulating childrens' play and imagination.

Main project, housing developed together with Tetris and Rasmus Friis in Ørestad, south of Royal Arena, Copenhagen Skovkvarteret II is the continuation of Skovkvarteret I in Ørestad. I have joined the project when it entered into the main project phase and worked also on followups. It consists of 1 tower and 11 blocks of rowhouses, all of it being modelled in Archicad, while using IFC models as the main format for information exchange between the different diciplines involved in the project. The first project this size I was ever involved in which some residents alreadt have moved in.

FALKEVEJ | main project - Sangberg Architects Housing in Nørrebro, Copenhagen tasks: main drawings modelling in Archicad size: 1750m2 status: built This townhouse project fills an empty corner plot between Falkevej and Nordre Fasanvej in Copenhagen’s northwest quarter. The goal was to create a project which takes its inspiration from this architectural context while making a simple, sustainable and contemporary residential building. The composition of the building’s facade references the rhythms of adjacent buildings, and its materiality is inspired by the broad range of historic brick architecture found in the local area. The brickwork is chosen to give a subtle play of colour and texture to the facades and the windows are made in the elevations with clarity, large square openings in the brickwork, responding to the composition of neighbouring building facades.

For at skabe kontrast til teglens levende ud spinkelt detaljerede sorte vinduesrammer.

Vi har valgt at beklæde taget med sort tagp

en efterbehandles med betonlasur i gylden n
ven på de ydre facaders murværk for at giv og sammenhængende udtryk.
Den lyse overf lade er valgt for at trække så drummet som muligt.
Efterbehandling af betonoverf laderne med
ger betonelementernes levetid betragteligt o sket patinering af de nordvendte facader.
Betonlasuren giver med sin let metalliske gl sten eksklusiv karakter og glød.

FÆLLESHUS SYDLEJREN | concept design - MATTERS Hangar conversion into a community center, Værløse Flyvestation tasks: concept design diagrams 2d drawings The conversion has its starting point in preserving most of the character of the place and building a new community house within the existing skin. Natural elements have been inserted and a path all though the building has been created to emphasize even more the connection between the building and the wild, lush surroundings. The building itself can open up completely, thus accessible from all around it due to the pivoting perforated metal doors. Water and plants are both part of the interior and exterior adding a biological touch to the industrial framework. The choice of the materials and together with the details (holes in the arched concrete roof) all work together into creating this fusion between textures, perceptions and time layers.

A housing project developed in the vecinity of Bella Center, Ørestad where the architectural expression is taken literal and wraps around the local plan constraints (fx. height constraints ) and the surrounding build environment (for the choice of brick colors). There has been a special attention and studies for the facade rythm and windows positioning as well as for a direct connection for the apartments in the groundfloor to the outside. Besides working on the main phase of the project, I have also been responsible for the set up and coordination of the 3D model, IFC files exchange with the engineers, quality assurance and delivery according to the ICT agreement.

NEW AARCH|competition - BCVA School of Architecture, Aarhus, Denmark tasks: 2D drawings
The proposal for the open design competition of a new architecture school in Aarhus, Denmark, approaches the development more as a masterplan rather than a building design. Therefore, the existing buildings ont he site are kept and together form a division line between the east and west parts of the site. The south side is optimal for public functions with the architecture school as the centrepoint. The north side of the site will be more private and a good place for a mixed residential and commercial neighborhood. The main concept of the building is to define a large open common space in the centre of the school that will function as an eclosed interior street space from where all the programs in the school can be reached. The common spaces became highly flexible. Programatically, the school is made up of a series of volumes dimensioned for an optimized use of space.

ELSELLILEVEJ | main project - MATTERS Addition to a family house in Copenhagen, Denmark tasks: project leader design and detailing
The project consists of an addition to an existing brick house in a residential neighbourhood of Copenhagen. The entire new part is to be constructed in timber onto a concrete floor, adding to a total of 30 sqm + terrase. It is meant to be cladded in timber planks as thin as 50 mm, and cladded with gipsum on the interior. The space is meant to be used as an extension of the living room and also a stronger connection between the outdoors and indoors due to a large number of openings (sliding glass doors, skylghts.)

