Bessemer 4th of July
The annual Bessemer Blast is billed as “the U.P.’s biggest and best” 4th of July celebration, and organizers are planning its triumphant return this summer, after having to cancel last year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The week-long celebration will kick off with the lighting of the Tree of Honor on June 30. The week will feature many well established events including 3-on-3 basketball tournament on July 2, the Page 6 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
Hometown Run/Walk and Tot Trot on July 3. Many other familiar events were still being planned for the week as of press time, including a polka dance, street dance, street bowling, a chalk drawing contest, water balloon toss and mud run. The 4th of July will be jam packed with activities and fun for all, including family games and races in the morning at Massie Field. The children’s parade
starts downtown at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Bessemer Volunteer Fire Department’s open house featuring free hot dogs and soda. The evening parade kicks off at 7. Afterwards, attention moves to Massie Field for the “Thunder on the Mountain” fireworks display. 50/50 raffle tickets will be sold throughout the week, with the winner announced at the end of the parade. Wakefield 4th of July
Wakefield is planning a full celebration for the Fourth of July. A town picnic on July 3 will start at 1 p.m. in Eddy Park next to Sunday Lake. Music, bingo, kiddy fun and other activities will be available. Attendees will be able to buy food and refreshments. At 10 p.m. that night, the “Lightning on the Lake” fireworks display will take place over Sunday Lake. On July 4, the children’s parade will begin at 1 p.m. from the main street fire hall and will end at U.S. 2. The general parade also will start at 1 p.m. from the corner of U.S. 2 and Putnam Avenue and will continue onto Sunday Lake Street. Just before the parades, the Vintage Warbirds are expected to fly overhead.

Additional events are pending decisions by various sponsoring groups. Those activities that traditionally occur on or before July 4 are the annual Matt Ahonen Memorial Softball Tournament, the Hometown Variety Show, a street dance with live music, a bean bag tournament by VFW Post 9084, children’s races, and a Sunday Lake Walk-Run. The open house normally held by Wakefield’s Michigan State Police Post 86 has been cancelled this year due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. July 4 organizers encourage local citizens and tourists to check local news reports and the city’s Facebook page for continuing updates as the holiday nears.

Ramsay 4th of July
The Bessemer Township-Ramsay Fourth of July celebration will take place on Friday, July 2, with the annual street dance and fireworks. The event will kick off at 6 p.m. with the annual street dance, behind the Fire Hall above the park along the Black
River with live music by Flashback. The annual fireworks display — Rumble over the River — is scheduled for dusk. Tickets for a 50/50 raffle will go on sale two weeks prior to the event. The drawing will be at 10 p.m.

Festival Ironwood
The 2021 Festival Ironwood is scheduled for July 14-17 at the Historic Depot Park between Lowell and Suffolk streets in downtown Ironwood. The four-day midsummer family-friendly event offers an annual art, craft, and trade show, food and games for kids of all ages including the “World's Largest Duck Pick.” The festival also features live music entertainment, a classic car show, a sand volleyball tournament, and a walk/run event. Hurley offers fun
Hurley offers a variety of summer fun to young and old, from organized events to self-guided adventures across the northern part of Iron County.
Memorial Day ATV/UTV Rally The motorized trails in Iron County are legendary and the summer trail riding season starts with the annual Memorial Day ATV/UTV Rally series of events from May 27-30. The rally returns with some changes for COVID-19 this year after the rally was canceled in 2020. The Poker Run starts things off at noon on Thursday, May 27. Riders can visit participating businesses offering weekend specials while out on their tours and check off their poker run sheets to try their luck at drawing the winning hand. The annual parade down Silver Street has been canceled due to continued social distancing concerns, but the annual mud pit will be held downtown. Several participating businesses are hosting other activities including music and vendors. Iron County has more than 300 miles of trails to enjoy. Start the day in Hurley and head west to the Plummer Mine Headframe. At 80 feet high, the last of the steel giants remains with an interpretive park that honors the Penokee Range iron miners and their families. Continue west through Iron Belt on Trail 77 that leads to Upson Falls, continue on to Trail 6 and catch a view of Whitecap Mountain and venture to one of the scenic vistas. Trail 6 eventually turns north toward Lake Superior via Saxon. The return trip to Hurley from Saxon Harbor offers the choice of heading south to the Island Lake area along Trail 9 or 11. Either way, the ride is enjoyable with miles of scenic wilderness to explore. A stop at the B47 Veterans Memorial is a must on the to-do list, as well as Spring Camp Falls. Iron County Heritage Festival The Iron County Heritage Festival will be held from July 31 through Aug. 15 at various locations across the county including the Heritage Days parade along Silver Street in downtown Hurley at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31. The parade will occur if the pandemic guidelines in July will allow the event to be held safely. The event annually coincides with a busy weekend at the Hurley School, as the Quarterback Club hosts a golf tournament on Friday, July 30, and the Hurley Education Foundation and Sports Hall of Fame host induction events Saturday before the parade. Several class reunions are also planned during this weekend.
Saturday Arts in Heritage Park Local artists will come together in downtown Hurley at the Heritage Park for a Saturday of unique shopping on June 19, July 17, Aug. 14 and Sept. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Heritage Park is located on the southwest corner of 4th Avenue and Silver Street. Festivale Italiano Hurley will celebrate its rich Italian heritage with food, vendor markets, kids games and live music from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4. The Festivale Italiano offers family fun events and activities with free administration. All events take place in downtown Hurley.

