Fall good time to aerate lawn

(StatePoint) — Fall is a great time to aerate the lawn. Whether you do it yourself or hire a lawn care professional to do it for you, aeration at least once per year provides a number of benefits to your lawn, say experts. The main benefit is to relieve compaction and increase pore space, which promotes gas exchange and microbial activity in the soil and creates a better, more supportive environment for lawn health and vitality. Aeration also promotes better

soil drainage, which helps keep disease at bay and allows more water to percolate into the soil from rain or irrigation, meaning less runoff and more water getting where it needs to go. “Ideal aeration timing depends on turf type and geography,” said Lloyd Von Scheliha of Exmark Manufacturing, a manufacturer of turf care equipment. “But annual aeration provides valuable agronomic benefits to virtually any turfgrass.” With that in mind, here are

some tips from the experts at Exmark to get the most benefits from aeration:

Timing

Ideally, aeration should take place during times of active growth to help with recovery. Avoid aeration during times of heat stress or times preceding dormancy. It’s typically best to aerate cool season grasses in the spring or fall, while with warm season grasses, it’s best to aerate in late spring or early fall.

Proper equipment

Use gear that meets the needs of your lawn. For example, Exmark offers a 30-inch StandOn aerator that makes quick work of even large properties with the ability to easily maneuver around landscape features.

Follow-up

After aeration, it’s a good idea to water the lawn, as well as a good time to apply fertilizer or

overseed if needed. Be careful not to apply a pre-emergent if you plan to overseed, however, as it will prevent the new seed from

growing. Don’t let this important, but often overlooked lawn care task escape your attention this

season. At the ideal time for your lawn, either take it upon yourself or hire a professional to give your grass a better chance at thriving.

Looking toward a ‘green’ fall (BPT) — Fall signals the end of summer and the beginning of vibrantly colored leaves on the ground, pumpkin patches and refreshingly cooler temperatures. Early fall is also the perfect time of year to complete home improvement projects - the weather is mild, and you can clear your home of clutter before the chill of winter and beginning of the busy holiday season. While organizing your home during the fall season, it’s also a good time to get rid of old, obsolete electronics and appliances. Typically, a lot of people throw out items that can be recycled when cleaning or doing repairs around the house. This is mostly due to not knowing what, how or where to recycle. Research shows that recycling behavior is based on awareness, accessibility and convenience. Approximately one-third (34 percent) of U.S. respondents suffer from “green guilt,” or the feeling that they could and should be doing more to help preserve the environment, according to a

recent national survey commissioned by Call2Recycle, Inc. that analyzed consumer recycling behaviors. The good news is that consumers are putting green guilt to good use with four out of five (81 percent) saying they are likely to recycle batteries, cell phones and other small electronics, rather than throwing these items in the trash. Consumers want to do the right thing, but many just don’t know how. Fall is a good time to learn how to improve your home by recycling items that often end up in a landfill.

What to recycle

Do you ever ask yourself, “How do I get rid of this?” Or, “Should this be recycled or thrown in the trash?” Several common household items use rechargeable batteries, including cell phones, laptops, power tools, digital cameras, two-way radios, MP3 players and iPods, tablets and more. As you clear out the attic, garage and storage closets, check for items that use

rechargeable batteries.

Why recycle

Many people are unaware that batteries can contain metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel, which could contaminate the environment when improperly disposed. The batteries from these old devices should be recycled so that they do not end up in landfills. This is the goal of the nonprofit Call2Recycle — North America’s first and largest consumer battery stewardship organization. The organization collects and recycles batteries at no cost for consumers, municipalities and businesses. The organization, which is funded by manufacturers of batteries or products containing batteries, ensures that these items are responsibly recycled to create new batteries and other products, preventing potentially hazardous materials from entering the solid waste stream.

Where to recycle

Now that you’ve committed to

(or at least attempted to) recycling your old stuff, you need to know how and where. For rechargeable batteries and cell phones, Call2Recycle has a network of more than 34,000 public collection sites located within 10 miles of 89 percent of consumers in the U.S. and Canada, including popular national retailers. To find a participating location nearest you, visit call2recycle.org. Recycling rechargeable batteries can be a quick, easy and convenient part of almost any shopping trip. For other items, visit Recycle Nation or Earth911.com for a list of recycling options. Whatever the motivation, recycling rechargeable batteries is smart because it helps the environment by decreasing the materials that go into the landfill. As you get ready to fix up your home this fall, think of how you can avoid green guilt and take that extra step to recycle rechargeable batteries and other household waste.

Key steps to winterizing a home By RICHARD JENKINS

rjenkins@yourdailyglobe.com

HURLEY — While most residents of the Gogebic Range don’t want to think about it, winter and cold weather are quickly approaching. Greg Loreti, a manager at Giovanoni True Value Hardware, offers area residents several tips to winterize their homes before the cold comes.

Furnace maintenance

Loreti urges residents to ensure that their furnaces, boilers and wood stoves are maintained and functioning. Homeowners should check the pipes — and venting for furnaces — of their units to ensure they are solidly connected and without rust. They should also be checked to see if cleaning is necessary before the cold weather sets in. As part of the general maintenance of the heating units, Loreti said it is important to remember to replace furnace filters as needed. “Don’t let it get away from you,” Loreti said. The filters come in a variety of sizes, depending on the make of the furnace. They can come in different grades, usually lasting for either 30, 60 and 90 days. If the filters are allowed to degrade and aren’t changed frequently, Loreti said, the result is wasted energy and higher utility costs.

If homeowners are unsure of how to repair or maintain their units, Loreti urges they contact a professional, rather than messing around themselves. “We do have furnace and boiler repair personnel here,” Loreti said, “If you can’t do it yourself, give us a call.” Loreti also encourages having a carbon monoxide detector installed in a basement near any heating unit to ensure a carbon monoxide leak doesn’t lead to tragedy. For wood stoves and heaters, Loreti said it is important to inspect the rope gasket around the doors of the units. These gaskets create a seal around the door and prevent smoke, and possibly flames, from leaking into the house. The exact amount of time a gasket lasts depends on the amount a unit is used, Loreti said. He also warned homeowners to check the chimneys of their fireplaces and wood stoves to ensure creosote hasn’t built up to prevent chimney fires, adding it should be done year-round and not restricted to winter.

Other weatherization tips

In addition to maintenance to a house’s heating unit, Loreti encouraged adding several other items to the winter maintenance check list. In addition to the general

weatherization of a house — such as caulking and weatherstripping around the windows as needed — Loreti said taking steps to ensure pipes don’t freeze was a key to preventing winter disasters. “If you have exposed water pipes, have heat tape on them to prevent freezing,” Loreti said, explaining the tape has 2 to 3 watts of current running through it to heat the pipes. For those who leave for the winter, there are several options on the market that are available to monitor a house when residents aren’t there. “There’s one popular thing called the Winter Watchman, and that’s a thermostat that controls a light in the window, so if the temperature drops below whatever you set it at, this light goes on and alerts the neighbor to check it out,” Loreti said, adding there are also now thermostats that can be monitored via a smart phone. There isn’t an exact temperature — other than freezing — that Loreti encourages people keep their houses above, saying that he has seen numbers ranging from 45 to 60 degrees depending on how frugal and brave the homeowner was. Further questions on home winterization can be found by calling the store at 715-5614141.

