Welcome to Winter Wonderland he Gogebic Range is full of natural beauty all year around, but its deep snow winters remain the most popular time of the year for visitors. Snowmobilers, downhill skiers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers find a myriad of winter playland opportunities. More than 400 miles of constantly groomed snowmobile trails, an array of alpine ski resorts, many kilometers of groomed Nordic ski trails and an abundance of wilderness to snowshoe through await outdoor enthusiasts. A long weekend of fun in the snow won’t be enough for any family — plan a week on the Gogebic Range and visit the many shops and restaurants that dot the main streets of Ironwood, Hurley, Bessemer, Wakefield and surrounding towns. Take in a rare treat at one of Ironwood’s live theaters — many shows are performed by local talent. Discover the area’s rich history and how it turned from rugged wilderness where immigrant miners and loggers carved out a life in bustling communities in the 1880s, to the quaint smalltown America it has become by touring one or all of the

local history museums. The Iron County Historical Society’s Museum is open ‘yearround in Hurley and downtown Ironwood features a museum in Depot Park. Skiers can try one hill after another or choose the one that suits them best, including the college-run Mt. Zion on the campus of Gogebic Community College, Big Powderhorn Mountain, Indianhead, Blackjack, Whitecap or the Porcupine Mountains. Bundle up and go inside to the Pat O’Donnell Civic Center, also on the college campus. The civic center has open ice-skating hours throughout the winter. A snack bar is available. While on the GCC campus, try snow tubing down Mt. Zion. There are lodging options for any budget or taste and eateries found nowhere else. Seeing and experiencing the Gogebic Range covered with snow is proof that family vacations don’t require beaches and warm temperatures. With a concentration on the beginner experience, the resort boasts one of the best beginner areas in the Midwest. There are lessons available for all ages. Also offering the snowmobile trails that run through both resorts. The machines can be rented at Blackjack. Returning guests will find more tree skiing runs for advanced skiers. A shuttle every half hour offers a seven minute ride between the hills. Blackjack offers a yeti cave snow fort for kids and a 30-foot tubing area and snow slides. A huge New Year’s Eve party complete with fireworks is planned for Blackjack. The evening will also include a buffet dinner, as well as kids events, teen dance and adult party with live music from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Indianhead has a swimming pool, hot tub and sauna, while Blackjack hosts indoor trampoline bungee and group bonfires upon request. Big Powderhorn Mountain
he slopes of Big Powderhorn Mountain near Bessemer offer skiers and snowboarders an average 100-day ski season that can run longer when snow arrives early and stays later. Big Powderhorn Mountain has been in operation since the 1963-64 winter season. The resort village offers 253 skiable acres — the most in Big Snow Country — with 45 trails and two terrain parks. The longest trail run is a full mile. The main lodge is located right next to three ski lifts, with the beginners area right at the base. To access the runs there are nine double chairlifts and a beginner handle tow. Trails, by percentage, are rated 35 percent novice, 35 more difficult and 30 percent most difficult. ter a certain technique or just wanting to enjoy the hill more. An introductory package includes lessons, rentals and lift tickets. Lessons can span from an hour to more than two hours. Locally owned and managed, Big Powderhorn is a favorite of the locals. It’s also a visitor favorite with lodging, condominiums and houses surrounding the hill that are capable of accommodating up to 2,000 people. Group lodging options are also possible from a fullsized chalet to well-equipped condos through Powderhorn Mountain Resort Lodging. Big Powderhorn Mountain can make snow over 93% of the terrain. The resort boasts a state-of-the-art grooming department and provides a professional ski patrol. The village maintains a festival feel with other attractions including a lighted, outdoor ice rink. There is a torch-light parade and fireworks over the mountain on New Year’s Eve. Whitecap Mountains
hitecap Mountain Ski Resort is a 400-acre four-season operation in Upson, Wis., that includes 43 ski runs spread over three mountains that are part of the Penokee Mountain Range. Whitecap enjoys an average of 200 inches of snow every winter and boasts more powder days than any resort in Wisconsin. When Mother Nature tires of making snow, resort staff create their own white stuff nightly, as needed. Ski and snowboard runs include everything from double black diamond expert trails to a bunny hill for kids in an area separated from wind and more experienced skiers. Five chairlifts are available for adults, and a tow rope is available for kids. In addition, members of the National Ski Patrol help to keep the hills safe with regular rounds. Whitecap management hopes to create cross-country trails within the resort in the future, but for now, cross-country

