Make every step count this September by walking the Camino de Santiago in aid of The Irish Hospice Foundation
AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY Why Walk the Camino? Walking the Camino can be incredibly rewarding and fun while also providing great exercise. It is an amazing journey full of culture, history and stunning landscapes. By joining the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) Camino you will not only be embarking on a personal challenge but you will also be supporting people nationwide who are facing death, dying and bereavement by helping to raise funds for the work and services of the IHF.
How fit should I be? The Camino is not supposed to be a boot camp but rather an enjoyable experience! You do not need to be in “world-class” shape but we recommend you prepare yourself to be able to walk distances of approximately 20 km per day. It is important to remember that nobody is expected to complete a day’s walking in one go. Each day will be split into two carefully selected breaks to allow participants to relax, get a drink or catch up with the rest of the group. We will also provide you with a training plan on registration and will be hosting a training walk for all participants in July.
Our Route - The Finisterre Way The Finisterre Camino is the only Camino de Santiago route that starts in the city of Santiago de Compostela. The goal of this journey is the legendary spot known as Cape Finisterre, once believed to be the world’s westernmost point and the place where our souls ascended to Heaven. What makes this route particularly impressive is the prominent role played by the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful Galician coastline. This Finisterre Camino itinerary continues along the rugged coast to the fishing village of Muxía and the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Barca, a traditional pilgrimage destination in a spectacular location.
Our Guides We work alongside an experienced guide company, CaminoByTheWay. Two guides will accompany us on the walk and they have many years' experience of guiding walking groups along the Camino. They have expertly planned this route for us including our accommodation and meals. They are happy to have a chat with participants and answer any questions you might have about the route, training or equipment. Our guides Juan Rodriguez and Donal O'Sulivan
Here's what some of our supporters have to say about taking part in the IHF Camino Challenge 2017 + 2018 "If you are thinking of doing the Camino I would recommend doing it with the IHF. You are raising funds for a good cause and during the walk you will meet lovely people. It is very well organised week and it’s a great achievement to reach the end with a great group of people."
“This was the most amazing experience, going alone was a bit daunting, but I came away with 55 new friends and a life time of amazing memories.” “It was wonderful. Met inspiring people and I got more from the trip than I expected whilst making it a very worthwhile fundraising experience.”
"Extremely rewarding trip. Extremely well organised. Just about perfection by CaminoByTheWay and the IHF team. Excellent professionalism"
"Returning in 2018 for the second time I was unsure if the experience would live up to my expectations... Well it certainly did and surpassed them, again more strangers went home as friends and superb memories to treasure forever. While the week was full of a range of emotions, I came away with a real sense of pride and achievement and the best part is that while we take each step we are raising funds to help so many people/families facing their final days."

Caring for Children Since 2010, we have invested €2.3 million in providing five Children’s Outreach Nurses around Ireland, a Consultant Paediatrician with a special interest in palliative care, and a children’s oncology liaison nurse. We are now committed to further supporting these services by funding a second consultant, national coordination and other supports.
In 2017 over 2,000 nights of care was provided to 600 families at a cost of €650,000. Voluntary funds like those raised through the Camino challenge are vital in making this care a reality. The Children's outreach nurses
Transforming Hospital Spaces 48 hospitals are already involved in our Design & Dignity programme which transforms hospital spaces making them a more comfortable and dignified place in which to die and grieve.