A little education goes a long way when choosing shingles (BPT) — Shopping for an engagement ring can be confusing. But knowing the 4 Cs of picking a diamond — Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat — can help consumers get the best gem for their money. Shopping for roof shingles can be confusing, too. But knowing the 3 Cs of buying a new roof — Cut, Color and Coverage — can help consumers choose the best roof for their home and make the entire process easier and less expensive.

1. Cut

Cut refers to the shape of the shingle and can have a huge impact on a roof’s appearance. Depending on the cut, specialty laminated asphalt shingles can give the illusion of wood shake shingles. Other options can resemble stone, slate or tile.

Shingle cut can also give a modern or vintage look to a home, so it’s important to choose a cut that fits the style of the rest of your house. The shingle cut can also affect the installation speed and the cost of your roof. The shingle

application method shown here http://bit.ly/1dORpuC can help speed installation and reduce waste.

2. Color

Color trends include high-contrast options like Rustic Evergreen and Glacier White, as well as a popular move toward natural colors emulating the vibrant tones found in nature. “People are getting creative with their roofing — it’s not just utilitarian anymore,” said Stephen McNally, vice president of sales and marketing at TAMKO Building Products. “People are seeing it as a palette — one of the first things visitors notice about the house.” When choosing a color, take into account the exterior color of your home, including siding, shutters, porch and front door. 3. Coverage

It’s important to understand the warranty on your roofing system. Coverage includes which items are under warranty, under what circumstances the roof is warranted and for what amount of time. Most roof warranties don’t guarantee your roof will last 3050 years, but do provide options if you experience a manufacturing defect during the warranted time frame. Look for a warranty with longer “upfront” coverage, as these typically offer more time during which both materials and labor to install replacement shingles would be covered (tear off, removal and disposal is typically not covered).

Manufacturers’ warranties don’t cover regular wear and tear of your roof and weather damage is also not typically covered by manufacturers, which is where your home insurance comes into play. Also, many times problems with a roof are the result of improper installation, so make sure to choose a reputable local roofing contractor, preferably a preferred installer who has received training from the company that manufactured the shingles. Also, ask whether your contractor offers a separate warranty for the installation of the product and for what period of time. Understanding these three Cs of roofing can help you buy a “gem” of a roof and hopefully save time and money. For more tips on choosing a roof, visit TAMKO.com.

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT 4 winter-blues-busting home improvement projects

4 l SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2015

(BPT) — Three percent of the U.S. population suffers from seasonal affective disorder every winter, according to Psychology Today. But you don’t have to be diagnosed with an actual disorder to suffer a bad case of the winter blues — it can happen to anyone. Since climate and environment have a lot to do with causing winter doldrums, you might find engaging in some home improvement projects can make you feel happier and healthier this winter. Freshening your space can feel good any time of year, but certain projects are perfectly aligned to give you a much-needed mood boost when it turns cold or wet weather sets in. Here are four projects that not only can brighten your outlook, they can also be good for your wallet:

Install skylights

Avoiding SAD is preferable to treatment and skylights can help you maximize the amount of natural light that enters your home this winter. More natural light is

good for you on many levels. Sunlight stimulates the body’s production of Vitamin D and increases the levels of serotonin in your brain; lower serotonin levels are thought to be associated with depression, lack of energy, elevated appetite and excessive sleepiness. What’s more, if you opt for Energy Star-qualified solar-powered fresh-air skylights. These skylights can also help improve indoor air quality. They open, providing passive ventilation to allow stale indoor air to escape and fresh air to enter, and they close automatically in case of rain. Skylights can also be good for your financial health. Solar powered skylights, along with solar powered blinds, as well as installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. Also, more natural light in your home on a dark winter day can help decrease your need for artificial lighting. And sunshine can help warm the interior of your home and support the work your furnace does to keep the

more, when the garage gets cold, it can affect the comfort of rooms around and above it. Have a game room over the garage that’s chilly in winter? The garage door could be to blame. house comfortable. Skylights can be installed in many areas of your home with kitchens and baths being among the most popular choices for more natural light, fresh air, and privacy. Even areas without direct roof access, like hallways and closets, can benefit from more natural light through tubularskylights. Visit whyskylights.com to learn more.

Replace your garage door

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t think much about your garage door or the impact it has on how your home looks and feels. Yet the garage door is a huge surface area that directly affects your home’s curb appeal and its ability to retain heat in the winter. A great deal of warm air can escape a home through an uninsulated garage door. What’s

If you’re already bummed by winter, having to live with old, beat-up, inefficient appliances will only add to your frustration. Plus, older appliances generally use more electricity and water than newer models. Replacing an old refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer or dryer with Energy Star-qualified appliances can help reduce your energy and water consumption — and bills. It’s also an improvement that you can feel good about because it’s the perfect marriage of practicality (you really need appliances that function well) and enjoyment (all

those bells and whistles just make the work more fun).

Declutter and add organizers

You may not think of cleanup as a legitimate home improvement, but decluttering and organizing your environment can definitely boost your mood. In American homes, the problem of clutter has reached staggering proportions. More than half of Americans (54 percent) say they feel overwhelmed by the amount of clutter in their homes, and 78 percent have no idea what to do with it, according to a recent survey by the National Association for Professional Organizers and Declualsottr.com. Grab some trash bags and start cleaning house. Trash the things that are clearly junk, donate things that are still usable but not by you and set aside the things you want to keep. Invest in some closet, cabinet and drawer organizers. Add storage cubbies to a mud room or entryway and create storage space in your garage.

Pops of color

“Nothing livens up a room like a bright pop of color,” Yoder said. If you have neutral-toned furniture, try sprucing up the room with lamps, curtains and accessories in bold hues. If you’re up for a painting challenge, an accent wall is a great way to incorporate color into a space. Choose your favorite color from a throw pillow or wall-art piece in the room to pull the look together.

Varying textures

A room tends to get boring when it focuses on only one texture, so it’s important to create a sense of balance. Try varying the fabric types on your sofa and curtains. Add in some metal or wooden accents to draw the eye around the room. You can even play with lighting to reflect off certain objects and create visual interest.

Antique feature

Choose an antique or unique piece of décor to be the inspiration for the room. This could be a rug, lamp, chair or even a chandelier - anything that gets you energized and motivated. Get creative and run with the theme it creates. Or if your style is more on the modern side, an antique object will stand out among your contemporary décor.

Symmetrical yet functional

The furniture collection in a room should form a restful, sym-

metrical layout. It’s all about balance. There should be between three and 10 feet between each seat. Additionally, instead of pushing each piece up against the wall to create more space, give your furniture a bit of breathing room a few inches from the wall. This makes the room appear open and airy.

