The 28th annual Bessemer Blast will be held from Monday, June 27, to Monday, July 4. A 50/50 raffle, a poker run and a geocache dash begin June 27. That evening, the seventh annual Tree of Honor lighting is set for 7 p.m. in the Pocket Park along Sophie Street. On Tuesday, June 28, the Bessemer Veterans of Foreign Wars will serve hamburgers and fries from 3 to 7 p.m. At 6 p.m., the Fat Tire Bike Tour will start at Bluff Valley Park. Meanwhile, bingo at city hall will take place at 6 p.m. New this year, on Wednesday, June 29, Letters from Home will play at 6 p.m. in the city hall auditorium. mission to honor veterans, active military and their families through the music and spirit of the 1940s. On Sophie Street, people can participate in outdoor giant-size beer pong at 7 p.m on Sophie Street. Meanwhile, there will also be a bean bag toss and an outdoor electric dart tournament at 7 p.m. Also, Marty’s Goldenaires will also be practicing at 7 p.m. along Sophie Street. Thursday, June 30, offers a polka dance with Hank Thunander at the Bessemer VFW from 3 to 7 p.m. The American Legion Post 27 will serve spaghetti for dinner beginning at 4 to 7 p.m. Then, a disk jockey will offer music from 8 to 11 p.m. on Sophie Street.

On Friday, July 1, at noon, people can take helicopter rides from an open field east of town on U.S. 2. Domestic Violence Escape will hold a bingo game at 2 p.m. in the city hall auditorium. There will also be more outdoor bean bag toss, electric dart and giantsize beer pong games on Sophie Street starting at 7 p.m. At 9 p.m., there will be a “1/2 New Year’s Party +1 Day” at Pit Stop Bar and Grill. Saturday, July 2, begins at 8:30 a.m. with the 28th annual Hometown Walk/Run and the seventh annual Tot Trot beginning at city hall. luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sharon Lutheran Church on Sellar Street. Mud runs start a 1 p.m. at the pit on North Moore Street. Back downtown, there will be the Children’s Freedom Relay from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the third annual chalk drawing competition takes place from 6:30 to 7 p.m., and then music starts playing for the sixth annual outdoor children’s dance at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the fifth annual outdoor War tournament starts at 7 p.m. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. along Sophie Street will be the fifth annual water balloon toss. Sunday, July 3, tips off at 9 a.m. with the second annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament. At 4 p.m., grab some grub at the Bessemer Lions Club Chicken Dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. at the St. Sebastian gym on Iron Street. Kids street bowling begins on Sophie Street at 5 p.m. After that, the Bessemer High School band will perform on the street at 6 p.m. Then, the 28th annual Simon Says starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by the 13th annual Derrick Brown Memorial Sling Shot Water Balloon Launch at 7 p.m., followed by the street dance at 9 p.m. Festivities on Monday, July 4, begin at 6 a.m. with Pancho’s Memorial Salute on Massie Field. Helicopter rides begin again at 10 a.m. and the children’s parade commences at 1:30 p.m. At 2 p.m., the Bessemer Volunteer Fire Department will host an open house and the geocache dash also ends at this time. Prior to the parade, the Bessemer High School band marches the parade route at 6 p.m., followed by a Memory Lane Cruise along the parade route by classic cars. Bessemer’s Giant Fourth of July Parade begins 7 p.m. and the 50/50 raffle closes. Following the parade, all events for the remainder of the evening are at Massie Field, including the Marty’s Goldenaires concert and the Thunder on the Mountain fireworks display.

