EXISTING SITE CONDITION During the period of 1950 to 1980, China had a residence-offering system as a national welfare, which produced a huge number of urban housings in the similar construction methods. These residential buildings have been currently occupied more than 60% of population of major cities in China. However, with the rapid development of the urbanization, most of these housing can hardly meet the residents’ social and spatial demands now.

THESIS STATEMENT The China’s 1980’s mass-produced standard urban residential fabrics has become inadequate due to the drastic changes in the Chinese social structure and fast urbanization. The thesis is aimed to reform the existing residential neighborhood in response to the social transformation, including the population composition, the use of public space, infrastructures, and the need of interaction among all groups of citizens. By taking the upcoming aging society as the trigger, this thesis proposes a new architectural process at the urban scale that allows for global changes, as well as being adaptable to local customization so that the monotonous urban fabrics can be more socially sustainable.

THREE PHASING STRATEGY Phase 1: Reforming Infrastructure Performative Core

Urban Lounge from the city to the residential community

Elevated Corridor extending from urban lounge

Phase 2: Densifying through Modulation

Modular Unit growing from existing structure

Phase 3: Self-developing & Customizing

New identity of the neighborhood determined by local residents

06

PHASE 1 RE-FORMING INFRASTRUCTURE As the urban lounge is mainly supported by the cores and connected though layers of small slabs, this light structure will not interfere the existing conditions of residential neighborhood, but still lay the foundation for the future transformation of the site. By setting up multi-performative cores, different functions will be loaded along with the cores. Between multi-cores, the space is connecting through layers of slabs that allocating different local activities to serve both the city and the residential neighborhood.

PHASE 2 DENSIFYING THROUGH MODULATION

After having a direct vertical access to the higher levels and the extending public corridors, it lay the foundation for the future growth of small compact unit for coming population. The compact modular unit will basically follow the structure of the existing ones and limit the large changes or deterioration of the existing structure. Interwoven Circulation

PHASE 3 SELF-DEVELOPING & CUSTOMIZING

By transforming the nearly pure residential neighborhood into mixed-use and socially interactive urban forms, the previous reforming processes creates a starting point that allows self-developing and customizing in the face of future changes. After adding the urban lounge and units, it provides the opportunity for the future internal transformation or customizing of the 1980’s residential neighborhood. So the function of the existing building will gradually be transforming to fit the needs of the local residents. And the site will have the nature of self-growth and customization, it will not present like a monotonous generic condition any more but has its own identity which is determined by the local residents themselves.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH Property Value vs Commuting Time Study in Hong Kong

Property Value vs Distance Most Area: The property value of HKSAR has been influenced by the location and distance of the areas towards central area. Southern Area: Property value of this area is mainly dependent on the view of the sea and the coastline. Sai Kung: The high property value of this district is highly influenced by the fishing industry.

13

Theoretical Travel Time Study Travelling pattern study based on walking velocity on different ground situation: flat, topographical and with linkages. With the system of subway and tram taking part in, the commuting time will be highly affected. In short distance, taking tram is more efficient than using subways. In long distance, taking subway is more preferred.

CONTEX T RESEARCH MONUMENTAL ARCHITECTURE SPATIAL STUDY IN SWITZERL AND In the early 16th century, Martin Luther and the Reformation brought a period of radical change to church design. According to the ideals of the Protestant reformation, the spoken word, the sermon, should be central act in the church service. This implied that the pulpit became the focal point of the church interior and that churches should be designed to allow all to hear and see the minister.

CONTEX T & FORM STUDY Located on the edge of a forest at the foot of a mountain, this project mainly emphasized the subtle connection between the mountain and the city. The curving form of the building is generated from the contours of the mountain, and then the massing is stretched down over the mountain. With three wings, this project divides the site into three different types of outdoor space: intimate open courtyard, city-related area and natural mountain circumstance.

ATMOSPHERE With two atrium located at the central areas, library, gallery and other space are lightened with natural sunlight from both atrium and double-height windows. The function of the project is cultural center, therefore, most interior space is built up with pure and plain materials so that they will not influence activities inside.

Cut the fabric precisely and saw the pieces together nicely, to achieve a surface large enough for the metal structure.

Assemble the steel tube structure. Use 3d-printed joints to control the desired angles on the corners.

03

04

Fix screw hooks to the structure as anchor points. Stretch the fabric and tie it to the screw hooks.

Attach thestructure to a concrete block on the ground to prevent it from tilting caused by the big cantilever.

The project is located in the Jida District, one of the many core districts in the city. Currently the Jida District comprises financial, commercial, tourist, and leisure and high-end residential developments, forming part of the city centre of Zhuhai. It is mainly focused on developing a multi-functional open space on the basis of site analysis on various perspectives. My work includes drawing plans of hotel and shopping mall, 3D modelling at preliminary stage and assistance in MLP planning.

The project is located right next to the famous scenic spot, West Lake, in the city of Hangzhou. The main concept of the design is to not only integrate the outdoor space: the terraces and the spacious rooftop of the shopping center with the beautiful scenery of the lake, but also to set up the landmark image by its own characteristic. Introducing the tensile membrane systeim is the intial but critial step to the project, which increase the attraction for the center and has its functional advantages.

DESIGN STRATEGIES

01

Adding the major attraction toward the general site condition.

02

Transforming the usual horizontal circulation into the address of vertical visual connection through atriums and terraces.

03

Creating a more complex and integrated circulation on the rooftop through differenct outdoor programs.