skiing and snowshoeing are available on the nearby Uller Trail, which is not part of the resort. Snowmobilers using Iron County trails are also welcome to stay and play at the resort. All sports enthusiasts are welcome to take refuge from Jack Frost at the re-
sort’s Wine Hut, which offers a wood stove, as well as food and beverages. Located between the Midway and North Pole lift stations, the Wine Hut is a historic gathering spot for skiers and snowContinued on page 15

boarders alike. Complimentary shuttle service is provided from the hotel to the hut for guests not on skis. Housing at Whitecap Resort can accommodate about 400 guests. Trailside condominiums with skiin and ski-out lodging are among the options. The resort hotel includes a bar, restaurant, pool and hot tub, and the separate Davis Chalet can hold groups of up to 40 guests. The resort will feature its first annual Glades of Glory race on Feb. 14. Described as “a head-tohead, single-elimination glade race,” the event is open only to invited participants with appropriate expertise. Spectators, however, are welcome. The race will be in the “Gouge,” which is located across from the Wine Hut. Additional events also occur throughout the year. The resort, which includes the Skye Golf Course, sits on Weber Lake, where guests can enjoy boating and fishing in warmer months. Across the lake is Weber Lake Park, run by the Iron County Forestry and Parks Department. Located on the western end of the Lake Superior Snowbelt, Whitecap is about 10 miles southwest of Hurley, off Wisconsin 77 on County E. Mt. Zion Ski Area
Gogebic Community College
t. Zion Ski Area has tentatively schedule its Opening Day for the 2020-21 season for Dec. 19. Located just on the edge of Ironwood on the campus of Gogebic Community College, Mt. Zion Ski Area is known as the fun hill for all ages and the place where most local residents learned to ski. As the oldest winter recreation complex in Big Snow Country dating back to 1937, there were multiple owners of the Mt. Zion Ski Area until Gogebic Community College took over operations in 1968. The ski hill is now a working laboratory for college students enrolled in the ski area management program — one of few such programs in the entire nation. The students run everything from ski instruction to lift operations to the rental shop, gaining valuable skills and insight for future employment in the winter sports field. Mt. Zion has expanded hours during the Christmas break, except on Christmas, when it is closed. The facility offers reasonable season passes for individuals and families. A tubing hill is also offered along side the ski hill. Entrants into the tubing park are issued a tube and ride to the top via tow rope. Mt. Zion has expanded its snowmaking capability in recent years. In the past snow was not made all the way to the top of the hill, but the snowmaking program has expanded to cover the entire slope to enhance the skiing experience. Ski lessons are a very big part of Mt. Zion Ski Area. Students and other members of the community take advantage of the ski hill’s nearby location and affordable lessons to and bring as many as 8,000 students annually.

Ski racing has been a popular program on Mt. Zion for 30 years, especially with young skiers. The races begin each Saturday morning starting in January. The youth ski racing team called Team Z, offers youth a chance to learn competition skiing, slalom and giant slalom, in an affordable program that competes with other youth teams around the region. The Terrain Park is another popular feature. In year’s past a local competition for tricks done on the box and rails has been held on Friday evenings. In addition to group rates, GCC students are allowed to ski or snowboard for free, as are senior citizens 62 years and older. The skill hill offers complete equipment rental and has a chalet and food service. Students in the SAM program run the facility, learning snowmaking and grooming as part of maintaining the hill. The SAM program also manages the ski hill at the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The SAM program provides technical and academic study, as well as internships at major ski resorts in the Midwest and others throughout the country. SAM students earn credits through onsite training classes such as ski area layout, snowmaking fundamentals, emergency response, slope grooming and classroom courses, such as business. Graduates of the SAM program may choose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in ski area business management through an agreement with Northern Michigan University in Marquette. Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing Gogebic County
Miners Memorial Heritage Park The Miners Memorial Heritage Park offers quick and easy access to crosscountry skiing and snowshoe trails in the center of Ironwood. The main trail entry is located at the Ironwood K-12 School’s baseball field at 775 E. Ayer St. Skiers can choose from two connected skiing loops for a quick ski on one of the loops or a combined 2.6mile (4.3K) trail at any time of day or night. Headlamps are recommended for night skiing. The Red Devil and Pabst Blue Ribbon Snowshoe Trails cover 2.8 miles (4.5K). The park includes former iron ore mining sites. Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails in Ironwood offers 24K of ski trails, including several loops, for classic striding and skate skiing. There are 14K of marked snowshoe trails and 7K of snow bike trails.

