WHEN SEASONS CHANGE, SO SHOULD YOUR SKINCARE REGIMEN....
Now that the holidays are over it's time to deal with the reality of the winter months ahead. Cold weather hits hardest as you age when the production of skin's natural moisturizers slows down. That's why it is so important to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. Cold air holds less moisture than warm air. Low humidity and even your central heating can make already dry skin even drier. If your heating system doesn't have a built-in humidifier, place a portable unit in your bedroom. These cold weather beauty ideas will protect, hydrate and help your skin stay smooth. During the day, skin is in protection mode it’s busy fending off environmental aggressors like sun, wind, and pollution. Here's some products we chose just for you. PETER THOMAS ROTH C C CREAM A positive-aging treatment, sunscreen, complexion corrector, moisturizer and tint in one, is the perfect cream for day. With Arbutin and Camu Camu, an Amazonian super fruit that has 30 times the Vitamin C of an average orange. Vitamin C helps improve collagen
creating the appearance of firmer, brighter, younger-looking skin over time. Vitamin C and Arbutin also help even out the appearance of skin tone. The tinted complexion corrector instantly minimizes the look of imperfections. Broad spectrum SPF 30 protects skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Anti-oxidant Vitamins C and E help fight free radical attack and keep skin healthy looking.
LE PEAU A mix of vitamins, oligo-elements, minerals and amino-acids, that makes the skin glow with beauty! Launched by two sisters in Geneva, LE PEAU uses a new molecular complex stabilized by biotech researchers from Stanford University. The unique texture is fast absorbed by the skin. Tests carried
out by EPFL reveal spectacular antioxidant properties. A real treat for delaying the aging process! POSITIVE AGING -FIRMING HYDRATING - ANTIOXIDANT. LE PEAU (PO means “Skin” in French) has all their products made in Switzerland and contain the innovative BBeCell Complex.
THIS WINTER JOIN IN THE TEN YEAR CELEBRATION OF THE CHANEL SKIN CARE LINE “SUBLIMAGE” This collection has everything from day into night. Since Sublimage was formulated in 2006. More than 1.6 million jars have been sold. And the line has expanded to include cleanser, eye cream, essence, toner, and serum. The main ingredient vanilla planifolia has beneficial effects on the skin; including hydration, radiance and firmness, while combatting dark spots and creating more uniform pores. Using
this special vanilla bean combined with Camellia oil, Jojoba oil, and Shea butter. Chanel has created one divine skin care regime! Hydrating skin at least twice a day is ideal—after a morning shower or bath and then right before turning in for the night. There’s a slight elevation in body temperature while you’re sleeping, so products seep into skin better. In fact, nighttime is the right time to repair your skin.
AVALON ORGANICS BRILLIANT BALANCE NIGHT CREAM Deeply moisturizes while encouraging the skin’s natural restorative cycle to smooth skin and relieve lines. Hypo allergenic and
dermatologist tested. Containing lavender, cucumber and prebiotics for added skin balancing and calming benefits of the “ultimate night cream.”
While we alI know that hot water feels good on a cold morning. However, it strips the skin, leaving it dehydrated and itchy. Try to keep your showers under 15 minutes and use water that’s just warm enough. Never use just plain soap that will only dry out your skin. Instead use a moisturizing body wash to help keep your skin soft and smooth to the touch. You might like to try JUST NATURAL calming body wash.
Post shower, pat skin almost dry and apply an oil-based cream like shea butter to better trap and lock moisture into skin to fight cold weather dryness. To boost absorption, warm your jar of cream in a sink of hot water while you shower. EU’GENIA SHEA is pure shea butter.
Another good choice is the body creme by L’OCCITANE. Created with 25% Shea butter, helps to moisturize intensely, leaving skin nourished and protected from the elements. Enriched with softening
Apricot oil and other moisturizing extracts, Linseed, Marshmallow, Sweet Almond and Honey. All helps to soften and comfort the skin without leaving a film.
And let’s not forget about protecting our lips - At the start of your day and before bed at night use a lip balm to treat and protect your lips at all times. I suggest putting one in your winter coat pocket so you don’t leave home without it!
some great flavors. These all natural balms are handmade in the USA from pure organic ingredients. They will keep your lips soft and hydrated, as well as protect them from weather exposure. Plus they are chock-full of vitamins and minerals!
ALO NATURALS Lip Balm has
VIOLETS IN THE SNOW For the Winter cover I wanted a makeup look that was soft and natural looking, while adding some irresistible pizazz to the eyes. Always be sure to choose products that have an 15-30 spf to protect your skin. Especially in the winter months from the glare of sun off the snow. For a natural finish to the skin, I like to use a protective tinted moisturizer, like PETER THOMAS ROSS CC CREAM. We want to add a soft glow, just on the apples of your cheeks. Chanel has a compact blush, “Infiniment Chanel highlighting powder” that will give a lovely soft peach glow to your cheeks.