Clutter-free organization

Getting rid of clutter is a grand challenge for most homeowners. When you decide to take on the mess, drawers and cabinets are your best friends. Take some time to go through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate or throw away. Store any leftover items that can cause clutter in an organized, out-of-sight area. Use these tips to revitalize your space and you’ll be ready to confidently host gatherings and enjoy your home instead of shying away from your living space.

Local horticulturists offers tips for fall’s proactive lawn care By KELSEY HANSEN

news@yourdailyglobe.com

There are several actions homeowners can take in the fall to promote a healthy and beautiful lawn. Klaus Buschalla, owner of Klaus’ Lawn & Garden Landscaping Services, has more than 30 years of experience with a background and degree in botany, as well as horticulture. Buschalla shared some of these steps homeowners can take for proactive lawn care in the fall. Fertilization in the fall is a key component to ensure a healthy lawn and plants come springtime. “Fertilization in the fall always helps the plant to establish strong root systems because all their energy for winter is then stored in the roots,” Buschalla. Buschalla also said weed control is a great action to take before the snow falls. “People don’t think about weed control in the fall but all plants store their food for winter in the roots,” he said. And as previously mentioned,

fall is a key time for plants and weeds in establishing their root system. “All perennial weeds, for example dandelions, it’s actually better to try and control them in the fall than in the springtime. It just works better in the fall.” Another action homeowners might want to take on in the fall is liming their lawn. “The other thing that people don’t think about, especially for lawns, is we have very acidic soil here. So to have a good fertilizer intake, the pH of the soil has to be more neutral and you do that with lime,” Buschalla said. Buschalla said lime, even pelletized lime, typically takes anywhere from two to three months to really work and get into the soil to change the pH levels. Therefore liming in the fall is a lot better than liming in the spring because you are not wasting time waiting for the soil to neutralize before planting anything. The fall is also an excellent time to plant anything new in the yard, like shrubs or trees. “It makes it a lot easier for the

homeowner because if you plant in the fall, especially if you can buy and plant stuff that’s already dormant or lost its leaves, you don’t really have to water it a lot or worry about it,” Buschalla said. Once the natural moisture of next springtime comes along, the shrubs and trees you planted in the fall will take off on their own from there. “My favorite time to plant is in the fall. For me as a commercial person then I don’t have to worry,” Buschalla said. Many times he said homeowners are very good about taking care of their new plants in the first week and then slowly lose that vigor in maintenance and upkeep. “So if you do plant in the fall it makes it a lot easier for the homeowner in the long run,” Buschalla said. Another helpful tip for lawn care in the fall is getting rid of lots of leaves and needles, especially if it’s a heavy cover over your lawn and plants. “It will choke out the plants and choke out the air that the

plants need to grow and flourish.” A heavy cover of leaves and needles will also lead to more acidity as well as bigger issues, like fungus diseases and snow mold underneath the grass Buschalla said. “If you have a minor amount of leaves just chopping them up won’t hurt because it will give nutrients back to the plant. If you have pine trees, definitely get rid of your pine needles though.” A final tip homeowners can do for their lawns in the fall is aeration. “It doesn’t hurt to use some sort of aeration on a lawn, especially if you’re using a real heavy mower at all times and your soil compacts or if you have a lot of traffic on your lawn,” Buschalla said. He said renting an aerator from a company to open up your lawn will do a lot of good for it. Describing it like the pores on your skin, Buschalla said aerating will open the lawn up and allow for beneficial bacteria to grow.

(StatePoint) — If you’re buying a home, there are additional expenses you may want to budget for beyond the down payment and monthly mortgage. Home projects, even small ones, can really add up. Recent data from HomeAdvisor, a leading home services marketplace, reveals that 75 percent of homebuyers will face a costly emergency within the first 12 months of moving into a new home. From unplanned projects to unexpected emergencies, most homebuyers reported spending more time and money on projects than they initially anticipated. The most frequent emergen-

cy projects reported by homebuyers in the first year of owning a new home included blocked toilets and pipes, a clogged drain, a broken heating or cooling system and water leaks. These unexpected projects can cost homeowners anywhere from $199 to fix a clogged drain to $2,068 to repair water damage according to HomeAdvisor’s True Cost Guide. “To help prepare for these unexpected costs, homebuyers should plan to spend one-percent of their home purchase price on repairs and emergencies each year,” said Marianne Cusato, special housing advisor to HomeAdvisor.

4 tips to tackle any DIY project

(BPT) — It’s that time of year again: project season. It’s time to open the windows, reimagine your space and get to work on the home improvement project you’ve been dreaming about all winter. This is an exciting time of year but before you jump in with booted feet and work-gloved hands, you need to do a little planning. “I’ve found the best results are achieved when you have a plan in mind,” says Carter Oosterhouse, one of America’s most recognized home-improvement experts featured on many popular TV shows on HGTV. “There’s certainly a time for spontaneity, but you should have a vision of

your finished work and know where you’re going before you pick up that first tool.” This summer, Carter is partnering with the makers of Advil(R) to offer these preparation tips and ensure the project you’ve been dreaming about is set up for success.

Know when to rent and when to buy

No matter what type of DIY project you’re planning, you’re going to need some tools. It doesn’t mean you need to own all of them. Smaller tools, such as screwdrivers or hammers, are worth buying because you’ll use them in the future. However, if

you need larger tools like floor sanders, carpet cleaners and big power tools, you’re probably better off renting those instead. Before you make any big purchase, ask yourself if you’ll ever use it again. If the answer is no rent it from your local home improvement store. You’ll save the money and space.

Don’t ignore your pain

DIY projects can be hard work especially if they involve the repetitive use of muscles you may not commonly use. With these types of projects, soreness and pain are common during the work and afterwards. Don’t ignore the pain or allow it to

affect your productivity, consider Advil(R). Advil(R) offers fast, long-lasting relief for several types of pain, including the muscle aches, backaches and joint pain common with DIY projects.

Have the right tools on hand

Some tools have a place in just about every project, so it’s a good idea to keep a collection of these often-used tools nearby. Your goto tool collection should include a hammer, tape measure, drill, saw, sander, glue, level, and an assortment of screwdrivers. You won’t use all of these tools on every project but it’s a safe bet you can find a use for a few of them on any project.

Safety first

Your beautiful project won’t be worth your efforts if you get injured in the process. To keep yourself and your project partners healthy, remember these common DIY project safety practices when you tackle any DIY goal: —Always wear safety glasses and a mask when appropriate. —Situate ladders on level ground, avoid stepping on the top two rungs, and always use a spotter for taller climbs. —If you’re working on an electrical project, make sure your environment is water and moisture free. You should also wear rubber-soled shoes for safety.

—Keep your work area well-lit and clean. The better you can see, the better you can avoid accidents, slips and falls. —When using sharp objects, cut away from your body and never leave power tools unattended. —Always keep a first-aid kit and fire extinguisher nearby. No one likes to think the worst but it’s good to know you’re ready if it happens. Completing a DIY project can be a rewarding experience that improves your home for years to come. So grab your tool belt and start planning, because making your dream projects a reality depends on you.