Lake-effect snow provides the area with snow that tends to arrive earlier, pile deeper, and last longer than anywhere else in the Midwest. The rolling terrain offers trails for all levels of skiing, snowshoeing and snow biking. Ski and snowshoe trails can be accessed at the chalet trailhead at E5851 Sunset Road. There is also a trailhead behind Aspirus Ironwood Hospital. The Snow Summit Road trailhead provides access to snow bike trails, as well as ski and snowshoe trails. The warming chalet offers a view of the historic wooden ski jump structure that was part of the club’s original activities. Wolverine will abide by Michigan State COVID-19 protocol when the warming chalet is open. Wolverine Nordic Ski Club volunteers maintain and groom the trail system. This nonprofit group promotes Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking and lifelong physical fitness. The club also supports youth ski and other programs in area schools and community organizations. Due to the pandemic and the social nature of fundraising events, Wolverine has cancelled the USSSA-sanc-
tioned Aspirus Yooperbeiner Snowshoe Race-Walk and the Mountains of the Midwest Winter Triathlon for this season. Donations and membership fees help to maintain and groom trails, to service equipment and facilities, and to provide operating funds. ABR Trails Active Backwoods Retreats Trails are located in Erwin Township south of Ironwood at E5299 W. Pioneer Road. Operated by Eric Anderson and Angela Santini, ABR offers 78K of trails groomed for classic and skating styles. The trails run through woods and along the Montreal River in the area of Ironwood’s Norrie Park. Dogs are welcome on dog trails, which are designated on ABR’s map. ranging from rustic cabins to luxury houses. The trails open at 9 a.m. seven days a week during the ski season. Trails close between 4 to 6 p.m., depending upon when it gets dark. Due to COVID-19 protocols, visitors will be welcome to buy tickets from the driveway ticket booth on busy days or from a walk-up window at the chalet. Ski equipment can be rented or purchased at ABR’s ski shop, which will require masks and social distancing. The chalet’s back room and indoor restroom will not be open. Concessions will not be available. The chalet also will not offer bag storage or warming or change areas. The wax barn will be closed. An outdoor water faucet will be available to fill water bottles, but day skiers and campers must bring their own bottles. A small, unheated building to the south will offer two open changing areas — one for men and one for women. An unheated warehouse will offer six portable potties, including two larger units for persons with disabilities. Three warming cabins along the trail will be open for emergency use. ABR Trails typically is part of the annual Sisu Ski Fest. However, due to the pandemic, this year’s Sisu event will be virtual. Iron Belle Trail The continued growth of the Iron Belle Trail gives winter silent sport enthusiasts one more option when exploring the western Upper Peninsula. So far, the trail runs more than nine miles from the Montreal River, bordering Hurley and Ironwood, to Ramsay Road in Ramsay. Open to snowshoeing and backcountry cross-country skiing, this trail will be difficult for traditional crossPage 20 – Winter Fun & Dining Guide
country skiers due to much of it being ungroomed. The trail, which follows the old Soo Line Railroad right-of-way, runs mostly through wooded areas, but it crosses numerous intersections that offer multiple access points, so as to tailor the length of the excursion. The trail experience is enhanced by crossings over historic, old railroad bridges. The Depot Park Trailhead is at 150 N. Lowell St. in downtown Ironwood. The Moore Street Trailhead is just south of the stop light on U.S. 2 in Bessemer, and the Ramsay Trailhead is across Ramsay Road from Memorial Park and the Keystone Bridge. A volunteer groomer does plan to groom the section from Bessemer to approxiamately County Club Road. This section has been described as a flat tract that will be ideal for entrylevel cross-country skiers. It also should be good for experts who wish to practice their double-poling technique on a flat, fast course. Sometimes referred to locally as the Western Gateway Trail, it is the western end of a more grandly schemed Iron Belle Trail, which promoters hope eventually will link Ironwood to Belle Isle Park in Detroit. Friends of the Iron Belle Trail, composed of local trail enthusiasts, help to
maintain the trail and also coordinate occasional trail activities. They also have a Facebook page. The trail is the part of what organizers hope becomes a regional trail system that is planned to run between ski trails in Montreal, Wis., and Sunday Lake in Wakefield, with spurs connecting to other trails and points of interest locally and in northern Wisconsin.
Wakefield Trails The Split Rock Trails Association has a trail system available for snowshoeing in Wakefield. Depending on volunteer help, the trails are tracked, but not formally groomed. For this year’s trail access point, call the city of Wakefield at 906-229-5131. Although there are no groomed trails at the city’s Eddy Park, on Sunday Lake, some local residents also snowshoe in that area.

