FESTIVAL BALLET THEATRE WELCOME TO FESTIVAL BALLET THEATRE’S 2019–2020 SEASON!

Our 31st season includes well-loved ballet classics and new works that we are performing for the first time. We are happy to have you here with us for another year of beautiful performances. We thank you for your support.

We open the season with a spellbinding story of heroism and romance, The Firebird, based on a Russian folktale. The last time we performed The Firebird was in 2013, with choreography especially made for Festival Ballet Theatre by esteemed choreographer Nikolai Kabaniaev. This show will also feature excerpts from Chopiniana, Frescoes and Scheherazade, a new original work by Vitor Luiz and Tara Ghassemieh Luiz, which premiered at our 12th Annual Gala of the Stars in August.

In December, our season continues with our beloved production of The Nutcracker, and in March, the timeless classic Swan Lake. The season culminates in August with Festival Ballet Theatre’s 13th Annual Gala of the Stars. This international ballet festival showcases ballet stars from some of the world’s most prestigious dance companies, who perform alongside our own accomplished resident dancers.

Festival Ballet Theatre was founded as a non-profit organization in 1988 and has grown to become Orange County’s premier ballet company. We want to thank you for being a part of our journey over the last 30 years. By watching our shows, donating money and supporting us in any way you can, we have been successful in spreading the art of ballet to more people. For this, we are eternally grateful.

The Firebird first premiered by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in Paris in 1910. Michel Fokine and Alexandre Benois drew inspiration from several books of Russian fairy tales, including the collection of Alexander Afansyev.

FIREBIRD SYNOPSIS Young prince Ivan finds himself in the terrible realm of the giant Kashchei, the immortal entity of pure evil, who imprisons women and transforms men into stone. Not realizing the danger, Ivan rambles through the bewitched garden of Kashchei, where he meets a dazzling Firebird. Struck by the Firebird’s beauty, he steals one of its feathers and runs away. That evening he encounters 13 maidens, who are playing with golden apples, and falls passionately in love with one of them, Princess Vasilisa. The next morning, when the maidens, Kashchei’s prisoners, are compelled by magic to return to his castle, Ivan follows them.

Kashchei’s monstrous servants capture him. As they attempt to transform him into stone, he waves the magical feather that summons the Firebird, who tells him the secret of Kashchei’s immortality: his spirit (in the form of an egg) that he keeps in a coffer, must remain intact. Ivan opens the coffer and breaks the egg. The monster dies, and the magic is dissolved. Everyone he had captured is freed. The kingdom of evil disappears and is replaced by a resplendent city, where Ivan and Vasilisa marry.

Since opening its doors as a ballet studio, SBA and director Salwa Rizkalla have secured a national and international reputation and have played a prominent role in grooming world-class dancers. SBA has grown from a modest one-room facility to eight state-of-theart studios in two Orange County locations — Fountain Valley and Irvine. The Intensive culminates in the Inspired Young Dancer Performance that gives the young dancers an opportunity to refine their performance abilities on stage. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Salwa Rizkalla Artistic Director Salwa Rizkalla has contributed to the Orange County community for more than 30 years by presenting excellence in dance performance through Festival Ballet Theatre and providing top-tier classical ballet training at Southland Ballet Academy.

She had the privilege of working under the direction of world-renowned choreographers Leonid Lavrovsky and Serge Lifar. ABOUT GRAVITY & OTHER MYTHS Gravity & Other Myths is a multi-award-winning and wellrespected Australian acrobatics ensemble. The company creates engaging works of acrobatic art for touring, festivals and corporate clients. Formed in 2009 in Adelaide, South Australia, the ensemble creates and directs their own work with an emphasis on an honest approach to performance. Moving away from traditional circus and theater models, the company aims for a fusion of simple, effective acrobatic physical theater.

