Certified Lunatic and Master of the Impossible Tomáš Kubínek is hailed by The New York Times as “absolutely expert and consistently charming!” His outrageous solo-performances have packed theaters, opera houses and international festivals of theater and humor in over 30 countries.
Tomáš Kubínek (toh-mawsh koo-bee-neck) was born in Prague and at the age of three was smuggled out of the country by his parents to escape the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. After two months in a refugee camp in Austria, the Kubínek family was granted asylum in Canada, and it was there, in St. Catharines, Ontario, that Tomáš witnessed his first circus. He became passionately interested in clowns, circus, theater and magic. At the age of nine, he presented his first performance before a circle of elderly magicians. By the age of 13, he had an agent and was performing comedy and sleight-of-hand in coffee houses in between folk music acts. While still in his teens, he made his circus debut with a Brazilian clown duo as the rear half of a two-person horse. There was no turning back.... Working any and all jobs related to showbiz, the enterprising young Kubínek was able to save money, travel to Europe and study with some of the world’s greatest teachers of theater, including Monika Pagneaux, Pierre Byland, Jacques Lecoq and Boleslav Polívka. These studies, combined with his own wild experiments in the art of live performance, gave birth to Mr. Kubínek’s unique style of work. Besides his solo work, Mr. Kubínek has enjoyed collaborating with other artists. He has been featured on Czech national television with the celebrated actor and playwright Boleslav Polívka on Mr. Polívka’s annual television specials; and with writer and comedian Frank van Keeken, he has perpetrated guerilla-style theater sketches upon an unsuspecting public.
Mr. Kubínek has also appeared on numerous occasions with Circus Flora, a One-Ring circus based in St. Louis, Missouri. As “guest villain,” he masterminded an elephant kidnapping, terrorized spectators and later plummeted 40 feet into the ring after fencing on the high-wire with Tino Wallenda of The Flying Wallendas. In 1991−92, with Britain’s The Right Size physical theater company, Mr. Kubínek created and performed Moose, a surreal comedy about three men braving the elements of the Arctic tundra.
In 1997 and 1999, Tomáš Kubínek played limited engagement runs at Broadway’s New Victory Theater. Both runs sold out in advance and received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. 6 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
In 2000, with director and writer Jim Jackson, Mr. Kubínek co-created and starred in Bed, a performance about the nightmarish adventures of an insomniac cabaret artist imprisoned in his hotel room.
In 2003, the play Bed was adapted to the screen. The film, Tucked into Bedlam, aired nationally in the U.S. and Canada on both Bravo! and CBC and was voted in Canada as one of the top cultural specials of the year.
While touring with his solo work, Mr. Kubínek teaches master classes for theater students and professionals and creates and directs new works, collaborating on pieces for solo artists and theater companies. In 2004, he devised Not Yet, At All, a one-woman show starring Edith Tankus. He later wrote and directed the play …all god’s children… for three Portuguese actors from the Teatrinho theater company. With playwright Paolo Nani, he co-created and starred in Denmark in Don’t Let Me Down, playing a wealthy businessman opposite Louise Hansen, a published Danish poet who has down syndrome and who played his angel. In the summer of 2009, Mr. Kubínek was artist-in-residence at The John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He created, directed and hosted The Big Sheboygan Shebang, a vaudevillian extravaganza involving over 200 local performers, two horses, and a boa constrictor. The performance celebrated the history, people and culture of Sheboygan and played to a packed audience in the historic Weill Center for the Performing Arts.
His most recent work, Professor Kubínek Meets the Symphony, features Mr. Kubínek as a special guest artist with symphony orchestras. The performance was commissioned by The University of Iowa’s Hancher Auditorium and had its premiere tour of five cities in Iowa and Nebraska with both Orchestra Iowa and the Omaha Symphony. Mr. Kubínek is the recipient of international awards, including The Moers Comedy Prize from The International Comedy Arts Festival in Germany; The Schneestern Award from the International Festival of Humor in Arosa, Switzerland; and the Samuel Beckett Theatre Award from the Dublin Theatre Festival in Ireland. CHRISTIAN McBRIDE Six-time Grammy-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride can be likened to a force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride’s path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded and most respected figures in the music world today. Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classical studies at The Juilliard School. There he was promptly recruited to the road by saxophonist Bobby Watson. Call it a change in curriculum: a decade’s worth of study through hundreds of recording sessions and countless gigs with an ever-expanding circle of musicians. He was finding his voice, and others were learning to listen for it.