skiing trails groomed regularly for classic and freestyle techniques. Terrain is suitable for those of all abilities. The trails include three miles of looped, ungroomed snowshoe trails through forest and wetlands. New this year is the two-mile Mercer Springs Trail, which connects with the one-mile Klondike Trail. The MECCA Cabin Trailhead, at 4686N Fierick Road, is a full log chalet built by club members. It includes a wood stove, along with benches, tables, wax bench, changing room and vault toilets. The chalet is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the ski season. The separate Little Turtle Flowage trailhead, off Joe’s Shack Road, has access to a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources parking lot in the Little Turtle Wildlife Area. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, policies will include social distancing, wearing a mask or face covering in the chalet, and limiting occupancy to six people at a time. No coffee or hot chocolate will be offered. The vault toilet will be cleaned once daily. Policies will be updated and posted in the chalet and at meccatrails.com. The virtual MECCA Trails Winterfest will offer three skiing races and the Mercer Springs Snowshoe Tour from Dec. 19 to Feb. 21. The races will include the Flowage 15K Freestyle, the Turtle River Pursuit (two 11K legs), and the Claire de Loon 5K. The annual MECCA Candlelight Ski, Shoe, Hike event is under consideration. Watch the website for more information. Dogs are allowed on trails as long as they are accompanied by well-behaved companions trained to pick up after them. MECCA trails are on 500 acres owned by the town of Mercer, Iron County Forestry and Parks, the state of Wisconsin, and private land owners. The DNR manages the state land. MECCA is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that is community-focused and volunteer-driven. MECCA Experience is a community outreach program that funds trail experiences for students, families and seniors.

Uller Trail Uller Trail runs through the Penokee Range in northern Iron County and is billed as the most isolated ski trail in Wisconsin. Skiing with a companion is recommended along this 19K trail system described as “hilly and remote.” There is a trailhead and parking area in Upson at Weber Lake at the base of Whitecap Mountains downhill ski resort, just off County E. Heading east from that trailhead are a series of three loops. These loops, constructed in 2017 and 2018, provide 6.8K of groomed trails in the beautiful Penokee Range. A log cabin warming house was added to this part of the Uller trail in 2019. True back-country skiing is available, extending east from the loops. The main stem of the Uller trail runs west to east, terminating at the Hoyt Road Trailhead, located north of Wisconsin 77, between Pence and Iron Belt. The Krankkala Spur begins at the Lagoon Trailhead, located just north of Iron Belt, and runs north 3.5K to the main stem. Snowshoers are welcome on the Uller, but are asked to respect the set track by staying to the sides of the trail. Maintenance and grooming are done by the Iron County Forestry Department and the Penokee Rangers, a volunteer organization. Donations are accepted for trail upkeep. Montreal Nordic Ski Trails Montreal Nordic Ski Trails, in the former mining company town of Montreal, range from easy to quite difficult. Interpretive signs along the trail explain many mining infrastructure developments that still exist. Trails will be extensively groomed during the 2020-21 season to provide quality winter outdoor recreation opportunities. Easiest access to this 15K trail system is from the old city hall parking lot on Wisconsin 77, along the west branch of the Montreal River. The Penokee Rangers groom these trails. Snowmobiling he Gogebic Range Trail Authority has grown to manage more than 95 miles of groomed county snowmobile trails since forming in 1973. Gogebic County, together with the western Upper Peninsula and northeast Wisconsin offer some of the most scenic and well maintained snowmobiling trails around. Riders can enjoy hundreds of miles of groomed and rustic trails in thick woods, frozen lakes and streams and wide open vistas in one of the snowiest areas in the country. The Trail Authority is monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic closely and will be hosting fundraisers throughout the year in support of it’s all-volunteer labor force. The organization now boasts a fleet of three trail groomers