ABOUT BACKBONE Backbone examines the various perceptions of what strength is, where it comes from and how it is measured. This frenetic celebration of human interconnectedness will test the limits of strength: physical, emotional, individual and collective. It is set in the here and now. We won’t be transporting you to Verona. We are on a stage. In a theatre. In front of you.

ACROBATS Lachlan Binns became enthralled and inspired by a local circus show at an early age. In the following years, he became drawn into the world of circus and physical performance. Specialising in group acrobatics, Lachy is not quite big enough to be called a base, yet not light enough to be a flyer. He has embraced what he maintains is the vital role of the “middle.” His passion for creativity is a driving force for both his work as a trainer of young people and as a performer and founding member of Gravity & Other Myths.

Jascha Boyce has been a performer for most of her life, beginning as soon as she was able to walk, with dance performances in the lounge room. She discovered circus at age four, and it wasn’t long before she was spending all of her time upside down and in the air. After many years of training, teaching and performing, Jascha now focuses her creative passion on Gravity & Other Myths. She is a flyer in a majority of the group acrobatics, specialising in hula hoop and adagio.

18 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Martin Schreiber. Alongside competitive gymnastics, Martin has been involved in the circus community for most of his life, working as a circus trainer and a performing artist. As one of the founding members of Gravity & Other Myths, Martin has performed both nationally and internationally, displaying his skills in pitching, floor tumbling and group acrobatics. Martin hopes to continue creating new work and inspiring audiences worldwide through the joy and spectacle of the circus.

Jacob Randell is a jack of all trades when it comes to circus and sport, displaying enthusiasm, energy and strong natural talent at all times. As one of the founding members of GOM, he has been with the company since its inception. Jacob specialises in hand to hand, floating between roles as both a base and flyer. He aspires to continue pursuing his adventurous side through the circus, while balancing his training and touring alongside his academic studies.

Joanne Curry always knew she wanted to be the “girl who gets thrown around” in the circus. After seven years of competing nationally in acrobatics, she tumbled into completing certificate 3 and 4 in Circus Arts at NICA (National Institute of Circus Arts). Joanne gained confidence and drive through travel, using the world in finding and defining her style within the performing arts. She specialises in partner acrobatics and hand balancing. Lachlan Harper was four years old when his parents put him into gymnastics in the hopes of tiring him out. After 11 years of training, he sought a new way of exploring his body’s acrobatic capabilities. He got his first taste of the circus when a friend introduced him to pitching. He became obsessed. To have a career where one is thrown around—flipping and having fun—became his dream. He attended the National Institute of Circus Arts, specialising in handstands, acrobatics and banquine.

Mieke Lizotte specialises in high-energy hula hoops. She has an ability to turn herself inside out and upside down and has a knack for being thrown around. She started her career at a young age with the local youth circus, Slipstream Circus, in the small, yet talent-rich, state of Tasmania. After performing and teaching circus across Australia for over six years, she began to train at the National Institute of Circus Arts and the Beijing International Acrobatics School, specializing in hula hoops, flexibility, hand-balancing and acrobatics. She has a genuine love for all things circus, and her contagious smile will no doubt delight audiences everywhere. Jackson Manson started circus at the Flying Fruit Fly Circus (FFFC) in Albury-Wodonga when he was 12 years old. After graduating in 2015, he worked with fellow FFFC graduates in the creation of a new show called Stunt Lounge. In January 2017, he joined Gravity & Other Myths to work on the creation of Backbone. He has continued to work with the company, touring with both A Simple Space and Backbone.

Lewis Rankin has a love for the outdoors and has been involved in sports from an early age. Finding contemporary dance later in life, he trained at Adelaide Centre for the Arts. Since graduating, he has performed with Shaun Parker & Company, Leigh Warren & Dancers, Sandpit and numerous other independent companies. Circus and acrobatics are a recent discovery; and he is passionate about combining and evolving in these different art forms. Lewie West is an Australian acrobat through and through. He literally has circus in his bloodstream due to all the rosin, chalk and acrobat sweat he has accidentally ingested over the years. He attended the Warehouse Youth Circus in Canberra before training at The National Institute of Circus Arts. After earning a bachelor’s degree, Lewie performed with and choreographed for the Brisbane troupe Circa for seven years. During this period, he also found the time to sneak off and earn a gold medal in Paris at the Mondial du Cirque de Demain, or what his Mum calls “The Circus Olympics,” for his solo aerial straps act. In spite of this, Lewie considers himself to be mostly an ensemble acrobat and has admired GOM’s work for years. He is very happy to be in the mix and working with such a great crew.

