he Gogebic Range is full of natural beauty all year round, but its deep snow winters remain the most popular time of the year for visitors. Snowmobilers, downhill skiers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers find a myriad of winter playland opportunities. More than 400 miles of constantly groomed snowmobile trails, an array of alpine ski resorts, many kilometers of groomed Nordic ski trails and an abundance of wilderness to snowshoe through await outdoor enthusiasts. A long weekend of fun in the snow won’t be enough for any family —

plan a week on the Gogebic-Iron Range and visit the many shops and restaurants that dot the main streets of Ironwood, Hurley, Bessemer, Wakefield and surrounding towns. Take in a rare treat at one of Ironwood’s live theaters — many shows are performed by local talent. Discover the area’s rich history and how it turned from rugged wilderness where loggers fought to stay alive, to the quaint small-town America it has become by touring one or all of the local history museums. The Iron County Historical Society’s Museum is open year-round in Hurley and downtown Ironwood features a museum in Depot Park. Skiers can try one hill after another or choose the one that suits

them best, including the college-run Mt. Zion on the campus of Gogebic Community College, Big Powderhorn Mountain, Indianhead, Blackjack or the Porcupine Mountains. Bundle up and go inside to the Pat O’Donnell Civic Center, also on the college campus. The civic center has open ice-skating hours throughout the winter. A snack bar is available and there are training poles for the young ones who are just learning to skate. While on the GCC campus, try snow tubing down Mt. Zion. There are lodging options for any budget or taste and eateries found nowhere else. Seeing and experiencing the Gogebic Range covered with snow is proof that family vacations don’t require beaches and warm temperatures. Rather than hibernating through winter, embrace and enjoy the season and its snow at any number of events or venues across the Gogebic Range.

Every weekend, Blackjack offers a fun event, whether it’s dressing up as pirates or celebrating Mardi Gras.

Blackjack ski resort is hosting an ISOC National Snocross race on Dec. 6-7, with skiing and snowboarding starting the following weekend on Dec. 13, and will be open seven days a week. Recent improvements to the resort include a three-faced fireplace in the Loggers Lounge, along with the extension of the second bar in the lounge. Food is also available at the Blackjack Cafe. The menu has been revamped over the past two seasons, with a favorite addition in the lounge of fish tacos. Outside, the resort has purchased a new park cat machine to assist with increasing focus on snowmaking quality and quantity. This year, Blackjack is up to 27 runs, with seven glade runs from top to bottom added over the last three years. In the summer, the glade runs are used as downhill bike runs, with lift service available. Three terrain parks are offered for riders of varying level

The Blackjack Olympiad and “Board til You Drop” fundraising event for the Special Olympics will be featured again this spring. Big Powderhorn Mountain Big Powderhorn Mountain is gearing up for a Dec. 13 skiing opener, weather permitting. Coming off a 211-inch snowfall for last winter, Powderhorn officials will be looking for a repeat of those numbers, with an earlier start to winter this year preferable. Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort was recognized for two years in a row as having the “Best Downhill Terrain” in the Midwest by OnTheSnow.com, the web’s most visited snow skiing site. Visitors named Powderhorn “Best Downhill Terrain” in 2010. The resort, which opened for the 1963’64 season, lost its main lodge in a fire in January 2011. Big Powderhorn then invested about $3 million in a modern, energy-efficient and “skier-friendly” lodge positioned near the Caribou Lodge. The new facility is called Gun Barrel Lodge, conveniently located right next to three ski lifts, with the beginners’ area right at the base of the lodge. Inside, the lodge features heated concrete and three fireplaces. The ski resort offers 253 skiable acres, with 33 trails and three terrain parks. It has an uphill capacity of 10,800 skiers per hour, and the longest run is a full mile. Page 10 – Winter Fun & Dining Guide

There are nine double chairlifts and a beginners’ handle tow. The tubing park also has a handle tow, and there’s a lighted outdoor ice rink. Big Powderhorn offers night skiing during the holidays and most Saturdays. On New Year’s Eve, there’s a torchlight parade and fireworks over the mountain. The resort makes snow over 93 percent of its terrain. It boasts a grooming department that takes pride in the snow conditions every night for the next day’s skiing. Ownership of the resort changed for the 2009-10 season and the success of the change is measured in the resort being named one of the 13 best small businesses of 2010 by the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center. Big Powderhorn was selected from among 15,000 companies for its success in sales, employees, business strategy and economic impact on the community. Lodging and skiing are available in a