with the addition of a 2009 CNH T6080 to help keep the trails in even better condition this season. The trail authority celebrated a record year as the volunteer operators groomed 11,000 miles during the 2019-20 season. This included three weeks when the operators were limited to one groomer because of mechanical issues to exemplify the passion that the volunteers have in their work. The addition of the third groomer will allow for the other groomers to be refurbished. The upgrades will help the crew maintenance go further in preventing breakdowns during the season. GRTA Trails Trail 160 has had $30,000 worth of
Gogebic County dirt work since the fall of 2017 and is bar-none the most scenic trail around. This trail winds through the rugged country of beautiful north Ironwood out to the Gogebic County Forest's Powers Road Recreational Area. From there it winds through steep high country, offering incredible views of Lake Superior as well as the southern-facing Bald Mountain where you can see all the way back to Bessemer ski hills and Mount Zion of Ironwood. The trail begins its descent down to Lake Superior at the Montreal Gorge, a 200-foot deep gorge with the Montreal River oxbow below, separating Michigan and Wisconsin. Iron County, Wisconsin. Also at the end of trail 160 is Superior Falls, a massive waterfalls complex dumping into Lake Superior. This is truly a must-visit site when riding the furthest western snowmobile trail the state of Michigan has to offer. Continued brushing and widening of the trail over the summer of 2020 will provide Trail 160 riders one of the best rides in the state. The club reminds riders that Trail 160 involves over 25 land owners. It is critical for riders to stay on the trail as trespassing or damage off of the trail could result in a complete closure of the trail. Trail 11S, which runs from east of Wakefield to Winchester, Wisconsin, also has been rerouted for the new season. A one-year agreement with the Ottawa National Forest allowed the trail to open last year if the trail authority agreed to identify another route for the 2018-2019 season. The Keweenaw Land Association has since approved a 10-mile reroute, which added four miles of trail onto its Page 26 – Winter Fun & Dining Guide
managed property. This new trail is the “historic route� of Trail 11S and will be a winding, gorgeous ride this winter. This is a 17-mile run without a single stop sign, offering a true wilderness ride. Trail 2 benefited, since last season, in a variety of ways. The trail section by the Ironwood Transfer Station was rebuilt and raised, with an added culvert to promote drainage. The trail authority also did some straightening and drainage of another trail section through the Big Snow Resorts. Finally, the group also is working to reroute the snowmobile Trail 2 crossing from Verona Road on the east side of the Keystone Bridge in Ramsay to another, less busy location. Trail 8 will once again begin just east of Wakefield and heads northeast toward Bergland. This trail is on a seasonal county road that is closed to vehicle traffic in the winter. This makes for a superb rider experience. In late 2019 the trail had two culvert extensions to keep traffic further from the road to provide a safer and more enjoyable experience.
Lake Gogebic Trails Shared by Gogebic and Ontonagon counties, Lake Gogebic offers a wealth of snowmobiling trails in the lake region. The Bergland-based Lake Gogebic Area Groomers maintain over 50 miles of groomed trails here. For general information, check gogebicareagrooming.com. Watersmeet The Watersmeet-based Thunder Riders Snowmobile Club works to provide groomed snowmobile trails on national, state and private forest land in that area. Sometimes referred to as the Watersmeet Thunder Riders, the club warns that, although snowmobiles are allowed to operate on roads within the Ottawa National Forest, there are restrictions for off-trail riding. Snowmobiling nowmobiling has been a growing sport in Ontonagon, and, depending on how much snow and where it falls can be a boon to the local economy. From the north end of the county near Lake Superior to trails around Lake Gogebic on the south end of the county, snowmobilers are able to access some of the most beautiful parts of the state deep in the northwoods, as well as many businesses catering to their needs. There are several restaurants, lodging options and other businesses keyed up for snowmobilers around Lake Gogebic. The North Country Snowmobile Club is vital to keeping snowmobiling viable through part of the county. The group grooms 109 miles of trails that range from two-thirds down the South Boundary Road up the Lake of the Clouds, to Ontonagon, from White Pine, into Greenland and Rockland. Snowmobilers depend on groomed trails and the economy depends on snowmobilers, according to NCSC president Mack McCaughn. Groomer drivers often spend as much as 12 hours a day or night making the trails good for people in and outside the area. He hopes others will join the grooming corps, adding the club is flexible as to how many hours and in what areas drivers would like to operate. He said that any-

one interested in helping with the grooming will be trained on the machine if necessary. “With more groomers we could groom more trails and that would be a plus for visitors as well as locals,” he added. The group also spends time brushing trails during the off season. “We need snow, groomers and supporters so we can welcome in the right way the thousands of winter visitors who select the area to visit this winter,” McCaughn said.