Tips for fall Defining home improvement ROI not just about the money clean-up projects (BPT) — If home improvement was only about increasing a home’s resale value, perhaps more people would live in homes that had steel entry doors, manufactured stone veneer and/or vinyl siding and interior walls that were a uniform beige. But when you’re calculating the potential return on investment of any home improvement project, you need to consider more than just the cost. In addition to resale value, your ROI calculations should also take into account the emotional satisfaction of a project, how it will affect your enjoyment of your home, and its impact on the house’s livability. Some projects definitely return more of their investment at the time of resale — like that steel front door. But not everyone will fall in love with how a steel door looks, and may find the richness of wood more aesthetically satisfying. Other projects may really boost your enjoyment of your home, but be problematic when you one day want to sell; inground pools come to mind. While some improvements you do because you have to — such as replacing the roof — a few home improvements positively affect resale value, increase a home’s livability and elevate your enjoyment. These are the projects that you also do because you want to. Here are a handful of home improvements that meet all the criteria for a great investment not only when you sell but while

also be deeply satisfying emotionally, giving you a chance to express your creativity while achieving gains in usability at the same time. In practical terms, new kitchen appliances tend to be more feature-rich, usable and energy-efficient than older models. The same is true of kitchen faucets, which can allow you to waste less water or even thwart the spread of germs. New cabinets and countertops expand storage and work space while redefining the entire look of the kitchen. Brand Point

you’re living in the home:

Skylights

In the realm of home improvements, adding skylights is one of least expensive upgrades you can choose for the functionality and appearance benefits they provide. You get a healthy nudge in resale value plus significant emotional and aesthetic benefits. Skylights, which are particularly popular in kitchens and baths, admit more natural light into a home — which is always appealing to buyers — so when you’re selling, rooms with skylights will appear bigger, airy and more inviting. While you’re still living in the home, you’ll reap the psychological and health benefits of more natural light and ventilation. Opt for Energy Star-qualified, solar-powered, fresh-air sky-

lights and you can use the skylight not only for natural light but to provide passive ventilation that improves indoor air quality. Some skylights come with programmable touch pad remote to operate not only the skylights but also energy-efficiency-boosting accessories like blinds in designer colors and patterns. What’s more, solar powered skylights and blinds, along with installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. To learn more visit whyskylights.com.

Kitchen remodel

A minor kitchen remodel of around $20,000 returns nearly 80 percent of your investment when you sell your home, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report. Upgrading your kitchen can

Bath remodel

Bathrooms help sell homes, and remodeling yours can recoup 70 percent of the investment cost when you sell your home, according to Remodeling Magazine. Since bathrooms are far more important than their practical purpose, an improved bathroom can realign how you feel about your living space. A soaking tub, great shower experience, fresh finishes and even fresh paint can all deliver more positive feelings about your bathroom. What’s more, replacing older faucets and fixtures can actually give you the satisfaction of reducing your water bill. Newer toilets, showerheads and faucets use less water to deliver the same quality of experience as older, less efficient models. Curbing water waste can save you money — and that’s something anyone can feel good about.

(StatePoint) — Fall is the ideal season to tick items off your home exterior to-do list. The weather is finally cooler, making the work more enjoyable; and a thorough fall clean-up will give you peace of mind all winter. Your MVP during home maintenance season can be the pressure washer. Up to 75 times more powerful than a garden hose, a pressure washer is a versatile tool that offers an efficient way to get a variety of cleaning tasks done.

Deck

Once you’re ready to stash away outdoor furniture for the season, remember to wash it down first for a deeper clean than a garden hose can provide. Before moving these items into storage, first let them dry completely. Ensure your deck is free of mold and debris. A thorough clean will also serve to prep your deck for weatherproofing with a stain or sealant (another useful task to include on your fall checklist.)

Outdoor surfaces

Rejuvenate driveways, patios, sidewalks and other large flat surfaces quickly with a power washer. Some spraying units feature a dome shape to control overspray to protect walls and flower beds.

Grill

Cleaning your grill is a breeze with a pressure washer. First disconnect the propane tank and move it away from the area. Dis-

connect any electrical lines. Prop up the hood and remove the grates. Treat the entire grill with a degreasing solution, working from the bottom of the cart up to the grill bed. Let the degreaser work for a few minutes. Be careful around gas hoses, connections, electrical components or heating elements. Using a general medium-pressure spray pattern, flush detergent and rinse any residue, working from the top down. Let the grill dry thoroughly, then coat with nonstick oil to help reduce future build-up.

Safety

Operate a pressure washer only outside, far away from windows, doors and vents to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide gas from accumulating and potentially being drawn towards occupied spaces. Always wear goggles and closed-toe footwear when operating a pressure washer. Don’t spray near children, pets, electrical wires, or power lines. After use, allow the unit to cool down before storing.

Efficiency

To switch between jobs more efficiently, consider a unit that offers versatility in its function, like a power washer equipped to handle hard walkways and rinse away soap and debris on delicate surfaces like patio furniture, vehicles and second story windows. This fall, get ready for winter with quick and simple outdoor clean-up tasks.

Many options available for adding storage sheds By RALPH ANSAMI

ransami@yourdailyglobe.com

IRONWOOD — Many area homeowners who find they have accumulated too much stuff for their homes and garages are turning to purchasing storage sheds. The sheds can be purchased from many businesses, with various sidings available. Gus Forslund, at Forslund’s Building Supply in Ironwood, said his company constructs the storage sheds out of pressboards, and the homeowner can then choose the paint color to match the house or garage. Forslund said he has an employee from Wakefield who specializes in constructing the utility sheds, which can be made to any size or style requested by the homeowner. “We have gable sheds, sheds that look like little barns and what they call salt boxes,” Forslund said. He said the utility sheds can be constructed with vinyl siding, if that’s what the customer wants. Forslund estimated his Ironwood business constructs around 20 sheds per year and he said that’s been a steady number. Some people prefer cedar sheds. David Beaulieu, a landscaping

expert with about.com, said of the outdoor storage sheds he has priced recently, those sided with cedar and vinyl were only a few hundred dollars more than outbuildings sided with lower-quality materials. He advises shed purchasers to consider how much those f e w hundred dollars are buying before rejecting cedar or vinyl. “Remember that outdoor storage sheds are not merely utilitarian items. In addition to their utility, the appearance of outdoor storage sheds affects the overall appearance of the property on which they are installed,” Beaulieu said. Forslund agreed that it is important to match the color of the shed with the nearest building, whether it be the house or garage. The unit should be of a design that complements the home, Beaulieu advises, such as a rustic design for a country-style house. “Plants can help outdoor storage sheds blend into a landscape, rather than sticking out like sore thumbs. Open up and plant annual or perennial beds around your (storage) unit,” Beaulieu advises. He said coating cedar with a UV-inhibiting sealer/preserva-

Smart house: Five ideas to raise a home’s I.Q. hand over it to turn it on and off, or by placing your hands or an object under its spout.