In 2000, the lessons of the road came together in the formation of what would become his longest-running project, the Christian McBride Band. Praised by writer Alan Leeds as “one of the most intoxicating, least predictable bands on the scene today,” the CMB —saxophonist Ron Blake, keyboardist Geoffrey Keezer and drummer Terreon Gully—have been collectively evolving McBride’s all-inclusive, forwardthinking outlook on music through their incendiary live shows, as chronicled on 2006’s Live at Tonic. Part excursion, part education, the CMB is a vehicle built on a framework of experience and powered by unfettered creativity: a mesmerizing dance on the edge of an electro-acoustic fault line. In 2009, McBride began focusing this same energy through a more traditional lens with the debut of his criticallyacclaimed Inside Straight quintet, and again with the Christian McBride Big Band, whose 2012 release, The Good Feeling, won the Grammy for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Album. As his career entered its third decade, McBride added the role of mentor, tapping rising stars, pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. for the Christian McBride Trio’s Grammy-nominated album, Out Here.
He is also a respected educator and advocate, first noted in 1997 when he spoke at former President Bill Clinton’s town hall meeting, “Racism in the Performing Arts.” He has since been named artistic director of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions (2000), co-director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem (2005), and the second creative chair for jazz of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association (2005). In 1998, he combined roles, composing The Movement, Revisited, a four-movement suite dedicated to four of the major figures of the civil rights movement: Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The piece was commissioned by the Portland (ME) Arts Society and the National Endowment for the Arts, and performed throughout New England in the fall of 1998 8 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
with McBride’s quartet and a 30-piece gospel choir. For its tenth anniversary, The Movement, Revisited was expanded, rewritten and revamped to feature an 18-piece big band and four actors/speakers in addition to the gospel choir. It was performed in Los Angeles at Walt Disney Concert Hall, and praised by the Los Angeles Times as “a work that was admirable—to paraphrase Dr. King—for both the content of its music and the character of its message.”
Currently he hosts and produces The Lowdown: Conversations with Christian on SiriusXM satellite radio and National Public Radio’s Jazz Night in America, a weekly radio show and multimedia collaboration between WBGO, NPR and Jazz at Lincoln Center, showcasing outstanding live jazz from across the country. With his staggering body of work, McBride is the ideal host, drawing on history, experience and a gift for storytelling to bridge the gap between artist, music and audience. He brings that same breadth of experience to bear as artistic advisor for jazz programming at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC).
Completing the circle is his work with Jazz House Kids, the nationally recognized community arts organization founded by his wife, vocalist Melissa Walker. Exclusively dedicated to educating children through jazz, the “Jazz House” concept brings internationally renowned jazz performers to teach alongside a professional staff, offering students a wide range of creative programming that develops musical potential, enhances leadership skills and strengthens academic performance. This shared celebration of America’s original musical art form cultivates tomorrow’s community leaders and global citizens while preserving its rich legacy for future generations. BACKHAUSDANCE Backhausdance, formed in 2003 by Jennifer Backhaus, is known for its lush movement vocabulary and ensemble aesthetic. The company recently completed a milestone 15th anniversary season that included its first European tour and an engagement at New York’s internationally renowned Joyce Theater.
Featuring deeply human and emotional creations that are infused with a sense of humor and theatricality, Backhausdance is the recipient of 10 Lester Horton Awards from Dance Resource Center of Los Angeles for achievements in choreography, design and performance, helping propel them to the forefront of southern California contemporary dance. Grounded in an eclectic and dynamic vocabulary with a wonderful sense of fluidity and strength, the company’s repertory includes powerful, athletic dances; emotionally charged dramatic pieces; and whimsical, humorous glimpses of the human experience. Backhausdance also offers concert pieces with a focus on younger audiences that incorporate a master class workshop component. Orange County’s critically acclaimed contemporary dance company, Backhausdance has performed extensively nationwide as well as internationally in venues such as Teatro Verdi in Pisa, Italy; Teatr Collegium Nobilium in Warsaw, Poland; Schimmel Center at Pace University, New York; Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre, British Columbia; Pinedale Performing Arts Center, Wyoming; and Joyce SoHo, New York. Locally, the company has enjoyed performances at Irvine Barclay Theatre as part of the Barclay’s contemporary dance series. Backhausdance has been presented by the Carpenter Performing Arts Center and has appeared on the Studio Series at South Coast Repertory; Fall for Dance at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts; Laguna Dance Festival; Celebrate Dance at the Alex Theatre; and the Los Angeles Arts Holiday Celebration at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. As artist-in-residence, Backhausdance has worked with Brigham Young University, Chapman University, Moorpark College, Santa Ana College, and as guest artist for the California Dance Educators Association. As a member of the Arts Teach artist roster and part of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts Education and Community Programs, Backhausdance serves thousands of public and private school children throughout Orange and San Bernardino counties each year. The company is also partners with McCallum Theatre Education, which serves to advance the belief that all human beings are inherently creative. Since its launch in 1997, the program has served more than 620,000 students, educators and community members with performances and arts education experiences.
