2021–22 INYEAR REVIEW
MISSIONOUR Irvine Barclay Theatre is a leading presenter of performances by diverse and exceptional artists, providing a state-of-the-art venue for community cultural organizations and university programs, and broadening the scope, availability and appreciation of performing arts in Orange County.
—Jerry Mandel, Ph.D. President
And a successful season it was!
The number of public events that took place in the theater this past season reached record levels. We presented an outstanding slate of popular entertainment programs, classical music concerts, global music, jazz, dance recitals and competitions, cabaret performances, lectures, corporate meetings, and community events. Our return season was also made successful, in very large part, because of the support we received from all of you — through record levels of generous contributions and ticket purchases.
IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE 2021–22 YEAR IN REVIEW | 2
Thank you, again, for your belief in Irvine Barclay Theatre and know we truly look forward to welcoming you soon and often to more wonderful events and performances this season.
Dear Friends, As we are all aware, the past two years have been unlike any others in our memories. After a full year without live performances for live audiences, 2021–22 marked Irvine Barclay Theatre’s re-opening to performers and audiences.
The importance of this past year for the Barclay cannot be overstated. During our time away we re-made the Barclay — its physical plant, its programming, its partnerships and its relationships with the community — from the ground up. Our programmatic success shows the Barclay remains an essential cultural asset for our community. As we now move forward to our 2022–23 season, we renew our pledge to work every day to develop and implement programs that improve individual and civic life throughout Orange County. As a small “thank you,” for all your help in making the Barclay’s return a spectacular one, I’d like to take this moment to share with you some highlights from this past season. In the following pages we have collected information and images illustrating the wide variety of year-round Barclay activities that we hope you will enjoy. I think you will find that this “Year in Review” conveys our sense of gratitude for the year just past, and our excitement for the one to come.

Eugene and Carol both immigrated to the United States from Korea with their families when they were children. They are grateful for the opportunities they’ve had to pursue their education (both are UC Irvine alumni) and to build their business. The experience of growing up in immigrant families underlies their desire to give back to the programs, places, and people that have shaped their lives. “You can’t have an agenda,” Eugene responded when we asked how he and Carol balance their many commitments with enthusiasm and sincere dedication. “You really need to serve and you really need to love it. There’s a lot more involved than just putting your name out there and writing a check.”
Eugene and Carol firmly believe that, as Irvine community members, they have a responsibility to be involved with and to encourage others to support important local causes. Eugene emphasizes, “It really isn’t about just one person or the money that’s coming in. It’s creating awareness about something meaningful we want the community to know about. Very simple, but sometimes simple can be the hardest thing.”
DONOR PROFILE EUGENE & CAROL CHOI
When people came to the show, they were so engaged. Trio Barclay was magnificent. They were playing right to us in the cozy Barclay, and it was just after the COVID shutdown. It was a very emotional day for a lot of people.”
Eugene and Carol share a love for music and consider it an important medium for enriching communities. Carol says, “Music brings an incredible warmth, and it communicates. It’s the one language that is universal. It touches all our emotions in so many different ways. It’s a counseling tool.” Music is an integral part of the Chois’ daily family lives. “I grew up playing the piano, both of my kids were in choir and play the piano, and Eugene grew up with music.” Eugene is the founder of the Armonia Singers quartet, a nonprofit ensemble he established four years ago, comprised of three professional classical singers and an experienced amateur – Eugene himself! Through their service at the Barclay, Eugene and Carol hope to make the theater and its programming familiar and accessible to a much broader audience. Eugene shares, “Our goal is to have everyone join us – to be able to have that access – and to know what a wonderful place the Barclay is.” Carol summarizes what she thinks sets the Barclay apart as a performing arts venue: “During the holidays you go to see "The Nutcracker" and watch all the ballet students, which is always very, very special. Then you have Renée Fleming. She was just off the charts! So there’s the beauty of the Barclay. You have your local groups and students, and then you have world renowned Renée Fleming. I love that we have so many different branches, yet we’re this one Irvine community. All together. And with a place that’s community driven like the Barclay, people enjoy it more…and it’s so close to our homes!”
Thank you, Eugene and Carol, for generously contributing your time and resources to the Barclay and those we serve. We are grateful for your partnership as we continue to showcase excellent and interesting performances by today’s top artists, especially our very own Trio Barclay. Your on-the-ground advocacy has been instrumental in helping the new ensemble get off to a stellar inaugural year. We look forward to working together with you both on many exciting projects and performances to come.
“This is everybody’s community. Take care of it. Pay it forward.” That is the core philosophy that drives Irvine Barclay Theatre board member Eugene Choi and his wife Carol’s exemplary commitment to community service and leadership. To the Chois, philanthropy is so much more than a financial investment – it is the wholehearted contribution of one’s time, talents, and hard work toward a worthy cause. Eugene currently serves on the Barclay’s Board of Directors. Carol is an active board member at Pacific Symphony, was formerly on the board of Irvine Public School Foundation and has served as president of the Irvine Korean Parents Association. The Chois also support a diverse group of national and international charity organizations through their global company, United Exchange Corporation.
It only made sense that when the Barclay introduced Trio Barclay, its first Ensemble-in-Residence last summer, Eugene and Carol stepped up as Artist Sponsors for the debut performance and took the lead in spreading the word. To help promote the new chamber ensemble, Carol rolled up her sleeves and got to work: “I contacted literally everybody I know. I sent out 250 emails, made 100 phone calls, and drove around to drop off flyers and tickets. It’s intense but it works!
