In the summer of 2017, Krysta Rodriguez performed a concert for OCSA’s Season Premiere event at the majestic Balboa Bay Club, directed and staged by her (much) old (-er) friend Scott Barnhardt. Unable to resist the urge, as they were preparing that concert, Krysta and Scott sang two duets together — just for the fun of it…cracking jokes, telling stories and singing harmonies under the stars. And something clicked.

When approached by Jerry Mandel to come together for an entire evening of song, here at Irvine Barclay Theatre, they jumped at the opportunity. It is not very often you are given the chance of performing with one of your best friends in a gorgeous venue in your hometown. Carpe Diem!

This is a labor of love for both Krysta and Scott, and one that could not have happened without the gracious support of Jerry and Whitney Mandel, Ginny Hayward and the stupendous staff of the Broadway Cabaret at the Barclay series, Ralph Opacic, our Music Director Christopher W. Smith, music/transcription support from Ben Rauhala, Mina Bloom, Eric Kalver and Jared Sheahan, production support from OCSA staff members Karen Rymar and Amelia Barron, endless emotional support from our significant others, Peter Westervelt and JP Karliak, and, of course, our families and friends. We are so appreciative of our formative years spent in the vibrant artistic community in the Orange County area, and it means the world to be able to be “Coming Home” for this opportunity and experience. Enjoy!

ABOUT THE 7 FINGERS

ABOUT RÉVERSIBLE

The 7 Fingers is an arts collective unlike any other. In 2002, the 7 founders set out to redefine circus by stripping down the spectacle to its thrilling essence.

Imagine your grandparents and what they lived through when they were your age. Eight outstanding performers dug through the histories of their families. They unveiled stories from the past and skeletons in the closets that reflected, in some way or another, how they experience life today.

The contemporary company tells stories using deathdefying acrobatics with a life-affirming theatricality that is unique to The 7 Fingers. Since its inception, the company has expanded from its own signature touring shows to creating theatrical experiences as diverse as the very artistic directors themselves: original productions varying from intimate one-man shows to large-scale arena performances, Broadway musicals, artistic collaborations with renowned international artists and companies, production design and direction, special events, Olympic ceremonies, televised performances, fashion, art and music events, immersive experiences and much more. Every one of these projects carries The 7 Fingers’ unequivocal mark. The company has consistently spread its horizons by mixing genres and exploring new ways to tell stories. Fascinated by the human condition, The 7 Fingers create performances that celebrate our world, our time and our humanity. Their shows tour the globe and bring audiences to their feet wherever they go.

In 2018, The 7 Fingers opened their very own Centre of Creation and Production. Situated in the heart of Montréal’s downtown theater district, the new centre houses all of the company’s activities, departments and dreams under one roof.

10 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Through a unique, riveting mix of theater, circus, dance, music and acrobatics, Réversible is dedicated to a generation who forged the world that we live in today and whose stories might hold the key to a better tomorrow. Our elders lived in a simpler era, when time moved at a less rapid pace. This time in history inspired poetry, imagination, passion, and staggering virtuosity. Are these stories written in our DNA? How will the past guide our evolution in the future?

With The 7 Fingers’ Réversible, be prepared for the best in contemporary circus: moments of pure grace yielding to rushes of adrenalin, as a cast of multi-talented performers travel through time and space. Be part of a vibrant journey that will give you goose bumps: peek through the key hole at a reversible world, where everyday life is turned upside down into new, spectacular universes filled with beauty, emotion and — yes — hope.

Gypsy Snider (Director). Co-founder and acting co-artistic

director of The 7 Fingers, Gypsy Snider wrote, directed and/ or co-directed The 7 Fingers signature shows Réversible, Intersection, Amuse, Loft and Traces. In 2013, under the direction of Diane Paulus, Gypsy integrated and choreographed circus into the Tony Awardwinning revival of the musical Pippin. Gypsy’s work on Pippin earned her a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award.

Other honors include numerous awards for Traces (Outer Critics Circle Award, Best Special Event Award from Off Broadway Alliance, named one of the Top 10 Plays and Musicals of 2011 by Time magazine). Traces ran for a year off-Broadway at New York’s Union Square Theatre. In 2015, Gypsy received the Evolving Circus Award in New York. Gypsy has choreographed televised feature performances for America’s Got Talent, Her Majesty’s Royal Variety Performance, The Illusionist: Darcy Oake’s Edge of Reality on ITV and the Underwear and Denim Fashion Show for Bench Philippines. She is also a guest teacher and guest director at the National Circus School of Montréal. Originally from San Francisco, Gypsy grew up performing as the daughter of the founders of The Pickle Family Circus. After receiving her degree in physical theater from the Accademia Teatro Dimitri in Switzerland in 1993, she performed internationally for 18 years, with Cirque du Soleil and many other circus and theater companies.

