SHELÉA With a voice that stirs the soul and hands that glide effortlessly over the keys, Sheléa represents a return to true artistry that has garnered attention and adoration from legends throughout the music industry. Her sultry sound is an exciting oasis in an age of auto-tune. Blending traditional pop, jazz, R&B and soul, Sheléa brings a contemporary edge to classics and a classic touch to contemporary pop standards.

Anthony Hamilton as part of PBS’ Smithsonian Salute to Ray Charles. That same year, Sheléa made her acting debut in the HBO Emmy-nominated film All the Way. In 2017, Sheléa had the distinct honor of being selected by Quincy Jones to be the first vocalist at his jazz club, Q’s Bar and Lounge, at the Palazzo Versace Dubai, where she performed a month-long residency. Word quickly spread and Sheléa’s international appeal made the club the premier choice for entertainment. Later that year, she made her Carnegie Hall debut in a tribute performance to Jimmy Webb. Demand for Sheléa has continued to grow over the past year with tours including Kirk Whalum’s Gospel According to Jazz; An Intimate Evening with David Foster: Hitman Tour; and the Dave Koz and Friends Christmas Tour.

Sheléa began as a songwriter/vocalist with legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Her early career experience led to writing and producing for Chanté Moore’s album Love the Woman and recording vocals for major motion picture soundtracks, including Hotel Rwanda, Akeelah and the Bee and Be Cool. In 2008, Sheléa teamed up with the Grammy Award-winning Take 6, singing “Someone to Watch Over Me” on their Grammy-nominated album, The Standard. She went on to compose and perform the theme song “Love Fell on Me” for SONY’s Jumping the Broom (2011) starring Angela Bassett. Sheléa’s debut album, Love Fell on Me, was released in 2014, featuring heavyweights Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight and Narada Michael Walden. The single, “I’ll Never Let You Go,” peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard R&B charts and charted for 22+ weeks.

Sheléa has shared her talents at numerous charitable events in support of causes that hold personal importance. In 2012, Sheléa joined Annie Lennox, Herbie Hancock, Joan Osborne, Patti Austin and the South African Children’s Choir at The Kennedy Center to perform for the UN International AIDS Conference. A staunch advocate of female empowerment, she appeared at the global launch of One Billion Rising, headed by Eve Ensler, performing the anthem “Break the Chain.” She closed the 2016 TEDWomen Conference in San Francisco; and performed for the National Women’s History Museum honoring Jennifer Siebel Newsom and Dolores Huerta. As a member of the Recording Academy, Sheléa was a guest speaker at the 2018 Grammy Museum Summer Sessions, sharing her insights with high school students on the value of music, the craft of songwriting, vocal technique and overall professional development.

In the 2019–20 season, Sheléa debuts with the Seattle Symphony and Naples Philharmonic and tours internationally and in the U.S. with her own band. She stars in the upcoming Lifetime biopic based on gospel group the Clark Sisters, executive produced by Queen Latifah.

As Sheléa’s profile grew in the world of R&B, it quickly became clear that her enormous talent was destined to transcend the confines of any single Billboard chart, musical genre or label. In 2012, Sheléa performed at the White House to honor composers Burt Bacharach and Hal David with the Gershwin Prize. The success of that appearance led to a standing-ovation performance at the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Awards, where she sang the classic “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” honoring the late Hal David. Sheléa was later invited back to the Library of Congress, where she performed with Narada Michael Walden for ASCAP’s We Write the Songs. While rehearsing for this event, Sheléa made a lasting impression on husband-and-wife songwriting duo Alan and Marilyn Bergman, musical legends and paragons of the contemporary American Songbook, especially the catalogue of Barbra Streisand (one of Sheléa’s greatest musical inspirations). Over the past several years, Sheléa’s star has continued to rise. In 2015, she headlined a tour with Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright and Norman Brown, and soon after joined mentor Stevie Wonder for his Songs in the Key of Life tour. In 2016, Sheléa returned to the White House to perform with 8 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

