Have you felt the new energy at Irvine Barclay Theatre? We’ve made a lot of exciting changes in the last year, and more are underway. In fact, we have increased our programming by 20% for 2017–18! Our signature Contemporary Dance series is back, along with an expanded Jazz at the Barclay series, and our popular British theater screenings from London. Some familiar faces will grace our stage for the first time including Broadway icons Chita Rivera and Tommy Tune, TV star Jane Lynch, one of America’s most beloved singers Linda Eder, and jazz greats Arturo Sandoval and Branford Marsalis. We are also thrilled to introduce some new talents to southern California like the extraordinary young soprano Alyson Cambridge, American Roots fusion band the Bumper Jacksons, and Broadway’s Mandy Gonzalez, who currently stars as Angelica Schuyler in the mega-hit Hamilton. We are thrilled to have you here with us for another year of adventure and cherished family holiday memories.
Our season begins with Alice in Wonderland, a full-length ballet in two acts. In bringing this literary classic to the ballet stage, Emmy Award-winning choreographer Robert Sund has created Alice’s childhood journey of selfdiscovery and brought all the characters of Wonderland vividly to life. Robert Sund originally staged Alice in Wonderland for us in 2009, and we are happy to bring back this treasure for your enjoyment.
Our season continues with our beloved production of The Nutcracker in December, and a captivating classic comical ballet, Coppélia, in March. The season culminates in August with Festival Ballet Theatre’s 11th Annual Gala of the Stars. This international ballet festival showcases ballet stars from some of the world’s most prestigious dance companies, who perform along with FBT’s own accomplished resident dancers. Festival Ballet Theatre was founded as a non-profit organization in 1988 and has grown to become Orange County’s premier ballet company. ALICE IN WONDERLAND SYNOPSIS Since Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865, children and adults have delighted in the astonishingly absurd and imaginative world Lewis Carroll created for Alice Liddell and her young playmates. Son of a clergyman and a reader in mathematics at Christ Church, Oxford University, England, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson published Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. In bringing this literary classic to the ballet stage, Robert Sund has choreographed Alice’s childhood journey of self-discovery and brought all the characters of Wonderland vividly to life. Act I
We find Alice, her older sister and their Nanny, together with Lewis Carroll himself, enjoying a summer picnic on a “golden afternoon” outside Carroll’s home in Oxford, England. A gifted photographer, Carroll is keen to take pictures of Alice and the party. Suddenly the White Rabbit appears and entices Alice to follow him, and begin her adventure to Wonderland. Robert Sund’s ballet recreates Carroll’s story as we follow Alice down the rabbit hole. Too big to continue, Alice drinks the offered potion and is soon able to enter the door that will bring her to the world of fantasy. Remember, things are never what they appear to be. The Caterpillar becomes a Butterfly and the Cheshire Cat, warning Alice that she has entered a world that doesn’t make sense, vanishes. The White Knight, an artist who is both strong and gallant, introduces himself to Alice. Their

idling is interrupted by the White Rabbit, and again Alice sets off in pursuit of him. In her wanderings, Alice finds the comic brothers Tweedledee and Tweedledum, whose dancing and drinking leave Alice sleepy. Alice is then invited by Tiger Lily and her Lily Maidens to join in their celebration. Awake, Alice grows more curious. Despite the Cheshire Cat’s warning, our heroine insists on more adventures, stumbling on the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. All the guests have arrived; the March Hare and the Dormouse, as well as the Mad Hatter himself. Act II
Leaving the Tea Party, Alice heads off to the seashore with Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Once there, she meets the tearful Mock Turtle and the Frog Footman. Alice learns that the Queen of Hearts is hosting a croquet party and all the characters of Wonderland have been invited. Anxious to attend, Alice persuades the Frog Footman to give her an invitation, and together they join the Queen and her party. More frightening than foolish, the Queen of Hearts, enraged that Alice has joined her garden fete, orders the Frog Footman executed for his kindness to Alice. Our heroine’s protests are met with the familiar “Off with her head!” When all seems lost, and Alice’s own fate sealed, the White Knight appears and rescues her from the clutches of the Queen and her Court. Alice’s adventures in Wonderland are coming to an end as the White Knight leads her back to the world of childhood, her family and to Lewis Carroll himself.

Founded in 1983 by Salwa Rizkalla, Southland Ballet Academy has acquired a national and international reputation, and has played a prominent role in grooming world-class dancers while nurturing the love of dance in its Orange County home. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Salwa Rizkalla Artistic Director Salwa Rizkalla has contributed to the Orange County community for more than 30 years by presenting excellence in dance performance through Festival Ballet Theatre and providing top-tier classical ballet training at Southland Ballet Academy.
During her professional dancing career, Ms. Rizkalla graced the stage in leading roles in well-known classical ballets as well as in contemporary pieces. She had the privilege of working under the direction of world-renowned choreographers Leonid Lavrovsky and Serge Lifar. As a young dancer, Ms. Rizkalla trained in the Russian Vaganova method and studied with ballet masters of the Bolshoi and 10 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
the Kirov. As the culmination of her training, Ms. Rizkalla completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ballet Pedagogy. She established Southland Ballet Academy in 1983 and debuted Festival Ballet Theatre in 1988. In addition to teaching and directing, Ms. Rizkalla was a faculty member of several area institutions.