MUSICIANS

STAGE AND LIGHTING DESIGNER

Elliot Zoerner. Since taking up the drums at age 11, Elliot has played with a wide variety of musical groups in Australia. While he was studying classical percussion and engineering at Adelaide University, the circus entered his life, pulled him away from his studies and took him on tour. He now works as a live musician and composer for GOM, collaborating with the acrobats in the creation of soundtracks for their shows. While on tour, he has continued to write music and release it under the name Sirins.

Geoff Cobham has worked as a production manager, lighting designer, set designer, event producer and venue designer. His love of light and dance has led him to work with many of Australia’s top choreographers and has allowed him to explore the endless combinations associated with color, angle, intensity and the movement of light. He has created lighting design for museums, buildings, public art and freeways with his company, Bluebottle. He has produced many outdoor events for festivals and in 2010 received a Churchill Fellowship to study outdoor theater design in Europe. His accolades include the Helpmann Award for Best Scenic Design for Little Bird; the Ruby Award for Sustained Contribution; a Green Room Award for Best Lighting Design for Night Letters; and Best Lighting Design for Never Did Me Any Harm at the 2012 Sydney Theatre Awards. He is currently the artistic director of Patch Theatre.

Shenton Gregory (a.k.a. Shenzo Gregorio) had a violin passed down to him from his older sister when he was just four years old. After 17 years of classical training, Shenton decided that the realworld experience was the way forward. He continued to develop his knowledge of many styles of music. His invention of playing the violin upside down caused quite a stir. He has been a member of the electric string quartet FourPlay, based in Sydney, Australia, for 12 years. Shenton continues to be one of the highest in-demand musicians in Australia.

DIRECTOR Darcy Grant is a classically trained acrobat, award-winning fine art photographer, physical theater director and founding member of Circa, revered as one of the world’s most adventurous, genre-defying circuses. He has trained, taught and toured work on the cutting edge of new circus to some of the world’s most prestigious venues. Darcy likes to practice at the convergence of theater, dance, circus and visual arts. His visual aesthetic is the foundation to his show-making. In 2017, Darcy was commissioned by Adelaide International Arts Festival to direct Backbone by Gravity & Other Myths—it premiered to 5-star reviews and standing ovations, attracting three Helpmann Award nominations, including those for Best Choreography and Best New Australian Work. A brilliant photographer, Darcy regularly shoots live performance for companies, including Opera Australia and The Farm. Darcy has had solo photographic exhibitions in Brisbane, Melbourne and Berlin. 20 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

ABOUT THE COMPANY MOMIX, a company of dancer-illusionists under the direction of Moses Pendleton, has been presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty for 40 years. From its base in Washington, Connecticut, the company has developed a devoted worldwide following. In addition to stage performances, MOMIX has also worked in film and television, as well as corporate advertising, with national commercials for Hanes and Target, and presentations for Mercedes-Benz, Fiat, and Pirelli. With performances on PBS’s Dance in America series, France’s Antenne II, and Italian RAI television, the company’s repertory has been beamed to 55 countries. The Rhombus Media film of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with MOMIX and the Montreal Symphony was winner of an International Emmy for Best Performing Arts Special. MOMIX was also featured in IMAGINE, one of the first 3-D IMAX films released in IMAX theaters worldwide. MOMIX dancers Cynthia Quinn and Karl Baumann, under Moses Pendleton’s direction, played the role of “Bluey” in the feature film F/X2, and White Widow, co-choreographed by Pendleton and Quinn, was featured in Robert Altman’s movie, The Company. With nothing more than light, shadow, fabric, props and the human body, MOMIX continues to astonish and delight audiences on five continents.

