The Hudson River Studio This design studio will look at the latent urban and ecological potential of the post post-industrial New York harbor with a focus on reimagining the Hudson River edge as a place of interaction, learning, economic generation, and ecological exchange. NYC’s waterfront has taken multiple forms throughout history. Our goal is to transform the conceptions of urban waterfront to include an emphasis on soft infrastructure, robust marine habitat, and new forms of programming and energy generation relative to 21st century Manhattan urbanism. An emphasis will be placed on developing a science-driven design methodology that spans many scales, from macro-level hydrological studies at the scale of western Manhattan to small material prototypes if casting marine concrete. The studio will culminate in the development of an architectural scale intervention at one of four specific sites along the lower Hudson River.

The Hudson River is the birthplace of American conceptions of infrastructure and nature. From the early Hudson River School of Painters, to the invention of the steam boat, to the many factories that located and then moved from the River Banks. The waterfront -developed as part of a legacy of industrialization and, maritime commerce - is typically the city’s most contested zone. Once a vulnerable edge in need of fortification, then a conduit for trade and shipping, this “-front” today is characterized in global cites by a matrix of complex regulatory restraints heightened by the realities of global climate change, shifting tides, and demands for profitable development and local access. Rather than imposing a new uniform regime onto the waterfront of a post-industrial landscape exclusively for living and leisure we might ask – what can we learn from the waterfront relative to the economies and ecologies of the future? What are the new relationships of habitat, waste, energy, new communal-residence typologies, marine biodiversity, and pre-industrial live-work modes that will generate a truly productive zone? We will speculate as to how to reorganize the Hudson River as a harbinger of the future of cities and landscapes, and reconstruct the relationship between politics, biology, architecture and urban nature. At a time in which threats to global biodiversity, energy resources, and rising water levels force the radical reconsideration of concepts of production and urbanism, we will speculate as to how future buildings and landscapes can be planted and seeded over time, and how can a new set of urbanistic practices, grounded in inherently changing river flower and processes, emerge. Our design strategies will incorporate risk and change and forge new ecologies and community structures.

Ganservoort Peninsula
FERRY TERMINAL + TIDAL CLASSROOM Despite heavy investments in lower Manhattan, many sites sit underutilized and have not developed to their full potential to integrate history and the future of the Battery, land and water, and tourist and resident. ESTUARIUM The Hudson River is really a complex estuarine system that mixes fresh and salt water. The Hudson River Park Trust, plans to build an Estuarium, or a museum about the Hudson River itself, on Pier 26, with a height limit of two stories. MIXED USE PIER Pier 40, which houses the offices of the Hudson River Park Trust, has a 14 acre footprint over water. Hudson River Park was established on a self-sustaining model, and the pier needs to be an economic generator for the trust.
PERFORMANCE PARK Gansevoort Peninsula was built on a marine platform and has a soft rip-rap edge. Most of the peninsula will be converted to open park space, with a small carve out for a Marine Transfer Station. Pier 54, located to the immediate north of Gansevoort Peninsula, was used until recently as a concert venue. WASTE GARDEN Adjacent to the 125th street water treatment plant, which is covered with parklike substance, sits a Department if Sanitation Shed that is being phased out of use. This site presents opportunities to integrate public access vertically, to explore techniques of mollusk framing and bio filtration, and bring water access to an underserved community.

Cut and Float The potential of this site is enormous. The focus of the proposal is on reimaging this part of Hudson River edge as a renovated 21st century eco-urban river bank performance park. Special attention will be on the hydrology and eco-aspect. “Cut and Float� will be used as an experimental form of architectural scheme on this Hudson River studio. Flexible floating performance spaces will be created to capture the essence of New York City, different versions of landscape and changing background with time and floating is expected. And floating structures such as wetlands will serve to clean water and protect soft shoreline.