Iron County Fair
As the coronavirus pandemic continues, organizers of the Iron County Fair hope they won't have to cancel the event for the second year in a row Although a final decision on going forward with this year's event isn't expected until May, the plan is currently proceed with the event later this summer. This year’s fair is planned for Aug. 5 through Aug. 8 at the fairgrounds in Saxon. It will be the 93nd annual running of the county fair that offers activities ranging from carnival rides and a mud run to the popular pie action on Sunday afternoon. People who haven’t attended the fair Page 14 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
in recent years will be surprised to visit the updated buildings and improvements that have been made throughout the fairgrounds. The fair is part of the Iron County Heritage Festival, which packages many events under one umbrella in late July and August. It allows former residents to return home for a weekend of memories and catching up with their friends. Other popular fair features are an antique tractor show, an old-fashioned horse pulling contest, the Saturday livestock auction, plenty of 4-H horse shows and musical entertainment. At the youth livestock auction, Iron County
4-Hers display their market projects, including steers, hogs, lambs, chickens and turkeys. Fair-goers are encouraged to bid on the homegrown animals. The auction runs from 6-8 p.m. in the pen near the cattle barns. A fair board of dedicated volunteers meets on a monthly basis to set up entertainment for the fair and plan for the exhibits. To get to the fair from Ironwood and Hurley, take U.S. 2 west to Saxon, then turn left at either the County B intersection or the Wisconsin 122 intersection. Gogebic County Fair
The Gogebic County Fair is a highlight of summer and after being canceled for the pandemic in 2020 the event is currently being planned to occur from Aug. 12-15 at the county fairgrounds in Ironwood. The family-friendly fair offers four days of events and activities, a midway carnival with more than a dozen rides and plenty of game booths. Fairgoers may also enjoy horse drawn wagon rides, a cornhole tournament, pedal tractor pull, antique tractor show and vintage tractor parade. There is a pie baking contest and auction with youth and adult divisions. The annual Gogebic County 4-H Market Livestock Auction will be held behind the cattle pavilion at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14. The auction will include steers, hogs, lambs Page 16 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
and pens of turkeys and broilers. There is also the Youth Challenge on Friday, Aug. 13 where kids compete to win prize money for their clubs. Harness racing will feature trotters and pacers on a halfmile track on Friday Aug. 13 and Saturday, Aug. 14. The Lake States Mud Racers will be featured on Saturday Aug. 14. The high powered lawn mower races will be held on Sunday, Aug. 15. There are daily live music acts at the Grandstand and the small stage. Mercer: Loon Capital
Mercer, Wisconsin, known as the Loon Capital of the Northwoods is never shy of entertainment for both residents and tourists alike.
Lupine Junefest/Bird Festival/BBQ Cook-Off The annual Lupine Junefest on June 12 is an opportunity for bicycle enthusiasts to tour southern Iron County and see the wild lupine flowers in full bloom. Participants can chose from routes of 10, 28 or 50 miles, or pick their own route. All routes start at Carrow Park and utilize both the town's paved roads and trail routes which run along lakes and rivers. Events run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For registration information go to mercerbybike.com The Mercer Bird Festival will also be going on at Carow Park that day. The annual event is part of the town's affiliation with Bird City Wisconsin and is open to birders and nature lovers from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guided bird hikes are scheduled for 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. There will also be bird banding demonstrations and a bird calling contest at noon. Fishing Tournament The Open All-Species Fishing Tournament on June 25-27 is a reinvented version of the former Can-Yak Fishing Tournament to allow for all types of watercraft to be used for this catch-andphoto style tournament. Instead of the Can-Yak (canoes and kayaks) will be a division of the tournament, with the other being open to all other vessels. The tournament takes place on the lakes and rivers in southern Iron County. Fourth of July The Fourth of July celebration starts at 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 4, with the 14th annual Be a Star Run for a Vet race. The race is a 5.1K run or a 1.1 mile walk/run that benefits the VFW building fund. The Mercer parade will begin at 11 a.m. Just prior to the parade there will be a flyover U.S. 51. Following the parade, festivities will continue at Carow Park starting at 3
p.m., featuring food and drinks. At 6 p.m., DJ Bryce Pitcair will take the stage and at 8 p.m. there will be a dedication to the men and women who serve the USA, followed by fireworks over Grand Portage Lake at dusk.
Loon Day Mercer will celebrate its 41st annual Loon Day on Aug. 4. The event will include more than 250 artists and crafters, as well as a flea market, sidewalk sales, live music, and a loon calling contest. Pig and Corn Roast The Turtle Flambeau Flowage Association Pig and Corn Roast will be held on Aug. 14 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Midway Bar in Butternut, Wis. The event menu will feature pork with “all the fixings” and sweet corn. Raffle proceeds go towards TFFA activities.

Emberlight Festival An inaugural extravaganza of the arts will occur this year in the form of the 2021 Emberlight Festival from Aug. 26-Sept. 3 in Gogebic County. Guest artists will include actress Emily Koch (Broadway's “Wicked” and “Waitress”), actor Philip Stoddard (Signature Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop), pianist John Arida (Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center), director Colton Pometta (Sun Valley Shakespeare, Broadway au Carré) and tenor Miles Mykkanen (The Metropolitan Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper). They will be featured in three “Broadway Under the Stars” performances at Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort in Bessemer. Those Main Stage events will highlight the works of legendary composer Stephen Sondheim. The Main Stage is just one segment of entertainment to be shared via the festival, which also will present Mykkanen and Arida in recital at the Historic Ironwood Theatre. A Film Festival with films by diverse filmmakers from several different continents also will be offered. Film submissions will close June 25, and the full line-up will be announced on July 15. In addition, Art in the Park, which will run within the broader time frame of July 2-Sept. 5, will include performances in Ironwood’s Miners Memorial Heritage Park on six different Saturdays throughout July and August. show at Ironwood's Historic Depot and Museum from Aug. 1Sept. 5. The festival is partnering with the Downtown Art Place (Aug. 25-Sept. 30) and Range Art Association (Aug. 26-Sept. 5) in relation to their annual art shows. Festival organizers are pleased to report that 80% of Emberlight's 2021 programs will be free and available to anyone in the community. Ironwood's City Square will offer three such events: 1. The world premiere of “Route 2 Elsewhere,” a documentary about small towns along a 1,500 mile stretch of U.S. 2; 2. An original play called “Kidspeak!” written by local elementary school children and performed by adult actors; and 3. A red carpet finale celebration on Sept. 3. Season tickets for the Emberlight Festival are available on the festival website, and individual tickets will be available for purchase on July 15. All of Emberlight's 2021 offerings will be socially distanced and will require facial coverings. The majority of the events will be outdoors in open-air venues, but the few performances that must happen indoors will follow every precaution set by the state of Michigan at the time of the events (including limited capacity, mask requirements, temperature checks, and COVID sanitation stations). The Emberlight Festival is presented by Theatre North in Ironwood. Further details on festival events will be available via local media and various social media venues, including emberlight.org.