In 2019, Sheléa starred in the concert special, Quincy Jones Presents: Sheléa, broadcast on PBS, and was joined by special guests David Foster and Greg Phillinganes. Sheléa also released her much-anticipated third album, Pretty World: Through the Eyes of Alan and Marilyn Bergman (Breath of Life Records/Universal). The album consists of 11 songs handpicked by the Bergmans, including neverbefore released songs and a new arrangement of “Make Me Rainbows,” which Sheléa debuted at the ASCAP Jazz Awards honoring Marilyn Bergman. Sheléa is joined on the album by some very special guests who have been instrumental throughout her career, including Stevie Wonder, Kirk Whalum, Take 6 and Greg Phillinganes. Schmitt, a Django look-alike with his pencil-thin mustache, gifted on the guitar and violin, suffered a terrible accident, years ago, just as Django did in his own life. Dorado was in a car accident that put him in a coma for a long time and damaged his body; but he miraculously recovered. The loss of two fingers in a fire in his caravan led to the incredible style of music he has created due to his special fingering on the guitar. Dorado carries on the legacy of Django with the help of other gifted musicians, and is a legend of gypsy jazz. The general public discovered Schmitt upon seeing him in the 1993 French documentary film Latcho Drom (Safe Journey), which tells the real story of the Roma people’s journey from north-west India to Spain.

Dorado Schmitt

THE DJANGO FESTIVAL ALL-STARS The Django Festival All-Stars bring the music of the legendary gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt fully into the 21st century. Their unique, high-energy performances pay attribute to Reinhardt, who is considered one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Reinhardt’s driving, swinging style became known as “hot jazz,” and it continues to grow in popularity throughout the world…in great part to the success of The Django Festival All-Stars, who honor the traditions of this gypsy jazz, adding their own interpretations, arrangements and original compositions with stunning virtuosity. The group’s first studio album, Attitude Manouche, was released in 2018.

DORADO SCHMITT

Dorado Schmitt (Lead Guitar and Violin) started touring in the U.S. in 2002 and has been a star attraction at major festivals, concert halls, clubs and at the Birdland jazz club— home of The Django Reinhardt New York Festival. He has played alongside some of the U.S.’ most important artists, including James Carter, Paquito D’Rivera, George Benson, Joe Lovano, Harry Allen, Regina Carter, Anat Cohen, and so many others.

10 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Born in Saint-Avold, Lorraine, in 1957, Dorado Schmitt was surrounded by musicians throughout his youth, in particular, his father. He picked up the guitar at age seven. At around 15, his musical taste went toward pop and rock music played by the likes of Santana and Jimi Hendrix. But in 1978, he started to perform in the Django style upon forming the Dorado Trio with fellow musicians Gino Heplays on violin and Hono Winterstein on guitar. He went on to play alongside such greats as Bireli Lagrene, Stochelo Rosenberg, and many others. Dorado stands as one of the most in-demand gypsy jazz artists in the business, playing with musicians all over the world. But now he is mainly committed to playing with his family, whom he taught music, just as his father had taught him. He is happy to be such an important part of The Django Festival All-Stars.

SAMSON SCHMITT

Samson Schmitt (Lead Guitar) has appeared in major U.S. cities and at festivals and clubs throughout Europe. Born in 1979, he learned to play the guitar from his father, Dorado Schmitt. At age 12, he played in public for the first time at the International Jazz Festival in Munich, Germany. Mr. Schmitt has been influenced by George Benson, Richard Galliano, Biréli Lagrène, Toots Thielemans, Florin Niculescu, Didier Lockwood, Sylvain Luc, Dominique Di Piazza and Angelo Debarre. Between 1990 and 1999, Mr. Schmitt played with the Dorado Schmitt Quintet, the Kakiweiss Group and with Hono and Gino Reinhardt. In 2000 and 2001, he performed with Alexandre Cavalieres, Tchavolo Schmitt, Povro Sinto, Angelo Debarre and Jimmy Rosenberg. He also leads and performs with his own group, the Samson Schmitt Quartet, with electric bass player Dominique De Piazza as a frequent guest. He has played at many festivals and events, including Les Nuits de la Guitare in Patrimonio, Corsica, and the Sons d’hiver festival in Paris. In 2002, he recorded his first CD, Djieske. Mr. Schmitt is a permanent leading member of The Django Festival All-Stars, touring the U.S. for many years with appearances at various venues, including The Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl.