MEMORIAL DAY ATV RALLY
For the 31st year, Iron County will celebrate Memorial Day weekend with the annual ATV/UTV Weekend Rally, Thursday, May 26 through Sunday, May 30. Friday’s big parade begins early with events for riders and spectators at the parade line up site located approximately 2 miles west of Hurley on Trail 77. Starting at noon, participants can stop by the Hurley Chamber of Commerce’s event tent and pick up their poker run information, purchase 50/50 tickets and find out Page 8 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
general information on the weekend of events. Vendors will be located at the line- up site, with gear and food/ beverages available for purchase. An obstacle course for ATVs and UTVs will be part of the activities. Live music featuring Outlaw’d will begin at 3 p.m. and continue until the parade starts at 7 p.m. Participants can enter the selfie contest for a chance to win a four-pack of tickets to a Milwaukee Brewers game.
Sunday brings the Infamous mud pit. The Hurley Fire Department invites participants to challenge themselves to the pit. Registration begins at noon with racing to start at 1 p.m. Food, beverages, DJ music and raffles available throughout the afternoon. Everyone is welcome. THE BEACH BOYS AUGUST 13 The Ironwood Chamber of Commerce purchased and installed a 52-foot fiberglass statue of Native American chief Hiawatha for $10,000 in 1964. The statue was manufactured by Gordon Industries of Minneapolis and transported 230 miles on a flatbed truck to its current location at the end of Burma Road in Hiawatha Park on June 25, 1964. Hiawatha was believed to have created peace among Native American tribes and is credited for forming the Iroquois nation. Hiawatha was hoisted to a standing position by a mining crane and is supported by 55 yards of concrete and 5,000 pounds of steel reinforcements. The statue is made to withstand winds of 140 mph. For a number of years the community celebrated Hiawatha Days over a long weekend in July. They included events like concerts, a battle of the bands, a rodeo, downtown carnival, softball tournament and authentic Ojibway dancers from Lac du Flambeau, Wis. The Ironwood Chamber of Commerce offered a 50th birthday celebration for the Hiawatha statue in July 2015 as part of Festival Ironwood, the community’s current mid-July celebration The Native American chief still stands tall just south of downtown Ironwood welcoming visitors. The chamber is helping to raise $25,000 to restore the statue, including painting and structural work. Officials also hope to improve signage. For more information, visit ironwoodchamber.org.

FESTIVAL IRONWOOD
Festival Ironwood, a four-day gathering of reunions set around entertainment and displays at Depot Park, returns to Ironwood July 13-16. Held every year at Depot Park, thousands of people gather to enjoy the food, crafts, music, car shows and a good time. In addition to a wide range of musical entertainment, the festival features games for the kiddies and adults alike. The World’s Largest Duck Pick is an annual event. Crafts shows, volleyball, pool, poker, a teen dance and antique autos from the Klassic Kruisers show are other Page 10 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
events that take place at Depot Park, but not all of the activities take place there. The Festival Ironwood Walk, Run & Roll 5-mile and 2-mile events are planned for downtown Ironwood on Saturday, July 16, 8:30 a.m. The Miners Memorial Heritage Park, Downtown Art Place and churches also schedule events to coordinate with a weekend that many former Ironwood residents mark on their calendars for a visit. IRON COUNTY FAIR
The Iron County Fair in Saxon, Wis., returns for its 89th edition Aug. 4-7. Billed as a “good old county fair,” there are activities and exhibits for all ages, from carnival rides and a mud run to a pie auction Sunday afternoon. The fair will again be a part of the Iron County Heritage Festival, which packages many events under one umbrella in late July and August. The fair has returned to its roots and that is reflected in an antique tractor Page 12 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
show that is a highlight of Sunday’s event. The Red Clay Classic Mud Run on Saturday afternoon draws competitors from throughout northern Wisconsin and the Sunday old-fashioned horse pulling contest is a priority for many fair-goers. A livestock auction, 4-H horse shows and plenty of musical entertainment are offered. This year’s fair will also feature a
rodeo, held in the fair’s horse arena Saturday afternoon. Fair organizers are also offering half-price admission Friday night only, beginning at 5 p.m. Food booths and refreshments are also available. To get to the fair from Ironwood or Hurley, take U.S. 2 west to Saxon, then turn left at either the County Trunk B intersection or the Wisconsin 122 intersection.

The Gogebic County Fair’s 95th annual celebration is scheduled for Aug. 25-28. That’s about two weeks later than normal. The fairgrounds are off Cloverland Drive on the west end of the city. For 2016, a season’s pass will cost $30, or attendees may pay the single day rates of $12, except for Thursday, when the cost will be $10. Passes obtained at the gate allow fair-goers to all of the entertainment acts for free and also free carnival rides.
Each year, the fair board works hard to find new and exciting entertainment, while also keeping long-time traditions, like harness racing, and other popular events on the schedule. A large and dedicated group of volunteers continues to make the annual fair a success and people interesting in helping out may complete a form on the fair’s website.