Black River Harbor
Known for its spectacular waterfalls, idyllic beaches, scenic hiking trails and tranquil campground, the Black River Harbor Recreation Area is a popular destination throughout the year. The harbor offers one of the area's few access points to Lake Superior, with boating being a major summer time activity. The boat ramp can accommodate almost any craft trailered in. There is no launching fee. Boat fuel and snacks are available through the concessionaire. A historic pavillion built by the CCC is also located here. There are 60 picnic tables and grills available, as is a remodeled enclosed pavilion. The campground has 40 camp sites. Twenty-three are reserved camping sites and 17 more “first come, first serve” sites. The waterfalls are along the Black River which flows through large pine, hemlock and hardwood trees. There are multiple platforms accessible by trail to view various elevation drops to Lake Superior. Much of this trail is part of the North Country Trail. The Black River earns its name from the tannic acids leaching out of local hemlock trees. The Black River Harbor is managed by the Ottawa National Forest and is the only harbor within the National Forest System. Located approximately 15 miles north of Bessemer at the mouth of the Black River. In 1992, the Black River area was officially dedicated as a National Scenic Byway because of its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The Scenic byway stretch begins on County Road 513 at the intersection with County Road 204 (Airport Road) and travels 11 miles north to the harbor. During 1848, William A. Burt, a land surveyor, completed a survey of what is now the Black River Recreation Area. The original survey shows a wagon road going south from the mouth of the Black River to Chippewa Hill, which is the location of the Copper Peak Ski Flying Hill. For more information call 800-562-1201

Little Girl’s Point
The Little Girl’s Point Park, established as a recreational facility by Gogebic County in 1920, is on Lake Road, 18 miles north of Ironwood, along the shores of Lake Superior. There are 29 electric (30 amp power), and two non-electric campsites available for nightly or monthly reservations. Little Girl’s Point County Campground features breathtaking views of Lake Superior, as well as two pavilions with grills and picnic tables, walking trails and updated playground equipment. Within the park boundaries, the mouth of Oman’s Creek offers boating access. Camping, swimming, fishing, rock hounding, boating and sightseeing are all ways to enjoy the beauty and grandeur of Lake Superior and Little Girl’s Point County Park. On most days, the Porcupine Mountains are clearly visible to the east and the Apostle Islands are visible to the northwest. The Lodge at Little Girl’s Point, established in 1951 by the Gogebic County Cooperative Extension, is nearby. It has hosted many social events, including weddings, receptions, family reunions, class reunions and youth camps. The facility can sleep up to 40 overnight guests and provides a large kitchen and dining hall with a cut stone, wood-burning fireplace. There is space outdoors adequate for several tents or campers and provides a camp fire area and beach access. The Lodge offers guests a spectacular view of Lake Superior. The Lake Gogebic County Park is on M-64 in Marenisco, with direct access to the lake. There are 53 electric (30-amp) campsites and 27 sites that include water. The campground offers seasonal sites which can be occupied from midMay to the end of September. There are a number of sites also available for nightly of monthly camping reservations. Lake Gogebic County Park offers a pavilion with picnic tables, playground equipment, on-site boating access and provides camper sewage waste service for a minimal fee. The dock at the park provides a convenient way for campers to fish. There are several restaurants along the lake shore for visitors to enjoy, as well. North Country Trail
The longest trail in the National Trail System, the North Country National Scenic Trail stretches more than 4,600 miles from Vermont to North Dakota — including running through parts of Gogebic and Ontonagon counties and Iron County, Wis. Marked by blue blazes along the route, the North Country Trail offers an excellent route to explore many of the area’s forests and waterfalls. The roughly 40 miles of trail in Iron County is a mix of on-road and off-road hiking between Copper Falls State Park in Ashland County and the Michigan border near Superior Falls. The North Country Trail’s website describes the section as running through a “land of waterfalls and rock outcrops,” and being moderately difficult. “Passing through portions of the ancient, but worn down Penokee Mountain Range, you’ll encounter many rock outcrops,” the site’s description continues. “These outcrops offer expansive vistas where the trail passes over the top or skirts their bases and give trailside interest in the form of a wall of lichens, mosses, and small ferns.” Once in Michigan, the trail follows Lake and Airport Roads to Black River Road before going off-road near Copper Peak. The trail runs north to Black River Harbor before crossing the river and heading east toward M-64 and the Porcupine Mountains. “The area consists of mostly mature forest with diverse flora and fauna, a mixed terrain of old logging roads, narrow paths and elevation changes. Areas of particular beauty are Black River Harbor and the Presque Isle River area of Porcupine Mountain State Park,” according to the website. “The trail offers four seasons of recreational opportunity, each with its own special flavor.” The section of the trail in the Western Upper Peninsula is rated as difficult, although this could vary depending on where in the 192 miles between the state border and the Marquette/Baraga county line people are hiking. Sylvania Wilderness Area
The Sylvania Wilderness and Recreational Area located 7 miles east of Watersmeet and is part of the Ottawa National Forest. The area boasts 18,327 acres of camping, fishing, hiking, and canoeing. There are 34 lakes within the area itself. Many of the lakes offer sandy beaches, while the oldgrowth forests contain remarkably large pines. The area is also home to many endangered plants and animals native to this region. The Clark Lake campground offers 48 drive-up campsites with a nearby picnic area, showers, drinkable water, restrooms, and a boat launch. For more adventurous campers, the wilderness contains a multitude of campsites woven throughout the various hiking trails. The designated areas have a fire ring and a wilderness latrine provided at each site. A permit is required for all campers within the Sylvania Wilderness Area. The center itself offers a wealth of information and stimulating wildlife displays for the whole family, environmental education programs, area maps, and a gift shop with area merchandise and souvenirs. Access to several nature trails is also available from the visitor center location. The center is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday the rest of the year. Ottawa National Forest
The Ottawa National Forest has 22 campgrounds encapsulating a wide range of camping experiences. Each campsite is accessible by road and service tent and camper bush living. A nightly fee is charged at most campsites. Several campsites do provide free camping. Most campgrounds are opened by the Friday before Memorial Day and most close after Labor Day, although a handful remain open into the fall leaf season. Most campsites are located on streams or lakes and offer fishing opportunities. Additionally most managed campgrounds also include picnic tables, tent pads, fire grates, and toilet facilities. Some of the locations have drinking water available and can accommodate camping units from 45-60 feet in length. Camping in the Ottawa is on a first-come first-served basis with few exceptions. The most developed campsites in the Ottawa are located at Clark Lake and Black River Harbor areas with paved access, pressurized water systems, flush toilets and a trailer dump station. Camping in a developed campsite is not allowed to exceed 14 days without moving to another campground or dispersed site for 24 hours or more. Dispersed campsites will allow camping for 16 days at the same location. After 16 days the camper is required to