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY Moses Pendleton (Artistic Director) has been one of America’s most innovative and widely performed choreographers and directors for almost 50 years. A co-founder of the groundbreaking Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1971, he formed his own company, MOMIX, in 1980. Mr. Pendleton has also worked extensively in film, TV and opera and as a choreographer for ballet companies and special events.

Mr. Pendleton was born and raised on a dairy farm in Northern Vermont. His earliest experiences as a showman came from exhibiting his family’s dairy cows at the Caledonian County Fair. He received his B.A. in English Literature from Dartmouth College in 1971. Pilobolus began touring immediately, and the group shot to fame in the 1970s, performing on Broadway under the sponsorship of Pierre Cardin, touring internationally and appearing in PBS’s Dance in America and Great Performances series. By the end of the decade, Mr. Pendleton had begun to work outside of Pilobolus, performing in and serving as principal choreographer for the Paris Opera’s Intégrale Erik Satie in 1979 and choreographing the closing ceremony of the

Winter Olympics at Lake Placid in 1980. In that same year, he created MOMIX, which rapidly established an international reputation for inventive and often illusionistic choreography. The troupe has now been creating new work under his direction and touring worldwide for four decades.

Mr. Pendleton has also been active as a performer and choreographer for other companies. He staged Picabia’s Dadaist ballet, Relâche, for the Paris Opera Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet; and Tutuguri, based on the writings of Artaud, for the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He created the role of the Fool for Yuri Lyubimov’s production of Mussorgsky’s Khovanschina at La Scala, choreographed Rameau’s Platée for the U.S. Spoleto Festival and contributed choreography to Lina Wertmuller’s production of Carmen at the Munich State Opera. Mr. Pendleton has created new works for the Arizona Ballet and the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and he teamed up with Danny Ezralow and David Parsons, both former MOMIX dancers, to choreograph AEROS with the Romanian national gymnastics team. Mr. Pendleton choreographed The Doves of Peace, featuring Diana Vishneva and 50 Russian ballerinas, for the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Mr. Pendleton’s film and television work includes the feature film F/X2 with Cynthia Quinn, Moses Pendleton Presents Moses Pendleton for ABC ARTS cable (winner of a CINE Golden Eagle Award) and Pictures at an Exhibition with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony, which received an International Emmy for Best Performing Arts Special in 1991. Mr. Pendleton has also made music videos with Prince, Julian Lennon and Cathy Dennis, among others. Mr. Pendleton is an avid photographer whose work has been presented in Rome, Milan, Florence and Aspen. Images of the sunflower plantings at his home in northwestern Connecticut have been featured in numerous books and articles on gardening. He is the subject of Salto di Gravita by Lisavetta Scarbi (1999), and his photographs accompany the sixteen cantos of Phil Holland’s The Dance Must Follow (2015), which takes Mr. Pendleton’s own creative process as its subject. Mr. Pendleton was a recipient of the Connecticut Commission on the Arts Governor’s Award in 1998. He received the Positano Choreographic Award in 1999 and the 2002 American Choreography Award for his contributions to choreography for film and television. In 2010, Mr. Pendleton received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts (HDFA) from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and delivered the commencement address to the graduates. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1977.

ABOUT THE PACO DE LUCÍA PROJECT The legacies of great artists go well beyond particular masterpieces. In the case of guitarist and composer Paco de Lucía, his playing, his composing, the sound of his ensembles, his entire approach, marked a “before” and “after” in flamenco.

No group has taken up the challenges of that legacy with greater authority than The Paco de Lucía Project. In the 1980s, the guitarist, who had long-established his place in flamenco history, put together a sextet that incorporated jazz and global music elements and exploded flamenco conventions. About 20 years later, he assembled a second, younger group. Brimming with energy and technical brilliance, this second sextet both pushed and freed the master, suggesting tantalizing possibilities for the future. But Paco de Lucía died unexpectedly of a heart attack while on holiday in February 2014. He was 66.