COPPER PEAK ADVENTURE RIDE
Copper Peak’s Adventure Ride provides a unique experience. It involves an 800-foot chairlift ride to the top of the hill, and an 18-story elevator ride to the main observation deck near the top of the world’s largest ski flying platform. From the main observation deck, or from the very top of the ski structure, one can overlook more than 2,500 square miles of the Lake Superior basin and see a flyer’s perspective of what it takes physically and mentally to strap on a pair of eight-foot skis, accelerate to 65 mph down the 469foot in-run and, with a leap of faith, soar more than 600 feet down to the bottom of the hill. The view from atop Copper Peak is untainted by development. On a clear day it is possible to see 85 miles across Lake Superior to northern Minnesota near the Canadian border. Observe historic landmarks ad the Apostle Islands (40 Page 16 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
miles to the northwest), Isle Royale (80 miles north-northeast), the Porcupine Wilderness State Park (25 miles northeast), the Gogebic-Penokee Range (to the south) and downhill ski area. Fall color, as viewed from Copper Peak, can contend with any place in the world. It usually peaks around the last week in September and/or the first week in October, when the chairlift is most often ridden. Copper Peak is a registered Michigan historic site and a member of the Western Upper Peninsula Heritage Trail Network. The network contains some 70 of the most scenic and historic sites in the western counties of the Upper Peninsula. Festivale Italiano is set for Saturday, Sept. 3 on Silver Street in downtown Hurley and features plenty of good food and musical entertainment. During the day a craft fair and flea market are scheduled as well as a performance by Marty’s Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps and other live music, including the winner of the Silver Street Music Festival that will be held during the Paavo Nurmi Marathon. The event features food booths, kids’ games, the popular 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a spaghetti-eating contest and demonstrations by the Hurley Fire Department. BLACK RIVER HARBOR
Located on Lake Superior 15 miles north of Bessemer is Black River Harbor and Recreation Area. The area is the only Great Lakes harbor run by the U.S. Forest Service. It has many scenic hiking trails that lead nature lovers from the harbor, near the lake or through hardwood forests. PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Porcupine Mountain Music Festival in 2015 drew 1,400 music lovers to the only such festival held in the Porcupine Mountain State Wilderness Park, just west of Ontonagon. The festival grows each year and festival supporters hope to break the 1,500 mark this year. The event is planned for Aug. 26-28 when about 25 acts from all over the country perform on two outdoor stages and one indoor Busking Barn stage. Sheryl Sundberg, festival chairman, said over 100 volunteers yearly work the festival. Duties include ticket Page 22 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
taking, parking, first aid, transportation, artist hospitality, stage management and security. “Last year, the Boy Scouts did recycling and it kept the area clean and earned the Scouts some money from can returns,” she said. The music festival committee is still in the process of selecting more music groups but has announced the headliners for the first two nights. Friday night’s headline group will be Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band from Brown County, Indiana. On Saturday, it will be Papa Mali, a New Orleansbased band.
Back-to-back music Friday and Saturday begins at 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Food concessions will be available throughout the weekend at the ski chalet. Sundberg said golf carts carry patrons back and forth to the various stages. Tickets are discounted until May 31 when they go on the regular price of $90 for three days and $35 for single days. Wakefield is well-known for its Fourth of July celebration, which is just part of a summer full of fun activities. MINERS TRAIL
Miners Memorial Heritage Park is dedicated to the many folks who spent countless hours working underground within the mining areas of Ironwood. The creation of these mines resulted in the establishment of Ironwood in the latter 19th century, with the last iron ore mine closing in 1966. The park and trail offer fourseason exercise and recreational venues for all to enjoy through its 2.6 miles of trails for walking, hiking, biking, or snowshoeing and skiing in the winter months. The trail winds through 167 acres of rustic area in the center of the city that were former iron