Three specific areas of the Ottawa are made available for those looking for more solitude, quiet and time to think. —The Sylvania Wilderness Area, which is 18,327 acres of wilderness located on the Watersmeet Ranger District, only accommodates foot and canoe travel. Camping is available by permit only. —The McCormick Wilderness Area is 16,850 acres of wilderness in the Kenton Ranger District, ranging from rocky cliffs to outcrops. Access to the McCormick is primarily by foot. There are canoe opportunities for those portaging. —The Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness is 14,139 acres of wilderness in the Kenton Ranger District with deep gorges. ONTONAGON TOWNSHIP PARK

Ontonagon Township Park
The Ontonagon Township Park offers beautiful rest and relaxation along Lake Superior. The 76-acre park was purchased in 1923, with additions purchased in 1929 and 1935 from the Longyear family in Marquette for $1 an acre. The park is located on the shore of Lake Superior with walking distance to the business community by way of a paved walkway. There are 80 campsites, two rental buildings for larger gatherings, a shower house, flush toilets, a large playground and a disc golf area. Each campsite has a fire pit, picnic table, water and power. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets can be seen out the window of a trailer or while sitting at the individual campsites. The park is one of only a few which permit bonfires on the beach. Campers can roast hot dogs or marshmallows and sing around the campfire as a bonus. Porcupine Mountains State Park Summer is a busy time for visitors in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Yearly from 250,000 to 300,000 visitors camp, hike, sightsee, fish, ski and enjoy the wonder of one of the few remaining large wilderness areas in the midwest. The many waterfalls in the park continue to draw people to the PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS WILDERNESS STATE PARK Silver City 800-447-2757 The Union Bay campground offers 100 campsites near Lake Superior. There are restrooms and a playground, as well as a nearby boat launch. There are an additional 50 campsites at the Presque Isle campground near the mouth of the Presque Isle River. Turtle Flambeau Flowage
The Turtle Flambeau Flowage Scenic Wilderness Waters Area is a nature lover’s vacation destination. There are 195 islands and six boat landings on nearly 19,000 acres of water, a result of 1926 dam construction to create a reservoir in southern Iron County. There are 66, non-reservable remote campsites that are accessible only by water, but there is also 35,500 acres of land to be explored. There are also six reservable campsites. The flowage offers five distinct trails stretching nearly 250 miles that are perfect for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and hunting. The five trails are Big Island Trail, Deadhorse Trail, Little Turtle Trail, Wilson Hills Trail and Hidden Rivers Nature Trail, which is wheelchair friendly. The Flambeau Flowage is known for its abundant wildlife, including eagles, deer, bear, timber wolves and moose. The flowage has a number of underwater stumps and driftwood that
make for an excellent fishing environment. Fishermen beware — muskies more than 50 pounds have been caught along the flowage. But the area is best known for its abundant walleye population. There are also smallmouth and largemouth bass, crappie, perch and bluegill.

Saxon Harbor
This summer marks the first time both Saxon Harbor's marina and campground will be open for a full season since they were destroyed in the July 2016 storm. The boat launches have already been opened for the season, with plans to open the harbor’s marina in early May when road restrictions are lifted and docks can be installed. The rebuilt marina features 71 seasonal slips and 14 transient slips. Water and power are also available to boaters, and there are plans to staff the marina seven days a week once it opens. Boat slip rates vary, based on both lengths and slip positions. The campground is planned to open for the season in mid-May, with 26 RV sites and five tent sites available for
reservation. County officials ask that people adhere to responsible social distancing recommendations while using the harbor’s areas so they can remain open for recreational enjoyment.

Iron Belle Trail The Iron Belle Trail is an ongoing and exciting new development in the area and across the state. It is a set of two trails that are planned to run throughout the state of Michigan from Ironwood to Belle Isle Park in Detroit. It is considered to be the longest designated state trail system in the nation. One trail is for hiking and the other for biking and other nonmotorized use. The two scenic trails wind along the beautiful Northwoods landscape along rivers and other natural landmarks. Locally, the Western Gateway Trail Authority has been instrumental in building a paved trail from Ironwood to Ramsay, Page 40 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
mostly along a former railroad grade. The paved trail crosses many bridges and reaches into Hurley on the western end. Organizers hope to extend the trail further east into Wakefield. The North Country Trail along the Black River in northern Gogebic County and over to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park has been designated as part of the Iron Belle hiking trail. U.S. 2 comprises much of the biking route across the U.P. It is anticipated that the expansion will continue in years to come with a potential for connection with the Northern Highlands Regional Non-motorized Trail which begins in Mercer, Wisconsin, and other trail systems in the region.

Gile Flowage The expansive Gile (Wis.) Flowage offers a variety of fishing opportunities, but walleyes and monster muskies are the prime species. There are four boat landings on the Montreal River Flowage that is controlled by Xcel Energy. of walleyes. Walleyes inhabit shallow water after spawning in the spring and tend to move deeper during the summer months. They can readily be caught from shore in spring on bait or with artificial lures, like Rapalas. There’s also an abundant population of smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskies and panfish, like crappies. Winter fishing has become as popular on the flowage as summer angling, and tents spring up across the ice during cold weather months.