Bavarian-style village that comes to life with snow. Food is available at the Caribou Lodge and the Hideout Grill and Bar, along with live music and entertainment. Iron County’s Whitecap Mountains offers 43 downhill ski runs, from double black diamond expert trails to easy slopes for beginners. Located on beautiful Weber Lake, near Upson and Iron Belt, ski-in and ski-out lodging and ski packages are offered for families or groups, with trail-side condominiums. Located on the western end of the Lake Superior Snowbelt, Whitecap is just west of Hurley and Ironwood. Whitecap is located 20 miles west of Hurley, off Wisconsin 77. Look for the Whitecap Mountains/Skye Golf turn-off immediately past the town of Iron Belt, then travel 3.5 miles on County E to the resort. There’s a bunny hill with a rope tow and a polar bear bowl with a magic carpet lift for smaller skiers. The main lodge restaurant and bakery/deli are open during ski season, along with a full service ski and snow-

board rental and repair shop and gift shop. Ski hill operators make snow nightly on the more challenging runs when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. Whitecap, Thunderhead and Eagles Nest mountains make up the ski resort, and they’re part of the ancient Penokee Range. There’s plenty of skiing for everybody at every skill level and skiers report they like how the area for beginners is separated from the main ski traffic. Whitecap Lodge offers rooms and suites, many with kitchens and all with Wi-Fi access. There’s a swimming pool and huge hot tub for relaxation after a day on the slopes. Civic Center, which provides ice skating and youth hockey. Together the facilities offer hours of healthy family fun. Students in the ski area management program run the facility, learning snowmaking and grooming as part of maintaining Mt. Zion for public use. The SAM program provides technical and academic study as well as internships at major ski resorts in Colorado, California, Utah, Vermont and the Midwest. Freshmen in the program complete prerequisites, which continue during the first eight weeks of their sophomore year. Mt. Zion serves as their training laboratory. Credits are earned in classes including ski area layout, snowmaking fundamentals, emergency response, slope grooming, and classroom courses such as business. Graduates of the SAM program may choose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in ski area business management from Northern Michigan University in Marquette. Young racers from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade compete in a Saturday morning racing series and use the hill for practice.

ith Hurley and Mercer serving as hubs, Iron County offers more than 500 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Called the Snow Capital of Wisconsin, the annual snowfall often exceeds 200 inches. With plenty of lodging and snowmobile rentals, the county comes alive with sleds during snowy winter weekends. Snowblanketed forests filled with the sights and sounds of the Wisconsin northwoods is what allures many

snowmobilers to Iron County. Riders can also experience the mining heritage of days gone by with many remnants of how Iron County received its name. From the Iron Horse Trail in Hurley, the ride to Saxon and Gurney covers about 12 miles, with places to stop for gas, food and refreshments along the way. A ride on Trail 2 to Saxon Harbor is a pleasant diversion for the avid snowmobiler. A journey on Trail 17 guides riders south along the Upper Peninsula border past beautiful Pine Lake. The trail crosses many rivers and creeks, offering excellent viewing of wildlife and the natural splendor common to Iron County.

Trail 77 takes a southwestern course through the rich historic iron mining towns of Montreal, Pence and Iron Belt, with a unique opportunity to view the Plummer Mine Headframe, the only remaining mine headframe in Wisconsin. Heading in the other direction, a longer trail leads to Mercer, the Loon Capital of the world. From there, a choice trail of interest is Corridor 8, which travels west of Mercer past the Lake of the Falls scenic area and the TurtleFlambeau Flowage. This trail meanders through beautifully wooded, well-groomed trails on its way toward Ashland County. Also in the southern section of Iron County, Springstead, located on Trail 182, welcomes riders to enjoy well-marked trails that wander through dense, snow-covered forests for a unique winter experience.

he Gogebic Range Trail Authority, operating in the western end of Gogebic County, grooms 113 miles of snowmobile trails.