(StatePoint) — Remember the first time you met that “out of this world” family, the Jetsons? Fast forward to today, and it suddenly isn’t all that far-fetched. While we may not have flying cars or robot maids just yet, the idea of a “smart home” is real. These five upgrades can go a long way to boost the intelligence of your house.

Tech-savvy details

Worried about what your appliances are up to when you’re gone? New smart appliances have technology that now allows consumers to access appliances remotely. You can manage refrigerator temperature or lock the dishwasher control console and see when the washer cycle is complete, all from a connected application on a smart device.

High-tech hub

The kitchen is the hub of the home and it sees much more than just meal prep and dinner time. From homework to casual conversation, your family expects more from this already hard-working space. In fact, the kitchen is the number one room where homeowners would like to incorporate technology, according to a recent research study by Moen. One-third of homeowners charge devices in the kitchen, according to the Moen study. You can make this task simpler and cord-free with new countertops which features wireless chargers seamlessly embedded into its surface. Or install a docking and charging station with a built-in USB power strip to maximize the number of devices you can charge at once.

Hands-free faucet

Wireless speakers

Long gone are the days of shuttling a portable stereo from room to room. A smart system of HiFi wireless speakers and audio components can unite a digital music collection.

Mood lighting

At the top of consumers’ kitchen tech wish list is a hands-free faucet, for good reason. The new faucets can sense what you’re trying to accomplish, and with a

What to know before upgrading a home’s HVAC system (StatePoint) — Not all home upgrades require a ton of research. But for more complicated repairs and replacements, being informed can help you make better decisions. For example, replacing your home’s HVAC system is one thing you want to get right, as a good decision can benefit both your comfort and pocketbook for years to come. “Before talking to a contractor, homeowners should be prepared with questions,” says Karl Zellmer, VP of Air Conditioning at Emerson Climate Technologies. According to Zellmer, here are some important factors to consider and questions to discuss with your contractor: —What size or capacity system is right for my home? —What is the expected life span of my current system? —How much should I plan to pay for a new system if mine has to be replaced? —How much will my monthly energy bill be reduced with a new system? Are there ways to reduce it even more?

—Will the new system reliably produce the desired air temperature and humidity levels evenly throughout my home? —What maintenance will the new system require? Will it automatically notify me when it needs servicing or repair? —What are the contractor’s qualifications? Can they provide referrals from previous customers? —Is my system environmentally-friendly? Are there any government and utility rebates available for buying certain “high efficiency” equipment? —Am I going to be adequately covered by a warranty and how long will I be covered? —Am I purchasing the most up-to-date technology available? For example, will I be able to remotely monitor and control my home’s climate via the internet or a mobile device? To view the results from recent homeowner research, and to learn more about what type of system might be best for your home, free resources are available at acheatingconnect.com.

Modern design tips to set a home apart

(StatePoint) — If it’s time for a remodel — or even just a refresh of your home’s dated décor — it may be time to think modern. Innovations in technology and design can offer your home efficiency, luxury and sophistication, and even improve your home’s resale value. Here are a few trends to consider.

New kitchen

StatePoint

Switching to LED bulbs becoming more affordable, appealing (StatePoint) — The use of LED bulbs in homes is on the rise nationwide, and with good reason. Not only are they more energy efficient than their traditional counterparts, LEDs are becoming more affordable upfront. Indeed, of the United States’ four billion residential light bulb sockets, less than 10 percent are filled with LED lighting; but by 2020, more than 50 percent will be LED, according to industry estimates. This year alone, the consumer lighting market is anticipated to more than double with LED, while traditional CFL bulb usage is expected to decrease. LED is not a new technology and has been on the market for

years. So what is driving this sudden consumer shift? New light bulb designs are making these cost-efficient bulbs more convenient, attractive and affordable. In fact, certain designs retail as low as under $10 for a threepack of bulbs. The newer LED bulbs come with a slender, sleek design and are offered both in soft white and daylight. They fit in more sockets and fixtures compared to its general purpose CFL bulb counterpart. Some new LED bulbs are rated for a life of 15,000 hours and should last nearly 14 years, at a cost of 10 cents per month based on three hours of operation daily and 11 cents per kilowatt

THE DAILY GLOBE • YOURDAILYGLOBE.COM

hour. Consider new LED bulbs for existing CFL sockets found in basements, sheds and garages to table and floor lamps, adding up to substantial energy savings over time. To learn more about innovations in LED lighting, get lighting tips for any room of the house, or to find out how much you stand to save making the swap, visit simple gelighting.com. You don’t need to be a skilled handyman to make an important, planet-friendly home upgrade that will save your family time and money for years to come. This weekend, consider trading in your traditional bulbs for a more modern variety.

Whatever purpose your kitchen serves, be it simply a workplace for meal prep or the hub of the home, you can give the room a clean modern look while retaining its functionality and aesthetic appeal. Stainless steel appliances and hardware coupled with butcher block countertops harmonize nicely and are beautiful design elements that lend themselves to both modern form and function. Modern design is all about streamlined simplicity, so use this opportunity to rid your

kitchen of clunky, clutter-causing gadgets you don’t use — especially those that don’t match your updated look.

Fireplace

The hearth has been, and continues to be, the heart of the home. While fireplaces may no longer serve as the primary way people heat their homes, they continue to be a focal point, both aesthetically and as a gathering place for family and friends, even in spaces characterized by modern design. New gas fireplace designs are focusing on clean lines, sometimes replacing logs with materials like crushed glass, and the traditional masonry look with metallic fronts. Also consider incorporating a fireplace into your kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom or anywhere you want to create ambiance with a stunning focal point. Check out options specifically designed to fit smaller

rooms or unique spaces. From a resale perspective, a fireplace adds $3,600 on average to the value of a home, and creates a design focal point that sets it apart from the rest of the inventory on the market.

Hidden storage

For a modern look, the more devoid your space is of clutter, the better. And this goal in minimalism is informing many homeowners’ design decisions. Look for spaces that can serve as hidden, unique storage solutions, like carve outs or drawers that extend from under the staircase or storage spaces built between rooms. These modern twists on traditional storage will allow you to keep those items you need, but don’t want displayed, out of sight but not out of mind. Modern design can set your home apart, offering sophistication and efficiency without compromising comfort.

StatePoint

Four common kitchen cleaning conundrums solved (StatePoint) — The kitchen is the perfect place for family time, entertaining and socializing. With all this activity, it’s bound to get a little disorganized. What’s more, the kitchen is actually listed as the “germiest” area in the home, according to a study by the National Sanitation Foundation. Have no fear. Simple solutions can combat common kitchen cleaning conundrums.

Messy pantry

It’s no secret that many homeowners keep pantry doors shut for a reason — it can get a little chaotic inside. Kick the clutter. If an item has been

in the pantry for three months or more, you likely won’t use it. Toss expired items and donate any non-perishables you aren’t going to use. Next, wipe down pantry shelves to remove dust and crumbs from hard-toreach corners. Before restocking shelves, lay down a non-adhesive shelf liner to protect newly cleaned shelves. Look for a product with antimicrobial protection on the liner to help prevent the growth of odor-causing mold and mildew. Some are also machine-washable, so when a big spill does come along, you can just toss the liner in the wash. Soon, you’ll have a clean pantry you’ll

want to show off.