Miners Murals
Downtown Ironwood offers the public a look back into history with two miners murals honoring the miners who worked on the Gogebic Iron Range in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula. The newest mural was complete in 2019 and is on the 100 block of South Lowell Street. The other, completed in 2012, is located on the 100 block of East McLeod Avenue. The murals were supported by those listed on plaques along the bottom of the murals, many of them family members

honoring their relatives who worked in the mines. Downtown also offers three parks — Pocket, Art and Depot — as well as Hiawatha Park and its 52-foot statue of the Native American chief a few blocks to the south on Burma Road. The Ironwood Area Historical Society and Museum share space in the former Chicago-North Western Rail Road depot with the Ironwood Area Chamber of Commerce. Museums
There are several museums in the area which preserve local history and culture in the form of photographs, equipment and other artifacts. In Ironwood, the Old Depot Park Museum is located downtown between Lowell and Suffolk streets. The building was constructed in 1892 and served as the Chicago North Western Railroad depot. The museum features iron mining displays, railroad memorabilia, items from Ironwood’s past and the Ironwood Historical Society research center. For more information, call 906-932-0287. The Ironwood Area Chamber of Commerce also has its office in the old depot. The Ironwood Memorial Building houses municipal offices, a 1,500-seat auditorium and many historical displays, including a statue of a World War I doughboy and numerous bronze tablets listing locals who served during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and the World War I. The building is located at the corner of McLeod Avenue and Marquette Street. For more information, call 906-932-5050. Located at 202 Iron St. in Hurley, the Iron County Historical Society Museum opened in 1971 in the former Iron County Courthouse. It displays artifacts on the history of local mining and logging communities. It is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the summer months. Little Finland cultural center and museum in located on U.S. 2 west of Hurley and showcases the Finnish heritage with two authentic log homes of Finnish immigrant families. The Taipele Trail crosses a trout stream and leads back to the fire circle. Open Tuesdays and Saturdays, April thru December from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Bessemer Area Heritage Center on South Sophie Street is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend. The Wakefield Historical Society Museum boasts a classroom display, general store, and mining exhibits. Its artifacts can be dated back as far as 1884. For more information, call 906-224-1045. Just off of U.S. 51 in Mercer, is the Hisotrical Society’s Depot Museum. The re-purposed railroad depot showcases items from Mercer’s history, including tools used by early settlers, early photographs, maps, and archived newspapers. Aside from the museum itself, there are three historical buildings on the grounds including an old jail, barber shop and one-room schoolhouse. The Ontonagon County Historical Society Museum houses mining, logging, farming, and marine artifacts. The museum is open from May through September. ‘Where the waters meet’
Watersmeet lives up to its name by offering 302 lakes and 241 miles of trout streams. According to the Watersmeet Chamber of Commerce, the Cisco Chain alone has 15 lakes. The Lac Vieux Desert Lake, shared by Wisconsin, also has 4,200 acres of boundary waters and welcomes both Michigan and Wisconsin fishing licenses. The origin of Watersmeet’s name, according to the chamber, comes from three rivers that flow from the region in different directions — the Ontonagon River flows north into Lake Superior, the Wisconsin River flows south into the Mississippi River, and the Paint River flows east into Lake Michigan; hence, this is the place “where the waters meet.” All that water makes for a fisherman’s paradise, with species including walleye, northern pike, cisco, trout, smalland large-mouth bass, panfish (such as bluegill, perch and crappie), silver musky, and state- and world-record tiger musky. May 15 is the fishing opener for northern pike and walleye. Catch-and-keep season for bass opens May 29. Free fishing without a license may be done on June 12-13. State parks, as well as state boating access sites, may be entered with no recreation pass on those days. The region’s trees rival water in abundance. The Ottawa National Forest features more than 1 million acres and 10 national forest campgrounds. As part of that forest, the Sylvania Wilderness Area is run by the U.S. Forest Service. The Sylvania area boasts about 20,000 acres of “virgin forest,” and portages connect many of its lakes. Its recreation area has a 48-unit campground, a pavilion with showers, boat landings, and a beach and picnic area. Finally, the Michigan Trails and Recreation Alliance of Land and the Environment manages and maintains more than 500 miles of recreational trails in the Western U.P. Some of its seasonal plans remain unresolved due to COVID-19, but Michigan will offer two free weekends on June 12-13 and Aug. 21-22 when ORV riders can use trails for free with no need of an ORV license or trail permit. Lake Gogebic Area
As the largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Lake Gogebic provides plenty of fun year round. With more than 13,000 acres in both Gogebic and Ontonagon counties, the lake offers walleye, jumbo perch, whitefish, smallmouth bass and northern pike. Kayaking has become popular on the lake and on several bays and streams around the lake, and some resorts offer kayak rentals. Surrounding the 36-mile shoreline are opportunities for hiking among waterfalls, wildlife and the Ottawa National Forest. The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce also holds a monthly fishing contest and tagged fish contest from May 15-Sept. 14. In addition, the chamber will sponsor a John Murphy Memorial Walleye Tournament on Sept. 10 and 11. The prize for first place will be $2,000. The weekend of June 12-13 will feature free fishing and ORV riding (no license required). The annual Tour da Lake Bicycle Tour around Lake Gogebic has been cancelled this year. Copper Peak
The Adventure Ride at Copper Peak is a popular area attraction that provides panoramic views from the top of a former ski jump. The jump was used for international ski competitions from 1970 until it was closed in 1994. The Adventure Ride lets visitors take an 800-foot chair lift ride to an observation deck where visitors can view from there, or continue up an additional eight stories to the very top. The awe-inspiring, unobstructed vista overlooks the south shore of Lake Superior including Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park that is 25 miles northeast in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; 40 miles northwest past the Apostle Islands and northeast Wisconsin, and north across Lake Superior to Isle Royle, Michigan, and to northern Minnesota and Canada. The Adventure Ride typically opens Memorial Day Weekend and this year will be dependent on the expiration of the current COVID-19 shutdown order. Once open the Adventure Ride will be operational through mid-October. Copper Peak is 10 miles north of Bessemer by taking Black River Road (County Road 513) to N13870 Copper Peak Road. There are on-site mountain bike trails, a gift shop. Copper Peak is a registered Michigan Historic Site and member of the Western Upper Peninsula Heritage Network. Waterfalls
The many rivers in the area form an abundance of waterfalls. Use extreme caution on riverbanks and respect the power of the water. Officials from area chambers of commerce, the Ottawa National Forest and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park can provide maps and more information.
Black River National Forest Scenic Byway
The Black River’s final descent towards Lake Superior provides five spectacular waterfalls to visit.
Directions: Head north for about 3 miles along Powderhorn Road off of U.S. 2 near Bessemer. Take a left onto Black River Road and follow for it for over 10 miles. The waterfalls are on the right.
GREAT CONGLOMERATE FALLS 46.6325 - 90.055 This 20-foot waterfall is the first coming from town towards Black River Harbor. The 3/4 mile walk is the farthest of the five. It is named for the large piece of conglomerate rock that divides the two segments. POTAWATOMI FALLS 46.6375 - 90.05139 These falls feature a 30-foot drop.

half-mile hike from the Rainbow parking area leads to the observation deck. The best view is from the east side of the river, which can be accessed from Black River Harbor. Walk across the bridge and there is a sign before the beach. The mile-long trail is mostly flat after initally climbing the riverbank. Be careful, there is no guardrail.