KILDEGÅRDEN | competition - BCVA Masterplan - culture and education, Roskilde, Denmark tasks: sections, visualizations
Kildegården masterplan proposal for the transformation of the former army barracks area of Roskilde into a culture, sport and leisure powerhouse. The design includes a House of Arts, active outdoor areas and a masterplan with urban densification for the former military area in Roskilde. Kildegården is close connection with the center of Roskilde and other close nodes and thus an important hub in the structure of the city. With a semi-private character, the new masterplan treates the connections and entrances to the new development in a hierarchical mode. The two main connections to the area are from Roskilde Sports Park in the south and the main entrances to the north. Between them a guideline is established which underlines this north-south connection. The track connects to all the cultural features indoor and outdoor. Most of the existing surfaces are reused in the central area in order to offer a flexibility and possible layering for the new space.

KILDEGÅRDEN SOM KNUDEPUNKT I BYEN Kildegården er i tæt forbindelse med Roskilde centrum og andre nære knudepunkter. Kildegården fungerer i sammenhæng med disse knudepunkter med er i høj grad også selv et knudepunkt og mødested for Roskildes børn og voksne.

21 FORBINDELSER TIL14HELE BYEN Noget af det som gør Kildegården til et vigtigt knudepunkt er at der er forbindelser ud til alle dele af Roskilde. Bygningsstrukturen ligger spredt og danner et område hvor man kan bevæge sig på kryds og tværs. Således bliver Kildegården et naturligt sted både at cykle igennem og få en god oplevelse, når man skal videre rundt i byen, men
MARKERING AF INDGANGE TIL OMRÅDET Kildegården ligger med en markeret kant rundt om området, der gør at stedet hemmeligt og gemt væk når man kommer udefra. Dette giver i sig selv kvaliteter til de centrale områder, der ligger beskyttet for biltrafik og uro, men man må gerne vide hvordan man kommer ind. Derfor er det vigtigt at indgangene til området bliver markeret
HOVEDFORBINDELSEN: SPORET Hieraki mellem forbindelserne. De to vigtigste forbindelser til området er fra Roskilde Idrætspark i syd og selve hovedindgange i nord. Herimellem etableres en ledelinie: sporet, som understreger denne nord-sydgående forbindelse. Man kan bruge sporet som wayfinding og den kobler alle de kulturelle funktioner indendørs og udendørs sam-
INDGANGE ORIENTERES MOD SPORET Sporet binder hele bebyggelsen sammen. Alle pladser og bygninger henvender sig ud mod sporet og det er derfor naturligt at alle bygningerne har indgang fra denne side.
NYE BYGNINGER PLACERES UD MOD SPORET De nye bygninger Bevægelsescenteret og Kunstens hus lægges naturligt ud mod sporet hvorved de hægter sig på aktiviteterne i de centrale uderum. Adgang foregår fra hovedforbindelsen. Bevægelsescenteret har ligeledes nem adgang fra syd, hvor der er bilparkering og kissn’ride.
EKSISTERENDE FLADER GENANVENDES I CENTRALOMRÅDET Foruden sporet anlægges nye byrum og aktivitetsflader i de centrale uderum. Pladserne anlægges hvor det giver bedst mening ifht. eksisterende belægninger, således at et højt niveau af genanvendelighed finder sted. Disse steder kan således også nemt anlægges etapevis.
BILTRAFIK OG PARKERING Kildegården tilgodeser cyklister og gående, hvorfor de centrale byrum er på deres præmisser. Cykelparkering placeres ved bygningernes indgange. Man kan som fodgænger og cyklist frit bevæge sig rundt i området. Biler holder sig i periferien af området. Stort set al parkering foregår syd for bevægelsescenteret, hvor der også etableres
BREMERHAVEN | sketch proposal - Polyform Architects Masterplan - culture and education, Roskilde, Denmark tasks: 2D drawings 3D model presentation materials The proposal for the mixed-use complex is situated on the Columbus Street in Bremerhaven, very close to the old harbour, in an area with a great potential for development which is characterized by a hybrid mix of architectures, standards and life. The aim is to strengthen the connections between the shopping area from the inner city to the harbour where cultural points of interests are also placed - The Emigration Museum and The Climate House. The old Bremerhaven block structure, with green courtyard, is the cornerstone for the development, added to which materiality and facade detailing provide dynamism and a new look to an area which can obtain a strong recreational character,

LUND STADSHALLEN| competition - Sangberg Achitects Rennovation, transformation of the old city hall tasks: 2D drawings 3D modelling
Organised by the municipality of Lund, Norway the competition's aim was to revitalise the old city hall and turn it into a community center where a multitude of activities can be held and becomes more inviting towards the big public. Without changing too much of the original layout we have focused on creating more open and flexible spaces which can be used from a cafe to an amphitheatre due to their metamorphic qualities. Everything is thus temporary, only the original big halls remain where they were and aquire new finishing in order to make them stand out from the rest.