Many arts organizations have recognized Ms. Rizkalla’s service. The Orange County Music and Arts Administrators and Orange County Performing Arts Center jointly presented her the Orange County Arts Educator of the Year Award for Secondary Dance (2003); Youth America Grand Prix awarded Ms. Rizkalla Outstanding Teacher accolades (2002, 2004, 2005, 2012 and 2017); and Arts Orange County recognized Ms. Rizkalla with the Helena Modjeska Cultural Legacy Award (2014). Salwa Rizkalla has been honored to impact the lives of hundreds of students and their families through her teaching. She is proud to be a dedicated educator, an energetic promoter of the arts, and an active participant in the cultural life of her community. CHOREOGRAPHER
Robert Sund Robert Sund began his career as a principal dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet. Moving on to dance with San Francisco Ballet, he performed soloist and principal roles under the tenure of Michael Smuin, and later Helgi Tomasson. Upon retirement from dancing, Mr. Sund began his career as a choreographer and guest teacher of international acclaim. As a child of deaf parents, he found an innate ability to tell stories through movement. His first full-length ballet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, created for the Norwegian National Ballet, received critical acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Since then, he has created five full-length story ballets, two Emmy award-winning ballets for television, numerous contemporary works, and gold medal-winning works for both national and international competitions and gala evenings. Traveling throughout Europe, Japan and Central America, Mr. Sund has been invited to guest teach and create original works for companies such as Nederlands Dans Theater, Frankfurt Ballet, Nacional Ballet de Cuba, Stuttgart Ballet, as well as numerous companies around the United States. Mr. Sund created the pas de deux Firebird for the opening ceremonies of the World Expo in Japan and a new ballet for American Ballet Theatre Studio Company.

COMPANY DANCERS AJ Abrams is a native of Long Beach, California. He began his training with Terri and Anthony Sellars of Orange County Dance Center and Keith and Linda Clifton of Clifton Dance Project. He continued his training throughout the United States at such schools as Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet and School of American Ballet. At age 19, Mr. Abrams was discovered by Mark Bush and began his professional career at Ballet Austin under the direction of Stephen Mills. His credits while dancing with Ballet Austin include: Hamlet, an original work by Stephen Mills; a featured role in the ballet Touch; The Taming of the Shrew; Light /The Holocaust & Humanity Project and Dreams. He has performed a solo role in Septime Webers’ Fluctuating Hemlines and principal roles as the Sugar Plum Cavalier in The Nutcracker; Albrecht in Giselle and principal male in George Balanchine’s Who Cares? Since leaving Ballet Austin, Mr. Abrams has performed in musicals, music videos and movies. Credits include: White Swan #1 in the movie The Inappropriate Comedy; a music video for Florence and the Machine, directed by David LaChapelle. In 2011, he was named Best Male Dancer in Los Angeles by The Beverly Hills Outlook. He is currently a member of the Luminario Ballet of Los Angeles and Festival Ballet Theatre, working as a freelance artist. Freelance credits include: Aurora’s Wedding Pas De Deux and The Bluebird Pas De Deux in Sleeping Beauty; the principal male in George Balanchine’s Valse Fantasie; Espada in Don Quixote and original works by choreographers Josie Walsh and Jamal Story. Ryan Camou was born in Honolulu, where he trained at the Hawaii State Ballet under the direction of John Landovsky. During his training, he received scholarships to study with the San Francisco Ballet and went on to apprentice with the Houston Ballet in Texas. He later joined Smuin Ballet and is currently also performing with the State Street Ballet in Santa Barbara, California. Some of Mr. Camou’s favorite roles include Don Jose in William Soluea’s Carmen and as an ensemble dancer in Czech contemporary choreographer Jiří Kylián’s Petite Mort, presented at the 1991 Saltzburg Festival.
Elizabeth Farmen attended the University of California, Irvine, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 2007. Ms. Farmen received the Disney Creative Arts Scholarship and the Amanda Borad Dance Scholarship in 2001, as well as a full dance scholarship funded by Mr. William Gillespie. She has danced at Irvine Barclay Theatre in the National Choreographic Initiative and was a semi-finalist at the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards in 2000 and 2001. Ms. Farmen began her dance training in 1989 with Salwa Rizkalla at Southland Ballet Academy.

Brandon Forrest has attended the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts, Colburn Ballet Academy and the San Francisco Ballet School. At 18, he joined Los Angeles Ballet as a company member and performed Sirens under the direction of Josie Walsh. Mr. Forrest spent two years as a personal trainer at LA Fitness and transitioned into performing with Ballet Magique, Long Beach Ballet, Santa Clarita Ballet, Pacific Festival Ballet and Pacific Ballet Dance Theatre. He has also appeared on Glee; USA’s The Moment; a commercial for Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas; and the Ray Ban 50th Anniversary international print campaign. He writes and records original music based on the culturally diverse life he explores via bicycle, health and nutrition. Mr. Forrest can be found at Uplift LA, where he instructs foam rolling/circuit training and teaches dance with Shiva Bagheri. This is his second season with Festival Ballet Theatre.
Tara Ghassemieh began her training in Huntington Beach, California at Orange County Dance Center. She has garnered many honors, titles and awards throughout her 10 years of training: She was a finalist at Youth America Grand Prix national rounds; Teen Miss Dance of America 2004; Dance Masters of America; and National Training Scholar for American Ballet Theatre. At age 16, Tara was offered a full scholarship to ABT, where she danced Le Corsaire, among other works. She performed on Broadway in Movin Out, and was a featured actress on Law and Order SVU, CSI, and Gossip Girl. Tara teaches contemporary dance at Southland Ballet Academy. This is Tara’s seventh season with Festival Ballet Theatre.
