Student Accessibility Services (SAS) offers services and academic advising to IRSC students who self-identify as having a documented disability. SAS collaborates with faculty to ensure that reasonable accommodations are in place so that qualified students with disabilities have equal opportunity for academic success. SAS also works with area high schools to assist their prospective graduates in transitioning to IRSC. A disability is a type of physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Examples include, but are not limited to • Attention deficit/hyperactivity; • Autism spectrum disorders; • Deafness/hard of hearing; • Emotional/behavioral impairments; • Health/physical impairments; • Specific learning disabilities; • Speech/language impairments; and • Vision impairments.
Services available to eligible students include • Note-taking assistance; • Testing accommodations; • Use of equipment and assistive technology; • Readers and scribes; • Sign language interpreters; and • Alternative text.
IRSC students seeking accommodations have a responsibility to • Self-identify or disclose the disability to IRSC
Student Accessibility Services and request services;
• Obtain and provide documentation (dated within the past five
years) such as psycho-educational test results or a physician’s report. The documentation should verify the disability, describe the extent of the impairment and provide information that supports the need for specific accommodations;
• Act as independent adults and use appropriate self-advocacy strategies; • Contact their instructors to confirm accommodations for each class; and • Arrange for and obtain their personal attendants, individual tutoring and specifically fitted or designed assistive technologies.
Rights of Students with Disabilities The rights of students with disabilities that pertain to postsecondary education are provided under Section 504 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. These laws prohibit discrimination by institutions to “otherwise qualified” students with disabilities. This enables such students to have an equal opportunity to benefit from the education offered by those institutions.