AMATI SCHMITT

FRANKO MEHRSTEIN

Amati Schmitt (Lead Guitar) is the youngest son of the legendary gypsy guitarist Dorado Schmitt. He is following in his father’s footsteps, quickly becoming one of the young jazz stars of Europe. He started coming to the U.S. a few years ago to take part in The Django Reinhardt New York Festival at Birdland. He performs at festivals and clubs with his father throughout Europe; and in 2015, he toured for the first time throughout the U.S. with The Django Festival AllStars, appearing at the Hollywood Bowl to standing ovations.

Franko Mehrstein (Rhythm Guitar) learned to play rhythmic guitar at age eight from his father, Sony Reinhardt. Proud of his Gypsy background, Mr. Mehrstein spent his younger years surrounded by his family of musicians and perfecting his craft during various celebrations and parties. As he matured, his music became more specialized with the help of his uncle, Mandino Reinhardt. He created his first album alongside Dino Mehrstein, his soloist brother; and the success of their first tour turned him into a professional artist. His inimitable accompaniment has allowed him to reach across borders. He has toured with Mandino Reinhardt in Colombia and Venezuela and has played alongside Dorado Schmitt at The Django Reinhardt Festival at the legendary Birdland jazz club in New York. A stable and endearing accompanist, Mr. Mehrstein has worked with Tchavolo Schmitt, May Hubert, Samson Schmitt, Amati Schmitt, Ludovic Beier, Pierre Blanchard, Railo Helmstetter and Timbo Mehrstein. He has performed throughout Europe at various festivals and clubs, and his talent as an accompanist and composer is widely recognized.

PIERRE BLANCHARD

Pierre Blanchard (Violin), a violin virtuoso, was born in Saint-Quentin, France, in 1956. Mr. Blanchard was trained at a very high level in classical music, composition and arrangement. His jazz career began when he joined the Martial Solal Big Band (1981–1986) as a violin soloist. During this time, he met Stéphane Grappelli (“the grandfather of jazz violinists”) with whom he played at the Théâtre du Châtelet and Festival de la Villette. In 1984, he was given Grappelli’s Michel Warlop violin. He has performed throughout Europe with Vince Mendoza, Michel Legrand, Toots Thielemans, Lee Konitz, Jackie McLean, Max Roach, Billy Higgins, Ornette Coleman, Jean-Luc Ponty, and the Gotan Project. He has been playing with The Django Festival All-Stars at The Django Reinhardt Festival at Birdland and touring throughout the U.S. for many years. In addition, Mr. Blanchard has also performed with Bob Mover, Larry Schneider, Jasper van ‘t Hof, Philip Catherine, André Ceccarelli and Manu Katché and has taught at some of the top universities in France.

LUDOVIC BEIER

Ludovic Beier (Accordion and Accordina) has been a regular at The Django Reinhardt New York Festival playing accordion and accordina, a very interesting instrument, sometimes called a mouth accordion. He performs at major festivals all over the world alongside the greats of jazz. Born in 1978, he has been a jazz musician at heart since his childhood. His idols are Chick Corea, George Duke, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and George Benson. Playing alongside the legendary guitarist Angelo Debarre in Europe marked the beginning of his career as a jazz musician. At the Birdland jazz club in New York, he has had the opportunity to play with Dorado Schmitt, Samson Schmitt, Tchavolo Schmitt and many American jazz legends, including Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Lovano and Roger Kellaway. He has recorded many CDs, including the original motion picture soundtrack of Fabrice Benchaouche’s film, Timgad (2017). He has performed at Carnegie Hall in The Magic of Toots: A Tribute to Toots Thielemans, alongside Herbie Hancock, Eliane Elias and Ivan Lins. DownBeat has stated that Mr. Beier’s playing is “reminiscent of Toots Thielemans at his zenith.”

