2023-24 Year in Review

Page 1

OUR MISSION

Irvine Barclay Theatre is a leading presenter of performances by diverse and exceptional artists. It offers a state-of-theart venue for community cultural organizations and university programs, expanding the scope, availability, and appreciation of the performing arts in Orange County.

Dear Friends,

The Barclay staff and I are pleased to share our annual Year in Review — a snapshot of the hundreds of entertaining performances and special events, as well as some of the thousands of cherished memories made at Irvine Barclay Theatre during our 2023–24 season.

Over the past 12 months, the Barclay has welcomed 88,000 patrons of all ages to enjoy over 180 compelling programs spanning a wide variety of genres, disciplines, and languages. Standing ovations for Pat Metheny’s mastery of the guitar; Step Afrika’s thrilling upbeat energy; improvisational hijinks from comedians Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood; Ballet Jazz Montréal's Dance Me tribute to Leonard Cohen; The Mākaha Sons’ authentic and timeless Hawaiian melodies; author Anne Lamott’s wit and insight; and The Ten Tenors’ dynamic spin on favorite melodies were highlights of the IBT Presents season.

This season’s biggest coup was the opening night when Shakti, the international musical ensemble founded by guitarist John McLaughlin and tabla master Zakir Hussain, brought its 50th anniversary world tour to the Barclay. A sold-out crowd, more than half of whom were experiencing the Barclay’s intimate atmosphere for the first time, was mesmerized by the musicians’ remarkable artistry. It was an inspiring and rare opportunity that showcased everything that makes an evening at the Barclay a uniquely memorable experience.

As always, the Barclay staff, Board of Directors and I want to share our gratitude for the generous financial support that each year makes it possible for the Barclay to thrive as an exceptional destination for audiences of all ages, as a top-quality venue for professional artists, and as a welcoming home for all of the community organizations that perform on the Barclay stage. We also thank our partners – the City of Irvine and UC Irvine – whose investment in the Barclay brought the theater to life, and continues to place the performing arts front and center in this region’s civic life. In particular, we’d like to thank our Premier Patron Society and Barclay Associates. Their philanthropic leadership and their special role as ambassadors for the value that the Barclay brings to Orange County and Irvine are of immeasurable benefit to the venue and to the community.

Whether this past season with the Barclay was your first, or your fifteenth, please know it is your energy, enthusiasm, and support which transform the Barclay from simply a building into Orange County’s intimate home for the performing arts. Thank you, again, for joining us on our journey this past year. We look forward to seeing you often in the coming year and to all the lasting memories we will create together.

Best regards,

Connecting Communities Through the Performing Arts

DONOR PROFILE GORAN MATIJASEVIC Q&A

Members of the Barclay Premier Patron Society are the behind-the-scenes-angels who, through their generous unrestricted support make it possible for Irvine Barclay Theatre to provide essential services to the community through the performing arts. Through their generosity and advocacy, Premier Patron Society members ensure the performing arts continue to thrive and inspire all generations of Orange County residents.

Since its opening day in September of 1990, the Barclay has thrived as an intimate venue for the community’s social, artistic and educational activities. Along with providing entertaining and memorable experiences of artistic and social importance for discerning patrons, the Barclay offers professional production, marketing and sales support for all its community partners.

None of this would be possible without dedicated fans of the Barclay who believe in the power of the performing arts to transform people’s lives.

One such member of the Barclay Premier Patron Society is Goran Matijasevic, Ph.D., MBA, who works at UC Irvine at the intersection of business, academia, and the arts, and is a strong advocate for cultural enrichment in Orange County. As executive director of the UCI Chief Executive Roundtable, he connects UC Irvine to the business community and also has a passion for introducing students and others to the performing arts in the community.

In this Q&A, Goran talks about his early exposure to the arts, his relationship with the Barclay, and his enduring commitment to introducing others to a variety of performing arts experiences. His story illustrates how one person can advance an entire community’s relationship with the performing arts.

WITH GORAN MATIJASEVIC

Q. What draws you to the arts?

GM: My parents exposed my brother and me to the classical arts, from concerts to opera to museum exhibits. Later I was drawn to more modern music and learned to appreciate various genres.

Q. How did you first become involved with Irvine Barclay Theatre?

GM: The Barclay Theatre opened in 1990, just as I was finishing my graduate studies at UCI. I enjoyed several performances during that time and for a few years afterward while I continued working at UCI. Later, my job in the industry took me to North San Diego County. However, when I returned to work at UCI in 2002, I reconnected with the Barclay. This reconnection wasn't just for the performances by the Claire Trevor School of the Arts but also for much of the Barclay's original programming. When the Barclay introduced new programming in 2015, my late wife Susan and I found ourselves enjoying a wide range of musical genres and talks there, and we began supporting the theater.

Q. What inspires you to support the arts and the Barclay in particular?

GM: I believe arts nourish the soul, and for me an evening performance provides a perfect end to a busy and frantic day, a moment when I put away devices and don’t have interruptions. I have also witnessed how friends and UCI students I bring to performances are inspired by what they see, which in turn inspires me to support the arts. I was inspired to increase my support after seeing performances of Trio Barclay, the theater’s ensemble-in-residence. At the same time, I truly appreciate and enjoy the diverse programming presented by the Barclay. This year, I especially enjoyed the wonderful concerts by Shakti, Pat Metheny, Piaf: The Show, Diane Schuur, Blue Note Records 85th Anniversary tour, and Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. I was recently inspired to join the seat-naming campaign, creating a lasting memory of Susan’s and my attendance at some of the great performances.

Q. You’re a member of the Premier Patron Society, which is comprised of many of the Barclay’s most ardent supporters. What have you enjoyed most about your involvement?

GM: For someone like me who attends such a variety of wonderful presentations at the Barclay, the Premier Patron Society is a great opportunity to get a behind-thescenes look at shows, meet talented artists and introduce others to the performing arts in a meaningful way.

Q. What role do you see the Barclay playing in our community?

GM: Irvine Barclay Theatre offers numerous opportunities to connect with the local community through its excellent programming. Additionally, it serves as a premier venue for many performances by UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts (Dance, UCI Symphony, Opera, UCI Choral Music) as well as hosting events organized by other UCI units, such as the annual UCI Physical Sciences Reines Nobel Lecture, the student-organized TEDxUCIrvine, and the UCI Supreme Court in Review. The Barclay also hosts a range of community productions every year, which invites the community to our campus.

The Barclay’s patrons come from all walks of life, united by a shared passion for the performing arts and a commitment to enriching the community. They share common values of cultural appreciation, community support, and a dedication to making the arts accessible to everyone.

No one exemplifies this better than Goran Matijasevic. His dedication to the arts and significant contributions to Irvine Barclay Theatre have made a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of Orange County. His involvement extends beyond financial support. He is truly an ambassador for the performing arts, playing a pivotal role in the success of the Barclay and the broader community by introducing new audiences to the world of music, dance, theater, and more.

We thank Goran for all his tireless efforts.