Backhausdance hosts an annual Summer Intensive at Chapman University, a life-changing experience for preprofessional and professional dancers. Backhausdance is dedicated to making this powerful program accessible to the dance community and provides scholarships for nearly half of the more than 170 participants.
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Jennifer Backhaus is founder and artistic
director of Backhausdance, Orange County’s award-winning contemporary dance company. She was featured in OC Metro’s “40 Under 40” and was recently honored by Chapman University with the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award as well as Alumni of the Year (2007) for her artistic leadership of Backhausdance. As a choreographer, Jennifer’s works have been commissioned and produced by Brigham Young University, Chapman University, Los Angeles Ballet, McCallum Theatre, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, TDC of the Bay Area and Utah Regional Ballet, among others. Many of Jennifer’s works have been honored with awards, and her piece Disintegration was presented at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. For Backhausdance, she has created numerous works, three of which have received multiple Lester Horton Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography. At the McCallum Theatre’s Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival, Jennifer has been the recipient of three consecutive choreography awards. Currently a full-time dance faculty member at Chapman University, Jennifer is also a teaching artist for the Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ Education Programs, where she shares her love of dance and choreography with hundreds of students in public and private schools across southern California. A life-long learner, Jenny holds a BFA in Communications and Dance from Chapman University, and received her MFA in Choreography from Hollins University.

Walter Matteini graduated from the
Accademia Nazionale di Danza in Rome, and went on to dance for some of the most renowned Italian and international companies, including the Balletto di Roma, Le Ballet National de Marseille Roland Petit, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the Opéra National de Lyon and the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza–Compagnia Aterballetto. Some of the top names in contemporary dance with whom he has worked include Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, Angelin Preljoçaj, Birgit Cullberg, Claude Brumachon, Maguy Marin, Bill T. Jones, Jacopo Godani and many others. Even as a dancer, Walter was strongly drawn to choreography, a passion and talent he developed in creations for young choreographers at Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the Opéra National de Lyon and Aterballetto. In 2009, with Ina Broeckx, he founded imPerfect Dancers Company, where he serves as artistic director and principal choreographer. Walter has created works of extraordinary skill, passion, depth and technique both for imPerfect Dancers Company as well as numerous other companies around the world.

Ina Broeckx, a native of Belgium, graduated from the Royal Ballet School, Antwerp (Belgium), and has danced with internationally renowned companies such as the Nederlands Dans Theater II, the Centre Chorégraphique National de Tours, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the Opéra National de Lyon and the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza — Compagnia Aterballetto. During her career, she has been fortunate to dance in works by world-famous choreographers, including Balanchine, Jiří Kylián, Hans Van Manen, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Angelin Preljoçaj, Nacho Duato, Ohad Naharin, Paul Lightfoot, Itzik Galili, Jacopo Godani, Maguy Marin, John Alleyne, Karole Armitage, Claude Brumachon and many others. Since 2000, Ina has worked at Walter Matteini’s side, designing costumes and sets and being actively involved in the conceptualization of all productions. In 2009, they founded imPerfect Dancers Company, where she is artistic director, co-choreographer and dancer.
Dwight Rhoden, founding artistic director and resident choreographer of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, has established a remarkably wide-ranging career, earning distinction from The New York Times as “one of the most sought out choreographers of the day.” A native of Dayton, Ohio, he has performed with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, and as a principal dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Since 1994, Dwight has created 80+ ballets for Complexions, as well as numerous other companies, including New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, San Francisco Ballet, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, BalletMet, Colorado Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, The Joffrey Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov), Miami City Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Philadanco, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Oakland Ballet, The Washington Ballet, Ballet Nice Mediterranean, Rome Opera Ballet and Tulsa Ballet, among many others. He has directed and choreographed for television, film and theater, including So You Think You Can Dance; Cirque du Soleil; world tours for Prince, Lenny Kravitz and Kelly Clarkson; and the feature film One Last Dance. Dwight was nominated for a Benois de la Danse Award for his piece, The Great Gatsby, for the Mariinsky Ballet. He’s been artist-in-residence at USC Kaufman, Boston Conservatory, The Juilliard School, New York University, and Southern Methodist University. Honors include a New York Foundation for the Arts award, induction into the NYFA Hall of Fame, the Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography, an honorary doctorate from Boston Conservatory, and The Ailey School Apex Award in recognition of his extensive contributions to the field of dance.