The sextet features Sánchez on guitar; Alain Pérez on bass; Israel Suárez “Piraña,” percussion; Antonio Serrano, harmonica; David de Jacoba, vocals; and flamenco dancer Antonio Fernández “Farruco” (a.k.a. Farru). Except for de Jacoba, who joined later, this is the band captured on de Lucía’s historic double CD, Live in Spain 2010.

Grammy-winning producer and composer Javier Limón, a collaborator and personal friend of de Lucía, masterminded the reunion of the group and produced the CD as a celebration of the legendary guitarist.

“Paco created a new sound with his first group. But then, with this band, he arrived at a different sonority,” says Limón. “And I kept thinking: why are we throwing away a sound that took so many years and so much work to create?

“By the time he assembled the second sextet, Paco was at his peak, he was the wise old man, the master, and the players were all so young. It was a different dynamic,” reflects

Photo: Luis Mali

That last ensemble, reconvened as The Paco de Lucía Project, is now on its second tour of the United States, celebrating the release of The Paco de Lucía Project (Casalimón Records), a live CD documenting the sound of their inaugural tour. As good as that snapshot is, the sextet has continued to evolve while taking on the challenges of de Lucia´s legacy.

“That first experience of touring America, taking this music and Paco’s name everywhere, thinking of him every day—it was magnificent,” says guitarist Antonio Sánchez, the son of Paco’s late older brother. “As we toured with this group, each concert was better than the one before. Luckily, we recorded the one in Miami and it’s now a tribute to Paco.”

Limón. “Alain Pérez is arguably the best Latin bass player of his generation. Antonio Serrano is the best jazz musician in Spain; and you have Piraña, whom Paco loved, the best percussionist in flamenco’s history. And then you have Antonio and David and Farruco…each one of them is a soloist, a leader. This band is the best flamenco group in the world.”

Meanwhile, guitarist Antonio Sánchez has embraced the challenges of his uncle´s legacy with unfailing grace. “I take carrying on Paco’s music with great humility. It’s a real challenge,” said Sánchez, who joined his uncle’s group as a second guitar in 2010. “The name is a burden only if you don´t study, if you don´t apply yourself and work. Working with this group is a huge responsibility, very demanding, but it also brings out a lot of love on my part — and no fear. On the contrary, I was eager to do this. It has been great to remember him every day in his music, but also it has been great to see how this group has evolved, matured.”

While accompanying de Lucía, the members of the group showcased their talents mostly in the space for jazz-style soloing that the guitarist had opened in his music. As it turns out, besides the obvious challenges, the sextet’s reunion also presented opportunities. “Every day we seem to be doing something different, and it’s great fun, very enjoyable, and it brings us together,” said Sánchez. “And we also started to realize that we can pay tribute to Paco with our own music. There will always be classics by Paco in the program, songs like “Zyryab” or a rumba like “El Cafetal,” but now, also, of [our own] compositions, things we used to do with him in rehearsals, which were never recorded. It’s a chance to capture and bring back some of those little things we had with Paco, and it’s beautiful.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS Alain Pérez (Bass) was born in Trinidad, Cuba, and his early musical studies included classical guitar and piano. His early Cuban musical credits include recordings with Chucho Valdés and Issac Delgado. He was part of the “Cuba Team All-Stars,” who toured Europe in 1998. He made his recording debut with Paco de Lucía in 2004 on the Latin Grammy Award-winning CD, Cositas Buenas, produced by Javier Limón. Pérez has collaborated with Celia Cruz, Enrique Morente, Paquito D’Rivera, Chick Corea, Diego el Cigala, Jerry González, among others. He has released a number of solo recordings, including the 2015 CDs El Alma del Son: A Tribute to Matamoros and Hablando con Juana.