SUNDBO|concept design - Sangberg Achitects Senior housing community in Sundparken, Copenhagen tasks: concept design 2D drawings + modelling size: ca. 1900m2 The senior housing association Sundbo represents a new form of housing concept with sharing culture, local engagement and meals as the core values. The senior community housing association Sundbo, fsb and Realdania have developed the framework, and has, in cooperation with FUTU and Sangberg, created the first senior housing community in Sundby on Amager. The community will be built in The Municipality of Copenhagen, which has a declared goal to become a CO2-neutral capital in 2025. The Senior Community community integrates a number of sustainable initiatives that support the municipality's environmental ambitions, amongst which being fsb's first wooden housing project. The sketches for the senior housing community are currently included in the local plan work and they will be subjected for political approval in the Municipality of Copenhagen.

CULTURAL ISLAND OF RISøR
The island has been designed in order to offer a landmark which integrates traditional values and modern aspirations, In connection with the strong sense of community which characterizes nordic culture, the island has been conceived as an organism, a new community within an old one. By considering it a unity, the functions have been assigned in different buildings, the island itself becoming symbolically an entrance hall, a platform which catalyzes the elements. The focus building of the island incorporates an exhibition space and a concert hall and it has been designed in strong connection with the existing shipyard. Not only that it represents a statement of traditions and history but the shipyard is also the most imposing building in the area, regarding its footprint. Its value is enhanced by the added building which is conceived around the existing structure - it is built within the shipyard and in timber, a material which subordinates steel (the material of the shipyard) in terms of structural strength. UBERSEERING CITY NORD| compeition - Polyform Architects Open competition, mixed used program tasks:2D plan drawings and physical model
The competition took a starting point into the characteristic of the area of City Nord large scale, landscape and complexity. Large-scale urban developments with sculptural building volumes define the architectural context. The brief tries to reason with its context and infrastructure, thus 66,000 m2 of gross floor area are arranged in order to maximize green space, increase the quality of living and provide comercial and business functionalities, mixing both the human scale and urban-social qualities.

BASRAH GENERAL HOSPITAL | concept design - EXHIBIT Comissioned proposal for a hospital in Basrah, Iraq tasks: 2D drawings, 3D model, presentation material
The site is part of a larger area situated in the southern part of Basrah that will be developed as a medical district. The project represents an updated version. A complete re-organisation of space has been done targeting on providing not only a better aesthetics but also a better functionality with a strong focus on allowing as much natural light as possible. The total build area is 28.953 sqm and suggested height of 38 m (7 storeys including groundfloor). The project has been carried out following consistent guidelines provided by the Iraquian Ministry of Health.

The site provides a spectacular view towards the old part of the city. Wishing to enhance views towards the surroundings and following the steepness of the site, three rectangular volumes have been placed one on top of the other. With a built surface of aprox 400 sqm the house has 3 bedrooms, an office and a fitness room. In terms of materiality, concrete and stonework have been chosen to create an elegant and minimal apprearance

BOOKTEAK | master thesis - Ion Mincu University Rehabilitation and conversion of a historical building into a multifunctional bookstore in Brasov, Romania individual project tasks: 2D drawings, 3D model, illustrations, renderings, physical model The building chosen for conversion into a multi-functional bookshop is situated in the old historic centre of Brasov, Romania. The proposal aims to consolidate the social, comercial and cultural aspects of the area, since once they were very strong portrayed through the occasional events taking place here. The approach has been simplified in order to achieve a clean design with nordic influences. The cafe was integrated as a part of the multi-functional bookstore with a design based on Euro-pallet modules. Some of the furniture is based on the concept presented by` the students from Aalto University for the project of Helsinki Pavilion. The chairs belong to the architect Philip Tidwell and to the firm Martela&Trash Design. The attic is converted into a multi-functional (art exhibitions, conferences, book launch, press release) based also on the Euro-pallet concept.

A PLACE TO SIT | Tectonic workshop FURNitecture, tectonic theory and experimentation in practice. Aalborg University, Denmark The workshop was meant to explore the tectonic relation between furnitecture, architecture and construction both theoretically and practically. Following a simple principle of itnerlocking plywood plates which also gives stability, a clean dynamic shape is born. It suggests both a gesture of folding materiality and movement. The human scale has constantly been a reference point throughout the process thus resulting various options for relation to the human body. One can sit on the object, lean against it, or sit next to it due to its folded shape that gives both a sense of enclosure and disclosure.
