Bessemer 4th of July The Fourth of July celebation in Bessemer starts June 27. It is on June 27 that Bessemer hosts its kick off event for 10 years running with the Tree of Honor celebration at the downtown Pocket Park on Sophie Street, to honor veterans past and present. The 50/50 raffle tickets become available and Poker Runs start, with a different winning hand nightly. July 1 The day kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with the 29th annual Bessemer Hometown Walk-Run and eighth annual Tot Trot, beginning and ending at City Hall. The walk-run includes 10K and 2-mile routes. Late registration continues from 7 to 8 a.m. Page 6 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
At 11 a.m., there will be an event at the Ethnic Commons recognising the area’s mining heritage. The day also includes the always popular Dominos fall at the A.D. Johnston High School gym. While it only takes minutes for all the domino's to fall, it takes many hours to set up and arrange. First in Flight Entertainment returns with their “Tribute to Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra.” Two different performances, one at 1 p.m., and another at 6 p.m., will be held at Massie Field, using the high school as a back up in the event of rain. July 2 The third annual 3-on-3 hoops tourney goes off. Kids as young as 6 can
participate, all the way up to adults. There are female and male divisions and lots of teams turn out for this signature event. Kids Day downtown includes a chalk drawing station for youngsters to draw right on Main Street. There is also an outdoor children's dance for sixth grade and below children. There will also be a War card game tournament and water balloon toss. July 3 The Bessemer High School band will march down main street practicing for the big parade. Following the band there will be a game of Simon Says Continued on page 9

Riding Dirty
The 32nd annual Memorial Day ATV / UTV Rally kicks off Thursday, May 25, and continues through Sunday, May 28. Highlighting Iron County’s 200-plus miles of ATV/ UTV trails, the annual event is known for what organizers call, “the Largest ATV / UTV Parade in the North.” A weekend full of activity, the poker run begins at noon on Thursday. Participating businesses will offer specials all weekend long. Those who wish to participate in the poker run can pick up their packet at the Hurley Chamber beginning at noon on Thursday, May 25.
The Hurley Area Chamber of Commerce will host the parade line-up at a site located about 2 miles west of Hurley on Trail 77 where DJ music, vendors, food and beverages will begin at 3 p.m., Friday, May 26. Parade kick off time is 7 p.m. Another fun aspect of the weekend is the annual Selfie Contest. Sponsored by the chamber, participants are given a list of locations throughout the area to visit and take a selfie. Submitted photos are entered to win a four-pack of Milwaukee Brewers tickets.
This year's rally will feature a new event — a scavenger hunt. Don’t miss the infamous Mud Pit on Sunday. Sponsored annually by the Hurley Fire Department, the pit challenges riders to make it through the mud with the fastest time in their category. Registration begins at noon, with racing at 1 p.m. DJ music, food, beverages and raffles add to the excitement. Everyone is welcome to participate in the weekend of activities. A bean bag tournament and the Derrick Brown Memorial Sling Shot 3-person water balloon launch, will give people the chance to pelt a themed attraction down range with a water balloon. Later, a street dance music will be provided by Lake Effect. July 4 The actual holiday begins at 6 a.m. with Poncho's Memorial Salute, issuing a wake-up call to Bessemer and surrounding communities to commence celebrating. At 9:30 a.m., Massie Field will host family games and races, followed by a Children's Parade at 1:30 p.m. The Bessemer Volunteer Fire Department will have an open house with free hot dogs and soda during this time. At approximately 6:45 p.m., the Memory Lane Car Cruisers will drive the parade route, making sure it is clear and people are ready, because at 7 p.m., the giant parade follows along Galena, Moore, Colby, Sophie and Silver streets. The judges’ platform will be at the corner of Sophie and Mary streets. The winning 50/50 numbers will be on the final float, as 50/50 sales as the parade begins. Marty's Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps will offer a concert at Massie Field around 9 p.m. at Massie Field. At 10 p.m., the Thunder on the Mountain fireworks show is displayed off the bluff. Festival Ironwood
Festival Ironwood returns for four days of fun and reunions at Depot Park July 19-22. Held every year at Depot Park, thousands of people gather to enjoy the food, crafts, music, car shows and a good time. The developments at the park in recent years, including the development of the Iron Belle Trail, a new kiddies' playground and volleyball courts, have added to the attractions of the summer celebration. Plans for the festival, Ironwood's major summer event, are carried on throughout the year. In addition to a wide range of musical entertainment, the Page 10 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide
festival features games for the kiddies and adults alike. The World's Largest Duck Pick is an annual event . Crafts shows, volleyball, pool, poker, a teen dance and antique autos from the Klassic Kruisers show are other events that take place at Depot Park, but not all of the activities take place there. The Miners Memorial Heritage Park, Downtown Art Place and churches also schedule events to coordinate with a weekend that many former Ironwood residents mark on their calendars for a visit. Iron County Fair
Fun in the Sun The Iron County Fair in Saxon, Wis., returns for its 90th edition Aug. 3-6. Billed as a “good old county fair,” there are activities and exhibits for all ages, from carnival rides and a mud run to a pie auction Sunday afternoon. The fair will again be a part of the Iron County Heritage Festival, which packages many events under one umbrella in late July and August. that is reflected in an antique tractor show that is a highlight of Sunday’s event. The Red Clay Classic Mud Run on Saturday afternoon draws competitors from throughout northern Wisconsin and the Sunday old-fashioned horse pulling contest is a priority for many fair-goers. A livestock auction, 4-H horse shows and plenty of musical entertainment
are offered. This year’s fair will also feature a rodeo, held in the fair’s horse arena Saturday afternoon. Food booths and refreshments are also available. To get to the fair from Ironwood or Hurley, take U.S. 2 west to Saxon, then turn left at either the County Trunk B intersection or the Wisconsin 122 intersection.