Greyson Hanson began his classical ballet training at age nine and expanded into many other dance styles by age 12. Throughout his youth, he was an award-winning competitor in a variety of dance competitions. He is currently attending the University of California, Irvine, where he is double majoring in dance and exercise sciences. While at UCI, Mr. Hanson has received scholarships for his academic achievements and his artistry as a dancer. He has been accepted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and was awarded the William J. Gillespie Scholarship in Ballet Studies. He has performed in many classical ballets such as Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. Mr. Hanson started performing with Festival Ballet Theatre in December of 2015.
Olivia Harrigan began her ballet training at the age of three at Southland Ballet Academy, under the guidance of Salwa Rizkalla. She has performed in numerous Festival Ballet Theatre ballets including Giselle, Coppélia, Don Quixote, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and various mixed repertoire pieces. Ms. Harrigan is currently attending California State University, Long Beach as a health science major. She is an intern at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Long Beach and has

her EMT license. She is the public health chair for The Flying Samaritans, a club that sets up a health clinic every month in Valle de las Palmas, Mexico to help the underserved communities. She aspires to become a pathologist.
Hannah Schiller started her ballet training at the age of eight. Early on in her training, she received many awards at world-class competitions, including The Youth America Grand Prix Award in 2006 and 2009; and gold medals for pas de deux and solo work in Berlin, Germany. She also received the Silver Medal at the 2009 Moscow International Ballet Competition in Moscow, Russia. Hannah is pleased to be performing with Festival Ballet Theatre.
Skye Schmidt, a native of California, began her ballet training under Salwa Rizkalla in 1998 at Southland Ballet Academy, where she learned from numerous world renowned ballet masters including Tatiana Legat; acting head of the Mariinsky Ballet, Yuri Fateyev; Vladimir Malakhov, and Alexei Ratmansky. Skye joined Festival Ballet Theatre in 2012 and has since performed principal, soloist, and corps de ballet roles in The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, Giselle, and Emmy Award-winning Robert Sund’s Alice in Wonderland, among other ballets. She has originated roles in works by exceptional choreographers Lillian Barbeito of Bodytraffic, Andrea Schermoly, Tong Wang and Josie Walsh. Ms. Schmidt graduated from University of California, Irvine with a BFA in Dance Performance. In 2016, she received the prestigious merit-based William J. Gillespie Foundation Scholarship for her outstanding efforts in classical ballet at UCI as well as an award for excellence in dance performance. Skye is also an avid photographer and photographs for the Laguna Dance Festival, FBT and UCI, where her work is often used for major marketing campaigns.

With over 150 film, television and stage credits to his name, Keith David continues to exemplify the character of Hollywood’s greatest actors with a humble ability to remain in demand, both on and off screen. Keith has several high profile projects in the pipeline including Future Man for Hulu, which is slated to premiere on November 14. In the pipeline for 2018 is Marvel’s New Warriors for ABC/Freeform and Night School. He is simultaneously garnering accolades industrywide for his portrayal of the title role as Bishop James Greenleaf on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s hit drama, Greenleaf. Noted for his deep, commanding voice, another dimension of Keith’s career holds him as an Emmy®-winning voice-over artist. The year 2016 saw Keith receive his 3rd Emmy® win for Outstanding Narrator in Jackie Robinson, an acclaimed documentary by Ken Burns. Keith’s strong working relationship with Ken Burns has made him the narrative voice for four of Ken’s epic documentaries and has garnered Keith past Emmy® wins for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for The War, Unforgiveable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson and a nomination for the widely acclaimed Jazz. Keith was also nominated for The Tiger Woods Story and Gargoyles. Keith has lent his voice to Coraline and Disney’s Princess and The Frog. In 2015, David starred as Elroy Patashnik, a washed-up inventor on the 6th season of the hit show Community, followed by a recurring role in Big Time in Hollywood, FL, Comedy Central’s first serialized comedy produced by Ben Stiller. Previously, David starred in the irreverent Fox comedy Enlisted for which he was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor. Some of his dozens of on-screen feature film roles include Oliver Stone’s Academy Award-winning Platoon, Paul Haggis’ Academy Award-winning Crash, as well as The Thing, They Live, There’s Something About Mary, Armageddon, Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, Requiem for a Dream, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Barbershop. A native New Yorker, Mr. David has extensive stage experience and has studied voice and theater at the Juilliard School of Drama. In 1992, he earned a Tony® Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his role in the classic Broadway play Jelly’s Last Jam. Other highlights of Keith’s extensive stage resume include originating the lead role on Broadway in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars and the revival of Mr. Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and Ma Rainey, both directed by Phylicia Rashad. Peter Smith (Piano) served as co-producer and arranger on Molly Ringwald’s Concord Records release of Except Sometimes, her first solo album. He has played on major stages large and small: Iridium (NYC), Jazz Alley (Seattle), Yoshi’s (SF), Blues Alley (DC), Montreal Jazz Festival, Vector Arena (NZ), Melbourne Recital Centre (AUS), and many, many more. Peter was the associate musical director on DUETS, the hit singing competition show on ABC. As associate musical director, Peter has worked directly with Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles, Robin Thicke and John Legend, not only accompanying them and their contestants in rehearsal, but collaborating with them on the musical arrangements for the show. Peter has worked with Roy McCurdy, John B. Williams, Anthony Wilson, Stephon Harris, Gary Wang, Stevie Wonder, Brenna Whitaker, Laura Mace, Maiya Sykes, Gilbert Castellanos, Melissa Morgan, Janis Mann, Ben Harper, John Beasley, James Tormé, Terron Brooks, Kenny Burrell, Bobby Watson, Dwight Trible, Keith David, Alexys Schwartz, Michael Beardon, and many of the best sidemen in Los Angeles.