GINO ROMAN

Gino Roman (Bass) was born in 1983 and started playing music by sitting at a drum set when he was three years old; he was hardly six when he began to play rock ’n’ roll and swing music with his father. At 15 years of age, he started playing electric bass, recommended to him by his cousin, and later turned to the double bass after playing with his trio at age 21. His influences include Jaco Pastorius, Chick Corea, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and, of course, Django. He has been fortunate to play with the greats, including Dorado, Samson and Amati Schmitt, as well as Marcel Loeffler, Hono and Brady Winterstein, Benji and Popots Winterstein, Jimmy Rosenberg, Moreno Winterstein, Steeve Laffont, Yorgui Loeffler, Martin Weiss, Pascal Mission, and many others. NEW ORLEANS JAZZ ORCHESTRA New Orleans is a musical melting pot that has been cooking up music royalty for nearly a century. The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO) was formed in 2002 and is dedicated to preserving the tradition of New Orleans music and culture while exploring the works of artists that would be considered outside of the realm of jazz. Led by Artistic Director Adonis Rose, this 18-piece big band has an ever-increasing repertoire that exemplifies the influence of jazz as the grandfather of all modern American music. As such, the band and its members are true ambassadors of American music. The members of the orchestra span several generations and have over one hundred years of combined professional experience. They have performed and recorded with a veritable who’s who of artists across all genres. The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra has headlined all of America’s major performing arts venues and clubs, and produced the first local, ticketed Jazz Concert Series in New Orleans’ history. New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s album, BOOK ONE, released on World Village (Harmonia Mundi) won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble. Their album, Dee Dee’s Feather’s, was released in 2015 and features Grammy and Tony award-winning vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater.

On their recent 2019 release, Songs: The Music of Allen Toussaint, NOJO takes a look into the mind and music of New Orleans’ piano legend Allen Toussaint. Toussaint, who passed away in 2015, left his deepest footprints in R&B and rock ’n’ roll. However, he was also a major figure in the development of New Orleans funk; resonated in country music (by way of Glen Campbell’s smash hit cover of “Southern Nights”); and, of course, was steeped in jazz. “[It] was in his blood,” Rose says. “There’s always some connection to jazz: When you’re from New Orleans, there’s no way around it.”

Allen Toussaint was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. In its inimitable swinging style, the Orchestra performs original big band arrangements of Toussaint’s greatest hits, including “Southern Nights,” “With You in Mind,” “It’s Raining,” “Ruler of My Heart,” “Java” and “Working in the Coal Mine.”

NOJO 7

NOJO 7 is a dynamic, smaller ensemble drawn from the full New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Playing within the New Orleans brass band style, the group has the versatility to perform within various musical idioms and has a broad repertoire that encompasses traditional New Orleans music, funk, R&B and original compositions. The band tours with Ledisi, and has collaborated with the rapper Slick Rick, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Eric Benét, and several other major performing artists.

ADONIS ROSE

Adonis Rose was born in New Orleans in 1975. He began playing drums at three years of age, following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, and as a teenager became enamored with the music of fellow New Orleanians, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, with whose father, Ellis, Adonis 16 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

studied at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). Rose won a prestigious presidential scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston; just afterward, however, Terence Blanchard called and invited him to tour. “So, two days after my high school graduation I went out on the road with Terence. That was my first gig,” he recalls. He continued to get work with Betty Carter, Marlon Jordan, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, ultimately dropping out of Berklee to go on the road and make a home in New Orleans.

In 2002, Rose became the founding drummer for the nonprofit, Grammy-winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO), the only institution in jazz’s birthplace that is committed solely to the music’s development. He maintained that position even after moving to Fort Worth, Texas, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, where he taught at the University of Texas at Arlington and established the Fort Worth Jazz Orchestra. Rose moved back to the Crescent City in 2015, by which time NOJO was his steadiest gig. In 2016, Rose became the artistic director of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. In October 2017, he led the 18-piece orchestra to its first concert season in two years, bringing in world-renowned artists Sheila E, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ledisi, Slick Rick and Eric Benét to perform with NOJO at the orchestra’s 380 seat venue, the New Orleans Jazz Market. With over 50 recordings to his credit, five as a leader, Rose has performed and recorded with the biggest names in jazz for over two decades, including Terence Blanchard, Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Marcus Roberts, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Harry Connick, Jr, Wynton Marsalis, and six recordings with longtime friend Nicholas Payton. He still currently performs and tours with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Nnenna Freelon, Ellis Marsalis and Kurt Elling.

Rose is instrumental in the organization’s success by developing programs, performances and partnerships year-round. Rose just finished NOJO’s newest recording project in three years, a tribute to the legendary Allen Toussaint. The CD, Songs: The Music of Allen Toussaint (Storyville Records) was released in spring 2019. The album features six songs by Toussaint and one associated with him, as well as two original tribute pieces.