Gogebic County Fair The Gogebic County Fair's 96th annual celebration of summer is scheduled for Aug. 24-27. Organizers of the fair are working on booking entertainment and more information will be available at gogebiccountyfair.com, or 906-663-4045. The fairgrounds are off Cloverland Drive on the west end of Ironwood.

For 2017, a season's pass will again cost $30, or attendees may pay the single day rates of $12, except for Thursday, when the cost is $10. Passes obtained at the gate allow fair-goers to attend all of the entertainment acts for free and also offer free carnival rides. Each year, the fair board works hard
to find new and exciting entertainment, while also keeping long-time traditions, like harness racing, and other popular events on the schedule. A large and dedicated group of volunteers continues to make the annual fair a success and people interesting in helping out may complete a form on the fair's website.

Copper Peak Adventure Ride Copper Peak's Adventure Ride offers a view for miles from Ironwood Township. It involves an 800-foot chairlift ride to the top of the hill, and an 18-story elevator ride to the main observation deck near the top of the world’s largest ski flying platform. From the main observation deck, or from the very top of the ski structure, one can overlook more than 2,500 square miles of the Lake Superior basin and see a flyer’s perspective of what it takes physically and mentally to strap on a pair of eight-foot skis, accelerate to 65 mph down the 469foot inrun, and with a leap of faith, soar more than 600 feet down to the bottom of the hill. The view from atop Copper Peak is untainted by development. On a clear day it is possible to see 85 miles across Lake Superior to northern Minnesota near the Canadian border. Observe historic landmarks such as the Apostle Islands

(40 miles to the northwest), Isle Royale (80 miles northnortheast), the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (25 miles northeast), and the Gogebic-Penokee Range and downshill ski areas (to the south). Fall color, as viewed from Copper Peak, can contend with any place in the world. It usually peaks around the last week in September and/or the first week in October, when the chairlift is most often ridden. Copper Peak is a registered Michigan historic site and a member of the Western Upper Peninsula Heritage Trail Network. The network contains some 70 of the most scenic and historic sites in the western counties of the Upper Peninsula. Copper Peak is located 10 miles north of Bessemer on Black River Road (County Road 513). The adventure ride is open daily from mid-June to Labor Day. Porcupine Mountains Music Festival
Three stages, 19 acts and a beautiful setting, mark the scene for the annual Porcupine Mountain Music Festival, Aug. 25-27. Sheryl Olson is the director of the music fest which last year drew 1,300 people to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park for the threeday event. The festival is a big draw and visitors from throughout the Mid-

west have become regular patrons. Olson said the headliner for this year will be the David Bromberg Quintet, which will appear on Saturday. Among the performers on Sunday will be Steel Wheels from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. “They appeared at the festival in 2014 and wowed the crowds,” Olson said. Another act expected to be a big
draw is Laney Jones and Spirits out of Nashville. The festival has received a grant of $21,000 from the Michigan Council of Arts and Cultural Affairs and organizers have raised money throughout the year to help fund the popular event. Wakefield 4th of July Wakefield is well-known for its Fourth of July celebration, which is just a part of a summer full of fun activities. The Wakefield Fireworks Committee has planned the annual Picnic in the Park for July 3 at noon at Eddy Park followed by the “Lightning on the Lake” fireworks display on Sunday Lake at

naires Drum and Bugle Corps. Summer is a great time to be in Wakefield, especially with the beautiful natural setting of Sunday Lake, according to chamber officials. The pristine Eddy Park and Sunday Lake campground will be open from Memorial Day weekend until the end of September.