Refrigerator leaks

Between fresh produce, dairy, meat and leftovers, there’s a lot going on inside a fridge. Make it a habit every few months to wash the inside of your refrigerator, even the shelves and drawers (a location where many stubborn spills tend to be forgotten). A natural cleaning solution, is best for this area in the kitchen and the environment. It won’t leave behind harsh chemical fumes or residue.

Dirty, smelly sponges

Sponges are a kitchen staple, and

also the germiest item in the entire kitchen, according to NSF research. And after only a few uses, they can develop a foul-smelling odor. Luckily, there’s a quick fix for getting a sponge back in proper cleaning condition. Simply wet the sponge and pop it in the microwave for two minutes to eliminate germs.

Grimy cabinets, streaky surfaces

From greasy little hands going in for snacks to frequent opening and closing during meal-prep, grease and grime on kitchen cabinets and door handles can accumulate quickly — spreading germs and making your kitchen look dirty.

Use a disinfectant wipe to disinfect and deodorize cabinets and other nonporous surfaces. First, remove any excess debris and then use enough wipes for the surface to remain visibly wet for four minutes. For food-contact surfaces, rinse with clean water. To clean hard, nonporous kitchen cabinet exteriors, wipe the cabinet on the outside and let it dry. Making it a practice to wipe down cabinets weekly will prevent a lot of grease and build-up in the long run. Carve out an afternoon for cleaning remedies that will knock out the mess and pesky germs in no time.

Install insulation to increase home value By TOM STANKARD

tstankard@yourdailyglobe.com

BESSEMER — As cold winter months approach, now is the time to think about installing insulation. Used to stop the flow of heat, insulation increases the efficiency of a homeowner’s heating and air conditioning systems and ideally stops drafts and uneven temperatures. According to Todd Johnson, Steiger Home Center Vice President, insulation performance is measured through a common Rvalue standard. An R-value measures resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the more efficient the insulation. Every climate zone has a recommended R-value assigned by the U.S. Department of Energy. The western Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin areas are in zone 7. The USDE recommends R-49 in a home’s attic and R-19 to 21 in wood-frame walls. Insulation comes in different types, used for different purposes.

Exterior walls

For exterior walls, Johnson said he recommends homeowners install fiberglass insulation rolls. They come with or without paper backing, Johnson said the paper serves two purposes. “The paper serves as a vapor barrier,” he said. “The paper also aids in keeping it up so it doesn’t fall down in your wall cavity. You don’t want it falling down on you. You want it to stay up and do the job it’s intended to do.” If installed properly, Johnson said fiberglass insulation rolls are easy to install. “To put it up, put the vapor

barrier toward the outside, so the pink stuff is facing you. Then use staples to staple it to the wall studs,” he said. Johnson said using fiberglass insulation rolls is convenient for homeowners. “This kind of insulation is easy to install. It’s not expensive. You don’t need any special equipment and you can fish wire or a conduit through it; and it’s formaldehyde-free,” he said.

Attics

In an attic, Johnson recommends fiberglass blown insulation. Johnson said it is quick and easy to install. According to Johnson, each brand type is particular about how it needs to be pushed through the machine. In the blower, Johnson said the glass fibers roll around until they are blown through a long hose. While in the blower, Johnson said the R-value increases. When installing blown insulation, Johnson said the homeowner holds the hose and aims it around the attic. For safety concerns, Johnson said the homeowner should wear a mask and goggles when spraying. Johnson said blown insulation is efficient. “It’s going to help the person’s heating bill immensely,” he said. “The more inches of insulation you put down, the more R value you get out of it.”

Arborist shares 9 necessary tips for using a chainsaw (BPT) — Whether cleaning up from a storm of high winds or just general maintenance of trees around one’s property, a chainsaw can be an important, yet dangerous, tool. storm clean-up Often, requires participation from volunteers who supplement the work of experts in removing miles of debris. Many are weekend warriors who have never tackled such an immense task and may never have used a chainsaw in such rigorous circumstances. Those brave volunteers need some guidance on how to prepare for, use and maintain a chainsaw during intense storm clean-up efforts. Jared Abrojena, an Antioch,

California-based certified treeworker and certified arborist, addresses the topic in layman’s terms. The 2015 ISA Tree Climbing World Champion, Abrojena is an expert on how to trim and fell trees. He often shares insights from his own experience working with a team of arborists to clean hundreds of fallen trees on the grounds of the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, just weeks before the 2013 Masters. Abrojena’s nine necessary tips — if followed — ensures that the work of brave storm clean-up volunteers is safe and effective. They are: —Safety first. Take some time to train before getting started. Assess the full scope of damage, and creating a plan for how to tackle it. The plan should include coordinating with other volunteers, divvying up the work and prioritizing —Know your limitations. Don’t volunteer for a job you’re unprepared for. There will be plenty of work to go around, so only tackle tasks that you are comfortable handling. —Buddy up. No one should trim trees by themselves, given the risk of error or injury. Pair

Don’t “cut” corners during intense, fast-paced clean-up efforts. —The right cut. To achieve the right cut, use careful pruning practices to relieve tension from a branch or tree limb. —Take it easy. You aren’t Superman, and most mistakes occur when you’re tired. Take frequent rests and stay hydrated. —Pamper your equipment. Ongoing maintenance during storm clean-up is critical, since you’ll be pushing your chainsaw hard. Pause often to clean filters and tighten chains.

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT High-tech shower upgrade can reinvigorate bathroom

10 l SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2015

(BPT) — Any real estate agent will tell you great bathrooms help sell homes. But what if you’re not planning to sell any time soon and still want to have a memorable, attention-grabbing room? Start by upgrading your shower; it’s the heart of creating an amazing bathroom. A relaxing shower at the end of a tough day is one of the fastest, most effective ways to unwind. And an invigorating shower in the morning can set the stage for a positive day. No other element in the bathroom provides a better chance to pamper yourself with luxury, while still serving a vital, practical purpose. Creating a custom shower experience — tailored to your tastes and needs — doesn’t have to be as pricey as you think. Showers are actually among the least costly parts of the bath to upgrade. Nor does it have to involve extensive renovation. A few simple changes can help you achieve a top-notch shower experience without taking a bath on costs.