ore mining locations, known locally as the caves area. The park is owned by the city of Ironwood and managed by Friends of the Miners Memorial Park, which was created to promote, maintain and improve the park. The Ironwood City Commission established the park in July 2010 at the request of FMMHP. Hikes are often hosted during the spring and summer beginning at Lorenson Field on Ayer Street in Ironwood. MINERS MURAL
Miners Mural, located on the 100 block of East McLeod Avenue in downtown Ironwood, honors the miners who worked on the Gogebic Iron Range in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula. The mural, which took three and a half years to complete, was finished in 2012. A book listing the names of the 111 miners painted on the mural is for sale at Northwoods Cabin and Downtown City News, both located just blocks from the mural in Ironwood. CAMPING
The Gogebic Range is home to many camping destinations. The Ottawa National Forest provides a variety of camping opportunities, including campground camping, wilderness camping and dispersed camping. There are 22 campgrounds within the Ottawa National Forest, which offer a wide spectrum of camping experiences. All are accessible by road and most service both tent and trailer campers. Most are located near lakes or streams and offer some fishing opportunities. Some campgrounds include picnic tables, tent pads, fire grates and toilet facilities. Some have drinking water and can accommodate campers between 45-60 feet in length. In Ironwood, Curry Park campground located on U.S 2 with easy access to restaurants and shopping area. The area offers RV parking and tenting and is located next to the Gogebic County Fairgrounds. In Wakefield, Sunday Lake is a popular spot for swimming, picnics and camping. Eddy Park Campground is opened from Memorial Day weekend to the end of September. Eddy Park has two pavilions available to rent for your next gathering. On the west side of Lake Gogebic, Lake Gogebic State Park offers over a mile of lake frontage with 127 campsites and 200 picnic sites. There is drinking water, a sandy beach boat launch, fishing, flush toilets, a shower building, a sanitation station, electric hook-ups, a playground, a picnic shelter and a hiking interpretive trail. In Iron County, the Iron County Forestry Department operates Saxon Harbor campground and marina, Lake of the Falls campground, Schomberg Park campground and Weber Lake campground. Camping is allowed anywhere on the County Forest for up to two weeks, including established rustic campsites at Potato River Falls, Wren Falls, Foster Falls, Shay’s Dam and Spider Lake. The Turtle Flambeau Flowage Scenic Wilderness Waters Area is a nature lover’s vacation destination. There are 195 islands and six boat Page 28 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
landings on nearly 19,000 acres of water, a result of 1926 dam construction to create a reservoir in southern Iron County. There are 66, non-reservable remote campsites that are accessible only by water, but there is also 35,500 acres of land to be explored. There are also six reservable campsites. The flowage offers five distinct trails stretching nearly 250 miles that are perfect for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing and hunting. The five trails are Big Island Trail, Deadhorse Trail, Little Turtle Trail, Wilson Hills Trail and Hidden Rivers Nature Trail, which is wheelchair friendly. The Flambeau Flowage is known for its abundant wildlife, including eagles, deer, bear, timber wolves and moose. The flowage has a number of underwater stumps and driftwood that make for an excellent fishing environment. Fishermen beware — muskies more than 50 pounds have been caught along the flowage, but the area is best known for its abundant walleye population. There are also smallmouth and largemouth bass, crappie, perch and bluegill. Find all of these attractions and much more just a short distance from

Located 7 miles east of Watersmeet is 18,327 acres of camping, fishing, hiking and canoeing called the Sylvania Wilderness and Recreational Area. There are 34 named lakes in an oldgrowth forest with a wide range of wildlife, including several species of threatened and endangered plants and animals. Camping is by permit only at either the 50 wilderness camp sites or the 48 sites at the Clark Lake campground, which is accessible by automobile. To obtain a permit, visit the Sylvania Entrance Station or call 877-444-6777. Campsites are limited to six people. No cans, bottles, styrofoam or nonburnable food or beverage containers are allowed. Containers of fuel, insect repellant, medications, toiletries and reusable plastic containers are permitted. No bicycles are allowed. Dogs are only permitted if on a 6-foot leash and are not allowed at the Clark Lake beach.