Antonio Serrano (Harmonica) is a Madrid native who has studied harmonica from the age of seven. He studied under the great Larry Adler, with whom he first achieved international recognition on the European concert stage. His studies have ranged from the classical idiom to that of blues, jazz and pop. He has played with or recorded with Toots Thielemans and Wynton Marsalis and has performed original classical concertos for harmonica, as well as arrangements of Gershwin, Piazzolla and others. He and Paco de Lucía are credited with introducing the harmonica to flamenco when Serrano joined the guitarist’s ensemble in 2004. He has released 11 solo albums, including Harmonious (2012).

Antonio Sánchez (Guitar), born in Madrid in 1984, began to study flamenco guitar at an early age with his uncles Paco de Lucia and Ramón de Algeciras, and with his cousin, José María Bandera. He continued his training with the maestro Juan Manuel Cañizares. His started his career in the flamenco tablaos of Madrid and Barcelona, touring with the flamenco ballet companies of Antonio Marquez and Domingo Ortega. In 2010, he joined the Paco de Lucia ensemble as second guitar, touring with de Lucía throughout Europe and North America.

David de Jacoba (Vocals) is considered one of the most important young flamenco artists in the world today. His debut album, Jubileo, produced by Lucky Losada and Carlos de Jacoba, was nominated for Best Album by a New Singer at the Flamenco Hoy Awards. The CD features a who’s who of flamenco stars, from Pepe Habichuela and Vicente Amigo to Juan Antonio Salazar and Tomatito. Paco de Lucía chose David to accompany him during his last four years on tour. David’s credits also include collaborations with flamenco greats Enrique Morente, Joaquín Cortés, Sara Baras, Niño Josele and Duquende, as well as leading figures in Latin jazz, including Giovanni Hidalgo and Jerry González. Israel Suarez “Piraña” (Percussion) is one of the most renowned cajón (box drum) players in the world. He began his career with the singer Niña Pastori and has performed with a panoply of major stars, including Vicente Amigo, Sara Baras, Antonio Canales, Arcángel, Luz Casal, and Buika, as well as American pop artist Lenny Kravitz, Portuguese fado star Mariza and Latin pop singers Ricky Martin and Alejandro Fernández. Piraña (whose nickname refers to the ferocious piranha fish) toured and recorded with Paco de Lucía’s ensemble for over 10 years, a special honor given De Lucía’s groundbreaking role in introducing the Peruvian cajón to the traditional flamenco ensemble.

Farruco (Dancer) is the brother of the great dancer Farruquito. Born Antonio Fernández Montoya in Seville in 1988, he took his famous grandfather’s artistic name, Farruco, as his own. He made his debut on the international flamenco scene in Berlin at the age of two; and made his U.S. debut in 2001 in his brother’s show, Farruquito and Family. In 2006, he premiered his first solo show and embarked on a world tour that included the New York City Center. His credits reach beyond flamenco, including performances with Beyoncé, Björk, Marc Anthony and Paulina Rubio. He toured his second choreographed work, Los Farruco, from 2008 to 2009. During this period, he also found the time to write music and lyrics for Tomatito, Los Makarines, and for his brother’s flamenco show, Puro. In 2010, he joined Paco de Lucía’s company, performing in over 100 shows worldwide with the guitar legend. Javier Limón (Producer). A graduate of the Madrid Royal Conservatory, where he studied classical piano, oboe and guitar, Javier Limón began his career as a composer, working with various flamenco artists. Raised in Spain, he traveled to New York City at an early age to train in American arts schools. After meeting Bebo Valdés and Jerry González, Limón began working in Latin jazz with Cuban musicians, in addition to working in flamenco. In 2004, Limón was awarded the Latin Grammy for Producer of the Year for his work on five records: Lágrimas Negras by Diego el Cigala