Snowmobiling
ith Hurley and Mercer serving as hubs, Iron County offers more than 500 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Annual snowfall often exceeds 200 inches. The county serves as a snowmobiling center with trails connecting to Vilas, Price and Ashland counties in Wisconsin and to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. With plenty of lodging and snowmobile rentals, the county comes alive with sleds during snowy winter weekends. Snow-blanketed forests filled with the sights and sounds of the Wisconsin Northwoods are what attract many snowmobilers to Iron County. The scenic trails here are groomed by the Iron County Forestry & Parks Department, along with the White Thunder Riders and the Mercer SnoGoers. The Thunder Riders, who are known for their charitable donations, list regular events at whitethunderriders.com.

The Mercer Sno-Goers also host numerous events listed at mercersnogoers.com. One of the most anticipated is the club’s Winter Blast, which will be on Jan. 16, 2021, at its Mercer Snowmobile Barn.
Iron County Snowmobiling Trails From the Iron Horse Trail in Hurley, the ride to Saxon and Gurney covers 12 miles, with places to stop for gas, food and refreshments along the way. A ride on Trail 3 to Saxon Harbor, with its spectacular view of Lake Superior, is a pleasant diversion for the avid snowmobiler. A journey on Trail 17 guides riders south of Hurley along the Michigan border past beautiful Pine Lake. The trail crosses many rivers and creeks, offering excellent viewing of wildlife and the natural splendor common to Iron County. Heading farther south, the same trail leads to Mercer, the Loon Capital of the World and a bustling
small town eager to welcome riders. Trail 77 takes a southwestern course through the rich, historic mining towns of Montreal, Pence and Iron Belt, with a unique opportunity to view the Plummer Mine headframe, the only remaining such structure in Wisconsin. From there, a choice trail of interest is Corridor 8, which travels west of Mercer, past the Lake of the Falls scenic area and the Turtle Flambeau Flowage. This trail meanders through beautifully wooded, well-groomed trails. Also in southern Iron County, Springstead, on Trail 182, welcomes riders to enjoy well-marked trails that wander through dense, snow-covered forests for a unique winter experience. Ice Fishing he Ottawa National Forest has more than 500 named lakes to ice fish. Ice fishing on lakes within the Ottawa is permitted, except on Slyvania Wilderness special provision lakes. Very few roads which lead to lakes on the forest are plowed, however, during the winter. Anglers need to be familiar with all rules and regulations related to fees, seasons, species and licensing by obtaining a Michigan fishing guide. Snowmobilers must be in accordance with the motor vehicle rules of the forest. Generally, spring (May-June) is the best time for lake fishing on the Ottawa; summer (July-August) is somewhat slower, with fall (September-October) somewhere in between. Stream fishing for lake-run salmon and steelhead usually picks up around April 1 with streams with an extended troutsalmon season, such as on the East Branch of the Ontonagon River, north of M-28, or those with no closed season. The best fishing on those streams starts around mid-September and lasts until the snow flies. Stream fishing for resident trout is generally best near the end of the legal season, especially for brook trout, which start upstream migration around this time. Walleyes and crappies tend to bite best under low light conditions (early morning, late evenings and overcast days). Fish for bass, crappies, pike and panfish near logs, brush or in weedy areas. In bright sunlight, and after storms or cold snaps, most fish tend to go deeper and are harder to get to bite. Use live bait, and fish deeper and slower under those conditions. There are a range of ice fishing tournaments throughout the Western Upper Peninsula, including the annual Sunday Lake ice fishing tournament planned for Feb. 13 during Michigan's free fishing weekend.