Miners Memorial Heritage Park / Trail A master plan for Miners Memorial Heritage Park in Ironwood is being developed. The park covers much of the city and has the potential for a variety of recreational usages. The Gogebic Range Trail Authority is interested in continuing to work with the Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park on trails in the park. The MMHP board would like to develop a dog park on the corner of Bonnie and Ayer Streets. A total of 63 pages of the Ironwood Comprehensive Plan deal with the Miners park and how it fits into Ironwood’s future.

Art in the Miners Park 2017 will again be an outdoor/public art exhibition on a one-mile walking loop in in MMHP. It opens June 24. Last year, Art in the Miners Park hosted around 2,000 visitors and awarded $2,500 in prizes. This year, plans call for add a Juried Award to the popular People’s Choice award. Family and environmentally friendly art, original art or inspired art with permission that is able to withstand weeks of outdoor weather is encouraged. Iron Belle Trail The Iron Belle Trail is an ongoing and exciting new development in the area and across the state. It is a set of two trails that are planned to run throughout the state of Michigan from Ironwood to Belle Isle Park in Detroit. It is considered to be the longest designated state trail system in the nation. One trail is for hiking and the other for biking and other non-motorized use. The two scenic trails wind along the
beautiful Northwoods landscape along rivers and other natural landmarks. Locally, the Western Gateway Trail Authority has been instrumental in building a paved trail from Ironwood to Bessemer, along a former railroad grade. The pave trail crosses many bridges and reaches into Hurley on the western end. Plans are being made to extend this trail from Bessemer to Ramsay, and then again to Wakefield.
The North Country Trail along the Black River in northern Gogebic County and over to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park has been designated as part of the Iron Belle hiking trail. It is anticipated that the expansion will continue in years to come with a potential for connection with the Northern Highlands Regional Non-motorized Trail which begins in Mercer, Wis.
Camping The Ottawa National Forest has 22 campgrounds encapsulating a wide range of camping experiences. Each campsite is accessible by road and service tent and camper bush living. A nightly fee is charged at most campsites, ranging from $12-16. Several campsites do provide free camping. Most campgrounds are opened by the Friday before Memorial Day and most close after Labor Day, although a handful remain open into the fall leaf season. Most campsites are located on streams or lakes and offer fishing opportunities. Additionally most managed campgrounds also include picnic tables, tent pads, fire grates, and toilet facilities. Some of the locations have drinking water available and can accommodate camping units from 45-60 feet in length. Camping in the Ottawa is on a first-come first-served basis with few exceptions. The most developed campsites in the Ottawa are located at Clark Lake and Black River Harbor areas with paved access, pressurized water systems, flush toilets and a trailer dump station. persed site for 24 hours or more. Dispersed campsites will allow camping for 16 days at the same location. After 16 days the camper is required to pack up and relocate to another site at least five miles away. Forty percent of the land within the Ottawa is privately owned. Three specific areas of the Ottawa are made available for those looking for more solitude, quiet and time to think. —The Sylvania Wilderness Area, which is 18,327 acres of wilderness located on the Watersmeet Ranger District only accommodates foot and canoe travel. Camping is available by permit only. —The McCormick Wilderness Area is 16,850 acres of wilderness in the Kenton Ranger District, ranging from rocky cliffs to outcrops. Access to the McCormick is primarily by foot. There are canoe opportunities for those portaging. —The Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness is 14,139 acres of wilderness in the Kenton Ranger District with deep gorges. Ontonagon County Fourth of July The Independence Day celebrations in Ontonagon County will be held July 1 in Bruce Crossing, White Pine and Greenland with parades, food, music and fireworks. BRUCE CROSSING: The theme for the Bruce Crossing Fourth of July celebration is “We the People.” It is the celebration of America’s Independence but also the 100 anniversary of Settlers Co-Op in Bruce Crossing and the 100 year anniversary of Finland’s independence. Vicki Kurtti of the 4th of July Committee said those anniversaries will probably be reflected in some of the floats for the big parade Saturday, July 1. The parade will also feature bands, groups and children. The morning will begin with a fun walk-run, VFW breakfast and the annual
Lions Chicken dinner. The parade ends up at the Stannard Township Park where there will be horseshoe tournament, tracker and car show, music and other activities still being developed. The evening concludes with a giant fireworks show. WHITE PINE The highlight of the celebration of Independence Day in White Pine is the annual parade. A big kiddies parade is traditional as well as a number of floats. The parade ends at the Recreation Building where other activities are held. Bingo, music and food are featured. In the evening the action switches to the Konteka for a beautiful fireworks show. Lindy Moen at the Kontika is coordinating the July 1 activities for Independence Day.
GREENLAND The 10th annual Independence Day celebration in Greenland has grown larger every year and organizers expect this year, Saturday, July 1, will also include new features. Most of the activities are centered at and around the Log Cabin at the Greenland Park. The morning begins with a walk and run for adults and children. Kickball, corn hole games, 3-on-3 basketball and other games are being developed. Organizers said there will be music all day, food venders, craft venders and other activities under consideration. The popular street dance returns and dusk will see a bigger fireworks display than in previous years. The 4th of July Committee has sponsored several fundraisers throughout the year to sponsor a growing presence on the holiday.