Try using a violet mascara, YSL has the perfect color #4 Fascinating Violet. Apply one coat of the violet, one coat of black and another layer of the violet. You will be surprised at the dimension this color trick will add to your eyes. Keep the mascara on your top lashes only. In the chill air of winter weather your eyes may tear up. And this will keep any under-eye smudges from ruining your makeup. CHARLOTTE TILBURY has a soft lip color “Hepburn Honey” found in her “Sophisticate Lip Kit” that has everything you will need to create luscious lips.Use the lip pencil in the kit to outline your lips. Then fill in the outline with the same pencil to keep your lip color fresh and long lasting. Over the pencil apply the lipstick. Add a touch of the matching gloss. AND YOU’RE GOOD TO GO!
Paired with a violet eye shadow that can be used in a subtle way as a eyeliner, or as a smokey more dramatic eye. Winter can be a bit drab, so I felt the violet color would help to lift and brighten up the face. A good violet eyeshadow is not that easy to find. One of the best I discovered is from URBAN DECAY COSMETICS called “Flash” which works with any color eyes.
My thanks to Ramy Gafni for a lovely makeup on our cover.
How to keep a lady looking sexy and chic amidst all the snow and slush? Try adding more je ne sais quoi to your maquillage. RED lipstick leads the pack in terms of a simple classic color that never goes out of style.
collection begins with six beautiful lipsticks that feature his exclusive Luxe Matte Formula "I felt like a lot of the matte colors on the market tended to be dry and heavy, so I wanted to create a highly saturated, pigmented, matte, luxe lipstick that is moisturizing and feels weightless. The matte texture helps to make the color set on your lips as well as last longer. The names of these fabulous colors are inspired by the names of some of Troi's best friends....
However the correct shade of red lipstick can make all the difference. To know which red works best with your complexion. You need to identify your skins undertone whether it’s warm or cool. A makeup artist can help you with this if you are not sure.
Meet "George" the second lipstick from the right - a perfect orange-red lip color, just right for women with a warm skin tone. And just to his right would be "Parker" the perfect blue-red lipstick for the cool skin tone woman.
The orange-red lip color works best if your skin has a warm undertone. While the bluered shades tend to flatter skin with a cool undertone.
There are some women that feel comfortable just putting on a swipe of lipstick as they go out the door. And that's great if you're going to run some errands or work in the garden. Right now I'm speaking to the woman that's perhaps meeting friends for lunch in the city, or going out on

For that polished more sophisticated look, one must master the art of applying black liquid eyeliner. Whether you like a neat thin line that follows your lash line, a bit thicker line with a little upward flick at the end, or a full on cat eye look as demure or wild as you dare. All these looks can be achieved with the "Little Black Liner" a three-way eye liner by Estée Lauder. Here’s a little tip if you have a difficult time applying the liquid liner. You need a freshly sharpened black eye pencil to draw on the kind of line you desire. Then follow the pencil line with your liquid eyeliner and “Voila” perfection. Warning: Be careful not to open your eyes too soon after applying. Wait a few seconds or so, to make sure the liner has dried. That way when you open your eyes there won’t be any liner smudge. Finish with a couple of coats, or more, of very black mascara. And for that ultra sultry finish attach a pair of false lashes. Amazing makeup artist ROSHAR has a false eye lash collection available at: ModelRockLashes. A neutral blush color used as a contour under the cheek bones and under the jaw line add to this high fashion look. M.A.C. cosmetics have 5 shades to choose from, all sculpting colors with one for every skin tone.
Day or Night ~ Forever a Classic~ DARLING JUST ENJOY IT!
WHAT CAN I DO FOR MY DRY HAIR IN THE WINTER.... The main culprits are cold air, which holds less moisture than warm air, low humidity and central heating, which make already dry hair and skin even drier. But cold weather also hits harder when you’re fifty plus, and the production of natural moisturizers slows down. Your hair feels dry and loses its luster. These simple cold weather suggestions will help keep your hair smooth, shiny and looking divine: Shampoo less, perhaps every other day. Washing your hair daily depletes your natural oils. Use a shampoo with a moisturizing formula and follow with a dry hair conditioner to give your strands shine and elasticity.