John Storie (Guitar). For over a decade, John Storie has been an active contributor to the jazz and classical music scenes of Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles, California. As a founding member of the New West Guitar Group — a guitar trio based in Los Angles — John has performed across the country and has gained recognition as a well-respected jazz guitarist. Over the years, he has been recognized by the Downbeat Student Music Awards, the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, the Jazz Society of Oregon, Cascade Festival of Music, Guitar Foundation of America, the ASCAP Foundation, and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. In 2005, John was selected as one of 10 semi-finalists in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition. His performances with the New West Guitar Group have taken him to Japan, Canada and Germany. New West Guitar Group continues to be a driving force on the global music scene. In addition to New West, John currently performs with Spencer Day, Renee Olstead, Sara Gazarek, Kathleen Grace, and many other LA-based jazz musicians. In 2010, John entered California Institute of the Arts and completed his MFA in Jazz Studies. He currently teaches with Education Through Music — Los Angeles, and in his private studio in Los Angeles. In 2015, New West Guitar Group teamed up with Gretchen Parlato, Sara Gazarek, Tierney Sutton, Becca Stevens and Peter Eldridge on Send One Your Love, an album of arrangements of traditional and contemporary standards. Alex Frank (Bass). He may only be in his mid-20’s, but Alex Frank has already established himself as a first-call bassist for film (Jersey Boys, Black Nativity), television (Modern Family, Friends With Better Lives), and records (Bruce Forman, Dave Damiani). Along with pianist Peter Smith and guitarist John Storie, Alex tours with the group Too Marvelous for Words, a tribute to the original Nat King Cole Trio, which has begun touring nationally. Alex has also become an in-demand accompanist for jazz singers

Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. (America’s Got Talent winner, 2011), Renee Olstead (TV’s Still Standing, The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Spencer Day, Jackie Ryan, Erin Boheme and James Tormé. For singer Dave Damiani, Alex co-produced his newest album, Midlife Crisis, as well as performing on all 13 tracks and co-writing the title song. This album features “I’ve Been Around,” a new song by Oscar and Grammy winners Johnny Mandel (“The Shadow of Your Smile”) and Marilyn and Alan Bergman (“The Way We Were”), which Alex and Johnny Mandel co-arranged. Alex is Damiani’s musical director and main arranger. Additionally, Alex is the bassist in jazz trios with pianist Tamir Hendelman (Barbra Streisand) and guitarist Bruce Forman (Ray Brown); and has recorded with them as well. In fact, he is the bassist on Forman’s latest album, The Book of Forman, also featuring Marvin “Smitty” Smith on drums. His touring has taken him around the world, with performances at such prestigious venues as New York’s Café Carlyle, Seattle’s Jazz Alley, and the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Robert Perkins (Drums). A drummer well known for his versatility, Robert Perkins graduated with honors from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and earned a master’s degree in music from the University of Southern California. Throughout his education, Robert Perkins studied with such talents as Michael Carvin, Leon Ndugu Chancler, John Clayton and Billy Higgins. Robert Perkins has worked with Michael Bublé, Bobby Watson, Tierney Sutton, The Clayton Brothers, Vanessa Rubin, Ingrid Jensen, Toni Braxton, David Sancious, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, Eric Reed, Mary Stallings, Chris Botti, Laura Pausini, Leon Parker, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Dr. Dre, Charlie Hunter and Larry Williams. Kroma Quartet Kroma Quartet (est. 2014) is comprised of talented, strong and diverse women of color. They are all classically trained, but perform and arrange music from many different genres. Collectively, Kroma Quartet has performed at the Grammy’s, on American Idol, at The Music Center, The Viper Room, and the EXPO Center in South L.A. The Quartet has done session work with major recording artists and has played on major motion picture soundtracks, TV shows, and at private events. Kroma Quartet’s goal is to bring diverse music played by a diverse group of musicians to communities throughout southern California. Crystal Alforque (Violin) is a San Diego native who has performed on The Voice, American Idol, the Grammy’s and the Oscars. She’s worked with recording artists such as Beyonce and Shanice and has toured with Stevie Wonder. Crystal also has a budding commercial acting career and can be seen on several national TV commercials.
Nadira Kimberly (Violin), originally from St. Louis, teaches privately throughout the San Fernando Valley and has performed on The Voice, American Idol, and with Lady Gaga at the Grammy’s. She also composes music (“Cry of the Crimson String” — which can be found on iTunes), has worked with major recording artists, and is a fantastic improviser.