AN INTERVIEW WITH DIRECTOR GYPSY SNIDER What is the theme of Réversible?

The idea was that we were going to base the characters in our story on characters that were very deeply inherent in ourselves. So, I sent the cast out in November 2015 to start looking into their genealogy. They had to go at least to their grandparents, but some of them went as far as their greatgrandparents and their great-great-grandparents. I wanted them to create characters based on where they came from, a past that they were not even aware of. The idea was that in studying that past, they might see a deeper, stronger path to how they became the people that they are. And the idea was that we would then construct characters to tell the story of Réversible based on events that occurred in these artists’ DNA pool over the last 150 years. This has proven to be the deepest and most exciting part of creating Réversible. Every day they’d come back with new stories about their grandparents or their great-grandparents, things they had no idea about. One girl found out she was Jewish, she had no idea. One girl who is Swiss found out that her Japanese grandmother had abandoned an arranged marriage in Japan and ran away with a Swiss man. She became the first woman to immigrate to this tiny Swiss village. The stories are just incredible. What we’re feeling in this current generation is that we are uprooted. We are not as connected to family and past as we were even 50 years ago. What is the creative process of Réversible?

The process for Réversible is based on the creative process The 7 Fingers have been developing over the past 15 years. We begin with a spark, an idea, a desire to express and

explore a concept that fascinates us, something that we feel will fulfill our search for a better humanity, for a better understanding of who we are. We write the concept — the story writing happens in our minds, at the writing table between The 7 Fingers — and we develop the idea together, we take a storyline, a vehicle to explore the capacity of storytelling through circus, and then we cast a show of characters based on that desire and through improvisation. We create a playground in which we ask the artists to improvise on themes, structures, situations, so that they are able to bring in their own quality — their own flavor — and together we create the show. The artists enter the process almost a year before the premiere. Their contribution is fundamental; creating this way is heavily based on improvisation, on a very personal way of working. I propose concepts, music, stage designs, situations, a theatrical framework onto which the artists must improvise to fill this canvas.

Of course, there are choreographed segments and images that are already very clear to me before, but I always expect the artists to go further. It’s a very organic, very creative, and always surprising process, one that allows us to create one entity that is separate from us, an entity that takes us further than something that any of us might have imagined alone. xciting changes are underway at the Barclay this season! We’re significantly expanding our ArtsReach programming, bringing more artists to local students and community members for a variety of learning opportunities. In December, the Barclay partnered with board member Liza Krassner to host a very special outreach event at the theatre. Under her leadership, we collaborated with the Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC) to bring children with developmental disabilities and their families to the theatre to watch a private sound check and dress rehearsal with jazz trumpeter Dr. Bobby Rodriguez and his band. Participating families had the exclusive opportunity to meet one-on-one with Dr. Rodriguez in a supportive environment before his Latin Jazz Christmas show at the Barclay that evening.

The event was a success! Families in attendance were touched by Dr. Rodriguez’s genuine warmth and his sensitivity to the unique needs of his audience:

“Thank you for all your efforts arranging the incredible opportunity for the Regional Center clients attending the rehearsal and meeting Dr. Bobby Rodriguez. Our son Santos was so thrilled and it was a blessing to be able to experience it with him. Music heals Santos and it was obvious again last night.” - Lisa Cline (RCOC parent) RCOC is an extraordinary organization dedicated to supporting this underserved population in Orange County. The Barclay is honored to have played a part in RCOC’s worthy mission. Through meaningful experiences like this, we strive to create more openminded communities, a kinder, more

productive world, and a brighter future for everyone. Thank you, Liza and RCOC! With your help, we are keeping the momentum going so the arts can reach even more people in our community. At the Barclay, our mission is to serve you and yours—to provide joy, inspiration, education, and a cherished place to celebrate life through the arts. With your help, we can continue to uplift our community through the arts! If you’d like to support more outreach events like this at the Barclay, please consider making a contribution to ArtsReach today.

KALANI PE'A In 2017, Kalani Pe'a’s debut album, E Walea (“relaxing at ease with the gentle voices of the birds”), took home the Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album. It reached No. 1 on the iTunes world music charts and No. 12 on the Billboard world albums charts. In Hawai‘i, Kalani Pe'a was awarded the 2017 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award (Hawai‘i’s Grammy) for Best Hawaiian Contemporary Album, making history “as the first Hawai‘i recording artist EVER to have received a Grammy Award and a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for the same project. No one has accomplished that before.” (Honolulu Star-Advertiser) Accolades continued with his August 2018 sophomore release, No ‘Ane‘i, which reached No.1 on iTunes world music charts and No. 11 on Billboard’s world music charts. No ‘Ane’i (“We Belong Here”), is nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award in the Best Regional Roots Music Album category. Self-described as “Hawaiian contemporary soul,” Kalani Pe'a was awarded a prestigious fellowship from the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation in 2018. With his passion for perpetuating the Hawaiian language, his albums feature his original Hawaiian songs alongside his affectionate arrangements and Hawaiian interpretations of some of his R&B favorites—a nod to the Western music he grew up listening.