Trail 160 runs from Ironwood to the mouth of the Montreal River and other trails extend to the other end of Gogebic County. Trails extend to Presque Isle and Winchester in Wisconsin. The club operates two groomer machines, manned by 10 volunteer drivers. It receives funding from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for brushing and signing, as well as a reimbursement amount per mile of groomed trails to offset fuel and maintenance costs. The groomers, 2007 and 2009 machines, pull drags that smooth the trails. In addition to individual members, the nonprofit club has commercial members. Commercial memberships translate into advertising signs along the trails for participating businesses. Although the focus is on grooming snowmobile trails, the club meets year round and is responsible for signing all trails to the MDNRâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new specifications. Ontonagon area

Snowmobiling is big business in Ontonagon County. Businesses on Lake Gogebic and in Bergland depend on snow and influx of hundreds of snowmobilers for economic health. The Ontonagon County Chamber of Commerce and area snow groomers note that in the past 10 years, the Bergland area has averaged 200 inches of snow per year. Nearly every business and gas station has snowmobile trail maps, and rentals of the sleds have increased each year. The Gogebic Area Groomers Page 18 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Winter Fun & Dining Guide

maintain 154 miles of trails with three groomers. Last year, the groomers traveled more than 21,000 miles, running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Snowmobile visitors come from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. Trails are interconnected regionally. Trail 8, which runs from the west through Kenton, Bruce Crossing, Ewen and Bergland, also connects to trails headed to Lake Gogebic, Copper Harbor and Ontonagon, as well as Iron Mountain, Ironwood and Hurley. The North Country Snowmobile

Club in Ontonagon grooms 98 miles of trails and has 10 men and women working as groomers. The North Country Club has been working with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to improve snowmobiling, as well as other clubs for the benefit of the entire area. The club also hopes to sponsor a senior citizens ride in February. For more than 25 years, the Western U.P. has been rated as a snow destination, and area chambers and clubs are working to keep it that way.

here is excitement at the Porcupine Mountains with the coalition between Gogebic Community College’s Ski Area Management program, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Porcupine Mountains staff. The addition of the Gogebic Community College SAM students as partners last year brought positive comments from the public, both on grooming and public relations. “Everyone is working well together,” said Bob Wild, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park interpreter. ross-country ski trails from Montreal to Mercer in northern Wisconsin’s Iron County and into the western Upper Peninsula offer access to a variety of terrain and scenery.

Except for the privately-owned ABR, trails are maintained and groomed by volunteers – equipment and fuel is a major expense for these local ski clubs. Daily use fees are deposited on

an honor system in boxes at the trailheads or warming houses. Conditions, amenities, trail markers and degree of difficulty vary widely. There are areas where cellphones do not work.

Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails

Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails in Ironwood offer five loops totaling 24 kilometer of skiing for striders and skaters. Wolverine is a nonprofit group that promotes Nordic skiing in and around Gogebic County in the western U.P. Abundant snow coupled with the natural rolling terrain of the northern hardwood forest makes for good skiing and snowshoeing. There is a warming chalet at the trailheads, with a view of the historic wood skijump structure that was part of the club’s original activities. It is no longer in use. A snowshoeing trail has been marked with blue metal markers, with the trailhead marked to the right and left of the ski jump near the chalet. Upcoming events include the Aspirus Grand View YooperBeiner snowshoe race on Feb. 22. In the past, the Wolverine has also hosted the Grand View Challenge, the first Junior Olympic Qualifier of the year. A date has yet to be set for this event. MECCA

MECCA in Mercer, Wis., grooms about 18 km of trails across a combination of state, Iron County, town of Mercer and private land. The ski club dates back about 20 years. There are two trailheads, Little Turtle Trailhead and Cabin Trailhead, the site of a chalet built of logs cut and prepared by club members. The chalet has a changing room and wax bench, woodstove and hot chocolate. It is usually open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. during ski season. The club’s annual candlelight ski is the last Saturday in January from 6 to 9 p.m. It will be at the Cabin Trailhead, loop around

the Warm-Up Trail, the Cabin Trail, part of the Wolf Loop, and through the field. A bonfire and woodstove, hot chocolate and other refreshments will await skiers at the cabin. Trail use is free for this event. Trails are groomed by volunteers as conditions allow. Hiking, snowshoeing and dogs are allowed only on untracked portions of trails. Suggested trail-use donation is $8 per adult, $5 per child, $1 per dog or $20 for however many in a vehicle. For more information and trail maps, visit skimecca.org.

Uller Trail

Uller Trail at Upson, Wis., is billed as the most remote ski trail in Wisconsin. Skiing with a companion is recommended along this 30 km trail system described as “hilly and remote.” The Uller Trailhead is at Weber Lake at the base of Whitecap Mountains downhill ski resort, just off County E. The trail runs north into the Pence area, north of Wisconsin 77.