Nikki Shorts (Viola) is a Los Angeles native who recently resigned from a rewarding teaching career with the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Education Department as a teaching artist, conductor and curriculum writer. She has performed with Lady Gaga at the Grammy’s. Nikki has also played on several major motion picture soundtracks and has performed with the Pacific Opera, and at weddings and special events. Nikki is also a realtor in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Michelle Rearick (Cello), a Michigan native, is a talented performer and string arranger. She’s performed at the Grammy’s and on American Idol, and has played on several major motion picture soundtracks. She teaches privately throughout Los Angeles and works as a teaching artist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Education Department. Active since 2003, the Michael Dessen Trio features a unique blend of intricate composition, open improvisation and live electronics. Dessen has collaborated with Tordini and Weiss for many years, composing music to feature their individual voices and gradually developing a critically-acclaimed chemistry. The Trio’s music integrates live electronic processing and sampling and moves fluidly between the composed and the improvised, navigating wide-ranging aesthetic terrain in immersive, often continuous live sets. Tonight’s performance will premiere new quintet compositions that Dessen created in order to extend and transform the Trio’s sound by featuring special guests Nicole Mitchell and Joshua White.

When Life’s Door Opens is a multi-movement work composed by creative flutist/composer Nicole Mitchell. It is written for a chamber ensemble and three vocalists from contrasting improvisational traditions. The suite illuminates the labyrinth for those at the “crossroads” of choosing a life-path based on their passion — a path that may not be popular, easily supported, or clearly promising of reward. The creative libretto for When Life’s Door Opens is based on a long-form poem of the same name, also by Nicole Mitchell. When Life’s Door Opens was commissioned by Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Orchestra. It premiered at the Roulette in Brooklyn, in April 2013, and enjoyed its European premiere at Teatro Manzoni in Milan in December 2013. This Irvine Barclay Theatre performance is a West Coast premiere.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS Nicole Mitchell (Flute) is a creative flutist, composer and educator. Founder of the critically-acclaimed Black Earth Ensemble, Black Earth Strings, Sonic Projections and Ice Crystal, she composes for contemporary ensembles of varied instrumentation and size (from solo to orchestra and Big Band) while incorporating improvisation and a wide aesthetic expression. Mitchell’s compositions bridge sound worlds between the familiar and the unknown by integrating new music with sounds from the legacy of jazz, gospel, pop and African percussion. As a flutist, Mitchell develops new improvisational languages through the coupling of her voice with the instrument. A member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM Chicago) since 1995, Mitchell has worked with contemporary musicians including George Lewis, Steve Coleman, James Newton, Archie Shepp, Anthony Davis, Bill Dixon, Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Ed Wilkerson, David Boykin, Rob Mazurek, and Hamid Drake. She has been commissioned by the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, the French Ministry of Culture, Chamber Music America, and ICE. A recipient of the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts (2011), and the Doris Duke Award (2012), Mitchell was named “Top Flutist” (2010– 2017) by Downbeat magazine and the Jazz Journalist Association (2010-2017). A professor of music at UC Irvine, she is a core faculty member in Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology. Michael Dessen (Trombone, Computer, Composition) is a composer and trombonist who creates music for improvisers. In addition to composing for his own trio and many collective projects, Dessen collaborates with diverse bands as a trombonist and also performs solo on digibone, an animistic world of slide trombone and live electronics. His compositions include networked “score-streams” that are displayed dynamically on screens for performers to interpret, and he has been involved as a composer, improviser and co-director in numerous telematic concerts that link performers in distant locations via high-definition internet technologies. Dessen’s music has been supported by commissions from organizations including New Music USA, Chamber Music America, and the Fromm Foundation and released by labels including Clean Feed Records, Cuneiform, and pfMENTUM. He studied with Yusef Lateef, George Lewis and Anthony Davis, and holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the University of California, San Diego. Since 2006, Dessen has been a faculty member at the University of California, Irvine, where he co-founded a new graduate program in Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology (ICIT). 22 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
Mark de Clive-Lowe (Piano, Keyboards). Musical polymath Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL) seems an impossibility at first sight − juggling piano, synths, live sampling and beat making all on-the-fly, brought to life with a casual ease that’s mindboggling. The Japanese-New Zealander was raised primarily in New Zealand, where he learnt piano from a young age, developing an avid passion for jazz through his father’s record collection. In high school, he fell in love with Native Tongues hip-hop and early UK jungle – laying the foundation for what was to come next…. During his hugely formative decade at the epicenter of London’s underground music scene, MdCL helped evolve broken beat alongside some of the UK’s most forward-thinking trailblazers, establishing himself as a new voice in progressive electronic music and leading global tastemaker DJ Gilles Peterson to designate him “the man behind a million great tunes.” Since 2008, MdCL has called Los Angeles, California home, where his acclaimed club night CHURCH has taken his signature sound of technology and beat-infused jazz mash-up from coast to coast and around the globe. Equal parts pianist, composer and live production wizard, MdCL’s sets are a treat for the listeners, the dancers, the progressives and the purists alike − as he casually erases the lines between genres and eras. Whether he’s remixing classic Blue Note Records in real time, on stage joined by the likes of Kamasi Washington, Nia Andrews or Eric Harland, improvising solo piano or creating live soundtracks to classic film material, MdCL is an artist in constant evolution, reaching for that next level. Having contributed to over 300 releases, to call MdCL prolific is something of an under-statement. MdCL has been featured at festivals including Montreal Jazz, North Sea Jazz, Uberjazz, Tokyo Crossover Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Atlanta and is an established artist performing globally from South Africa to Japan and across the US and Europe. Ras G (Electronics) is one of the definitive producers on the Los Angeles music scene, a co-founder of the Poo-Bah label, and hip-hop beat-maker who digs probably deeper than anyone into the worlds of free jazz, jazz fusion and afrofuturism. The prolific producer currently has two albums on Brainfeeder, two released by Poo-Bah, and several on Leaving Records, including the beat tape series Raw Fruit.