Mercer In 2021, two ice fishing tournaments in January and February are expected to draw people from all over the region. The Mercer Lions Club Ice Fishing Jamboree at Mercer's Carow Park is always a popular event, with this season's date still needing to be announced. The Turtle Flambeau Flowage Ice Fishing Jamboree, formerly known as the Claus Kraetke Memorial Ice Fishing Jamboree, is tentatively scheduled to be held on Feb. 27 at Donner's Bay Resort. Jack Frost Festival he Jack Frost Festival in Ironwood is a collection of events that celebrate the unique winter season of the wester Upper Peninsula including everything from holiday cheer to parades, to the outdoor fun of skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Planning for the 2020-21 will mean that some annual activities are canceled and those that go forward will be modified under pandemic guidelines to protect the community from the spread of COVID-19. The Ironwood Area Chamber of Commerce said that although details can change as the winter moves on and to check for updates at ironwoodchamer.org and the chamber’s Facebook page. The chamber’s annual tree lighting at the Depot Park in Ironwood at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. The event will include holiday music from Luther L.Wright High School choir members. Continuing the holiday lighting theme, a “Merry and Bright” exhibition of holiday artwork will run from mid-November through Jan. 17, 2021, in the Downtown Art Place Theatre Concourse. Frost Friday — the city's First Friday promotion for December on Dec. 4 — will include an outdoor craft market at the Historic Ironwood Depot Pavilion. Other possibilities include traveling holiday caroling groups and music at Historic Ironwood Theatre with restrictions on seating. The annual Jack Frost Festival of Lights parade will go ahead on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m., provided that at least 20 parade participants registered. The parade route may be altered to follow pandemic guidelines. Parade day events that are confirmed include the Santa Dash from the Ironwood Carnegie Library to the end of the parade route at 5:45 p.m. Participants pay a small fee to wear a paper santa costume and fake beard to join the run. A holiday craft market is planned from noon to 4 p.m. at the depot on parade day. The Historic Ironwood Theatre is exploring the possibility of a holiday film screening or performances. The traditional Santa and Mrs. Claus children’s event will not be held downtown as usual. Work is underway for an alternative event but details are forthcoming. The Jack Frost $10,000 raffle drawing will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 5. Contact the chamber for raffle tickets while they are still available. The Ironwood Area Business Professional Women's Club is going ahead with its annual 50/50 raffle. Tickets will be available at area businesses. The chamber is also planning annual business window decorating and home lighting contests in December. More information on registration and prizes will be available closer to the event. pen. The setup will hosted in the store windows of downtown businesses on Thursday, Dec. 3. Aspirus Hospital will hold its “Tree of Love” ceremony, but the date has not been chosen as of yet. The event, usually held in mid-December, will not include an indoor social with refreshments because of the pandemic. The Sisu Nordic Ski Festival will not occur as a one-day event this year. Instead, organizers have created a virtual event for skiers to participate on their own and report times from their home ski courses or by traveling to Ironwood and skiing one of the local courses here. Mt. Zion Ski Hill so far plans to hold its annual Fire on the Hill snowcross racing event. The Norrie Club plans to host its annual “Light Up The Night” Christmas tree burning event on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021. A pair of snowman building contests are in the works, but no details have been announced yet.
As of press time there was no word yet on whether the area’s two premier snowmobile ice racing events have been canceled or going forward. The Pro-vintage and Snowmobile Olympus events would occur sometime in January at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds' half-mile ice racing oval. Snowmobile Olympus
he Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus will host two actionpacked weekends of racing at the legendary half-mile oval ice track at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds this winter. First, they will host the Pro Vintage Racing on Saturday, Dec. 26. If there is bad weather, the event would be held the next day. On the weekend of Jan. 2-3, 2021, Ironwood will host USSA ProStar Cup racing. According to organizers, the fastest sleds on ice with speeds in excess of 100 mph take part in these races. Racing on Ironwood’s half-mile ice oval dates back to 1968 when factory teams from various snowmobile manufacturers battled for supremacy. In 1975, T.J. Patrick, a talented Junior class driver from Illinois, won the first Governor’s Cup — the event’s top prize awarded every year. Ironwood’s event was named the TLR Cup “Race of the Year” for 2014-2015 and 2017-2018 seasons. Pro Vintage Racing began in 1995 as organizers looked to create an event to let racers and fans alike “step back in time” and reminisce as they rev up their favorite racing machines of the past for more racing on the ice oval. ronwood's Sisu Ski Fest is going virtual in 2021 because of concerns related to the coronavirus. There are three race options to choose from, the 30-kilometer Sisu, 15K Heikki Lunta and 5K Hauska Hiihto Fun Ski. Plenty of winter fun in Mercer Mercer Chamber of Commerce
s the “Loon Capital of the World,” Mercer is no stranger to tourists. But even though the town’s thousands of loons spend the chilliest months in tropical sites, the town they leave behind still harbors plenty of other visitors and activities. Starting off this year’s holiday season will be the Dec. 4 wreathing of the town’s Claire de Loon statue, next to the Mercer Chamber of Commerce site. A Christmas tree also will be lit at that location. On Dec. 5, Mercer’s Candy Cane Christmas Celebration will consist of several activities in the afternoon and early evening. A Candy Cane parade will move down the main street, followed by a baking contest, a toy and food drive, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Mercer Community Center. A Candy Cane Court from Mercer School will preside over the entire event, which will include warm beverages and other refreshments. Mercer features about 105 lakes and a large portion of