Kalani Pe'a sings everything from classical, musicals, ballads, R&B, soul and, of course, Hawaiian music, displaying his wide-ranging talent as a songwriter and music composer. It started at age four when Pe'a was diagnosed with a speech impediment; his mother Pua Leonard introduced her son to singing and music in order to help him pronounce his words. Leonard and Pe'a’s father, Arthur (Ata) Pe'a, who comes from a musical family, encouraged Kalani to take vocal lessons and choir. By the time he was eight years old, Pe'a was winning numerous talent competitions statewide. At age 18, he won Hawai‘i’s Brown Bags to Stardom music talent competition. While a student at Colorado Mesa University (formerly known as Mesa State College), from where he received his degree in mass communications, he garnered first place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition of the Colorado/Wyoming chapter, in men’s classical and musical division. “From speech therapy to being a college graduate in communications,” noted Pe'a’s father with humor, “Kalani can’t stop talking and singing.” In the process of planning his debut album, Pe'a contacted Dave Tucciarone, a 13-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awardwinning engineer and producer based in Honolulu. “I had to travel every weekend from Maui to meet Dave for seven months, collaborate with my musicians, and just sing my heart out,” Pe'a noted. The hard work paid off with the 2017 Grammy win, followed by his first Nā Hōkū Hanohano award. 18 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

A fluent Hawaiian speaker and graduate of the Hawaiian language school, Ke Kula ‘o Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu, Pe'a went on to illustrate and publish five Hawaiian language children’s stories. He taught at Kamehameha Preschools in Kona, and worked for eight years as a Hawaiian resource coordinator for Kamehameha Schools on Maui, creating curriculum and teaching Hawaiian culture with a science focus.

He now has the opportunity to focus on his music full-time. He was honored by the Hawai‘i State House of Representatives with an official proclamation in 2017: “It is vital that Native Hawaiian culture and the arts be perpetuated for future generations: Kalani Pe'a is a torchbearer, and we recognize his accolades, accomplishments and continued work on behalf of Native Hawaiians.” www.kalanipeamusic.com.

Aiau Koa (Guitar) is known for his performances with many of Hawai‘i’s leading artists, including Keali‘i Reichel and Kalani Pe'a. He is also an instructor and practitioner of the martial arts style of Ai Pilau Kenpo, drawn to its heart and soul exemplifying the spirit of ohana or family.

STEEP CANYON RANGERS With Out in the Open, Steep Canyon Rangers affirm their place as one of the most versatile and idiosyncratic bands in all of contemporary American music. The Grammy Award-winning, North Carolina-based sextet has spent nearly two decades bending and shaping the bluegrass aesthetic, wedding it to elements of pop, country, folk rock, and more to create something original and all their own. Out in the Open is perhaps Steep Canyon Rangers’ bravest excursion thus far, transcending bluegrass while in many ways getting closest to the genre’s true form thanks to producer Joe Henry’s very traditional approach towards recording.

Steep Canyon Rangers have been expanding the parameters of bluegrass since coming together in 2000. Since then, the genre-defying band has developed a remarkable catalogue of original music —predominantly co-written by Graham Sharp and bassist Charles R. Humphrey III —that links them to the past while at the same time, demonstrates their ambitious intent to bring string-based music into contemporary relevance. IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE | 19

With that goal in mind, Steep Canyon Rangers have in recent years begun collaborating with some of Americana’s most distinctive producers, working with top studio hands like Larry Campbell (2013’s Tell the Ones I Love) and Jerry Douglas (2015’s Radio) to take newfangled routes in crafting their ever-evolving approach. Out in the Open sees the band teaming up with Joe Henry, an accomplished singersongwriter as well as a three-time Grammy Award-winning producer (Solomon Burke, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Carolina Chocolate Drops) with a particular affinity for American roots music. In July 2017, Steep Canyon Rangers arrived at Fidelitorium Recordings in Kernersville, North Carolina, an intimate studio facility built, owned and operated by legendary producer Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Let’s Active). Having not previously discussed Henry’s plans, the band members were surprised to discover that their producer—with the invaluable help of engineer/mixer Jason Richmond— intended to record in classic fashion, with all six members singing and playing in a room with no overdubs. Though Steep Canyon Rangers had some trepidation, they promptly rose to the challenge.