Showerhead choices

The showerhead is, of course, the heart of the shower. Simply replacing a utilitarian showerhead with one that features multiple settings can be a major step up, but why stop there? There

are an array of showerheads and changing a showerhead can be the quickest (and possibly easiest) way to transform your shower experience. Multi-spray, single-spray, rainfall, shower arms and hand showers can work together in virtually any combination you choose. Showerheads can be mounted on the wall or ceiling, depending on the model you choose. Many showerheads feature air injection technology that provides a powerful spray even when water pressure is low (or strictly regulated). Various models are water efficient, so while you’re doing something for yourself, you’re also helping the environment by conserving water. Most showerhead changes can operate off existing plumbing, but consult a plumbing professional when you feel a bit in over your DIY head. Visit danze.com to learn more.

ulation — from low and relaxing to bright and invigorating. Ceiling-mounted chromatherapy lights use the color spectrum to further enhance mood in your shower. Cables of LED lights at the top or bottom of a shower enclosure can accent the space and provide gentle, low-level light. Sconces and overhead lighting can help fully illuminate the shower when needed. Waterproof radios first introduced Americans to the idea of musical accompaniment to their shower experience. Now it’s possible to plug your iPod into your home’s audio system and stream your favorite music directly into the bathroom. If your home’s not that hightech, you can still listen to your tunes in the shower by simply adding portable and waterproof speakers in the bathroom. These Bluetooth enabled speakers let you stream the music directly into the shower.

Light and music have a powerful effect on mood, so it makes sense to incorporate their emotional impact into your shower experience. Shower lighting now goes way beyond a single recessed canister light set in the ceiling above the shower. Dimmable lighting allows you to control the amount of light stim-

Seating in the shower is no longer just for older folks. Stylish, portable shower seats now make it possible to rest while you’re relaxing in the shower. You can also opt for a wall-mounted seat that folds flat to the wall when not in use. Short on space in the shower? Opt for a corner seat — you can

find removable corner stools or wall-mounted options. Consider adding a foot rest to make shaving easier. Again, options range from wall-mounted designs that match your shower’s existing hardware, to portable options that can be removed and tucked away when not in use.

The shower isn’t just a place Americans go to get clean, it’s an important part of your home that can directly impact your mood and sense of wellbeing. Creating a custom shower experience can be a cost-effective way to upgrade your bathroom and take care of your emotional health, too.

7 steps for simplifying your next painting project (BPT) — If you’re considering a household painting project, now’s the perfect time. The summer’s hottest days are in the past and winter’s frigid temperatures aren’t even on your radar. Whether you plan to paint your kitchen, a hallway, outdoor siding or a refurbished piece of furniture, keep in mind a few helpful tips from the experts at Olympic(R) Paint to make your project flow a little bit easier. —Patch holes and imperfections. For better or worse, painting a room allows you to examine all of the walls and find any imperfections in need of repairs. In most cases, these dents can be repaired with a caulk or a putty knife and some spackle or joint compound. Whatever repairs are in order, they should be done a few days before your painting project begins, to ensure that everything is completely dry when it comes time to paint. —Prepare the area before you paint. Proper preparation is key

to ensure less frustration later on. First, remove draperies, pictures, switch and outlet cover plates from walls. Second, wipe off any dirt or dust from walls and baseboards with a damp cloth. If the area is highly contaminated, use a mild detergent. Lastly, tape off any woodwork, windows and trim. Using a strong, long-lasting painter’s tape can ensure your beautiful baseboards and your woodwork are protected, ultimately making them stand out. —Find the right finish for the job. Consider the amount of dirt and activity your walls will be exposed to before choosing your paint sheen. Flat or eggshell sheens should be used in lowtraffic areas, because they hold dirt and are more difficult to clean. Semi-gloss and gloss finishes are best suited for hightraffic or active areas, such as a child’s bedroom, because they can be easily washed without losing their luster. —Choose a durable paint. If you’re looking for a paint that can stand up to the daily wear and tear that happens on the inside and outside of a busy home, try Olympic Assure(TM) interior and exterior paint-andprimer in one. Available exclusively at U.S. Lowe’s locations, Olympic Assure offers an easyflow application and a highly durable finish, perfect for any project. With more than 1,200 available colors to choose from, backed by a lifetime warranty and available at an affordable price, Olympic Assure offers premium benefits without breaking the bank. —Work from the top down. If you’re painting a room, start with the ceiling first. If you’re painting another area or structure, begin with the highest point. —Use the proper brush or roller technique. When utilizing a brush for tight trim work, dip half the length of the bristles

into your paint, then gently tap the brush on the side of the can rather than wiping it across the lip. Be sure to hold the brush handle near the base to ensure maximum control, applying light pressure to the surface being painted. When using a roller on larger surfaces, slowly roll the brush into the paint tray, ensuring an even coat on all sides. Use the ridges in the upper portion of the tray to remove excess product, then paint the surface in a capital “M” motion. Continue this motion until the area is completely covered. —Keep your workspace ventilated. This season’s temperatures are perfect for a do-it-yourself (DIY) project so take advantage of it. If your project has you painting indoors, open the windows and allow a fresh breeze into your painting space while you work. And when the project is done and your paint has dried, keep the windows open for a few hours to ensure your new room

looks as great as it smells. If your project has you painting outside, make sure that the weather forecast is clear for a few days so that your newlypainted project has ample time to dry. “Painting can often feel intimidating, but with the right tools, advice and products, do-it-yourself painting projects don’t have to be complicated,” said Lia Gancas, senior manager - Olympic Paint, a brand of PPG Architectural Coatings. (BPT) — It’s not too late. You still have plenty of time to tackle that outdoor DIY project and, if you act fast, even enjoy it for a while before colder temperatures finally set in. Here are five projects you can get started on today: —Close the cracks. This is a wonderful time to seal cracks in your driveway before temperature fluctuations can make the damage any worse. Start by cleaning the area and then applying the proper sealer. The sealer you choose depends on the size of the cracks. You can use concrete patches or paints, caulk, grout or vinyl patches to seal smaller cracks while larger cracks commonly require a combination of cement and grout. Apply the sealing solution to the crack and then let it dry before smoothing it over. —Do that deck. Adding a deck to your home has been on your DIY wish list for a while and now’s the time. Treated lumber is perfect for any DIY deck project because it’s durable and is the most affordable option for decking. You can even use it to create railings, stairs and more. —Liven up the landscape. Up the curb appeal of your home by adding some new landscape work. Flower boxes or raised planter beds are a great way to introduce new flowers and create spots of color. You can also surround your bushes with new wood shavings or small rocks. And for a simple project that has a big impact, grab the edger and tidy up those boundaries, you’ll be amazed at the results. —Fortify the fence. Fencing your yard provides security and allows children or pets to play outside without you having to constantly watch them. However, if you find metal fences look too industrial, you’ll want to pursue wood fence options. —Fire up the fun. A backyard fire pit is a great place to congregate and one you’ll enjoy well into the colder season. Adding a fire pit to your home can be as simple or extravagant as you want it to be. If you’re looking for a quick addition, you can purchase a kit at your local home store. More durable, long lasting options will require you to dig a trench and lay gravel before applying pavers. The option you choose should depend on how much you plan to use the pit, the appearance you’re going for and the time/money you have to spend. Reinventing your outside space with a DIY project is easier than you think and there’s still plenty of time to do it.

How to conduct a DIY home energy audit

(StatePoint) — This fall, why not consider making needed improvements in your home to help increase energy efficiency and save big in the long run? Here is a short checklist for a DIY home energy audit.