This site I choose for Performance Park on Hudson River Waterfront is Pier 54+neighboring Gansevoort Peninsula, and the water area between them. This site is located near downtown meat packing district, a former industrial neighborhood of New York City, in recent year, developing into a destination for vanguard architecture, design, fashion, restaurants and the High Line urban park. And soon the High line Headquarter and new Whitney Museum will be located just across the West Street of this site. The booming of eastern district brings high inspiration to the water front planning. To expand the activities on its southern Hudson River Park, a soft connection space will be designed. Multiple layers water proving ground will be exploited, protected and open to public with hope to blur the boundaries between land and sea, extending the city into water. Recreational eco-spaces will be created between Pier and Peninsula. A sky bridge will be put forward to connect High Line and the new Whitney Museum, aiming for easy accessibility and making effort to link city energy and art ambiance with the waterfront performance park.

Steel arch of Pier 54, the remains of a once-grand building built for ocean liner passengers, was the first scene we encountered when bicycling along the greenway of the site. Although concerts, dances, movies and events have been held in Pier 54, due to safety concern, all the activities have been moved away this year. A walking and biking path can be used starting 1996 in this area, but notorious for the uncomfortable narrowness and the danger of adjacent West Street Traffic. After a long occupation by the New York City Sanitation Department, the Gansevoort Peninsula is expected to give back to the public for park use.

Viewing the park as a “flexible field� was the key to in creating a design that could behave in a way that would parallel its ultimate use. Each distinct zone houses varying program, views, and ecologic characteristics. The park incorporated into all three areas, a paver of variable density and orientation and to foster general movement throughout the site without acting as a restrictive barrier to specific activities. In this break water cove, contemporary arts and media display can be performed in architectural spaces designed to be open and friendly; fluid and floating; flexible and expendable.

In this eco-urban still water plaza, the soft-edge of the floating wetland restores a visual marker of the shifting environment and promotes ecological growth at the site. Overview It is projected for the beginning of the XXI century that over 50% of the world population will be living in urban centers. But what is the actual purpose of a high density City at the beginning of the XXI Century? With the advent of new technologies the storage, transmission and management of information has become quasi spaceless. So, with a brutal contraction of time and space, not to say a complete disappearance of the notion of distance for data transmission in the Information Age we have arrived again to the notion of Delocalization. So why are we paying so much rent to live in the center of cities like Paris, New York, Tokyo, Mumbai or Kyoto?

If the future of the city is the “knowledge city” want form and shape does such a city takes? Is it a human oriented Network, or an information oriented network? It brings us back to the initial question, regarding the relationship between the Virtual and the Physical in architecture. On the other hand we all accept this condition, as our current experience of the city is a condition of “interface” where the build environment allows us to understand better abstract “information” This project will look at the open space in the city and campus. How city and campus use the open space together? How to find an articulation between city and campus. This is a very first image of knowledge city project: “active porosity”

Yellow _ Open Space A study of using the open (yellow) space to interfere and change the nearby city and campus programs. It can be a event generator. As much through their programs as through their spatial potential, they accelerate a cultural or social transformation that is already in progress. These diverse types and spatial experiences will improve the quality of urban life. In this project if we increase the density and quantity, it can trigger more activities and events. Form spaces but not define space, ambiguous space that defines by surrounding - active porosity.

Building Porosity The design also consolidates and reorganizes existing open space programs to enhance their function. A new pedestrian network will be introduced to divide space into smaller intimate-sized ones, adding more intersections to encourage active social interaction. This will help reduce the perceived size of the private space and connect open space, infusing the site with more life and activity. These new centers of activity will help create a more cohesive University form and circulation network, thereby forging a clearer link between NYU and the neighborhood. On the other hand it is a big stage to visualize the activities that provide knowledge exchange between city and campus.

