Jacobson hands over reins of volunteers By CORTNEY OFSTAD

IRONWOOD — The leadership has changed for the Ironwood Volunteer Fire Department. After 22 years as fire chief, Ken Jacobson has stepped down, and Bob Brentar is taking over. During a department meeting a few months ago, Jacobson nominated Brentar during the elections. According to Brentar, it was something they had discussed in the past. "We had kind of talked about it, and he wanted to step back," Brentar said. "Ken's been with the department for a few years, and I think he is phasing himself out slowly. Once you start, it's in your blood and it's hard to walk away from." Jacobson has been a member of the department for 31 years and will still remain a member and emergency medical services officer. Despite his willingness to step down, Jacobson said he wasn't sure how it was going to feel not being the chief anymore. "It was kind of a relief," Jacobson said. "There is a lot involved with being chief. Sometimes it's hard not to stick my nose in places, but I defer to Bob." Jacobson said he will be there to help. "I told him when he started as my assistant chief last year that I would be more than happy to help him," Jacobson said. "My goal is just to stay out of his way and let him do his thing." The transition is also something many of the firemen have to deal with, according to Jacobson. "Many of them have only had me as their chief," Jacobson said. "We'll go to a fire and they'll ask me questions. I tell them to talk to the person in charge. Bob has done a good job so far and things are working out well." According to Brentar, the job is time consuming. "There is just more responsibility," Brentar said. "It's a job like any other, but it's rewarding in its own aspect. I just have to be there to make the

As for Jacobson, he knows things are in good hands.
"Bob's got a lot of experience, and he is going to be good at this," Jacobson said. "I think this was a good time for a change, and he is going to do great." The volunteer fire department
