Human Services
If you enjoy helping others in crisis or those who are having difficulty coping with life problems, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services is your key to a rewarding career. Students may choose from three areas of specialization. Addictions Studies
Addictions Studies explores the nature and impact of addiction on families, individuals and society. Focus is on addictive behaviors including substance abuse, gambling and internet addiction. Students learn strategies for treatment and recovery, as well as how to provide support, coordinate community outreach activities and facilitate educational programs. Careers are available in a variety of in-patient as well as out-patient treatment facilities. Youth & Family Studies

This concentration focuses on issues that affect families and children including child behavior problems, domestic abuse, delinquency, sexual abuse, special needs and aging. Students learn to identify problematic behaviors and cycles of abuse that interfere with healthy living. Interviewing and intervention strategies and techniques are a major focus. Graduates may pursue careers that include victim advocates, child advocates, caseworkers, outreach workers, life-skills instructors, family-support workers and crisis-intervention workers. Human Services Generalist
This concentration allows students to take electives from both the Youth & Family and Addictions Studies concentrations. Practical application of skills and techniques through simulated classroom scenarios is emphasized. Students prepare to work in a broad array of areas including agency family-services counselor, dependency case manager and intake interviewer. Graduates Go Further
Nearly four out of five program graduates are employed shortly after graduation. This includes placement with dozens of local agencies including SafeSpace and Children's Home Society. Many program graduates continue their education with a Master’s Degree in Health Counseling or Clinical Social Work while working in the human services field. Admissions Requirements
A.A. or A.S. Degree with a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. An A.S. Degree in Social and Human Services is preferred. See irsc.edu for required prerequisite courses.