Overview Unique in the nature, magnitude, complexity, profundity, and diversity built into its infinite intensities and cultural varieties, Rio de Janeiro is both truly amazing and impossible to suitably describe. It has been widely broadcast that significant transformation to its deep fabric is inevitable especially with the World Cup of Soccer coming to Brazil in 2014, and the Summer Olympic Games to be hosted by Rio in 2016. That, coupled with Brazil’s upward trend towards positive economic development and expanded geopolitical influence, Rio has never been better poised to leverage its distinctive potential against its intrinsic urgencies than it is at this moment. Though how Rio’s myriad challenges, constraints, conflicts, forces, ambitions and interests ultimately interweave over time is yet to be determined, the one sure thing is that the complexity in play is uniquely perplexing at almost every level. This studio’s pursuits will incisively tap into a host of questions that emerge from the uniquely exciting momentum at hand. What new spatial and urban typologies may emerge from this developmental fervor? Or, how might we participate in imagining potential futures for Rio beyond 2016? To what degree might ideas developed from the outside sincerely mix and expand upon exchange on the inside? What can we as a studio bring to the table to spark and perpetuate such exchange? Specifically geared to inject high levels of architectural imagination and experimentation into the ongoing and varied discourses in Rio de Janeiro regarding its spatial potentials at impactful scales, this studio will navigate a multitude of operational modes in an effort to cultivate questions which would otherwise not be raised, and develop architectural evidence that constructively points to spatial futures not yet imagined for Rio.

Avenida Brasil Far from the stunning views of Rio’s beaches of the so called South Zone area, lies a thriving urban tapestry of high density neighborhoods, poorly planned and lacking the quality of open spaces, parks and trees of its counterpart. Most of these neighborhoods are connected by Rio’s largest and most important thoroughfare: Avenida Brasil. Slicing through 27 neighborhoods in the city, Avenida Brasil is to this day the busiest and most important route for the daily commute of people to and from Rio’s downtown and though about 1/3 of its 36 mile length will be modified to incorporate a planned BRT transportation system, the remainder of this historic avenue will be left mostly untouched, at least until the soon approaching 2016 deadline of the Olympic Games. Our mission, then, will be to think of Avenida Brasil’s potential as an urban spine to deliver more than just a more efficient means of travel, but to seek, generate and investigate the myriad possibilities to boost the quality of life of those who depend on Avenida Brasil, and spark new spatial modes of activation by strategically flexing the Avenida and its residual spaces into new conceptions of the city.

Rio Remix: Spatial Sampling Rio has been blessed not only by its stunning topography but also by an array of architectural projects (especially during its modernist phase) and by the incredible bottom-up spatial intelligence inherent in its favelas. Unique and immensely diverse specific spatial signatures occur throughout Rio’s urban fabric, to an extent that surpasses most cities on Earth. This exciting feature of the city will fuel the synthesis, sampling, deployment and testing of pre-biased spatial strategies through the studio work, re-injecting such signatures into Avenida Brasil, and Rio will serve as the global context (the antidote against the super generic) through which new local identities will be broadcast. This new spatial mix will be cultivated from the inside and woven on the outside, extending as far as the remotest spot on Avenida Brasil. A general thrust related to boosting new forms of mobility and cultural agitation defines the baseline from which our semisystematic exchange-based studio operations will launch.

Spatial Observation The city of Rio itself will be considered a laboratory from and upon which to sample and synthesize specific spatial qualities, providing an array of strategies to be tested and remixed along, within, above and below the massive spine that is Avenida Brasil. RIO REMIX will focus on so-called blind spots along the avenue as a way to initiate urban-spatial synergies at large scales of potential impact.