COMPANY DANCERS Ellen Akashi, a native of southern California, began studying dance at Southland Ballet Academy under the direction of Salwa Rizkalla. She has attended numerous dance programs, including those of Axis Connect, BODYTRAFFIC, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, LINES and Springboard Danse Montréal. In 2013, Ellen received a BFA in Dance Performance from Chapman University, where she performed an excerpt of Jiří Kylián’s Falling Angels and a Merce Cunningham MinEvent. She furthered her modern dance training at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance’s year-round program with director Summer Lee Rhatigan and artists Christian Burns, Tristan Ching, Alex Ketley and Doug Letheren. Since returning to southern California, Ellen has performed with the San Diego Opera in Nixon in China; Skylar Spence’s music video I Can’t Be Your Superman; and two seasons with LA-based Clairobscur Dance Company, founded by artistic director and resident choreographer Laurie Sefton. This is Ellen’s second season with Backhausdance. Tawny Chapman, originally from southern California, has worked for more than 18 years as an accomplished performer, innovative choreographer and influential educator. Currently performing in her 14th season as a veteran dancer with Orange County’s critically acclaimed Backhausdance, Tawny is a graduate of Chapman University with a BFA in Dance Performance and an alumna of the Orange County School of the Arts’ Commercial Dance Conservatory. She has performed the choreographic work of Jennifer Backhaus, Dee Caspary, Jodie Gates, Sean Greene, Liz Imperio, Ido Tadmor and Yin Yue, among others. Tawny is currently on the faculty at Impact Dance Center (Los Alamitos) and the Orange County School of the Arts’ Commercial Dance Conservatory, where she also serves as a program facilitator. In addition to performing and teaching, Tawny’s awardwinning choreographic works have been performed at Pasadena Dance Festival, Backhausdance’s Platform, Encore Dance Festival, Studio A Dance’s DanceSpot, Hart Pulse Dance’s MixMatch Dance Festival, The Core Collective, and beyond. Samuel DeAngelo, from Yorba Linda,
California, began dancing at the age of 18 at Santiago Canyon College. After discovering his deep passion for dance, he trained at Santa Ana College, subsequently transferring to Chapman University. In 2016, he graduated from Chapman University with a BFA in Dance Performance, garnering multiple awards for both performance and choreography. After graduation, he has worked with companies including Anaheim Ballet; Pony Box Dance Theater; and Shieldwall Dance Company. Samuel was part of the opening cast of Beauty and The Beast at Disney Cruise Line. Most recently, Samuel joined FUSE Dance Company under the direction of

Joshua Estrada-Romero. He has worked with choreographers including Jennifer Backhaus, Ido Tadmor, Yin Yue, Amanda Kay White, Sean Greene, Andrea Guise, Leann Alduenda and Connor Gallagher. Additionally, he has participated in notable intensives and workshops, including Backhausdance’s Summer Intensive; BODYTRAFFIC; Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company (LACDC); and Jacob Jonas The Company (JJTC). Samuel joined Backhausdance as an apprentice and became a full company member in 2017. This is Samuel’s third season with Backhausdance.
Amie Lee Kilgore, originally from Tucson,
Arizona, began her dance training at the age of 11 under the tutelage of Mary-Beth Cabana with Ballet Tucson. In 2014, Amie graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona and was recognized as Outstanding Senior at the College of Fine Arts and Dance. While working toward her BFA in Dance, she was privileged to perform various featured roles choreographed by UA dance faculty, as well as worldrenowned works such as Rubies, Allegro Brilliante and Tarantella by the legendary George Balanchine. Prior to graduation, Amie furthered her contemporary dance training and became a founding member of ConDanza, under the direction of Cesar Degollado Rubio. Currently, she is in her fifth year as a part-time performing faculty member with San Pedro City Ballet under the direction of Cindy and Patrick Bradley. This is Amie’s fourth season with Backhausdance.
Katie Natwick began dancing at the age of 11 in her hometown of Escondido, California. Having discovered a deep passion for movement, she furthered her training at Chapman University, where she received a BFA in Dance Performance. Throughout her career, Katie has had the opportunity to perform with companies such as DANCE AEGIS, Kairos Dance Company and Nickerson-Rossi Dance, as well as
choreographers including Robin Conrad, Sean Greene, Jess Harper and Dale Merrill. A multi-faceted artist, she also teaches various dance styles at Hills Academy of Music, Art and Dance in Torrance, California. This is Katie’s second season as a company member of Backhausdance.