Calvin Gantt (Spoken Word) is a writer, public speaker, radio talk show host, community organizer and interfaith minister who has dedicated his life to being of service to others. He received a BA in Sociology and Anthropology from Lake Forest College in Illinois, and graduated magna cum laude with an MA in Community Development from North Park University, also located in Illinois. He is co-founder and president of By Grace Creations, an organization dedicated to providing education about health and wellbeing, and to promoting understanding among diverse cultures through arts and communication. He currently has a radio show on KUCI.
Jeff Gauthier (Violin). Violinist, composer and producer Jeff Gauthier has worked with a wide range of musicians in a variety of creative contexts in a career that has spanned over 25 years. As an improvising violinist, he has performed and recorded with Yusef Lateef & Adam Rudolph on the album The World at Peace for Meta Records, The Alex Cline Ensemble on albums for ECM and Cryptogramophone, and The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, Quartetto Stig and the Cline Gauthier Stinson trio, all for Nine Winds Records. His own ensemble, the Jeff Gauthier Goatette, has recorded three CD’s including Internal Memo and The Present for Nine Winds Records and Mask for Cryptogramophone. As a founding member with Nels Cline, Alex Cline and Eric von Essen of the ensemble Quartet Music, a creative presence in Los Angeles for 12 years, Gauthier recorded four albums, received two NEA grants, was a member of the California Arts Council touring roster, and performed twice as soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony. Gauthier has worked with such luminaries as Alan Broadbent, Nels Cline, Mark Dresser, Peter Erskine, Jimmy Rowles, Stacy Rowles, Alan Pasqua, Don Preston and many others, recording CD’s for Cryptogramophone, Delos and Nine Winds Records. As a classical violinist, Gauthier has performed with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, the Long Beach Symphony, the Oregon Bach Festival and the Carmel Bach Festival. Gauthier is a graduate of California Institute of the Arts.
Aquilla Sadalla (Vocals, Spoken Word) is a dynamic performance artist who has helped to cultivate an entire legacy of creative music using the first instrument: The Voice. Over the many years, through many a song, Aquilla has reminded us to “remember the breath” and its power as a featured vocalist with Samana (1992-98), The Circle of Sound, Thrill Jockey’s National Trust (2005) and The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Moving gracefully through an entire life of music, Aquilla brings together a 7-piece unit named “Sedallah” (a respelling of Sadalla, which translates to mean “angel of God”). Sedallah performs using flute, reeds, keyboard/synth, guitar, electric bass guitar, drums/ percussion and vocals. Stylistically drawing from Latin-jazz, soul, electronic, Caribbean and African blues harmonies and rhythms, Sadallah furthers “freedom of the mind” and “movement of the soul.”
Benjamin J. Shepherd (Bass). Born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand, Benjamin J. Shepherd started playing bass when he was seven years old. Eleven years later he moved to Los Angeles to study at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) under the watchful eye of bass heavy weights Charlie Haden, Alphonso Johnson and Darek Oles. Since graduating from CalArts, Benjamin has become one of the busiest and most in-demand bassists in Los Angeles. He has worked on stage and in the studio with such artists as David Archuleta, Lee Ritenour, Mike Keneally, Mike Stern, Billy Childs, Patrice Rushen, Bob Sheppard, John Beasley,
The Monk’estra, Virgil Donati, Hadrien Feraud, Chance The Rapper, School Boy Q, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Miguel Atwood Ferguson and many more.
Dexter Story (Drum Set) is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, songwriter, producer and music director. After earning an undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley and performing with a diverse array of musicians including Wynton Marsalis, Ravi Coltrane, Ernie Watts, John Stubblefield, Slide Hampton, Jeff Narell, Eric Reed and Olivier Gatto, Story also worked in multiple facets of the music industry (from marketing director at Priority, Def Jam and Bad Boy Records to talent buyer at the legendary LA club Temple Bar) enjoying 15 years at the epicenter of popular music culture. Story collaborates regularly with composer/producer/DJ Carlos Niño as co-founder of the breakthrough experimental production team The Life Force Trio and has toured, performed and/or recorded with Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Quadron, Madlib’s Yesterdays New Quintet, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Dwight Trible, Marie Daulne (Zap Mama), Mark de Clive-Lowe, Kelis, Mocky, Sam Barsh, Steve Spacek, The Long Lost (Daedelus’ and Laura Darling’s duet), Build An Ark, Rumer Willis, Kamasi Washington, Gaslamp Killer, Nick Rosen, and Les Nubians, among others. He released his debut spiritual soul album, Seasons, in February 2013 on Kindred Spirits and released his East African-influenced album, Wondem, on Soundway Records in October 2015. His latest and most notable endeavors are as music director of the summer 2015’s stellar Wattstax Revisited and summer 2016’s Soy Africano concerts at Grand Performances, and producing Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings artist Daymé Arocena’s acclaimed album Cubafonia. Story also works as artivist in residence/event producer at Community Coalition of South Los Angeles and was recently accepted into the 2017-2019 cohort in APAP USC Leadership Fellows Program.