and Bebo Valdés; Cositas Buenas by Paco de Lucía; El Cantante by Andrés Calamaro; El Pequeño Reloj by Enrique Morente; Niño Josele by Niño Josele; and the multi-artist collection Tributo Flamenco a Don Juan Valderrama. In 2009, Limón won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for recording Juntos Para Siempre, a series of father-and-son piano duets by Bebo and Chucho Valdés. Limón has combined several professional occupations within the worlds of art and communication. Although he has mainly focused on composition and the production of albums, film scores and television shows, his work as a communicator and teacher is equally impressive. He is currently the artistic director of the Mediterranean Music Institute at the Berklee College of Music. Artist Representation: IMG Artists Toby Tumarkin ttumarkin@imgartists.com imgartists.com

MANDY GONZALEZ Mandy Gonzalez has thrilled audiences on Broadway, lit up the screen on television, and started a social movement.

Mandy Gonzalez possesses one of the most powerful and versatile contemporary voices of our time. Currently starring in the megahit Hamilton as Angelica Schuyler, Mandy also originated and starred as Nina Rosario in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, In The Heights, for which she received a Drama Desk Award. She starred as Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked, blowing the roof off of New York’s Gershwin Theatre each night as she belted out the signature song, “Defying Gravity,” and for which she was honored with a Broadway.com Award for Best Replacement. Other Broadway roles include Princess Amneris in the Elton John and Tim Rice musical Aida; and Lennon, where she portrayed the Beatles icon John Lennon. Mandy made her Broadway debut in Jim Steinman’s Dance of the Vampires, starring opposite Michael Crawford.

Mandy received an Obie Award and overwhelming critical praise for her performance in the Off-Broadway production of Eli’s Comin’, directed by Diane Paulus and based on the music and lyrics of singer-songwriter Laura Nyro.

Television viewers have the pleasure of seeing Mandy in the recurring role of Lucy Knox on the hit CBS drama Madam Secretary. JAVIER MUÑOZ

Javier Muñoz’s passion for the stage has spanned many years and cities. His love of theater began in high school during a production of The King and I in Brooklyn, New York.

His passion for acting only grew when he was signed by an agent before his high school graduation, leading him to enroll in NYU’s Tisch School for the Arts. Not a stranger to hard work, Muñoz participated in the AmeriCorps work-study program, which allowed him to pay his way through college. Through AmeriCorps, Muñoz taught theater in community programs and schools throughout New York City. Muñoz became the first person in his family to graduate from college, and was also one of two honorees to receive the Community Service Award upon his graduation from Tisch School for the Arts. Also, during this time, Muñoz worked closely with the non-profit organization, Children & The Classics, promoting literacy in schools throughout New York City. Muñoz has performed in various regional theater projects, including The Porch (Ziad) at Altered Stages; Venice (Venice) at Center Theatre Group; Two Gentlemen of Verona (Proteus) at Shakespeare Theatre of D.C.; Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Richard III (Dorset) and Into the Woods (The Baker). In 2005, Muñoz auditioned for Lin-Manuel Miranda, writer, composer and star of the Tony-winning hit In the Heights. Miranda chose Muñoz as his understudy in the role of Usnavi, which Muñoz later assumed full-time upon Miranda’s departure. When Miranda began writing the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning smash Hamilton, Muñoz was an active part of the musical’s early development and creation. They developed the role of Alexander Hamilton together, and Muñoz served as Miranda’s alternate at the Public Theater Off-Broadway debut in 2015, as well as throughout the Broadway engagement. On July 11th, 2016, Muñoz assumed the title role of Alexander Hamilton full-time on Broadway; and played his final performance in the title role on January 14, 2018.

Muñoz appeared on the third and final season of the Freeform/Netflix hit series, Shadowhunters, which was awarded the 2018 People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Show. Next up, Muñoz will star in Jack Newell’s dark comedy, Monuments, opposite David Sullivan and Marguerite Moreau. Muñoz was honored with the prestigious 2016 OUT100 Breakout of the Year Award, as well as the Howard Ashman Award by the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC).