Kaitlin Regan is currently performing in her 8th season with Backhausdance, where she also serves as educational outreach director. She is an alumna of Chapman University with a BFA in Dance Performance. Kaitlin has performed the works of Jennifer Backhaus, Dale Merrill, Sean Greene, Mike Esperanza, Yin Yue, Ido Tadmor and others. As an influential dance educator in southern California for the past 13 years, Kaitlin has helped develop an adaptive dance program for students with special needs. She is also on the faculty at Avanti Dance Company (Costa Mesa, CA) and Impact Dance Center (Cypress, CA). She was chosen to be a dance teaching artist for ESCAPE, a research grant designed to examine the impact of learning science concepts through dance and visual arts, in addition to classroom studies for ESL students. Kaitlin has also developed STEAM assemblies and residencies for the company, coinciding with the Next Generation Science Standards. Chihiro Sano, originally from Japan, began
her modern dance training at the age of seven under the direction of Akiko Ishii. She joined Backhausdance as an apprentice and has been a full company member since 2010. Chihiro has worked as an assistant to Artistic Director Jennifer Backhaus on freelance projects such as the Irvine Valley College Faculty Dance Concert, the East Valley Dance Project/Studio Project in Palm Desert, the Temecula Community Theater Dance Project and Trolley Dances Riverside. A certified yoga instructor, Chihiro is passionate about sharing her love of dance and yoga with people of all ages.

Megan Seagren, originally from Aurora,
Colorado, fell in love with dance at age three. In 2016, she graduated magna cum laude from Chapman University with a BFA in Dance Performance. During her collegiate years, Megan had the privilege of performing at the prestigious Joyce Theater in New York City with the Chapman Dance Ensemble under the direction of Jennifer Backhaus and Dale Merrill. She has attended intensive studies with AXIS Connect; Backhausdance; BODYTRAFFIC; Colorado Ballet; and the American Dance Festival (ADF), where she performed works by Batsheva, Lar Lubovitch and William Forsythe. Megan has performed as a guest artist with Backhausdance, Emergent Dance Company, Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company, Shieldwall Dance Company and VVW Dance. This is her second season as a company member of Backhausdance.
Amanda Kay White is a founding/ current member and rehearsal director of Backhausdance. She is an alumna of Chapman University, earning a BFA in Dance Performance and a BA in Communication Arts with an emphasis in advertising. Amanda graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Choreography degree from Jacksonville University in 2016. As an extension of her thesis work, she traveled to Finland to partake in the inaugural DanceHack event, where differing avenues of technology converged with the moving human form. Additionally, her written thesis was accepted into the prestigious International Academic Forum in Barcelona, Spain. Her inventive choreographic works have been showcased at Highways Performance Space, Pasadena
Dance Festival, American Celebration, The Core Collective, Epilepsy Network Benefit Concert, Chapman Touring Company, American College Dance Festival and MixMatch Dance Festival. Amanda is currently on the faculty at Chapman University and Santa Ana College, as well as Orange County School of the Arts and South Coast Conservatory. Along with teaching at SCC, she is the executive advisor to their national award-winning dance team and managing director of the jazz department. In 2009, she founded Compass Dance Company, a pre-professional contemporary dance company for emerging artists ages 14 and up. By engaging, expressing and innovating, Compass Dance Company reaches out to the community through dance.

On days of a performance, the Box Office generally remains open through the first half of a performance. MasterCard, VISA, American Express, and Discover accepted. Late Seating To prevent disruption of a performance in progress, patrons who have not entered the theatre when the performance begins may be asked to wait in the lobby until there is a suitable interval. Ushers Ushers are located at each auditorium entrance and at designated stations in the lobby. Please consult an usher if you need assistance. Public Parking Parking is managed by UC Irvine and is available for a fee. The parking structure is located at the corner of West Peltason and Campus Dive.
Restrooms Restrooms are located on the main lobby level near the box office. For your convenience, diaper changing stations are located in both the men’s and women’s restrooms. Drinking fountains are located on either side of the main lobby staircase and on the second level. Listening Devices Listening devices for amplifying stage sound are available at the concessions bar free of charge.

Children Children are welcome. However, not all events are appropriate for small children. A paid ticket is required for everyone entering the theatre, including infants and children. The box office can provide advice regarding an event’s suitability.