Christopher Tordini (Bass) is an in-demand bassist on the New York music scene, where he tours and records with jazz icons as well as a diverse range of emerging musicians. He has worked with numerous ensembles including Andy Milne’s Dapp Theory, Greg Osby, Jeremy Pelt, Ari Hoening, Steve Lehman, Jim Black, Andrew D’Angelo, and the Becca Stevens Band, as well as being a long-term collaborator in projects led by drummer/composer Tyshawn Sorey and trombonist/composer Michael Dessen. His new album with the Chris Tordini Trio featuring Becca Stevens and Greg Ruggerio will be released by Newvelle Records in 2017. Shana Tucker (Cello) is a singer-songwriter and cellist who credits her genre-bending ChamberSoul™ journey to the influences of her jazz and classical roots interwoven with 80’s and 90’s pop music, movie soundtracks and world music. Shana’s style and sound has been described as a mash-up of Dianne Reeves, Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, with an efficient complexity that is reminiscent

of Bill Withers. She has studied at Howard University and CUNY – Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College, and released her debut CD, SHiNE, in 2011. Due to its broad appeal and genre-defying nature, SHiNE was picked up in 2015 by Boston-based jazz label and distribution team, the Jazz Urbane Recordings/SUGO Music Group to be remastered and reissued as one of their premier projects. Shana devotes a considerable amount of her time to working with students in schools, universities, community centers and summer camps throughout the year as part of her mission to promote arts education programming for students of all ages. She is a recipient of two Nevada Arts Council grants, including the prestigious Artist Fellowship grant in 2014 and a Professional Development grant in 2016 for her exemplary work as a performing artist. Dan Weiss (Drums) received a bachelor’s degree in jazz percussion with a minor in classical composition from the Manhattan School of Music. Soon after getting his formal education, he began touring the world and recording with musicians such as David Binney, Lee Konitz, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Miguel Zenon, Kenny Werner and many others. In addition to drums, Weiss has been studying the tabla under his guru, Pandit Samir Chatterjee, for almost 20 years. This apprenticeship has been a major influence on his musical aesthetic, exemplified on two of his records, on
which he performs classical Indian repertoire on the drum set. Weiss has led his trio, which includes Jacob Sacks on piano and Thomas Morgan on bass, for over a decade. He has released two acclaimed albums of his large ensemble compositions on Pi Recordings: Fourteen (2014) and Sixteen: Drummers Suite (2016). Joshua White (Piano). For the past several years, Joshua White has been in demand as one of southern California’s most creative and technically accomplished pianists. In 2011, White entered the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition in Washington D.C., ultimately placing second out of 160 competitors from around the world. He performs regularly at Dizzy’s (San Diego), Blue Whale (Los Angeles), The Loft (La Jolla), the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library (La Jolla), and numerous other venues on the West Coast. Joshua has also worked / recorded with Christian McBride, Dayna Stephens, Ambrose Akinmusire, Walter Smith III, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Tim Lefebvre, Joe LaBarbera, Hugh Ragin, Anthony Wilson, Derrick Hodge and many more.

Jack Jones is one of the greatest singers of all time − a true singers’ singer and luminary in the music industry. This five-time nominated, two-time Grammy Award winner performs around the globe to sold-out audiences in venues ranging from jazz clubs to the London Palladium. Jack Jones is the very definition of a complete and total entertainer. The New York Times raves, “He is arguably the most technically accomplished male pop singer.” The L.A. Jazz Scene: “The audience stood and cheered the artistry of Jack Jones and his fine backing musicians. It was one of the best evenings I ever spent in Catalina’s. Jack Jones delivered an exciting, well-paced program of fine classic tunes. Bravo!” As an American icon who’s known throughout the world, Jack was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 13, 1989. He is also renowned as a leading interpreter of musical theater with acclaimed performances in Guys and Dolls, South Pacific, She Loves Me, and The Pajama Game. He also starred as Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha in the national tour. Over the years, he has guest-starred on countless episodic and/or comedy television series, including a gueststarring role in the British comedy film Cruise of the Gods.
Admirers of Jones’ talent include artists who influenced him as a young singer. Frank Sinatra said, “Jack is one of the major singers of our time”; and Mel Torme called him “The greatest pure singer in the world.” He has performed and recorded popular theme songs for film and TV including “Love with a Proper Stranger” and “The Love Boat.” In 2008, the world’s most recognized hotel brand, Holiday Inn Hotels and Resorts, launched their “M.B.A.” (Master in Business Accommodations) marketing campaign with the timeless voice of Jack Jones singing a new recording of “The Love Boat” theme. Jones also shared his voice with a whole new generation when he sang “Boat of Romance,” as part of an episode on the Emmy-nominated Disney Channel animated musical television series Phineas and Ferb.
