John Pizzarelli Salute to Sinatra & Jobim @50

Fred Hersch Trio

Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 8pm

Friday, March 29, 2019 at 8pm

A 12-time Grammy Award nominee, Fred Hersch is an artist of unbounded imagination. A powerful creative force, he has shaped the course of jazz over more than three decades as an improviser, composer and recording artist.

Two of John Pizzarelli’s greatest influences, Frank Sinatra and the bossa nova composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, joined forces in 1967 to present a softer, sultrier side of Sinatra on the heels of “That’s Life” and “Strangers in the Night.” Half a century later, John Pizzarelli is celebrating that unique gathering and pays tribute to those original recordings.

Proclaimed “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade” by Vanity Fair, Hersch has long defined jazz’s creative edge in a wide variety of settings, from his breathtaking solo recitals and exploratory duos to his extraordinary trios and innovative chamber settings. With some three dozen albums to his credit as a leader or co-leader, Hersch consistently wins an international array of awards and lavish critical praise.

Dee Dee Bridgewater with the Memphis Soulphony

Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 8pm

Over the course of a career spanning four decades, threetime Grammy and Tony Award-winning jazz giant Dee Dee Bridgewater has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists, putting her unique spin on standards, as well as taking bold leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics. Ever the intrepid pioneer and keeper of tradition, Bridgewater has performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. In her stunning new album, Memphis...Yes, I’m Ready, she honors the city and her roots with such classics as B.B. King’s “The Thrill Is Gone,” Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness,” and “Why? (Am I Treated So Bad)” by The Staple Singers.

John Pizzarelli has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years, singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and playing sublime and inventive guitar. Using greats like Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra (for whom he opened in 1993) as touchstones, Pizzarelli brings a cool jazz flavor to the Great American Songbook. Pizzarelli has collaborated with an array of artists that include James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Rickie Lee Jones, Rosemary Clooney, and of course, his father, the legendary jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. With his charm, humor and rollicking swing jazz showmanship, Pizzarelli is setting the standard for stylish modern jazz.