County Fair Planning is well under way for the Ontonagon County Fair July 29-30 at Adventure Mountain Complex in Greenland. Organizers are still adding features to the schedule, but many of the most popular events are automatic returns. The fair activity starts with the 1-mile and 5-K runs, sponsored by Aspirus On-
61st annual Labor Festival The 61st annual edition of the Ontonagon Labor Festival Celebration will be held Sept. 1-4 with four days of parades, races, sales on the street, car show and other activities. Little Girl’s Point Little Girl’s Point Park, established as a recreational facility by Gogebic County in 1920, is on Lake Road in Ironwood, Township along the beautiful shoreline of Lake Superior. There are 29 electric (30 amp power), and two non-electric campsites available for nightly or monthly reservations at the county park. Little Girl’s Point County Campground features breathtaking views of Lake Superior, as well as two pavilions with grills and picnic tables, walking trails and recently updated playground equipment. Within the park boundaries, the mouth of Oman’s Creek offers boating access.
Camping, swimming, fishing, rock hounding, boating and sightseeing are all ways to enjoy Lake Superior and Little Girl’s Point County Park. On most days, Copper Peak and the Porcupine Mountains are clearly visible to the west and the Apostle Islands are visible to the northwest. Sunsets are spectacular during the camping season and during the off season winter months there are often massive ice formations along the shore of the beach. Iron County Heritage Festival Iron County celebrates its heritage with a big bash — featuring over two weeks of events, including parties, golf outings, a marathon and a county fair. The Iron County Heritage Festival kicks of July 28 with an open house at the Highline Corporation on Wisconsin 77 in Hurley, The Iron County Historical Society's Heritage Day and the popular Hurley Quarterback Club’s Scramble and Golf Tournament at Eagle Bluff. Friday, July 28, is also the first day of the weekend-long Northwoods Art Tour throughout various locations in the Mercer area. Saturday is a big day for the festival, featuring the sixth annual Iron County All Class All School Reunion, the Iron County Heritage Festival Parade, Farm Heritage Day and Antique Tractor Show at the Iron County Farmers Market and the Mercer Education Foundation's Summer Mardi Gras fundraiser. July's events end with St. Mary's Catholic Church bazaar. The event features food, beverages, kids’ games, bingo and more fun activities. For more information call the church office at 715-561-2606. Before Loon Day street dance on Aug. 1 and the 37th annual Mercer Loon Day and Craftshow the next day. The Iron County Fair runs from Aug. 3-6. On the south end of the county, the Mercer Library will hold a Friends of the Library book sale Friday, Aug. 4. Everyone will then head down to Rugger's Landing the next day for the Turtle River Duck Race at 11 a.m. The festival then ends with the annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon on Saturday, Aug. 12. That Friday evening at the Hurley K-12 School will be registration/packet pick-up from 3 to 7 p.m. Also that evening will be the kids run at 6 p.m. and Glow Run from 7 to 9 p.m. The torch lighting ceremony will be held in downtown Hurley at the start of the Iron Horse Trailhead. Music starts at 7:30 p.m. Races start Saturday morning with the full marathon kicking off in Upson at 7:30 a.m. The Iron County Farmers Market will join the fun that same day with its Summer Sisu celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other events will be added as the festival approaches. Black River Harbor
Black River Harbor has three separate attractions. The harbor and adjacent picnic grounds with their 60 picnic tables and grills are available as is a recently remodeled enclosed pavilion. The campground is modern with flushing toilets, a sewage dumping station, pressure water system, and 40 paved camping spurs. The waterfalls can be observed along the scenic byway by walking the trail along the Black River or parking at each individual fall. With the free boat launch and boardwalk/dock, the harbor can accommodate most any water craft trailered to the harbor without collecting fees. Docking is on a first come first serve basis with an on-site concessionaire to regulate transient boat
docking from Memorial Day through September annually. The concessionaire offers fuel and sewage pumping services for boaters with limited supplies available. The Black River Harbor is the only harbor within the National Forest System. Located approximately 15 miles north of Bessemer at the mouth of the Black River. The Black River flows through large pine, hemlock, and hardwood trees, with multiple scenic waterfalls as its elevation drops to Lake Superior. In 1992, the Black River area was officially dedicated as a National Scenic Byway because of its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The Scenic byway stretch begins on
County Road 513 at the intersection with County Road 204 (Airport Road) and travels 11 miles North to the harbor. During 1848, William A. Burt, a land surveyor, completed a survey of what is now the Black River Recreation Area. The original survey shows a wagon road going south from the mouth of the Black River to Chippewa Hill, which is the location of the Copper Peak Ski Flying Hill. A separate trail led from the mouth of the Black River to iron mines on the Gogebic Range. By 1904 the state built a road from Bessemer to Lake Superior, which is not the scenic byway. Waterfalls The many rivers in the area form an abundance of waterfalls that can be appreciated by hikers. Some of the hikes travel just a
short distance from paved parking lots while other treks are a little deeper into the woods. Officials from area chambers of
commerce, the Ottawa National Forest and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park can provide maps and more information.