We like the JUST NATURAL hair care line because it focuses on using all organic ingredients. Look for a deep conditioner that contains Linoleic Acid, Squalane, Barley and Wheat Germ extracts in order to lock moisture into the hair. Wrapping a warm towel around your head helps the conditioner penetrate the hair cuticle better. Do this once a week for finer hair and twice a week for coarse hair. And if you use permanent hair color, which makes your hair more prone to dryness, try Bumble and BUMBLE’S QUENCHING MASQUE, which really does the job of moisturizing your tresses.
Another less messy and much easier conditioning trick for your hair is a hot oil treatment from JOSIE MARAN. The self-heating agent allows the nutrients to deeply penetrate your hair. Before going out into the cold cruel world, don’t forget to use a leave in conditioner. DAVINES contains royal jelly rich in vitamins and protein, which will add body and shine, while protecting your hair from the elements. Now you can face the Winter elements feeling confident that your hair is being well protected, and looking irresistible too.
SILVER IS HOT! SILVER IS COOL! AND YES - SILVER IS SEXY! Now that having silver locks have been brought into the world of fashion and celebrity....silver hair is finally getting the respect it deserves. Besides men have enjoyed being thought of as “Silver Foxes” for years. Watch out guys, here come the “Silver Felines”. I have always loved silver hair. I don’t care for the word gray it sounds so dull. I consider silver strands “Heavenly Highlights!” With the right hairstyle and the correct attitude, your silver hair will make you a stand out as you strut down the street. Admired by women for your strength to go against the dictate of our culture, that is telling you to cover up the beauty of your true self. And shame you into dyeing your hair for fear of looking old. You may be surprised by the attention you receive from men of all ages. Along with the envy of the younger set, who have to go through a lot of work to have what you have naturally! Here are three books on the joy and care of silver hair. About growing out your tinted color to see how silver hair works
for you. And If you haven’t, perhaps you should see just what your hair looks like naturally. GOING GREY LOOKING GREAT by Diana Lewis Jewell. Discover the glory of gray in this first-of-its-kind beauty bible that celebrates the ease -- and the very modern allure -- of gray hair for women of all races, all hair types, and every shade of gray. GOING GRAY by Anne Kreamer. considered herself a youthful 49 until a photo of herself with her teenage daughter stopped her in her tracks. In one unguarded moment she saw herself for what she really was -- a middleaged woman with her hair dyed much too harshly. In that one moment Anne realized that she wasn’t fooling anyone about her age and decided it was time to let her hair become its true color, and along the way discovered her true self. Going Gray is Kreamer’s frank, warm and funny investigation of aging as a female obsession. HOW TO GO GRAY GRACEFULLY If you’re thinking about ditching the dye and going gray, then this guide will help introduce you to several practical options
on the how to go gray as gracefully as possible. I discovered an unexpected emotional component as I examined my reasons for coloring my hair in the first place and the process of “coming out into my own maturity. These are a couple products to keep your silver locks looking and feeling their best: JUST NATURAL Shampoo- This silver hair shampoo gently removes the yellowing buildup residue from your hair. With no sulfates and all natural ingredients such as, Guava, Clover Flower, Avocado, Pomegranate, Black Currant, Rosemary, Geranium and Lavender Essential oils, for healthy fuller hair that is more manageable and soft. DAVINES Alchemic Conditioner-A color conditioner suggested for silver hair and for hair that has turned yellow due to bleaching or long exposure to sun. Apply a suitable amount of product on washed damp hair. Leave on for 5 to 8 minutes, comb through, then rinse. Intensive conditioning plus a protecting action, give shine and silkiness to your hair.
O
ne might think that these winter months are depressing and cold. However, I invite you to shift your perception to the energetic mode of negative or Yin energy. Negative and derogatory are not the same. We are in a season of Yin which translates to the subtle feminine energy of going within, being more receptive to what the Universe has to offer and replenishing
our stores. I do understand the challenges of getting caught up in the doing for others, not to mention, the hustle and bustle of the past holiday season. Let’s take time to feed ourselves with reflection for the new year/new you. Detoxing the sugar, carbs and alcohol that were free flowing during the holidays. Here is one item to remove from your New Year’s Resolution List - Dieting! Where your intention goes,
therefore energy flows. If you’re focusing on portions and calories, you tend to want more of them. Come on, tell me I’m not alone in this. I read once that “no bite is ever as good as the first bite.” This resonated for me. Imagine you’re out to dinner with loved ones celebrating, which calls for that decedent chocolate desert. Just have one bite. You’ll experience the bliss of indulgence along with the empowerment of self-control. Can you honestly think of a more powerful combination?
