BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY The year 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s remarkable arrival onto the music scene. Since its formation in the early nineties in Ventura, California, the band has toured virtually nonstop, performing on average over 150 shows a year, and has produced a sizable catalog of recorded music, with sales of over 2 million albums to date. Early on, during their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in Los Angeles, they reminded the world, in the midst of the grunge era no less, that it was still cool to swing. The band, co-founded by singer Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren, was at the forefront of the swing revival of that time, blending a vibrant fusion of the classic American sounds of jazz, swing and Dixieland, with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s all original core line-up includes Scotty Morris (lead vocals and guitar), Kurt Sodergren (drums), Dirk Shumaker (double bass and vocals), Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone and vocals), Glen “The Kid” Marhevka (trumpet), Karl Hunter (saxophones and clarinet) and Joshua Levy (piano and arranger).

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s efforts to promote and revitalize swing music have taken shape as much more than a simple tribute. Taking inspiration from the creators of this uniquely American art form, the band’s original horn-infused music and legendary high energy shows introduce the genre to a new and younger generation, while remaining cognizant and respectful of the music’s rich legacy.

6 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s first phase of stardom featured an appearance in the 1996 indie film Swingers, a movie that not only launched the careers of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau but introduced Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to an audience beyond their Los Angeles base. The band’s music has appeared in countless films and television shows, including The Wild, Despicable Me, Phineas and Ferb, Friends, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Ally McBeal and So You Think You Can Dance. They have appeared live on Dancing with the Stars, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, NBC’s Christmas in Rockefeller Center, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a remarkable seven appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the Super Bowl XXXIII Halftime Show. The band has also appeared as special guests with many of the country’s most distinguished symphony orchestras and has performed for three U.S. presidents. After 25 years, 11 records, over 2800 live shows, and countless appearances in film and television, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is showing no signs of slowing down. JESSICA LANG DANCE Since the company’s inception in 2011, Jessica Lang Dance (JLD) has been devoted to enriching and inspiring global audiences by immersing them in the beauty of movement and music. JLD’s diverse repertoire of original works, created by Bessie Award-winning Artistic Director Jessica Lang, embodies a genre-bending contemporary movement style that resists categorical definition. Hailed as “a master of visual composition” by Dance Magazine, Lang seamlessly incorporates striking design elements and transforms classical ballet language into artfully crafted, emotionally engaging works that feature gifted, graceful and athletic performers. “Jessica Lang Dance is to movement what music is to sound.” (Mesa Performing Arts Examiner)

The company has performed their repertoire of 25 unique works for audiences nationally and internationally in over 200 cities, 38 states, and 7 different countries. JLD’s trajectory is strongly influenced by a commitment to artistic collaboration with such renowned artists as architect Steven Holl, costume designer Bradon McDonald, lighting designer Nicole Pearce, and composer Jakub Ciupinski, as well as visual artist Shinichi Maruyama, among others.

In 2017, Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival presented JLD in Lang’s rendition of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater—hailed as “one of the most extraordinary experiences an opera-goer is likely to see … .” Her choreographic genius spans the breadth between these classical works and the legendary music of singer Tony Bennett, with the recent 2018 premiere of This Thing Called Love, commissioned by the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College. JLD’s 2018–19 season began with two exceptional residencies to develop new work at White Oak and the coveted Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. JLD has been presented at premier venues and festivals worldwide, including Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, BAM’s Next Wave Festival, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, the Joyce Theater, the White Light Festival at Lincoln Center, Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center, Bolshoi’s Inversion Festival of Contemporary Dance, and Palacio de Bellas Artes, among many others.

Jessica Lang (Artistic Director) leads the creative vision of the organization which has garnered remarkable acclaim since the company’s founding in 2011. Under her artistic leadership, the company now offers more than 50 performances annually at some of the world’s most prestigious performing arts centers. Noted for her dedication to educational activities, Lang developed a unique curriculum for JLD called LANGuage, which is offered as part of the company’s programming on tour and locally in New York City, focusing on the Queens community.

Alex Thomas Sponsored by:

IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE | 15

JON LOVITZ Jon Lovitz, one of the best-known comedians of the past 30 years, started acting in high school plays. He further developed his skills at the University of California, Irvine, where he earned a B.A. in Drama. At the Film Actors Workshop, he studied acting with Tony Barr, who advised Jon to concentrate solely on comedy.