PRESQUE ISLE RIVER WATERFALLS
Directions: From Wakefield, travel east along M-28 to County Road 519. Follow that road north until you pass South Boundary Road, heading into the park and to a trail to visit the falls. This is part of the Porcupine Mountains

NAWADAHA FALLS 46.699 - 89.974 This is a low (15 feet), wide waterfall further upstream. It is near South Boundary Road and can also be accessed from the wilder, more primitive east side of the river, as can all three.

SAXON FALLS
46.5327 - 90.3827 Drive west on U.S. 2 from Ironwood for about 10.5 miles, entering Wisconsin. Make a right turn onto County B and follow 2.4 miles, then continue on Saxon Falls Road for another 1/2 mile. These 110-foot falls are located on the Montreal River. The gorge below the falls is one of the deepest in the Midwest. This waterfall is a strange one to access as it’s near a power plant.
SUPERIOR FALLS 46.564818 - 90.415244 Take Wisconsin 122, turning north off of U.S. 2, near Saxon. Stay on 122 for 4.2 miles, crossing the Wisconsin-Michigan border. Continue another 1/2 mile, then turn left on a gravel road marked by Xcel Energy. At 90 feet high, the falls are fed by the Montreal River near Lake Superior. KIMBALL FALLS 46.485907 - 90.263706 Take U.S. 2 west of Hurley, turn south on Park Road and west on Town Park Drive. These gently cascading rapids on the west branch of the Montreal River skirt the Kimball Town Park. The park offers picnic and play areas, as well as a nature trail. POTATO RIVER FALLS 46.461142 - 90.53032 Take U.S. 2 to Wisconsin 169 and turn south. Continue for 2.8 miles through Gurney, then turn right on Potato River Falls Road. Travel 1.5 miles until you can’t drive any farther. Rustic picnic campsites are available. The falls are a monstrous 90 feet high, located on the Potato River in Gurney. FOSTER FALLS 46.4225 - 90.4587 Head north from Upson on Wisconsin 122 for five miles. Turn west on Sullivan Road for three miles.
SPRING CAMP FALLS 46.347726 - 90.23942 From Hurley, take U.S. 51 south for 4.7 miles and turn right onto County C. Follow that for 1.5 miles. The road turns sharply north, don’t take that. Continue on the gravel road for a mile, turn south and follow Island Lake Road for 3 miles. Turn right, go about 1.3 miles and follow the rustic path signs. The 20-feet high falls are along the west branch of the Montreal River, south of Hurley, and are also known as the Montreal Falls.

46.39781 - 90.50755 Located along the Tyler Forks River, Wren Falls are 30 feet high. Take U.S. 2 15 miles west of Hurley and turn left on Wisconsin 169. Travel about 5.7 miles and turn left on Vogues Road. Stay on there for about 3.5 miles. At the hairpin turn, take the center road across for 1.5 miles. From there, hike up the hill to a primitive campsiite on the north side of the falls. UPSON FALLS

Located on the Baltimore River, these 25-feet high falls are worth the long hike. One of the only few plunge falls in Michigan, daredevils can actually go behind the falls in the summer but must be careful. AGATE FALLS
46.48083-89.09083 Take M-28 east of Bruce Crossing for 6.5 miles. There’s a park on the south side of the highway. These 30-feet high falls are part of the middle branch of the Ontonagon River and considered among the most beautiful in Michigan. There is an observation deck, but the view is better from below the falls, which requires a difficult walk down a fisherman’s trail. BOND FALLS
46.40889 - 89.13278 Take U.S. 45 south of Bruce Crossing and head east on Bond Falls Road. The 50-foot falls are fed by the middle branch of the Ontonagon River and Bond Flowage. Bond Falls are more than 100 feet wide. These are very easy to access.

POWDERHORN FALLS 46.30364 - 90.04913 Turn north onto Powderhorn Road off U.S. 2 before getting to Bessemer. Just before the road curves hard to the left, there is a parking spot on the right. It’s a short hike to the top of an outcropping. Climbing down further requires caution. These are part of Powder Mill Creek as it makes its way to the Black River.

Golf courses
Golfing the courses on the Gogebic Range is an excellent way to spend a summer day. From the panoramic views from the Skye course on Whitecap Mountains near Iron Belt to the 18 holes at the Lac Vieux Desert Casino in Watersmeet, there are plenty of tree-lined challenges for golfers of all levels. The Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood (906-932-2525) offers 18 holes on a mostly flat layout, with plenty of interesting holes that offer a variety of options. Perhaps the signature hole is the dogleg par four No. 14, guarded by deep bunkers on both sides. A steeply sloped green adds to the challenge. The long par 5 finishing hole, with a green that can be viewed from the dining area of the clubhouse, is another favorite. At the Eagle Bluff Golf Club in Hurley (715-561-3552), the sloped greens are a challenge and the back nine can be brutal under windy conditions. Still, there are plenty of short holes that present birdie opportunities following accurate drives. The toughest hole is the par four No. 11, which doglegs right. It takes a healthy drive to get a look at the green and keeping the ball in play off the tee can be tough. Five is a good score on the 420-yard hole. Watersmeet’s Lac Vieux Desert (906-358-0303) course, with its blue grass fairways, is right next to the casino. The
back nine is as challenging as any course in the area. Tahoe Lynx near Mercer (715-476-0050), offers nine holes in a wooded setting. Skye Golf Club (715-561-2227) includes nine holes built into the ski runs and trails of Whitecap Mountain with views of Iron County, Lake Superior and Weber Lake. Other courses in the region include the Chequamegon Bay in Ashland, the Ontonagon Golf Club, the Gateway Golf Club in Land O’ Lakes, the Mellen Country Club and the Trout Lake Golf Club in Arbor Vitae.