Superior Falls: At 90 feet high, the falls are fed by the Montreal River near Lake Superior. To get there take Wisconsin 122, turning north off of U.S. 2, near Saxon. Stay on 122 for 4.2 miles, crossing the Wisconsin-Michigan border. Continue another 1/2 mile, then turn left on a gravel road marked by Xcel Energy. Interstate Falls: Located on the east branch of the Montreal River in the Hurley area is Interstate Falls. One of Iron County's newest parks, the town of Kimball and the Northwoods Land Trust joined forces last year to purchase land next to the falls to ensure the public would be able to continue accessing the site. The purchased property — which consists of approximately 38.7 acres near the 17.5-foot waterfall on the west side of the Montreal River and includes 2,500 feet of frontage on the river along with a roughly quarter-mile corridor on Cominski Creek — was named the Siebert Scenic Conservation Area to honor its former owners. The falls can be accessed by taken U.S. 2 for .6 miles from Hurley to Center Drive, where there is a sign marking the property. Turning north at the sign, follow road straight east — do not take any side roads. Continue for .3 miles and park at large parking area on the left. Follow the trail to the north to visit Interstate Falls. More information on Interstate Falls can be found at http://www.interstatefalls.org.
Black River National Forest Scenic Byway: Sightseers can spend an entire afternoon stopping at the five major falls along the Black River. The falls all have a short walking distance from each of their parking areas. The first is Great Conglomerate Falls, with a 3/4-mile walk, the farthest walk of any of the falls. To get there, head north for about 3 miles along Powderhorn Road off of U.S. 2 near Bessemer. Take a left onto Black River Road and follow for it about 10 miles. There will be signs marking the waterfalls. The next falls, Potawatomi Falls, are 30 feet high. The falls are a short walk away from Gorge Falls, which have a 34-foot drop. Sandstone Falls are 15 feet high and Rainbow Falls are 30 feet. Agate Falls: These 40-feet high falls are part of the middle branch of the Ontonagon River. They are located about 6.5 miles east of Bruce Crossing along M28. Bond Falls: The 40-foot falls are fed by the middle branch of the Ontonagon River and Bond Flowage, located east of U.S. 45 from Paulding on Bond Falls Road. Bond Falls are more than 100 feet wide and are a Michigan State Scenic Site. Gabbro Falls: The 40-feet high falls are located on the Black River near Ramsay. To get there, head north on Blackjack Road from U.S. 2 for about 1.6 miles, then take a left over a wooden covered bridge. Stay left for about 1/2 mile and find the falls to the east. O Kun-de-Kun Falls: Located on the Baltimore River, these 25-feet high falls are one of the wilder falls that require a bit of hiking to visit. One of the only few plunge falls in Michigan, daredevils can actually go behind the falls but must be careful. The trailhead to the falls is about 8 miles north of Bruce Crossing on U.S. 45. Presque Isle Falls: There are several falls located within Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park along the Presque Isle River. From Wakefield, travel east along M-28 to County Road 519. Wisconsin Kimball Falls: These gently cascading rapids on the west branch of the Montreal River skirt the Kimball Town Park. The park offers picnic and play areas, as well as a nature trail. Take U.S. 2 west of Hurley, turn south on Park Road and west on Town Park Drive. Potato River Falls: The falls are a monstrous 90 feet high, located on the Potato River in Gurney. Take U.S. 2 to Wisconsin 169 and turn south. Continue for 2.8 miles through Gurney, then turn right on Potato River Falls Road. Travel 1.5 miles until you can’t drive any farther. Rustic picnic campsites are available. Spring Camp Falls: The 20-feet high falls are along the west branch of the Montreal River, south of Hurley, and are also known as the Montreal Falls. From Hurley, take U.S. 51 south for 4.7 miles and turn right onto County C. Follow that for 1.5 miles and continue left on Island Lake Road for about 2.7 miles. Take a right on Falls Road and drive for 1.3 miles. The destination will be on the right. Wren Falls: (Not recommended without a 4x4 and good clearance) Located along the Tyler Forks River, Wren Falls are 30 feet high. Take U.S. 2 15 miles west of Hurley and turn left on Wisconsin 169. Travel about 5.7 miles and turn left on Vogues Road. Stay on there for about 3.5 miles. At the hairpin turn, take the center road across. One mile down the road, stay to the right at the fork and continue a few hundred yards. When leaving, take a right onto Sullivan Fire Lane. Upson Falls: From Upson travel west on Wisconsin 77, then take a right on Park Road. The signs will guide you to the Upson Town Park where you can view the 18-foot high falls.
Border Falls Saxon Falls: These 110-foot falls are located on the Montreal River. Drive west on U.S. 2 from Ironwood for about 10.5