In 1982, Jon began taking classes with the celebrated improvisational comedy troupe, The Groundlings. One year later, after being accepted into The Groundlings’ Sunday Company, Jon landed his first acting job on a television show, The Paper Chase (Season 2). Thinking he was on his way, he promptly quit his job at a clothing store…and became a messenger. The next three years—nothing!!! Then, in September of 1984, he was accepted into the main company of The Groundlings. On March 28, 1985, The Groundlings appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, where Jon debuted one of his most famous personas, Tommy Flanagan of Pathological Liars Anonymous. Within six months of that premiere, Jon secured an agent, booked a movie, a series, voice over work for a cartoon, and Saturday Night Live. Since then, Jon has been working non-stop. He was nominated for an Emmy for his first two years on Saturday Night Live, where he became known for his characters Tommy Flanagan of the Pathological Liars Anonymous (“Yeah, that’s the ticket!”), Master Thespian, Hanukkah Harry, and The Devil. His numerous films include: Big, A League of Their Own, The Wedding Singer, High School High, Small Time Crooks, Rat Race, The Producers, Eight Crazy Nights, The Benchwarmers, Grown Ups 2, The Ridiculous 6, Bark Ranger and Killing Hasselhoff, among many others. He has worked with acclaimed directors such as Penny Marshall, Rob Reiner, Jerry Zucker and Woody Allen.

Jon appeared on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre in Neil Simon’s play, The Dinner Party, taking over the lead role from Henry Winkler. He also sang (yes, he can sing!) at Carnegie Hall three times, including PBS’s Great Performances: Ira Gershwin at 100: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall. He sang the National Anthem at the Dodger Stadium and the U.S. Open; and performed a duet with the English rock star Robbie Williams at the Royal Alpert Hall. (He appears on Williams’ album, Swing While You’re Winning!)

Jon’s illustrious television career includes recurring roles on Hot in Cleveland, Las Vegas, Two and a Half Men, Hawaii Five-O and New Girl. He was the first famous guest star on Friends (that same week, appearing on an episode of Seinfeld). Well known for his distinctive voice, he played the character Jay Sherman in the acclaimed cult cartoon series, The Critic. He has also appeared in twelve episodes of The Simpsons, creating the character of Marge Simpson’s boyfriend, Artie Ziff (who sounds suspiciously like Jay Sherman). 16 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

For the past fifteen years, Jon has pursued a career as a stand-up comedian. He is one of the few performers who started as an actor and then became a stand-up comedian. Jon successfully headlines nightclubs, theaters and casinos across the country. ALEX THOMAS Alex Thomas Jr. is an American actor and stand-up comedian who was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. Thomas first broke into the entertainment business as a teenage dancer on the long-running television show, Soul Train. While working as an assistant choreographer to Rosie Perez on In Living Color, he met the show’s producers, Keenan Ivory Wayans and his brother, Damon Wayans, who talked Thomas into doing stand-up comedy—and the rest is history.

Thomas has appeared on BET’s ComicView, Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam; Comedy Central’s Premium Blend; An Evening at the Improv; The Arsenio Hall Show; and The Jay Leno Show. He was the star of his own one-hour comedy special on Showtime entitled Straight Clownin’. His film credits include: Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, B.A.P.S, The Players Club, Two Can Play That Game, The Wash, Just Married, Woman Thou Art Loosed, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, among others. Thomas has made guest appearances on Moesha, Martin, The Parkers, All of Us, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper and was a series regular on The Jamie Foxx Show. He played a recurring character on the hit show, Family Guy, as well as on other popular animated series, including Batman and Beyond, King of the Hill and The Cleveland Show. Thomas is currently one of the stars of Mr. Box Office on The CW. Artist Representation: Richard Farrell ICM Partners 310-550-4000 rfarrell@icmpartners.com

AIDA CUEVAS Aida Cuevas has created one of the most important careers in traditional Mexican music. With a 42-year career and 39 album releases to her credit, Cuevas, dubbed the “Queen of Mariachi,” is an esteemed figure in Mexico, beloved for her unswerving devotion to traditional mariachi music and for her mastery of its demanding vocal forms. Cuevas celebrates a long-lasting career with a Grammy award, a Latin Grammy award and seven Latin Grammy nominations in the Best Mariachi/Ranchero Album category.

Cuevas became the first female singer in the mariachi genre to win a Grammy when she was honored at the 2018 awards for Best Regional Mexican Music Album for her CD Arrieros Somos (Versiones Acústicas). The album is a collection of acoustic versions of Mexican classics by renowned composer Cuco Sánchez. She previously won a Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album for her 2010 release De corazón a corazón… Mariachi Tango. Cuevas’ latest reléase, Totalmente Juan Gabriel Vol. II, is the second of five CD installments in which she pays tribute to the legendary singer and songwriter. Gabriel produced two albums for Cuevas, 1983’s Aida Cuevas Canta a Juan Gabriel and 1985’s Exitos. The first volume of Totalmente Juan Gabriel was released in 2013. Cuevas celebrates the life and career of her dearest friend and greatest mentor with a special U.S. tribute tour. She is the only artist authorized by the Juan Gabriel estate to record and tour his music.