ONTONAGON COUNTY FAIR
Cheesecake, horses, crafts, kids and antique engines all combine to make the Ontonagon County Fair a treat for all segments of the population in Ontonagon County, July 30-31. The fair is held at Adventure Mountain in Greenland and begins for the public on Saturday, July 30, with a lumberjack breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. The breakfast is sponsored by the Michigan/Wisconsin Antique Power Association. Races will have a chance to stretch their legs at the Aspirus one-mile and
5K run which begins at 9 a.m. with registration starting one hour earlier at 8 a.m. Throughout the day the antique engine display is available, along with an exhibit building of crafts, children’s games, bounce houses, venders and food concessions. A mock 4-H rodeo begins at 6 p.m. Early exhibit registration is available Thursday, July 29, and Friday, July 30. This year exhibits of ducks and chickens return along with livestock. Youth and adults will vie for the best
of show in animals and craft items. Saturday events include: 9 a.m. exhibit building opens, 10 a.m. livestock, rabbit and dog agility judging, noon, cheesecake judging, and king of the chair saw competition Sunday begins with a continental breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Registration for the horse show games starts at 9 a.m., with the show at 10. The exhibit building opens at 10. There will be a petting zoo and the awards ceremony begins at 3 p.m. Exhibits will be released from 4 to 6 p.m.
ONTONAGON COUNTY LABOR FESTIVAL
The Ontonagon Labor Festival Committee is already making plans for the annual event which draws thousands of people to the Ontonagon area for four days of activities. The 60th annual celebration will be held Sept. 2-5. The first event was held in 1957. This year’s celebration kicks off with a free community picnic and includes dances, auto show, sales on the streets, parades, rock skipping and lip sync contests. The committee hopes to bring a carnival to the area this year and other new features are being looked at for the 60th celebration. The highlight of the four days is the Festival Parade on Sunday, Sept. 4. In addition to prize winning floats, the parade features more bands than any other in the U.P. LITTLE GIRL’S POINT
Campers and single-day visitors alike find a lot to enjoy at the Little Girl’s Point campgrounds on the shores of Lake Superior. There are around 31 recreational vehicle sites and 31 tent sites at the Gogebic County Park on County Road 505, about 18 miles north of Ironwood and 11 miles from the U.S. 2 intersection at Saxon, Wis. The campgrounds opens in May and closes around the end of September. There are daily, and monthly rates for camping.
There are restrooms and there’s a boat ramp at Oman’s Creek. Swimming the cool waters of Lake Superior and agate picking are two favorite summer activities for all ages. Iron County celebrates its heritage with a big bash, featuring over two weeks of events, including parties, golf outings, a marathon and a county fair. The Iron County Heritage Festival kicks of July 24 with Little Finland’s Viola Turpeinen Dance. The popular Hurley Quarterback Club’s Scramble and Golf Tournament at Eagle Bluff, featuring 75 two-person team on Friday, July 29. Also on Friday, the Iron County Historical Society has its Heritage Day open house. ABUNDANT WATERFALLS
The many rivers in the area form an abundance of waterfalls that can be appreciated by hikers. Some of the hikes travel just a short distance from paved parking lots while other treks are a little deeper into the Michigan
Black River National Forest Scenic Byway: Sightseers can spend an entire afternoon stopping at the five major falls along the Black River. The falls all have a short walking distance from each of their parking areas. The first is Great Conglomerate Falls, with a 3/4-mile walk, the farthest walk of any of the falls. To get there, head north for about 3 miles along Powderhorn Road off of U.S. 2 near Bessemer. Take a left onto Black River Road and follow for it about 10 miles. There will be signs marking the waterfalls. The next falls, Potawatomi Falls, are 30 feet high. The falls are a short walk away from Gorge Falls, which have a 34-foot drop. Sandstone Falls are 15 feet high and Rainbow Falls are 30 feet. Agate Falls: These 40-feet high falls are part of the middle branch of the Ontonagon River. They are located about 6.5 miles east of Bruce Crossing along M-28. Bond Falls: The 40-foot falls are fed by the middle branch of the Ontonagon River and Bond Flowage, located east of U.S. 45 from Paulding on Bond Falls Road. Bond Falls are more than 100 feet wide and are a Michigan State Scenic Site. Gabbro Falls: The 40-feet high falls are located on the Black River near Ramsay. To get there, head north on Blackjack Road from U.S. 2 for about 1.6 miles, then take a left over a wooden covered bridge. Stay left for about 1/2 mile and find the falls to the east. O Kun-de-Kun Falls: Located on the Baltimore River, these 25-feet high falls are one of the wilder falls that require a bit of hiking to visit. One of the only few plunge falls in Michigan, daredevils can actually go behind the falls but must be careful. The trailhead to the falls is about 8 miles north of Bruce Crossing on U.S. 45. Presque Isle Falls: There are several falls located within Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park along the Presque Isle River. From Wakefield, travel east along M-28 to County Road 519. Follow that road north until you pass South Boundary Road, heading into the park and to a trail to visit the falls.