With over 70 recorded albums, of which 17 charted on Billboard’s Top 20, Jack consistently performs on sold-out world tours including a tremendously successful tour of the UK in 2016, which reached capacity crowds. He charms audiences with his wit and sensitivity, but it’s his vocal prowess that makes him a formidable powerhouse singer. After all, there is only one Jack Jones. Christian Jacob (Piano) first gained widespread exposure as co-leader, arranger and pianist with the Tierney Sutton Band. While recording eight critically acclaimed CD’s with the band, Christian also built a substantial career as a solo artist and leader. He has arranged and conducted around the world, performing with big bands, symphonies and even with the King of Thailand. Born in Lorraine, France, Christian Jacob began playing classical music at age four and became immersed in the music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, whose harmonic universe was influential on jazz. “I was 9 or 10 when I discovered jazz,” Christian reminisces, “and the very first thing that appealed to me was the harmony, the chords. The first time I heard Oscar Peterson, I kept going to the store to order the part. Of course I never received it; later, when I learned it was improvised, I couldn’t believe it. “I’ve always had perfect pitch, so I was known for hearing anything and knowing the notes. However, my training was not open to improvisation. It was ‘learn the piece, and then interpret it,’ he says. “Even at that age they would basically interpret it for you. In retrospect that probably taught me what is the basic musical feel.” Though studying classical music, the young pianist continued to play jazz “as a hobby”; he worked in combos in Lorraine and began to develop a style. “Dave Brubeck was my first discovery,” he has said, “then Oscar Peterson was a different dimension. I could hear his classical technique; his personality was there too. What he says, he means, and you can hear him having so much fun doing it.”
After graduating with First Prize from the Paris Conservatory, Christian took the risk of going to America to study jazz. It was at Berklee that Christian shed a lot of his classical 26 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Ferguson plucked Christian from the ranks of an early 1990’s edition of Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau band to be the first featured artist in the “Maynard Ferguson Presents” series on Concord Records. He produced Christian’s first two trio recordings: Maynard Ferguson Presents Christian Jacob and Time Lines. After leaving Maynard Ferguson’s band, Christian quickly began performing and recording with many of today’s jazz legends: Flora Purim and Airto Moreira, Randy Brecker, Miroslav Vitous and Bill Holman to name just a few. By the mid 1990’s, Christian had teamed up with vocalist Tierney Sutton, drummer Ray Brinker and bassist Trey Henry to form the Tierney Sutton Band. Later, a second bassist, Kevin Axt joined the group. The band became known for its sophisticated, refreshing arrangements, and the obvious musical joy they felt when playing together. As co-leaders, they developed into a tightly knit group.
In addition to receiving five Grammy nominations for his work with the Tierney Sutton Band, Christian released three more outstanding trio recordings with Trey Henry and Ray Brinker: Styne & Mine, a collection of Christian’s originals and music by Jule Styne; Contradictions, a look at the original compositions of renowned pianist Michel Petrucciani; and Live in Japan, recorded in 2008. One of Christian’s newest collaborations has been as musical director for Broadway legend Betty Buckley. Branching out into the musical theater genre has proven to be a natural fit for Christian, as it allows him to draw beautifully from his classical background. After contributing to more than fifty recordings, Christian decided that it was finally time to focus on a project he’d been pondering for years − a solo piano recording. Beautiful Jazz: a private concert was released in 2014 on the WilderJazz label.
Chris Colangelo (Bass) is one of the genuine masters on his instrument. The first thing you notice about Chris’s playing — his tone, deeply resonant with astonishing articulation across the instrument’s sonic register. Once you adjust to
such reverberant force, you recognize that this is a musician with serious chops ... that hard to define, never forgotten lyric quality that separates yeoman time-keepers from bassists with seductive narrative power.
Born in Camden, New Jersey, Chris attended Rowan University, majoring in jazz performance. Then a resident of the Philadelphia area, Chris was part of the local jazz scene, with session work throughout the Delaware Valley, including gigs in Atlantic City. After moving to Los Angeles in late ’91, Chris began performing and traveling with heavyweights such as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Count Basie Orchestra, The Tonight Show Band, Yusef Lateef, Bob Brookmeyer, Jimmy Cleveland, Alex Acuna, Roy McCurdy, Doc Severinsen, Ernie Watts, Kei Akagi, Les McCann, Richie Cole, Sal Marquez, Joe La Barbera, Bob Mintzer, Arturo Sandoval, Tom Scott and Peter Erskine, among many others. Chris’ first solo album, 2 trios + 1 — Live (BluePort Jazz), recorded in 2000, earned plaudits at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas soon after its appearance in nationwide distribution. Legendary pianist Jane Getz joined Chris for this “in concert” recording, along with percussionist Dave Hocker and saxophonist Chuck Manning. In 2010, Chris recorded his second solo CD entitled Elaine’s Song (C-note Records). It is comprised of mostly original material with a couple of jazz standards thrown in. Pianist John Beasley and saxophonist Bob Sheppard are featured on this latest effort. Chris received rave reviews
for the CD (including Downbeat magazine), not only as a bassist but also as a composer. Kendall Kay (Drums). “Kendall Kay is a drummer, who, if the rest of us can swing, gives us the permit. He is solid and tasteful, with a great sense of time. He is a very quiet person and the perfect gentleman. Buddy Rich, who was a close friend of mine, would have admired his sense of calm…and, of course, his playing.” – Jack Jones. Born in Durban, South Africa, Kendall Kay moved to the United States in 1983 to study jazz at North Texas State University. He moved to Los Angeles in 1987 and has become a U.S. citizen in recent years. One of the most versatile drummers around, Kendall is much in demand and has recorded and performed with such artists as Poncho Sanchez, Cecilia Coleman, Steve Huffstetter, Bob Sheppard, Kenny Burrell, Phil Upchurch, Allan Broadbent, Kyle Eastwood, Mundell Lowe and Rickie Lee Jones. Kendall is also a member of the Ron Eschete Trio. He is currently endorsing D.W. Drums, Remo Drum Heads, Vic Firth Sticks and Paiste Cymbals.
