The Australian Irish pub landscape has changed in recent years. Gone are the days when every second new pub was called something like Barney McShamrock’s with a road-sign telling us how far we were from Salthill and little else that could be described as authentically Irish. As in Ireland, we have seen the emergence of smaller Irish bars, offering, perhaps, a more sophisticated experience. There are approximately 150 Irish pubs across Australia. We have chosen 50 which, we hope, represent the diversity of what is on offer. From Darwin to Perth to St Kilda to County Bondi, the Irish pub remains a comforting fixture to the discerning expat drinker, a reminder of ‘home’ – if one is required – a place to maintain old friendships and make new ones, to have a nice pint of Guinness and enjoy the craic. The pub is nestled in the southern vales only a 45-minute drive from Adelaide. This area is the gateway to the well-known McLaren Vale wine district and the Fleurieu Peninsula. Mick O’Shea’s has much to offer with a full a-la-carte restaurant, lounge bar, beer garden, outdoor entertaining area, gaming room and accommodation, making it an ideal venue for any occasion large or small.
On March 17, 1955, at the second annual St Patrick’s Day Dinner held at the old Argent Hotel a group of Irishmen discussed the possibility of establishing an Irish club in Mount Isa, Queensland. A few days later a meeting was held and the groundwork for the Mount Isa Irish club was laid. The first Irish club – a very humble galvanized weatherboard building – was built and ready for opening for St. Patrick’s Day 1956. Since then, the Irish club has become an integral part of the Mount Isa scene and indeed has developed into one of its icons.