Montreal Nordic Ski Trails

Montreal Nordic Ski Trails, in the former mining company town of Montreal, Wis. (just west of Hurley along Wisconsin 77), range from easy to quite difficult. Easiest access to this 15 km trail system is from the old city hall parking lot, on Wisconsin 77, along the west branch of the Montreal River. The Penokee Rangers groom these trails. ABR Trails

ABR Trails are located in Erwin Township, just south of Ironwood, at E5299 West Pioneer Road. A few additional kilometers of trail have been added for cross country skiers at the Active Backwoods Retreats trails along the Montreal River, in the area of Ironwood’s Norrie Park. More than 60 km of trails are open to skiing, operated by Eric Anderson and Angela Santini. There’s also a snowshoe trail and opportunities for skijoring with dog teams. Milje’s Ski Trails

Milje’s Ski Trails are located 2 miles east of Wakefield on County Road 519, also known as Chaney Lake Road. A family-run, classic-only ski area, Milje’s has everything to offer for a novice to an advanced Alpine skier. Over 10 km of beautiful, pristine and scenic trails wind through the woods next to cedar swamps, dense forest and through patches of pines. A new warming shack and parking area are available. Milje’s has been owned by the Miljevich family of Wakefield for nearly 90 years and has been run as Nordic Ski Trails for more than 30. Build a fire in the warming shack and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature after a ski run, or sit on one of many resting benches throughout the trail system to be at one with the forest. Miners Memorial Hertiage Park

The Miners Memorial Heritage Park in Ironwood provides the Miners Ski Trail for cross-country skiing and showshoeing. The park encompasses former iron ore mining locations within the city. The park consists of the Miners Ski Trail (4.3 km), the Aurora loop (1.6 km) and the Pabst loop (1.8 km). The Miners trailhead begins at Lorensen Baseball Field in Ironwood. t takes some sisu to take part in this challenging but fun race. The fifth Sisu Ski Fest is set for Jan. 11, 2014 in downtown Ironwood. Sisu is a Finnish word that means “special strength and stubborn determination to continue and overcome in the moment of adversity; a combination of stamina, courage and obstinacy held in reserve for hard times.” The “Finnish Line” is on Aurora Street in downtown Ironwood. The 42-kilometer Sisu full-marathon is the signature race with many also taking part in the 21K Heikki Lunta half-marathon. The Junior Sisu 3K and 5K will be Jan. 11 with the Finnish Line also in

downtown Ironwood. The kids’ loppett fun race is Jan. 7 at ABR Trails. New this year is snowshoeing races at Milje’s Ski Trails in Wakefield. The timed events are 2K, 5K and 10K. Registration may be done by mail, online or phone until Jan. 9. Registration after that must be done in person. The scenic race courses have gone by bluffs, river views, mining areas and Hiawatha, the world’s tallest Native American statue. Results will be provided by a professional timing service. Book Across the Bay

Hundreds of volunteers will prepare to aid an expected 4,000 skiers at the 18th annual Book Across the Bay on Feb. 15 beginning in Ashland, Wis. Book Across the Bay is a 10-kilometer course, groomed for both classic style and skate skiing, beginning in Chequamegon Bay in Ashland and ending near Thompson’s West End Park in Washburn. The race will begin at 6 p.m. Participants are encouraged to arrive in Washburn

early. A shuttle from Washburn to Ashland will be available from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. The race will be lit by the stars and candles set in ice luminaries along the entire length of the trail. A heated tent and chili feed, along with music and awards, will greet the skiers at the finish line. The race is limited to skiers and snowshoers only and participants are asked not to wear headlamps. The race supports par-

ticipation by various ages and ability levels. However, children under age 8 must be accompanied by an adult and children under age 5 are encouraged not to participate. Book Across the Bay is entirely volunteer-driven. All proceeds are redistributed to the Chequamegon Bay community through the Community Grants program. Jack Frost Festival

he 19th annual Jack Frost Festival is themed “A Klassic Christmas,” in honor of the Klassic Kruisers, who are serving as parade marshals in this year’s parade on Dec. 6. Festivities began in early November as local businesses began decorating their windows for the yearly contest. The competition winner will be determined by a panel of judges, with the winner awarded a traveling trophy on parade day. A gingerbread workshop will be held Nov. 16 at Downtown Art Place from noon until 3 p.m. Old Depot Park will host a tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20. Dec. 1 marks the opening of the Michigan snowmobile trails, weather permitting, as well as the Knights of Columbus Christmas tree fundraiser at 330 Scott

St. in Ironwood. The parade will be broadcast by television and radio. At 5 p.m. the Ironwood Carnegie Library will host an open house with cocoa for parade-goers. The Ironwood Area Chamber of Commerce’s $10,000 raffle will be drawn at Hitt’s Fine Furniture. The raffle sells 200 $100 tickets each year, with the top prize of $5,000, second prize, $2,000, third prize, $1,000, and four awards of $500 each. After the parade, Santa and Mrs. Claus will make an appearance at River Valley Bank in downtown Ironwood, and the Downtown Art Place will host a gingerbread house display and silent auction. The Gogebic Range Band will also present a concert at the Historic Ironwood Theatre.