Non-motorized trails
There are plenty of both motorized and non-motorized recreation opportunities in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula, including a number of hiking and biking trails in the area. Maps and more information on the Wisconsin trails can be found at ironcountyoutdoors.org/iron-county-trails. Wisconsin
BIG ISLAND TRAIL: Located in the Turtle Flambeau Scenic Waters Area, this 8.8-mile trail system begins at the bridge to Big Island and can be accessed by going roughly 3.6 miles south on Popko Circle West from County FF before turning on a woods road heading west toward Big Island. A grass parking area for a couple of vehicles is located roughly 100 yards before the bridge. The trail is open to hiking and hunting, but not biking, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
CARY PARK TRAIL: This .75-mile trail rings Cary Park in the city of Hurley and runs along Wisconsin 77 towards the city's nearby downtown, where users can take city streets to connect to the Hurley trailhead between Second Avenue and the Montreal River.
CORRIGAN'S LOOKOUT: Located between the communities of Saxon and Upson, this short, .25-mile trail takes visitors from the parking area off Wisconsin 122 to one of northern Iron County's best scenic overlooks.
DEADHORSE TRAIL: This 4.6-mile trail in the Turtle Flambeau Scenic Waters Area can be accessed off Popko Circle West, roughly two miles south of County FF. Located in a special management unit for ruffed grouse, seven interpretive signs are located on the trail to provide information on how property owners can manage land for grouse. The trail is open to hiking and hunting, but not biking, according to the WDNR. Page 60 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
FROG LAKE AND PINES: Located in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, this .17-mile trail is open to hiking year-round, according to the WDNR, but as a volunteer trail only and without designated trail or amenities. It can be accessed off Wisconsin 47, south of Mercer. Biking is not permitted. HIDDEN RIVERS TRAIL: One of several trails in the Turtle Flambeau Scenic Waters Area, this approximately 2-mile trail is located on Fisherman's Landing Road. The trail has a gravel base and has interpretive signs explaining the history of the flowage and
management of the property. The trail is open to hiking and hunting, but not biking, according to the WDNR.
HURLEY SCHOOL FOREST: This 0.6 mile-trail runs through the Hurley School Forest north of where Knight Road cuts across the Gile Flowage.
INTERSTATE FALLS: A short 0.3-mile trail leads from the parking at the trailhead, through the town of Kimball's property, to the 18-foot waterfall on the Montreal River. The trailhead can be accessed near the U.S. 2-U.S. 51 intersection just outside of Hurley.

ISLAND LAKE HEMLOCKS SNA: Island Lake Hemlocks, near Island Lake Road in the town of Knight, features one of the oldest and most intact oldgrowth hemlock-hardwood stands in northern Wisconsin, according to the WDNR. The state nature area features .56 miles of trails and is open to hiking year-round, according to the WDNR, but as a volunteer trail only and without designated trail or amenities. Biking is not allowed.
KIMBALL TOWN PARK TRAIL: A short, 0.27-mile trail runs through the Kimball Town Park at Kimball Falls on the west fork of the Montreal River. The trail can be accessed from U.S. 2 by taking Park Road south to Town Park Road and parking at the road's end and walking across the bridge. LEARNING ADVENTURE TRAIL: Located near the Hurley K-12 School, this 1.78-mile trail includes three different trails.
LIPP LAKE TRAIL: This half-mile trail loops around Lipp Lake in the Turtle Flambeau Scenic Waters Area. Located just off Popko Circle West, the trail goes through old growth white pine forests. The trail is open to hiking and hunting, but not biking, according to the WDNR. LITTLE TURTLE TRAIL: Part of the MECCA Trail System, the 5.2 miles of mowed trail in the Little Turtle Waterfowl Management Area is at the end of Joe's Shack Road. The trail is open to hiking and hunting, but not biking, according to the WDNR.
MECCA SKI TRAILS: Known mostly as a winter recreation site, the club that maintains the trails has taken steps to expand the site into a year-round destination. Although roughly nine of the 13 miles of trail are accessible — mostly through the Little Turtle Flowage trailhead off Joe's Shack Road — the club plans to complete a boardwalk project in partnership with the Iron County Forestry Department to open virtually all the trails, 12 of the 13 miles, to yearround use. The project would also make it easier for users to utilize both the Joe's Shack Road trailhead and the Page 62 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
club's chalet trailheads on Fierick Road.
MERCER BIKE TRAIL: This 7.8-mile trail travels through Mercer southeast into Vilas County, where it becomes part of the 52-mile Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail system that winds through lakes, rivers and forests to connect Mercer with Manitowish Waters, Boulder Junction, Sayner and St. Germain. MERCER RANGER STATION NATURE TRAIL: This .6-mile trail loops around the Mercer Ranger Station of U.S. 51 in the northern part of town. The trail is open year-round for hiking, according to the WDNR, but biking is not permitted.
MERCER SCHOOL FOREST: Located east of town off Martha Lake Road, this .8-mile trail runs through the Mercer School Forest.
MONTREAL SKI TRAILS: Although the 5.34 miles of trails in the city of
Montreal and town of Pence aren't necessarily designed for non-winter use, they are open to non-motorized users year-round. Although there is a connector trail from Pence to the Uller Trail near Upson, the easements for that section are limited to winter use only.
POTATO RIVER FALLS: This .34-mile trail, including the many steps and stairs, allows visitors to explore both the Upper and Lower Potato River Falls from the parking area at the end of Potato River Falls Road. There are 131 steps to the Upper and 204 steps to the Lower. To access the falls, visitors should take Wisconsin 169 south through the town of Gurney to Potato River Falls road.
SAXON FALLS: People can follow the short, .1-mile wooded hiking trail to the east of the parking area off Saxon Falls Road to reach the overlook location that offers views of Saxon Falls and deep gorge below the falls. People can take County B to get to Saxon Falls Road.

SCHOMBERG PARK SNOWSHOE TRAIL: Although primarily a snowshoe trail, Schomberg Park, located on U.S. 51 in Oma, features two loops for a combined 1.7 miles of trails. The swampy terrain could be a bit of a challenge during the non-winter months and users should explore at their own risk.
ULLER TRAIL: Another trail system that is more known as a winter destination, the Uller Trail offers 11 miles of trails through remote rolling and hilly terrain. Trailheads are located in Pence on Wisconsin 77, Hoyt Road about 1 mile north of Wisconsin 77, in Iron Belt on North Road and at Weber Lake. As with the Montreal Trails, the Uller Trail isn't necessarily maintained for heavy summer use and users encouraged to both use at their own risk and respect the trail by minimizing the impact of their use. Summer access between the Uller Trail and the trails in Montreal is limited as the connector trail is restricted to winter use only. WHITECAP MOUNTAIN: A pair of trails across Whitecap Mountain Resort near the town of Upson combine for a total of 1.5 miles of bike trails.
WILSON HILLS: Two segments between Wilson Lake and the Bonies Mound Area of the Turtle Flambeau Flowage combine to form this 5.5-mile of maintained trail. The trail can be accessed from several points along a woods road off Wilson Lake Road East. It's open to hiking and hunting, but not biking, according to the WDNR.
WINMAN: Located in Winchester, Wisconsin, WinMan Trails offers non-winter users over 14 miles of single-track mountain bike trails that range from beginner to expert in difficulty level. The four-season trail system travels over rolling hills and through pines and hardwood forests. There is also more than 16 miles of trails for hikers and runners.