Mercer: Loon Capital Mercer Summer Big things are taking place this summer in the Loon Capitol of the Northwoods. Throughout the summer, Mercer, Wis., has numerous events planned to keep everyone entertained.
The festivities resume at the park after the parade at where there will be live music, food, beverages, kids games, and what some call one of the best fireworks displays in the Northwoods beginning at dusk.
Lupine Junefest/Mercer bird Festival This year, Mercer will host the eleventh annual Lupine Junefest at Carow Park on June 10. The event will feature a bike tour of the lupines, an arts and crafts show, classic car show, kid’s activities, music, food, and beverages. Loon Days For 37 years, Mercer has celebrated Loon Day on the first Wednesday in August. This year the event takes place on Aug. 2 with an arts and crafts show, sidewalk bake sales, raffles, live music by the Lakeland Barber Shop Chorus, and the famous Loon Calling Contest at 12:30 p.m. The event gets started with a street dance in downtown Mercer the night before. The dance will take place in front of Heart of the North with live music playing from 7 to 11 p.m.
Mercer Garden Tour The Mercer Garden Tour, sponsored by the Woods and Blooms Garden Club, has been giving plant enthusiasts access to some of the area’s most elaborate gardens for the past 10 years. Can-Yak Fishing Tournament The Great Northern Motel will be hosting its third annual Fishing Tournament and Festival on Sept. 9-10. Miners Mural
Miners Mural, located on the 100 block of East McLeod Avenue in downtown Ironwood, honors the miners who worked on the Gogebic Iron Range in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula. The mural, which took three and a half years to complete, was finished in 2012. A book listing the names of the 111 miners painted on the mural is for sale at Northwoods Cabin and Downtown City News, both located just blocks from the mural in Ironwood. Proceeds from the sale go to the general upkeep of the mural.