Seal air leaks

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sealing air leaks around the house can save up to 30 percent of energy costs annually. To find leaks, conduct a thorough visual inspection for gaps and cracks by baseboards, where the walls and ceiling meet, around door frames, and near cable and phone line wall plates. Spot a gap? Caulk it. Use painter’s tape for a cleaner job. Hold the caulking gun at an angle for best results, and apply in a continuous stream. Improve insulation around windows and doors with weather-stripping. Measure the gap you need to fill to identify the width of weather-stripping needed and determine whether you should apply it from the inside or outside. Before starting, read the package instructions to ensure you’re using the right materials. Cut to size and install. Lastly, check if your fireplace flue is open. If so, close it when not in use for additional savings.

Make smart upgrades

One quick way to check your windows for inefficiencies is to look for condensation, frost and other moisture. The Department of Energy also recommends closing your windows on a dollar bill. If you can easily pull the bill out, the window might be losing substantial energy and may require repair or replacement. Additionally, ENERGY STAR reports that homeowners who choose windows

that have earned the ENERGY STAR save an average $101-$538 a year when replacing single-pane windows. If it’s time for an upgrade, look for ENERGY STAR qualified windows that offer innovative technologies and improve energy efficiency. Exterior remodeling companies like Window World, an ENERGY STAR partner, offer more high-performance options featuring technologies like a Warm-Edge Spacer System, which blocks escaping heat between glass layers. There are companies which sell windows made with high-performance Low Emissivity Glass, featuring a microscopic silver coating that actively blocks heat gain during the summer and heat loss during the winter. Look for replacement windows which contain argon gas between their glass layers. Because Argon is denser than air, it acts as an ideal insulator. For information about innovative and cost-saving energy efficiency options, visit WindowWorld.com.

Change behavior

Do an audit of not only your home’s features, but of the occupants as well. Are lights left on in empty rooms? Is the television on when no one is watching it? From switching to cold water laundry cycles to taking advantage of sunlight for warmth and light — modifications of energy and cost-saving resources don’t need to be a sacrifice. To save energy, improve the comfort of your home and do your part to be more environmentally conscientious, conduct a do-it-yourself energy audit. You’ll likely discover many areas in your home that should be improved.

StatePoint

Check out color wheel when looking to paint a home (StatePoint) — Color is a fundamental component of curb appeal and can make your home either stand out from the pack or blend in nicely with its environment. But you’re not alone if you’re unsure how to incorporate color to make your home look its best. “Many homeowners are afraid to add color to their home exteriors because they don’t want to make a mistake, says Kate Smith, president and chief color maven of Sensational Color. “No one should feel locked into blah or standard colors though. For the apprehensive and bold alike, Smith offers insights into adding eyepleasing color palettes to home exterior elements.

What to know before digging on your property

(StatePoint) — Whether you are a “do-it-yourselfer” or a professional excavator contracted for a project, it’s crucial to dig smart when landscaping or doing a home improvement project. There are more than 100 billion feet of underground utilities in the United States, equating to more than one football field’s length of buried utilities for every person in the country, according to the Common Ground Alliance, an organization dedicated to protecting underground utility lines and the safety of people who dig near them. An underground utility line is damaged once every six minutes because someone did not call before digging. Whether you’re planting a tree, installing a fence, deck, swimming pool, or starting any other excavation project, calling 811 is essential to have the approximate location of underground utilities and pipelines marked. Calling 811 is the law, and knowing where pipelines and

underground utility lines are buried before you dig will help protect you, and those around you, from injury. It also helps prevent damage to utilities, service disruptions, potential fines and repair costs. Every digging job requires a call -- even if you have called before for a similar project -- because the depth of utility lines varies, and there may be multiple lines in a common area. Digging without knowing the approximate location of underground utilities increases the likelihood of unintentional damage.

What to expect calling 811

Your call will be routed to a local call center. An operator will gather information about your digging plans and notify local pipeline and utility companies about your project. State laws vary regarding the amount of advance notice required to call and have lines marked. Most states require 48 to 72 hour advance notice (excluding weekends and holidays). An 811 representative in

your area can provide specific information, or you can learn more at www.Call811.com. Pipeline and utility representatives will be sent to mark the approximate location of underground utilities and cables using color-coded paint, flags or stakes so you know what’s below and are able to dig safely around them. If there are no underground utilities, pipelines or cables at your dig location, they will mark “clear.”

Planning a Digging Project

—Always call 811 before starting any digging project, regardless of the depth of your digging or your familiarity with the property. —Plan ahead and allow ample time for lines to be marked. After you have waited the required time for markings in your state, if lines have not been marked, call 811 again to check the status of your request before digging. —If a contractor has been hired, confirm that a call to 811 has been made. Don’t allow work

to begin until lines have been marked. —Consider moving the loca-

tion of your project if it is near line markings. Digging with care is critical

for safety, the safety of your community and the protection of the environment.

Top home improvements projects that help sell a home ers. “The difference in the light streaming in, and the overall impression of the home after a professional window cleaning, is amazing,” says Rik Nonelle, president of Window Genie, a well-known window cleaning and window tinting franchise. Reaching those upper level windows for a good exterior cleaning can be tricky and dangerous to DIY, however. For a more detailed and precise job, consider using a professional service; it’s an affordable way to give your home a facelift.

(StatePoint) — While certain home upgrades provide obvious aesthetic enhancements, it’s important to ensure the projects are worth the expense. The following three home improvements provide especially impressive returns on their respective investments, making them excellent choices to consider with an eye on selling your home.

Bath and kitchen

Bathroom and kitchen renovations are great bets, according to the National Association of Realtors. However, ripping out these rooms and building them completely anew is an extreme expense that might not give you an immediate investment return. Instead, check out refinishing services, whose work can provide more value than a full replacement. For example, Miracle Method takes ugly bathtubs, countertops, faucets and other fittings, and refurbishes them to look newly installed. This service will increase the useful life of those fixtures

by more than 15 years, at a fraction of the cost and time of a replacement. In fact, company president, Chuck Pistor, started out as a very satisfied customer of this franchise. When he realized how efficient and economical

the concept was for homeowners, he bought the company.

Wash windows

Newly washed windows can make a huge impression on potential homebuy-

New floors, particularly the latest in engineered flooring, are high in demand among potential home buyers. It’s no wonder; since engineered flooring is comprised of wood layers stacked crossgrain and bonded together under heat and pressure -- a process that makes them stain resistant and more durable where pets’ claws and children’s toys are

concerned “Today’s engineered floors have the beauty and durability of wood, and are available in every color and style you can walk upon,” said Tom Wood, president of the popular mobile franchise concept, Floor Coverings International. “Investing in new flooring can dramatically increase the resale value of your home.” With its mobile capability, a local franchisee of Floor Coverings International can bring up to 3000 samples right to your door, a great convenience when you are in the process of updating your home for sale. Neutral tones, such as pale gray or a dark walnut stain will make the home-selling process easier. Affordable home improvement franchises and cleaning services that offer great value abound. For those planning to sell their homes in the near future, considering each project’s return on investment is important when choosing which home upgrades to make.