COPPER PEAK: Known mostly for its ski jump, Copper Peak in Ironwood Township also offers mountain bikers and trail runners a great experience to those of all abilities. The ride is not a "technical" trail system, according to Copper Peak's website, but the 600 feet of elevation gain over the 5.5 miles of trails makes for a fun, challenging and exciting adventure. Beginning at the base of the ski jump landing hill and descending down to the beautiful Black River to enjoy the river scenery, users then take winding trails up a 600vertical foot ascent to the top of the ski jump to a beautiful 360-degree view and the massive ski jump structure. After resting up, the trip back down to the base offers dozens of bermed corners and other fun “play” features for those on bikes. MICHIGAN VISITORS CENTER/RIVERSIDE TRAILS: Starting at either the Pure Michigan Wel-
come Center on U.S. 2 or the Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood, this trail offers three loops of hiking and biking trails through the Riverside Cemetery and along the Montreal River.
MINERS MEMORIAL HERITAGE PARK: Located in the city of Ironwood, what used to be a mining operation within the city limits is now home to a mix of motorized and non-motorized trails. Offering a unique attraction for residents and tourists alike, the nonmotorized trails can be used for activities including hiking and biking, running and walking, while providing safe corridors between many locations within the city of Ironwood and the opportunity for regional trail connections.
MT. ZION: Located on the campus of Gogebic Community College and owned and operated by the college; a short, but challenging, roughly half-mile walking and biking trail takes users up the hill to the summit that provides views overlooking much of Ironwood Township and Copper Peak in the distance.

NORRIE PARK: Built as one of the area's Civilian Conservation Corps camps during the Great Depression, Norrie Park today offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking and biking trails and a Montreal River walk. The park entrance is off Norrie Park Road, south of Ironwood.
OTTAWA NATIONAL FOREST: Hiking trails on the Ottawa National Forest offer something for everyone. More than 196 miles of hiking and backpacking trails vary widely in character, providing everything from short easy walks to waterfalls, historic sites or other points of interest to multi-day backpacking trips across the forest. The forest also provides a wide variety of mountain biking opportunities ranging from well-maintained and signed loops to more challenging cross-country travel. Besides wilderness and specifically designated hiker-only trails (including the North Country National Scenic Trail), the entire forest is open to mountain bikes. This includes closed, gated and blocked roads unless the road is specifically closed to bicycles. Many of the designated mountain bike trails are also open to other uses including, motor vehicle travel, ATVs, ORVs, snowmobiles, hikers and horses, so users are asked to be careful and share the trail.
PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS WILDERNESS STATE PARK: The state park offers 90 miles of hiking trails throughout its wilderness, including portions of the North Country National Scenic Trail and the statewide Iron Belle Trail. The park also offers a mix of on-road and off-road biking options, including the 107th Engineers Memorial Highway and M-64 along the south shore of Lake Superior and over 20 miles of mountain bike trails, with loops ranging from 1.5 to 10.5 miles. Bike rentals are also available from late May through mid-October at the Porcupine Mountain Outpost near the Union Bay Campground.
POWERS ROAD: A multiple-use trail that is open to all forms of travel, the Powers Road trails system that cuts across the back of Little Girl's Point in
Ironwood Township provides some of the most scenic views in the region as the trail winds back and forth through vast stretches of Gogebic County forest land and over some of the highest elevations in the area. Because portions of the trail may be more difficult for some users, connection loops bring users around these areas. The system also includes the Bald Mountain interpretive trail that brings users, by way of an old two track, to the top of Bald Mountain.
SPLIT ROCK: Alltrails.com describes the Split Rock Trail Loop as a .9-mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Wakefield that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips. The trails can be accessed by following Putnam Street on to Castile Road. SUNDAY LAKE LOOP: This trail, made up of a mix of paved trail, sidewalk and boardwalk, provides an almost 3-mile loop around Sunday Lake in Wakefield.
WOLF MOUNTAIN: The Wolf Mountain Hiking Trail east of Wakefield is a roughly .7-mile lightly trafficked trail rated moderate to difficult that provides access to a diverse display of spring wildflowers and rock outcrop plants. The trail is short but quite steep. It starts at the end of Forest Road 9300, and heads upward through tall sugar maple and oak trees. On either side of the trail many types of flowers can be seen. At about .3 miles, a lookout is reached, with a wide view to the west, looking over the forest canopy below. The trail ducks back into the woods and emerges at a second west-facing lookout. About three-tenths of a mile further, the trail ends at a summit, with exposed rock under pine trees making an inviting rest or picnic spot. To reach Wolf Mountain, follow Forest Road 9300 north from U.S. 2 for 3.1 miles, crossing a creek and two utility corridors, to where this native surface road ends in a turnaround loop. The trailhead is at the end of the loop and is marked with a small brown sign depicting a hiker.
WOLVERINE SKI TRAILS/BIG POWDERHORN TRAILS: With approximately 15 miles of ski trails including several loops for classic striding and skate skiing, 8.7 miles of marked snowshoe trails and 4.3 miles of snow bike trails, Wolverine Trails is another local trail system known mostly for its winter offerings, but it also offers biking, trail running and hiking opportunities during the warmer months.

NORTH COUNTRY TRAIL: The North Country National Scenic Trail runs more than 4,600 miles between North Dakota and Vermont, including through parts of both Gogebic and Ontonagon counties in Michigan and Iron County in Wisconsin.
IRON BELLE: The local section of the statewide non-motorized trail running between Ironwood and Belle Isle in Detroit continues to be developed with the completion of a section between Bessemer and Ramsay.