Gile Flowage The expansive Gile (Wis.) Flowage offers a variety of fishing opportunities, but walleyes and monster muskies are the prime species. There are four boat landings on the Montreal River Flowage, controlled by Xcel Energy. Landings in Gile and on County C offer ample space for parking boat trailers and also shore fishing opportunities. The 3,138-acre flowage has a maximum depth of 25 about feet, but that’s deep enough to hold a large population
of walleyes. Walleyes inhabit shallow water after spawning in the spring and tend to move deeper during the summer months. They can readily be caught from shore in spring on bait or with artificial lures, like Rapalas. There’s also an abundant population of smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskies and panfish, like crappies. Winter fishing has become as popular on the flowage as summer angling, and tents spring up across the ice during coldwater months.
Hiawatha
The Ironwood Chamber of Commerce purchased and installed a 52-foot fiberglass statue of Native American chief Hiawatha for $10,000 in 1964. The statue was manufactured by Gordon Industries of Minneapolis and transported 230 miles on a flatbed truck to its current location at the end of Burma Road in Hiawatha Park on June 25, 1964. Hiawatha was believed to have created peace among Native American tribes and is credited for forming the Iroquois nation. Hiawatha was hoisted to a standing position by a mining crane and is supported by 55 yards of concrete and 5,000 pounds of steel reinforcements. The statue is made to withstand winds of 140 mph. For a number of years the community celebrated Hiawatha Days over a long weekend in July. They included events like concerts, a battle of the bands, a rodeo, downtown carnival, softball tournament and authentic Ojibway dancers from Lac du Flambeau, Wis. The Ironwood Chamber of Commerce offered a 50th birthday celebration for the Hiawatha statue in July 2015 as part of Festival Ironwood, the community’s current mid-July celebration The Native American chief still stands tall just south of downtown Ironwood welcoming visitors. Paavo Nurmi Marathon The second Saturday of every August, runners converge on Iron County, Wis. The 49th Paavo Nurmi Marathon, Wisconsin's oldest marathon, is set for Saturday, Aug. 12. The race offers a rare mid-summer marathon and is well-supported by hundreds of volunteers and spectators along its scenic course. The Paavo starts at 7:30 a.m. in Upson, Wis., and travels through the hills of Iron County to its eventual finish on Silver Street in downtown Hurley. The marathon continues to offer twoperson and five-person relay events. The Paavo also continues to be a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The winning streaks of Ben Schneider and his wife, Candice, both came to an end last year as injuries hampered both of their races. Ben had won 10 straight full marathons while Candice had won the last five women's marathons. Both finished second, Ben behind August Pappas of Brighton, Mich., and Candice a spot back of Emily Jaehnig of Madison, Wis. Aid stations are available throughout the course. They are staffed by the
Paavo's large volunteer crew that comes back year after year. Area residents cheer on the runners as they make their way down Silver Street. Hurley 4th of July The annual Light’n the Night Fireworks Extravaganza will take place in Hurley over Lake Michele on July 4 starting at dusk. The event is sponsored by the Hurley Fourth of July Committee through donations from area businesses, organizations and residents. Marty’s Goldenaires Marty's Goldenaires, Sponsored by the Bessemer American Legion Post 27, is the only Legion-sponsored Drum and Bugle Corps left in the USA. Marty's is a parade and concert corps performing primarily in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, from May to Labor Day weekend. Musical selections through the years have pleased all audience types with a mixture of swing, rock, patriotic and nostalgic drum corps styles. With roots going back to the 1930s, as Sons of the Legion Junior Corps, Marty's was established in 1950 as a Senior Corps. Membership includes males between the ages of 16 and 91 years of age. This unique age mix gives Marty's Goldenaires a blend of
nostalgia, a solid nucleus, and a young enthusiasm and excitement which is evident as the audience involve themselves in Marty's Goldenaires performances. 2017 Performances Marty's is invited to the Woodruff, Wis., car show concert May 27, The corps voted to participate in the Appleton Flag Day parade on June 10, and perform a concert following at the American Legion Post. Traditionally, Marty's has performed at the Hayward Musky Festival, and Ramsay, Marenisco, Wakefield and Bessemer 4th of July festivals, but this year is adding Bruce Crossing. Marty's is invited to do the Iron River
Rodeo parade and U.P. Firefighters Tournament parades in Florence, Wis., in July They will also perform at the Two Harbors Heritage Festival and the Spooner, Wis., Rodeo parade. Marty's will host its annual Fundraiser Town Picnic at Bluffs Valley Park on Saturday, Aug 12. Other invites received include the Menominee waterfront festival parade and concert, the Park Falls Flambeau Rama, and the Iron County (Wis.) Fair. August traditionally ends with the Gogebic County Fair, Hurley Festival Italiano and the Ontonagon Labor Festival parade. Other August performances will include concerts at three area nursing homes.
Ramsay 4th of July
This year's Fourth of July celebration in historic Ramsay is happening on Saturday, July 1, for the most part. On Saturday a live band will take to the streets at dusk to pump up the volume and get the party started. There will be food, refreshments and dancing to go along with the music. Museums of History There are several museums in the area including two in Ironwood, one in Hurley, one in Bessemer, one in Wakefield, one in Mercer, and another in Ontonagon. These museums preserve local history and culture in the form of photographs, equipment and other artifacts. In Ironwood, the Old Depot Park Museum is located downtown between Lowell and Suffolk streets. Constructed in 1892 as a railway depot, it is over 100 years old. It houses a museum featuring iron mining displays and other railroad memorabilia, and the Ironwood Historical Society research center. For more information, call 906-932-0287. The Ironwood Chamber of Commerce also has its office in the old depot. The Ironwood Memorial Building houses all of the municipal offices, a 1,500-seat auditorium and many historical displays, including a statue of a World War I doughboy and numerous bronce tablets listing locals who served during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and the World War I. Located at 202 Iron St. in Hurley, the Iron County Historical Society Museum opened in 1971 in the former Iron County Courthouse. It displays artifacts on the history of