Ice skating at the Patrick O’Donnell Civic Center Open skating began on Friday, Nov. 1, at the Patrick O’Donnell Civic Center on the campus of Gogebic Community College. New ice-making equipment has been installed at the center in time for the winter season. The new system was tested the week before the opener. the project was successful, with a handful of volunteers and the community corrections department assisting through people who had been assigned to community service through the court system in Bessemer. Open skating hours are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Roehm said the center gets quite a few skaters from families who have spent the day skiing or snowmobiling during the day and are looking for some night-time activities. The civic center celebrated its 30th continued on page 27

The center is not only the home for amateur skating and youth hockey organizations, but it hosts numerous one-day events like concerts, circuses and home and trade shows. The center is supported by taxpayersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; millage and it was constructed primarily as recreational center for youth of the Gogebic Range. The building contains 28,000 square feet. It is 200 feet long, 120 feet wide and 28 feet tall. The ice surface is 17,000 square feet. There is bleacher seating for 1,000, plus additional seating for as many as 2,000 if required, at floor level for large gatherings.

Copper Peak After a 20-year break, skiers will fly again at Copper Peak in 2014. The competition at the ski flying facility in Ironwood Township is set for Feb. 28 through March 2. Officials plan to host about a dozen ski jumpers in an exhibition event, which is expected to mainly include

athletes from the United States and Canada. USA Ski Jumping’s Alan Johnson said resurrecting the largest ski jump in North America was cause for his optimism and excitement. “To bring the thrill of ski flying to athletes and spectators back to the States will play a vital role in showcasing the efforts that both USASJ and Copper Peak aspire to in creating greater visibility for the sport,” he said. “This will also allow us to look at more creative, non-traditional ways to format and showcase ‘big hill’ jumping.” Johnson also praised Copper Peak officials for their efforts. “The changes and development of the sport since Copper Peak closed are significant,” he said. “The sport is much safer and controlled than 20 years ago, enabling skiers

to jump much further and control their flight. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that the old hill record will fall this winter. The question should be how many times. This is just a win/win concept for all involved.” Copper Peak’s Bryan Sanders, who was a U.S. Olympian in ski jumping at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France, said that Copper Peak’s Board of Directors are thrilled about rolling out the welcome mat for this series of events. “It’s been a long time coming. We’ve had massive debt to retire since the last event in 1994, and the venue has seen huge improvements that are bringing this historic ski jump back to FIS standards,” he said. “We’ve now got a positive revenue stream and have improved the chairlifts, the elevator, the drainage on the hill, and have recontoured the landing hill with over 2,000 tons of dirt. This summer we are installing our new snowmaking facilities and the take off has been lowered. It’s now a 175 meter hill size (HS) and I think it will be a very safe and really exciting hill, that’s coming back to life.”

Snocross at Blackjack Ski Resort

he ISOC AMSOIL Blackjack National Championship Snocross event returns this year to the Gogebic Range. The event is set for Dec. 6-7 at Blackjack Ski Resort, which is located off U.S. 2 between Bessemer and Wakefield. National snocross racing has been a hit the last two years at Blackjack. Local driver Kyle Pallin,

of Ironwood, made his first professional final race at his home track two years ago. He won his first heat race last year. Some of the sport’s biggest names have taken part — Tucker Hibbert and Ross Martin, among others. There are eight national events across the country — Duluth, Minn., Blackjack, Shakopee, Minn., Deadwood, S.D., Salmanca, N.Y.,

Snowmobile racing fans will get a double dose of action at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds in January. Winter activities include those before Christmas, and both ends of Ontonagon County will be celebrating. In Bruce Crossing, the 25th annual Christmas at the Crossing celebration will be held Dec. 7, sponsored by Stannard Township Settler’s IGS and Settler’s Depot Gallery. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST, Santa Claus will be at the Depot Gallery for a children’s Christmas party. All children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa and have a picture taken with him.