Tarmac + City This project is looking at the flexible and dynamic open spaces in Rio, and try to remain and rescale them along the avenue, in order to project a new type of spatial condition for the future Rio. The mixer of City Tarmac will transfer the avenue into dynamic space to make people activity to merge with the transportation. Tarmac is the space for airplane runway all the way to the terminal in the airport. It content a lot of signal and direction for the movement and also provide the flexibility to the activity on top it. For this proposal the main thing is what if we mix the tarmac system and the city. What will happened? The site we have is along the new Rio BRT line. Combining this new movement with tarmac concept, when it embedded in this city in order to trigger urban activity. Start with looking at the transition for movement and trying to find the potential spot in the site. Creating a tarmac bridge to show some possibilities of the future city in Rio. The first code we name it GROWTH: this creates a net structure, generated from a cloud of strategically positioned points, by aggregating three inputs: generations, branches and length, in order to achieve the desired web growth.
The second code, RELAX: Shrinks the spider web. The formation of a net will distinguish fixed and flexible points that will allow points to move and identify the relationship with the neighboring point that gradually increase and decrease tension as well as density of the web geometry reacting through the different generations of code.

Statement We are emphasizing subway, as it is part of the urban context it should interact with the people. The purpose of our project is to deliver the information regrading the train is delivered to those above the ground before they enter the metro station.
Approaching Convergence The architect—as mediator between immaterial and material, human and technology—has always operated across a multitude of domains at once, and with an array of strategies at hand. The digital age has only accelerated the multiplicity; each novel tool introduced to the architect’s toolbox has struck a new vector of architectural narration, and with it opened further possibilities of conveyance of concept and method. With the advent of the performance-based paradigm, however, a reliance upon the perceived purity of data-driven results has emerged, clouding the once-explicit role of the designer in process. Parametric design is commonly perceived to be the objective end result of a software’s processing of predetermined databases through complex algorithms, compelling experiments to act within their computational capabilities. Often overlooked, however, are the incapability of embedded presuppositions in software and subjective determinations of fitness objectives that ultimately drive the construction and determination of the system. Architects have indeed acknowledged these challenges as limitations of performative design, and along the way ambitions have shifted to the study of generative and non-linear potentials. As a result, exploiting control over the efficiency, fluidity and substantive analyses of the parametric system in order to close the gap in the exchange of information—and thus championing a re-insertion of the designer into process—has remained largely unexplored.

The term convergence in mathematics refers to the idea that certain functions and algorithmic relationships approach a limit when arriving at certain conditions. In evolutionary computing, the term refers to the tendency of a tested population to reach stabilization over time. This course, however, propose that a convergence of interpretational toolsets holds the potential to unlock an even deeper exploration of the designer’s agenda. At this conflux of methodologies, where the distance between generation and evaluation substantively compresses, dexterity across multiple digital platforms amplifies the designer’s ability to both explore options across an expanding design-space and achieve depth and speed of analysis. The agile designer must traverse a broad spectrum of generation, testing, and evaluation methodologies in orchestrating the complex collaborations of the process of design. Imagine if we could reach our machines to think the same!

Times and Opening As Grasshopper is currently a software in beta form, a primary intent of this course is to make a significant contribution to the current efforts of an ever-growing community of users, through the creation and development of an online catalogue and forum devoted specifically to the topic of automated workflow strategies. Fueled by several modes of internal collaboration, we will work systematically to develop a diverse library of customized tools in and ultimately for an open-source environment. The schedule will incorporate laboratory sessions specific to this collaborative goal. Tools and components collaboratively developed in Grasshopper will merge to generate complex super-operations, comprising a collective virtual workshop. Students will construct mechanisms within Grasshopper to gain real-time access to operations and plug-in functionalistic of Rhino beyond the standard Grasshopper toolset.

Commercial centers in the Philippines are “centers” for social activity -an important infrastructure for gathering, leisure and business. Located at the highest point of Busay, Cebu, this town center will become a place where public space and commercial establishments meet. The Skylark Town center is designed as a “street” that negotiates the steep slopes of the site, allowing people to promenade and enjoy the amazing views the site has to offer. Restaurants, Retail, Spa and Community program “plug” into the spiral street. Restaurants all have indoor and outdoor dining facilities -allowing social activities to spill into communal areas, creating an active landscape.