The re-purposed railroad depot showcases items from Mercer’s history including tools used by early settlers, early photographs, maps, and archived newspapers. Aside from the museum itself, there are three historicl buildings on the grounds including an old jail, barber shop, and one room schoolhouse. The Ontonagon County Historical Society Museum houses mining, loggining, farming, and marine artifacts. The museum is open from May through September. Sylvania Wilderness Area The Sylvania Wilderness and Recreational Area located 7 miles east of Watersmeet and is part of the Ottawa National Forest. The area boasts 18,327 acres of camping, fishing, hiking, and canoeing. There are 34 lakes within the area itself. Many of the lakes offer sandy beaches, while the old growth forests contain remarkably large pines. The area is also home to many endangered plants and animals native to this region. The Clark Lake campground offers 48 drive-up campsites with a nearby
picnic area, showers, drinkable water, restrooms, and a boat launch For more adventurous campers, the wilderness contains a multitude of campsites woven throughout the various hiking trails. The designated areas have a fire ring and a wilderness latrine provided at each site. A permit is required for all campers within the Sylvania Wilderness Area. Ottawa Visitor Center The Ottawa Visitor Center is a hub for recreational activities in the Ottawa National Forest. It is located east of the U.S. 2 and U.S. 45 intersection in Watersmeet and has been in operation since 1971.
The center itself offers a wealth of information and stimulating wildlife displays for the whole family, environmental education programs, area maps, and a gift shop with area merchandise and souvenirs. Access to several nature trails is
also available from the visitor center location. The center is open daily, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays for evening programs. For more information, call 906-9321330 or 906-358-4724
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Summer is a busy time for visitors in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Yearly from 250,000 to 300,000 visitors camp, hike, sightsee, fish, ski and enjoy the wonder of one of the few remaining large wilderness areas in the midwest. Weekly Superior Riders bike rides will begin for its fifth season on Wednesday, May 17. The rides are at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday until after Aug. 9 when they will begin at 6 p.m. The rides are held regionally and are from eight to 15 miles and last anywhere from one to one and a half hours. Golf Courses
Golfing the courses on the Gogebic Range is an excellent way to spend a summer day. From the panoramic views from the Skye course on Whitecap Mountains (715-651-2227) near Iron Belt to the 18 holes at the Lac Vieux Desert Casino in Watersmeet, there are plenty of tree-lined challenges for golfers of all levels. The Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood (906-932-2525) offers 18 holes on a mostly flat layout, with plenty of interesting holes that offer a variety of options. Perhaps the signature hole is the dogleg par four No. 14, guarded by deep bunkers on both sides. A steeply sloped green adds to the challenge. The long par 5 finishing hole, with a green that can be viewed from the dining area of the clubhouse, is another favorite. At the Eagle Bluff Golf Club in Hurley (715-561-3552), the
sloped greens are a challenge and the back nine can be brutal under windy conditions. Still, there are plenty of short holes that present birdie opportunities following accurate drives. The toughest hole is the par four No. 11, which doglegs right. It takes a healthy drive to get a look at the green and keeping the ball in play off the tee can be tough. Five is a good score on the 420-yard hole. Watersmeet’s Lac Vieux Desert (906-358-0303) course, with its blue grass fairways, is right next to the casino. The back nine is as challenging as any course in the area. Tahoe Lynx near Mercer (715-476-0050), offers nine holes in a wooded setting. Other courses include the Chequamegon Bay in Ashland; the Ontonagon Golf Club, the Gateway Golf Club in Land O’ Lakes, Wis., and the Mellen Country Club.

Lake Superior Fishing The Michigan Department of Natural Resources' stocking trucks have released their prized recreational cargo at hundreds of lakes and streams throughout the state. Fish stocking is a valuable tool used by fisheries managers to restore, enhance and create new fishing opportunities in inland lakes, streams and the Great Lakes. The MDNR’s Fisheries Division accomplishes the task by rearing fish at its six fish production facilities throughout the state, cooperatively managing up to 46 rearing ponds and eight Great Lakes imprinting net pen locations, and maintaining a fleet of 18 specialized fish stocking vehicles.
Over the course of a typical year, the DNR will stock roughly 26 million fish weighing nearly 350 tons, including eight species of trout and salmon and three coolwater strains of walleye and muskellunge. Beginning in mid-March and ending in early June, MDNR fish stocking trucks will travel well more than 100,000 miles to stock from 700 to 1,100 locations. Michigan anglers have access to four Great Lakes, 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, more than 11,000 inland lakes and tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams.
