Ireland the Design Island Programme overview

Design creates a better world. It can enhance our lives, our environment and our society. It shapes everything we see, use and experience and can change how we live, work and play. It can bring communities together and influence how we interact with each other. Talented designers throughout Ireland observe and respond to the world around us, identifying needs or opportunities for improvement and creating unique, innovative solutions. Irish Design 2015 (ID2015) is a programme exploring, promoting and celebrating Irish design and designers through events and activities on the island of Ireland and in international capitals of design and commerce. ID2015 aims to foster dialogue and collaboration. By encouraging investment in design as a key component of competitiveness and innovation, the medium-term objective of this initiative is to sustain and grow employment opportunities and sales and export potential for the Irish design sector into the future. As part of ID2015, Dublin has been named World Design Hub by the International Association of Designers, a designation which seeks to stimulate innovation and cultural development, as well as economic growth. Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, is Patron of Irish Design 2015 and the initiative has been included in the Irish Government’s Action Plan for Jobs. ID2015 is being convened by the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI), in collaboration with partner organisations, on behalf of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Enterprise Ireland.

Design creates better lives‌

Irish Design 2015 offers a unique opportunity for Irish designers to highlight the significant role and impact that design has in every facet of life. This Irish initiative with a global reach has the potential to act as a catalyst for significant and transformational change for our country’s future. High-profile events and activities both at home and abroad will position Ireland at the heart of a design-focused, forwardthinking, creative international economy. Building on Ireland’s well-recognised strengths and international reputation for design and creativity in fields such as architecture, animation and medical device design, the ID2015 programme is being devised in order to encourage more people, businesses and organisations to invest in design and design thinking, and to promote Ireland’s talents and reputation internationally as part of our enterprise and innovation culture. ID2015 aims to enjoin all parts of the Irish design economy in a concerted effort to sustain and create employment opportunities for Irish design and related sectors. Reflecting the opportunities which the sector represents for growth and further employment, ID2015 is included in the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs. Participation in key events in international design capitals will maximise the impact of international partnerships and highlight the quality of Irish design to international audiences. ID2015 seeks to actively engage communities to explore how design can help people live in a more sustainable way, and foster new employment opportunities by embedding design into business and daily life.