18 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Cuevas is a master of the mariachi art song, performing a full range of mariachi numbers, including the falsetto heavyweight “El Pastor,” the iconic Juan Gabriel hits “Te Doy Las Gracias,” “Te Vas a Quedar Con Las Ganas” and “Quizás Mañana,” as well as new songs from Totalmente Juan Gabriel Vol. II, including “Gracias por Todo,” “Cada Vez, Cada Vez,” and “Buscando el Séptimo Amor.” Cuevas also performs many ranchero classics such as “Traición a Juan,” and the José Alfredo Jiménez compositions “Me Equivoque Contigo” and “No Me Amenaces.” Her unique voice and style have allowed her to cultivate a successful career spanning decades, leaving a remarkable imprint in the history of Mexican music. ABOUT AMATØR Amatør was born from personal discovery—from the love that I have acquired over the years for art in all its variations, and for flamenco and all of its possibilities.

In many ways, it is a gift to myself; because many things that I am passionate about come together in Amatør. My love for the theater and the Tablao.

My love for improvisation and choreography.

My love for the precious moments of inspiration.

My love for Spanish dance forms, the flamenco and the avant-garde. My love for sharing this experience with other artists.

I wanted to break that fourth wall that separates the artist from the audience; I wanted to interact with the audience and incorporate them into the show, to give them an opportunity to make decisions about what may happen on the stage, and to experience a different and unique show every night.

Amatør is divided into three acts: the first, “Reflejo” (Reflection), represents the artist’s vanity; the second, “Térreo” (Ground), is the deep connection to one’s roots; and the third, “Lozano” (Lush/Exuberant), is the absolute freedom.

Amatør includes two pieces choreographed by two great artists and partners: Marco Flores and Nino de los Reyes. The artistic direction is by Rafaela Carrasco and Jesús Carmona. 20 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Amatør is, above all, an amalgam; it’s where dreams come true.

JESÚS CARMONA Jesús Carmona was born in Barcelona in 1985 and began his dance training at the age of seven. In 2004, he graduated from the Institute of Theatre and Dance in Barcelona with a degree in Spanish dance and flamenco.

Carmona made his professional debut at the Zorrilla Theater in Barcelona at the age of 16. Over the years, he has performed with a variety of notable companies, including the Spanish National Ballet (as principal dancer), Nuevo Ballet Español, Carmen Cortés, El Güito, and Antonio Canales, among others. Carmona’s desire to showcase his more personal side led him to leave the National Ballet of Spain and embark on a new adventure in Cuna Negra y Blanca (Black and White Crib). Presented at the Bienal de Sevilla and Madrid en Danza in 2012, and Festival de Jerez 2013, the work met with critical and popular acclaim. In 2014, he presented 7 Balcones, the second production with his own company. In the same year, he participated in a tribute to Carmen Amaya, “La Capitana,” at the National Theater of Catalonia together with Rocío Molina, Mayte Martín and Ramón Oller. Carmona was principal dancer alongside Antonio Canales, Karime Amaya and Carlos Rodríguez at the Flamenco Festival: Gala Flamenca, garnering great reviews from the audience and the press. (Miami’s El Nuevo Herald proclaimed: “2014 will be in our memories as the year that Jesús Carmona visited Miami.”)

In 2015, Compañía Jesús Carmona premiered its third production, Ímpetus (Bursting with Energy) and performed an excerpt at the 2015 Fall for Dance Festival at New York City Center. Carmona performed in Miami and Los Angeles in 2017; and in January 2018, he created Camino at the famous Corral de la Morería, the “Cathedral of Flamenco,” in Madrid. Jesús Carmona is a recipient of numerous awards, including: the prestigious Premio Desplante at the 52nd Cante de las Minas Festival in La Unión in 2012; Best Outstanding Dancer at the XX Certamen de Danza Española and Flamenco de Madrid in 2011; and 3rd Prize for Choreography at the Festival Nou Barris in 2001.

Throughout 2018, Carmona toured the U.S., the Emirates and China. Amatør premiered on April 6, 2018 at the Juan Bravo Theater in Segovia. Jesús Carmona U.S. tour is produced by Flamenco Festival and Flamenco Festival Worldwide AIE. Director Miguel Marín
