CYCLE

2019

E G N E L L CHA

Get on your bike and join us as we pedal across the Costa Verde, a stunning coastline region of Spain. You will be part of our biggest annual fundraising event and will explore the Spanish northern maritime coast with its lush green coastal strip and breath-taking and rugged landscape -all with expert guidance and support. Our cycle route starts in Santallina del Mar and takes in beautiful coastal towns, beaches and the dramatic scenery of the Picos de Europe. Our final destination is the historical and cultural city of Santiago de Compostela. Cyclists of all levels welcome We welcome cyclists of all levels as we offer two routes on many days. Advanced cyclists can tackle some extra climbs including the challenging Lagos de Covadonga, whilst the rest of our group continue with the standard route.

The Route in Summary Departing from Dublin on Sunday 23rd June, we travel to our hotel in Santillana del Mar, a picturesque town and voted as one of the most beautiful places to visit in all of Spain by the Spanish themselves! The next morning we will begin the first of five days cycling. We will leave Santillana and enjoy the verdant countryside and follow

the beautiful coastline. Then the route takes us inland where the Picos de Europe Mountians will be our backdrop as we reach Cangas de Onis. Over the following days we return to the coastline to take in Gijon and Navia before reaching the walled city of Lugo and our final destination, the cathedral city of Santiago de Compostela. On day seven we return to Dublin from Santiago where the airport is just a short journey from our final hotel.

The Challenge You will be cycling over 550km (excluding optional climbs and routes) over five days, whilst raising vital funds for The Irish Hospice Foundation. 2

We enlist the help of the fantastic team at Cycling Safaris to plan our route and hotels, guide our groups, transport luggage and look after our cyclists for the duration of the trip. The Irish Hospice Foundation has worked with Cycling Safaris on every cycle challenge. We couldn’t be in better hands as we celebrate our tenth year of cycling events. Kingspan has been the exclusive sponsor of all our cycle challenges. We are very grateful for their amazing support and friendship over ten years from 2009 – 2019.

COSTA VERDE

Y R A R E N I IT

area is acclaimed for This is a wonderful cycle through Northern Spain. This Picos de Europa, their the remarkable scenery: the snow-capped peaks of the s in some of Europe’s verdant foothills and the magnificent coastline that take most beautiful beaches.

DAY 1 – SUNDAY

DAY 4 – WEDNESDAY:

Arrival in Santander

Gijon to Navia (124km/1600m)

Arrival by direct Ryanair Flight Dublin to Santander (afternoon departure). From here we have a short bus transfer to Santillana del Mar. This translates into “the Holy Flat town by the Sea” – it is known as the town of 3 lies, as it is neither Holy or in a flat region and is a few kilometres from the sea! However, it is one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, perfectly preserved and a wonderful place to orientate before beginning the cycle.

Today loosely follows the coast taking in towns like Avilles with its historic core and innovative Oscar Niemeyer arts centre. The town of Navia is situated on an estuary which is surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains, beaches, valleys, rivers and forests. The town has excellent examples of medieval architecture from its history and is today a lively port and a popular resting point for Camino pilgrims.

DAY 2 – MONDAY:

DAY 5 – THURSDAY:

Santillana to Cangas de Onis (110kms/1350m)

Navia to Lugo (125kms / 1450m)

The cycle commences by heading for the coastline where the road rolls and emerges at seaside towns and beaches. San Vicente de la Barquera offers wonderful sandy beaches, a medieval castle and the backdrop of the dramatic Picos de Europa Mountains. From there the coast is left behind and views of these dramatic mountains take over. Cangas de Onis was once the capital of the kingdom of Asturias and sits in a deep valley between two rivers in the heart of the Picos. The town is steeped in antiquity; its most iconic feature being Roman Bridge which was declared to be a Historic Artistic Site in 1931. The bridge contains five arches, three of which are pointed and contain a reproduction of the Victoria Cross.

Once again we head inland and discover the Celtic villages (known locally as Castros) and old monasteries that line the Eo river. The route gently climbs, initially following the river. Again the countryside is reminiscent of Ireland being lush and green. Further into the day we come to the UNESCO listed Roman Walls of Lugo, erected in the 3rd century and studded with 85 towers which make a wonderful 2.2km loop around the old town.

DAY 6 – FRIDAY:

Option: Lagos de Cavodonga. This is one of the most featured climbs in the Vuelta and a beautiful place with many stunning view points to take in.

Lugo to Santiago (110km/1340m) The last day continues on country roads to the Embalse de Portodemouros. This reservoir provides a beautiful backdrop to the surrounding hills.

DAY 3 – TUESDAY: Cangas to Gijon (90km/1600m)

As the cycle nears the finish it will cross the Camino route and head into the city via the famous hill of the Monumento do Monte do Gozo. It is a short run into this unique city imbued with the aura of a millennium’s worth of journeys. Centuries past live on its arcaded streets and magnificent stone architecture, of which the famous cathedral is the jewel in the crown. Our cycling might be over, but the adventure certainly is not; now it’s time to relax and explore this magnificent spiritual and cultural city.

The day begins traversing a remote and scenic region. Here the landscape is similar to Wicklow with green hills and content cows in meadows. The pretty town of Villaviciosa on the Estuary signals a return to the coastline. Gijon, situated on the country’s north coast, has emerged from its industrial past to become a charming city with pedestrianised streets, parks, seafront walks and cultural attractions. There are also several beaches, rolling green scenery, rugged clifftops, a rich maritime heritage and an old fisherman’s quarter at Cimadevilla.

DAY 7 - SATURDAY:

Option: Mirador del Fitu

Departure

Here we take on the winding roads to reach one of the most spectacular view points of Spain.

We take a short transfer to Santiago Airport and take the Aer Lingus flight to Dublin (afternoon departure).

Cycle for Care and Bereavement Support Pedal Power

– The difference you can make

Every day in Ireland, 80 people die and 800 of us are newly bereaved. We are the only national charity dedicated to dying, death and bereavement. By taking on our 2019 Cycle Challenge you can help us continue to provide vital funding for our Nurses for Night Care service. This free national service for people with illnesses other than cancer allows more people to spend their final days at home in their own bed, with their families by their side. In 2017 over 2,020 nights of care were provided to 630 families across Ireland at a cost of €650,000. Demand for Nurses for Night Care has doubled over the past five years and continues to grow. About €660,000 is needed to fund the service in 2019. Each day spent in the saddle will mean at least one night of comfort and nursing care for adults, children and families where and when it is needed. The minimum fundraising amount raised by each cyclist equates to six nights of care. One week really does a make a difference to those at such a vulnerable time of life. Voluntary funds like those raised through our Cycle Challenge are vital in making this care a reality for more people at end of life.

A lot more needs to be done to make Ireland a better place for those facing, death and bereavement. We believe everyone deserves a good death and the proper support during bereavement. Over the next ten years, 300,000 people will die and most of us will journey with and possibly care for someone who is dying. Three million of us will also be bereaved during that time. By raising funds for us, you will support our work as we: • Train frontline staff to better help those suffering in their grief • Create private hospital spaces for those reeling from the shock of a loved one’s death • Assist families struggling with funeral costs • Help children cope with the complex pain of their grief and care for bereaved people through guidance and support