Take U.S. 2 west of Hurley, turn south on Park Road and west on Town Park Drive. Potato River Falls: The falls are a monstrous 90 feet high, located on the Potato River in Gurney. Take U.S. 2 to Wisconsin 169 and turn south. Continue for 2.8 miles through Gurney, then turn right on Potato River Falls Road. Travel 1.5 miles until you can’t drive any farther. Rustic picnic campsites are available. Spring Camp Falls: The 20-feet high
falls are along the west branch of the Montreal River, south of Hurley, and are also known as the Montreal Falls. From Hurley, take U.S. 51 south for 4.7 miles and turn right onto County C. Follow that for 1.5 miles and continue left on Island Lake Road for about 2.7 miles. Take a right on Falls Road and drive for 1.3 miles. The destination will be on the right. the Tyler Forks River, Wren Falls are 30 feet high. Take U.S. 2 15 miles west of Hurley and turn left on Wisconsin 169. Travel about 5.7 miles and turn left on Vogues Road. Stay on there for about 3.5 miles. At the hairpin turn, take the center road across. One mile down the road, stay to the right at the fork and continue a few hundred yards. When leaving, take a right onto Sullivan Fire Lane. Upson Falls: From Upson travel west on Wisconsin 77, then take a right on Park Road. The signs will guide you to the Upson Town Park where you can view the 18-foot high falls.

Saxon Falls: These 110-foot falls are located on the Montreal River. Drive west on U.S. 2 from Ironwood for about 10.5 miles, entering Wisconsin. Make a right turn onto County B and follow 2.4 miles, then continue on Saxon Falls Road for another 1/2 mile. Superior Falls: At 90 feet high, the falls are fed by the Montreal River near Lake Superior. To get there take Wisconsin 122, turning north off of U.S. 2, near Saxon. Stay on 122 for 4.2 miles, crossing the Wisconsin-Michigan border. Continue another 1/2 mile, then turn left on a gravel road marked by Xcel Energy. Peterson Falls: Located on the east branch of the Montreal River in the Hurley area is Peterson Falls. Take U.S. 2 west from Hurley for .6 mile and turn north on Center Drive. Follow the gravel road east for .3 mile; do not take any side roads. Park at the small turnaround and follow the foot path on the north side of parking area to the east. It’s about a 1/4-mile walk to falls. The larger Interstate Falls are about 1/4-mile down stream to the north.