“We’ve recorded in a circle before,” Platt says, “but with baffles and other ways to isolate yourself. This record, if I stepped six inches to my left, I’d bump into the mandolin player. Six inches to my right, I’m bumping into the banjo player. Our microphones were all over each other, if you turned off my vocal mic, I was in twelve other ones. So really there was no way to fix anything, just like our live show.”

Indeed, Out in the Open was recorded completely live, with “not one overdub,” says Platt. “Not one vocal, not one instrument.” The organic process allowed SCR to work faster than ever before, tracking a dozen songs in just three-anda-half fertile days. Tracks were jammed, rehearsed, played, and recorded with no time wasted, the band moving on to the next song after just a couple of hot takes. “There’s no sleight of hand,” Sharp says. “It may not be straightforward, but it’s honest.”

“What you lose in perfection,” says Platt, “you gain in energy and authenticity.” Though simply recorded, Out in the Open is richly textured and fully etched, the band’s uncanny interplay and exceptional musicianship enabling them to create worlds with only the bare essentials at their disposal. “Going Midwest” was laid down in but a single take, with all of the song’s power and emotion captured in real time.

“We only played it once,” Platt says. “We just walked in there and played it. Joe came over the speaker and said, get in here. We went in, a couple of the guys were crying during the playback. It was special.” 20 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Steep Canyon Rangers attempted to fast finish a number of additional songs, but Henry wisely advised them to call it a wrap: Out in the Open was complete. With that, the band returned to the endless highway they call home for near 150 nights a year. Indeed, Steep Canyon Rangers are easily among the hardest working bands in any genre, anywhere, pulling double duty on their own and as collaborators with Steve Martin. Since teaming with the legendary actorcomedian-writer-banjo player in 2009, SCR has produced not one but two unique bodies of work, dual catalogues in constant development —along with their own works. The band has teamed with Martin for 2011’s Grammy Awardnominated Rare Bird Alert and 2017’s The Long-Awaited Album, while also backing Martin’s own partnership with Edie Brickell on both 2013’s Love Has Come For You and the sold out tour that followed (captured for posterity on 2014’s Steve Martin And The Steep Canyon Rangers Featuring Edie Brickell — Live CD/DVD). In addition to the highly anticipated release of Out in the Open, 2018 saw Steep Canyon Rangers uniting with their local Asheville Symphony for a series of unprecedented live performances and the recording of yet another new album, once again pushing their increasingly distinctive music into unexpected terrain.

Out in the Open is an undeniable milestone on Steep Canyon Rangers’ ongoing creative journey, its spirited, eclectic approach recasting the myriad sounds of string-based American music in their own unique image. As they fast approach their second decade, Steep Canyon Rangers are still moving forward, as ever searching for new horizons and musical vistas. DOKTOR KABOOM

AND THE WHEEL OF SCIENCE!

February 10, 2019 | Cheng Hall This performance is presented without an intermission.

Doktor Kaboom is the creation of actor/comedian David Epley.

IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE | 21

DOKTOR KABOOM AND THE WHEEL OF SCIENCE! So much science, so little time… Doktor Kaboom is having trouble picking his favorite science demonstrations, so he’s bringing them all! Unfortunately, there are way too many to do them all in one show. The solution: The Wheel of Science! Doktor Kaboom has built a great big spinning wheel and labeled it with everything from optical illusions to chemical reactions to a homemade hovercraft, and more! At least a dozen fantastic demonstrations ready to go. Wherever the wheel stops, that’s what’s next! Will we turn a water bottle into a rocket or catapult bananas across the stage? Electrocute a pickle or create artificial gravity? Who knows? No two shows will be the same. So, step right up, and let’s spin that wheel!

DOKTOR KABOOM / DAVID EPLEY David grew up expecting to be a research physicist. Then a biomedical engineer. Then a mathematician, an astrophysicist, a chemical engineer, a marine biologist. So, he became an actor.

For over 30 years, David has written, directed and performed original comedy shows throughout the United States and around the world. Outdoor festivals and street performance were his primary venues of choice, with

an occasional stage show thrown in for good measure. In 2006, David decided to bring science, his first passion, back into his life. Blending science and theater has been a dream come true: it has opened multiple doors, and has led to the most fulfilling work of his life. Teaching, inspiring and empowering the minds of our youth, and reminding their parents to be an active part of the equation — how could someone’s work be any more rewarding?

David is a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a former firefighter and EMT. He calls Seattle home, where he lives and loves with his wife and their two wonderful daughters. Artist Representation: Shaw Entertainment Group Simon Shaw simon@shaentertainment.com shawentertainment.com