Take a few moments every day, whether it’s for five or fifty minutes, and just breathe. Many of us have no idea how to really breathe correctly. I encourage you to take some time and focus on your breathing. Is it slow and shallow, heavy and shallow or are you even holding your breath? How often do you take time to just notice how you’re breathing? Close your eyes. Slowly inhale as you silently count to 10. Hold for a moment then exhale for 10. Next inhale, count to 11. Then exhale to 11. Continue to breathe and increase your count. Challenge yourself every day to take 10 to 12 deep breaths several times a day. Then notice how much more invigorated yet, relaxed you feel as you feed and fuel the brain, blood and nervous system with more oxygenation. Try doing this just before bed to have the best night’s sleep ever. Winter is the peak time for gym memberships since we’re all looking to firm up and get our bodies/muscles in shape. So let’s add our lungs to the New Year workout regime. Most importantly, remember during these winter months of hibernation, to be kind to your-SELF. Feed and
refuel your-SELF. Be more balanced your- SELF. Only then will you be able to help and care for your loved ones better than you were able to before.
Take a few “ moments every
day, whether it’s for five or fifty minutes, and just breathe.
”
Until next season ~ wishing you all love and happiness
"EXECUTIVE WOMAN" Interview by Tara Shannon
Cindy Joseph (65) married young and had two kids before starting her career in the late 70’s. Cindy worked in Paris and New York as a top makeup artist for twenty five years. She became known for her minimal approach to cosmetics. Then in her late forties, when Cindy let her hair turn gray, a model scout, impressed by Cindy’s natural good looks and luxurious silver hair, approached Cindy as she was walking down the street. Cindy immediately started working with all the top photographers in New York City, becoming one of the first models with silver gray hair to represent top brands such as Oil of Olay and Nivea, to name just a few.
Cindy, you started your own cosmetic company, BOOM! at the age of 60. What motivated you to start your own line? Looking back, the key ingredient to motivation, the one you have to have, is a Passion and Vision. You have to want it. There's this fire within that says, “I’ve GOT to deliver this to the world." I knew there had to be a huge market for women like me, wanting to be acknowledged and celebrated for our age. I wanted to create a makeup and skincare line that was PRO AGE! When I started doing research for it, I was amazed at how every single product and campaign was anti-wrinkle, anti-age, just anti-YOU. The cosmetic companies didn’t even realize the messages they were sending out. Honestly, the truth, as we all know it, is that we get better as we get older. We’re savvy enough to define our values and beauty for ourselves. What were the greatest contributions to your present success?
Soon Cindy became recognized by women her age, who were thrilled to see someone like themselves in the media. These women began thanking Cindy for giving them the permission to own their age, and go silver too.
Instead of trying to fit into an ideal, I realized we are the ideal. I draw endlessly from that inspiration. If I didn’t know something, I’d keep asking the experts until I did. I was fascinated by the process. I think it was very helpful that I let myself go through the process of learning and discovering, while staying true to my passion and devotion to PRO AGE.
This inspired Cindy to start Boom!, her cosmetic company of now five years.
Since I was starting at 60, I knew I could pull from what I had learned throughout my life: from self-help, to the years of diplomacy at work, to all the experiences of working with women of all skin types that I’d been making-up for years. Add to that my decades of networking. I was able to draw on all of these things, for my business and my products.
She is here to share what motivated her, the secrets to her success and where she plans to go from here.
What were the very first products you created? My line started with just two products. The first is Boomstick Color. A sheer, universal color that work's on every woman and could be used as your lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, or contour, even. Jennifer Aniston was an early fan of the line. The second is Boomstick Glo, an organic moisturizer that is multi-functional as well. You can use it on your face, on your lips, under your eyes, or on your cuticles. Two products that take care of everything were in a tube that you could throw in your purse. I think these products appealed to women 50+ because we’ve already figured out what works for us. We’re not looking for the next new thing; we’ve been there, we’ve done that. We want what works. We KNOW what works. BOOM! online is a community for women to express what they want and need. It’s how I developed Boomsilk, a rich body moisturizer for women our age who have drier skin. After that launched, I filled the next request: a non-oily moisturizer, the Boomcotton. And I’m really proud of Boomtouch, a sensual lubricant with no added scent for post- menopausal women that is safe to use internally. I truly enjoy an intimate and very real connection with my clientele through Social presence. They know they are being heard.
What’s up next on the horizon? My clients have been begging for a Boom face cleanser, so I’m working on that right now. That will be our next product launch. Tell us something you do just for fun? I am having the time of my life taking hiphop-funk-mode dance classes. It is pure and total fun. I don’t have to be good at it. I'm there for the pure pleasure of it. It’s a gas! Thank you Cindy, it's been a joy talking with you. And welcome to the Irresistible Beauty Society. Thank you Tara, it's been my pleasure.
