Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

The diagram are opposed to signifying and symbolic operations. Diagraming construction can produce organisation with multiple readings. By constructing diagram, it can expand our perception to domains beyond our experiental konwledge, and control and accurately determine thhe process of construction. That makes the computer an ideal instrument to producing the virtual.

Week One

Precedent Analysis

These images showing the structure lines, the south elevation and the rendered view of the pavilion. The surface of the pavilion are developed from the structure lines. These images showing the modelling progress of the pavilion.

The images provided are not enough to modelling an accurate pavilion, but the structure is clearly shown by the session lines. By drawing the session lines in Rhino, the structure of the pavilion can be constructed. After that, the surface can be easily constructed by applying the loft command. The last process is makking the hollows on the ceiling, it can be made by trim command.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discuss how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

The burnham pavilion is placed in Chicago in 2009. It was designed as a place for people to relax. The pavilion act as a isolating place in a city. Therefore, the design of the pavilion is simple, it dose not have too much decoration, it only got a siginificant design on the ceilling. People would feel relax when staying in the pavilion. The action and emotion of people would be affected by the environment. The design of a place can determine the action and emotion of people. So, the simple design of the burnham pavilion create a comfortable environment for people to relax and to escape from their busy life.

Zaha Hadid - Burnham pavilion 2009 The modelling process is not easy, the sturcture is quite complicate. Althrough each session lines are shown in the provided images, it is not easy to make the shape of the pavilion. In the isometric view, i tried to show the hollow ceiling. as i think it is the significant part in the pavilion. By making the circulation and threshold diagrams, i realised that the construction and threshold design of a space can affect the circulation. For example, the location of entrance will determine the way people chose to pass through. In the above pavilion, the entrance are located in the north and south side of the pavilion. It create a shortest path in the pavilion, but people are attracted by the hollow celling, so the didn’t pass through the shortest path. It shows that the design also affect the circulation path. The precedent study let us learn a lot about the diagram and how the design of threshold related to the circulation.

Week Two

Diagrams

Circulation diagrams The human figures in the first diagram shows the primary circulation space and the denser area in the pavilion. People tends to concentrated in the centre to stare at the hollow celling. The second diagram shows the shortest path that can pass through the pavilion and the major circulation path. Although people can pass through thhe pavilion via the shortest path, they tends to walk along the major circulation path to have a look of the celling design.

Threshold diadram The diagram shows the entrances of the pavilion. This is the view of the pavilion cut in half, it is mach more easy to observe the entrance of the pavilion thhrough this view.