SAXON HARBOR
The first week in June will mark the 25th annual Saxon Harbor Spring Classic fishing tournament, where the top trout and salmon will bring in prize money. The tourney is scheduled for June 4-5, with the seventh annual women’s Powderpuff competition set for Friday, June 3. Big and small boat classes will compete both Saturday and Sunday, with around 200 people expected out on the trolling boats. For information on registration, visit the online Saxon Harbor Boating Club site. There are 90 boat slips for seasonal rental and numerous transient slips available at the harbor. Water and electricity are available to boaters, as well pump-out and gasoline facilities. There are also showers and a fish cleaning station building. The Saxon Harbor campground has 32 electrical sites
and 11 tent sites, including five rustic walk-in sites on picturesque Parkers Creek and five lakeside tent sites. All sites have fire pits and picnic tables. There’s a picturesque wood bridge over Oronto Creek that leads to the rustic campsites along Parkers Creek. Sandy swimming beaches are a short walk from the campgrounds. Kids enjoy climbing the the sand banks along the shoreline. Day use parking is allowed for a fee. Seasonal park stickers are also available. Reservations can be made by contacting the Iron County Forestry Department at 715-561-2697 or Saxon Harbor Boating Club at 715-893-2242. Boat slip rates vary, based on both lengths and slip positions. All pets must be leashed at all times and fireworks are not allowed.
The expansive Gile (Wis.) Flowage offers a variety of fishing opportunities, but walleyes and monster muskies are the prime species. There are four boat landings on the Montreal River Flowage, controlled by Xcel Energy. Landings in Gile and on County C offer ample space for parking boat trailers and also shore fishing opportunities. The 3,138-acre flowage has a maximum depth of 25 about feet, but that’s deep enough to hold a large population
of walleyes. Walleyes inhabit shallow water after spawning in the spring and tend to move deeper during the summer months. They can readily be caught from shore in spring on bait or with artificial lures, like Rapalas. There’s also an abundant population of smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskies and panfish, like crappies. Winter fishing has become as popular on the flowage as summer angling, and tents spring up across the ice during coldwater months.

PAAVO NURMI MARATHON
The second Saturday of every August, runners converge on Iron County, Wis. The 48th Paavo Nurmi Marathon, Wisconsin’s oldest marathon, is set for Saturday, Aug. 13. The race offers a rare mid-summer marathon and is well-supported by hundreds of volunteers and spectators along its scenic course. The Paavo starts at 7:30 a.m. in Upson, Wis., and travels through the hills of Iron County to its eventual finish on Silver Street in downtown Hurley. starts in Gile, Wis., at 8 a.m. and also finishes in downtown Hurley. The marathon continues to offer twoperson and five-person relay events. The Paavo also continues to be a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Ben Schneider of Minneapolis has won 10 straight Paavo Nurmi Marathons. His wife, Candice, won the women’s full-marathon the past five years. Aid stations are available throughout the course. They are staffed by the Paavo’s large volunteer crew that comes back year after year.

Assembled in 1950, the Marty’s Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps is a parade and concert corps which performs primarily in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. MUSEUMS OF HISTORY
There are several museums in the area including two in Ironwood, one in Hurley, one in Bessemer, one in Wakefield and another in Ontonagon. These museums preserve local history and culture in the form of photographs, equipment and other artifacts. In Ironwood, the Old Depot Park Museum is located downtown between Lowell and Suffolk streets. Constructed in 1892 as a railway depot, it is over 100 years old. It houses a museum, featuring iron mining displays and other railroad memorabilia, and the Ironwood Historical Society research center. For more information, call 906-932-0287. The Ironwood Chamber of Commerce also has it office in the old depot. The Ironwood Memorial Building houses all of the municipal offices, a 1,500-seat auditorium and many historical displays, including a statue of a World War I doughboy and numerous bronze tablets listing local men who served during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I. Located at 202 Iron St. in Hurley, the Iron County Historical Society Museum opened in 1971 in the former Iron County Courthouse. It displays artifacts on the history of local mining and logging communities. It is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until October. OTTAWA NATIONAL FOREST
Nearly 1 million acres of the Ottawa National Forest are located in the Upper Peninsula. The forest extends from the south shore of Lake Superior to the Wisconsin border. The forest boasts a spectacular view of rolling hills, rivers, lakes and waterfalls, not to mention hundreds of species of wildlife. It includes three wilderness areas: Sylvania Wilderness Area, McCormick Wilderness Area and Sturgeon River Gorge Area. The forest encourages such recreational activities such as hunting, camping, horse-riding, fishing and hiking. Canoeing and kayaking are also encouraged on its over 500 named lakes and nearly 2,000 miles of rivers and streams. It also includes 196 miles of hiking and backpacking trails, which are perfect for any nature walk. The Ottawa Visitor Center, located east of the U.S. 2 and U.S. 45 intersection in Watersmeet, has been open to the public since 1971. It offers environmental education programs, maps, area information, interpretive exhibits, accessible trails and an Ottawa Interpretive Association sales outlet. PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS STATE PARK
Summer is a busy time for visitors in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Yearly from 250,000 to 300,000 visitors camp, hike, sightsee, fish, ski and enjoy the wonder of one of the few remaining large wilderness areas in the midwest. The many waterfalls in the park continue to draw people to the 60,000 acre park which covers 92 square miles. Bob Wild is the Park Interpreter and helps to conduct weekly programs on the type of things people can see in the park. Throughout the summer, those events include programs on Astronomy, Archery, Agate Hunting, Fire by Friction, and Wilderness Navagation. There will be Bear den hikes and on May 28 Birds of Prey at the Visitors Center. The Visitors Center is the place where visitors can find out more what is going on in the park so they can take advantage of the many programs. Wild suggests that all new comers to the park and even regulars stop at the Center first because the orientation can make the trip more meaningful. “We are more than the famous Lake of the Clouds,” he added. While a trip to the Lake of the Clouds is a photographers paradise, he cautions that the visitor will miss the entire experience of the Wilderness Park unless they participate in other activities. A stop at the Visitors Center can quickly change what would have been a several hour stop to several days of meaningful experience. Programs are held during the day but also in the evening at the Park. Wild suggests that those planning to camp in the park and need back pack reservations, check out the web site at the Porkies because reservations can be made on line and there are other changes in procedures as well.