the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. These bodies of water provide great opportunities for year-round fishing and related tournaments. On Feb. 27, the Claus Kraetke Memorial Ice Fishing Jamboree will be held at Donner’s Bay Resort on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cash prizes will be given for the largest fish in several categories. Raffles and hot food, along with beverages, will complete the day. Due to COVID-19, however, the fate of this season’s other fishing tournaments is uncertain, so watch the chamber website and area news reports for announcements. Winter skating occurs on Margaret Street between the Mercer School and the Mercer Public Library. A warming hut provides breaks from chilly temperatures. Pat Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Donnell Civic Center
he new Patrick O'Donnell Civic Center facility is expected to be ready for use in late fall or winter 2020-21. When construction is complete the facility will again be available for public skating, hockey and figure skating clubs in addition to serving as a multipurpose venue. The civic center remains at its original location adjacent to Gogebic Community College at E4972 Jackson Road in Ironwood. The original facility sustained severe structural damage from a roof collapse as a result of record setting snowfall in February 2019. The city's insurance provider removed the roof and walls to build a

temporary inflatable dome over the facility to allow for winter ice activities of the 2019-20 season. The dome came down in the spring and work on the new structure continued through the summer and fall. Although no opening date has been set the facility is expected to be ready for use later in the winter season. The civic center is home to the Ice Crystals Figure Skating Club which holds annual performances and events. The Polar Bear youth hockey program holds practices, regular season games and tournaments at the facility. The rink will also have open skating hours and skate rentals for the general public. The rink will have updated dasher
boards and LED lighting for a more evenly lit surface. The players will also enjoy the new benches and changing rooms. The facility will have a new forced air heating and ventilation system to make a better experience for fans in a newly redesigned lobby and concession area. Windows were added that face the ski and tubing slopes of the nearby Mt. Zion Recreational Area. The new facility was designed to serve as an all-year venue. Lake Gogebic
s the largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Lake Gogebic provides plenty of fun year round. With more than 13,000 acres in both Gogebic and Ontonagon counties, the nearly 10-mile long lake offers ample opportunities for ice fishing of panfish and larger game fish. Surrounding the 36-mile shoreline are a variety of wildlife and the Ottawa National Forest. The northern half of the lake, in Ontonagon County, is on Eastern Time, whereas the southern half, in Gogebic County, is on Central Time. Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources will offer a free fishing weekend on Feb. 13 and 14. During that time, state parks and boating access sites will not require a recreation passport, and all fishing license fees will be waived. Other fishing regulations still will be in effect. The Lake Gogebic Chamber of Commerce, based in Bergland, hopes to announce at least one fishing tournament during the winter season. Watersmeet (where the waters meet) W
Watersmeet lives up to its name by offering 302 lakes and 241 miles of trout streams. According to the Watersmeet Chamber of Commerce, the Cisco Chain alone has 15 lakes. The Lac Vieux Desert Lake, shared by Wisconsin, also has 4,200 acres of boundary waters and welcomes both Michigan and Wisconsin fishing licenses. The origin of Watersmeet’s name, according to the chamber, comes from three rivers that flow from the region in different directions — the Ontonagon River flows north into Lake Superior, the Wisconsin River flows south into the Mississippi River, and the Paint River flows east into Lake Michigan; hence, this is the place “where the wa-
ters meet.” All that water makes for a yearround fisherman’s paradise, with species including walleye, northern pike, cisco, trout, small- and largemouth bass, panfish (such as bluegill, perch and crappie), silver musky, and state- and world-record tiger musky. The region’s trees rival water in abundance. The Ottawa National Forest features about 1 million acres. As part of that forest, the Sylvania Wilderness Area is run by the U.S. Forest Service. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
he Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is a great place for winter visitors. Camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing can all be enjoyed at the park nestled on the shore of Lake Superior. Guided snow shoe hikes are one of the more poplar events facilitated by park staff. It’s a chance for visitors to see some of the beautiful winter wilderness that is the Porkies. In January and February, the park hosts a lantern-lit

snowshoe hike. It’s about one mile with a stop for hot cider about halfway. The annual Snow Burst festival will be held at the ski hill with the help of the Gogebic Community College ski area management program students who run the ski hill operation and the Friends of the Porkies. The skill hill is generally open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. The ski hill offers ski, snowshoe and snowboard rentals. The chalet also offers food and refreshments.