Weekly Fat Tire bike rides are held regionally throughout the summer. The rides begin at 6 p.m. All biking ability levels are welcome, from complete newbies to those who have been riding for years. Rides are scheduled to be held on a variety of trails, offering a range of terrains and lengths, with riders usually able to pick between long or short trips. GOLF COURSES
Golfing the courses on the Gogebic Range is an excellent way to spend a summer day. From the panoramic views from the Skye course on Whitecap Mountains near Iron Belt to the 18 holes at the Lac Vieux Desert Casino in Watersmeet, there are plenty of treelined challenges for golfers of all levels. The Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood (906-932-2525) offers 18 holes on a mostly flat layout, with plenty of interesting holes that offer a variety of options. Perhaps the signature hole is the dogleg par four No. 14, guarded by deep bunkers on both sides. A steeply sloped green adds to the challenge. The long par 5 finishing hole, with a green that can be viewed from the dining area of the clubhouse, is another favorite. At the Eagle Bluff Golf Club in Hurley (715-561-3552), the sloped greens are a challenge and the back nine can be brutal under windy conditions. holes that present birdie opportunities following accurate drives. The toughest hole is the par four No. 11, which doglegs right. It takes a healthy drive to get a look at the green and keeping the ball in play off the tee can be tough. Five is a good score on the 420-yard hole. Watersmeet’s Lac Vieux Desert (906-358-0303) course, with its blue grass fairways, is right next to the casino. The back nine is as challenging as any course in the area. Tahoe Lynx near Mercer (715-476-0050), offers nine holes in a wooded setting. Skye Golf Course (715-561-2227) offers bent grass fairways on a mountaintop course. Other courses include the Chequamegon Bay in Ashland (715-682-8004); the Ontonagon Golf Club (906-884-4130), the Gateway Golf Club in Land O’Lakes (715-547-3929), and the Mellen Country Club (715-274-7311).

Joe’s definition: pasty (pas´te) - lean ground beef, diced potatoes and onions, wrapped in a delicate crust.

History of the Pasty The pasty originated in Cornwall, England. During the Upper Michigan iron ore boom, Cornish miners, known as “cousin jacks,” and their wives, “cousin jennies,” are given credit for bringing pasties to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore miners, who spent many long hours underground, would eat the pasty for lunch. The pasty was a convenient meal and could be transported within the miner’s pocket. The Barbera family has been serving “the best” pasty since 1946 in Ironwood, Michigan. Yes, that makes us Yoopers! People from all over the U.S. have enjoyed Joe’s pasties. If you have never tasted a pasty, try them now at Joe’s where the original is still made!