For all its uplift of Allen Toussaint and of New Orleans, Songs is also a personal triumph for Rose. Following the controversial departure of founder Irvin Mayfield from NOJO and its subsequent loss of institutional support, he set himself to the fearsome task of rebuilding the orchestra while keeping its sterling musical reputation intact. He succeeded. “Almost all of our shows since we started back have sold out,” he says. “All of the band members, every single last one of them, came back. The musicians who built this organization, put it on their backs night after night, those are the ones that are doing it again now, along with me.” Songs: The Music of Allen Toussaint thus stands as a monument to Rose’s accomplishment. Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally, and she is featured on their album, Get Happy. Storm has also sung with Grammy winner k.d. lang, pianist Kirill Gerstein, punk rocker John Doe, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton.

STORM LARGE Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day.

Storm spent the 90s singing in clubs throughout San Francisco. Tired of the club scene, she moved to Portland to pursue a new career as a chef, but a last-minute cancellation in 2002 at the Portland club, Dante’s, turned into a standing Wednesday night engagement for Storm and her new band, The Balls. It wasn’t long before Storm had a cult-like following in Portland, and a renewed singing career that was soon to be launched onto the international stage.

In the 2018–19 season, Storm performed her one-woman autobiographical musical memoir Crazy Enough at La Jolla Music Society and Portland Center Stage, celebrating the show’s ten-year anniversary. Recent engagements include debuts with the Philly Pops, members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Seattle Symphony, as well as return engagements with the Houston, Detroit, Toronto and BBC Symphonies; the New York Pops; and the Louisville Orchestra, with whom she recorded the 2017 album All In. Storm continues to tour concert halls across the country with her band Le Bonheur and as a special guest on Michael Feinstein’s Shaken & Stirred tour. Alongside Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey, Storm joined Michael Feinstein as special guest with the Pasadena Pops. 18 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

She debuted with the Oregon Symphony in 2010, and has returned for sold out performances each year thereafter. Storm made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2013, singing Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Detroit Symphony as part of the Spring for Music Festival. The New York Times called her “sensational,” and the classical music world instantly had a new star.

In 2007, Storm starred in Portland Center Stage’s production of Cabaret with Wade McCollum. The show was a smash hit, earning Large glowing reviews. Her next endeavor, the musical memoir Crazy Enough, played to packed houses in 2009 during its unprecedented 21-week sold-out run in Portland. Storm went on to perform a cabaret version of the show to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival in Australia and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir, Crazy Enough, was released by Simon and Schuster in 2012. It was named Oprah’s Book of the Week and was awarded the 2013 Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. Storm is featured in Rid of Me, a film by Portlander James Westby, starring Katie O’Grady and Theresa Russell. In 2010, she starred at the Mark Taper Forum with Katey Sagal and Michael McKean in Jerry Zak’s production of Harps and Angels, a musical featuring the work of Randy Newman. In the fall of 2014, Storm and Le Bonheur released a record designed to capture their sublime and subversive interpretations of the American Songbook. Entitled simply Le Bonheur and released on Pink Martini’s Heinz Records, the recording is a collection of tortured and titillating love songs: beautiful, familiar, yet twisted … much like the lady herself. ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL Asleep at the Wheel has seen miles and miles of Texas, and they got their kicks on Route 66. Now in their 49th year, the band continues to introduce the western swing genre to a new generation. “It’s been an amazing ride. From Paw Paw to San Francisco to Austin, we’ve seen it all,” says Wheel front man Ray Benson. “But, rest assured, there are still so many exciting projects in the works. The Wheel keeps rolling!” It all started when Ray Benson, Floyd Domino and Lucky Oceans, along with a Vermont farm boy named Leroy Preston, Virginian Chris O’Connell, and Gene Dobkin, a bass player and fellow classmate of Benson’s joined forces. They began with a simple goal: to play and help revive American roots music.

Asleep at the Wheel landed a gig opening for Alice Cooper and Hot Tuna in Washington, D.C. in 1970. At the height of the Vietnam War, many Americans were using their choice of music to express their stance on the conflict in Southeast Asia. “We wanted to break that mold,” said Benson. “We were concerned more with this amazing roots music, which we felt was being lost amid the politics. We were too country for the rock folks and we were too long-haired for the country folks. But everybody got over it once the music started playing.” A year later, they were coaxed into moving to California by Commander Cody, leader of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. But the band’s big break came when Morrison mentioned them in an interview with Rolling Stone. The record offers started coming in and the Wheel got rolling.

The musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel has become the stuff of legends. Reuter’s pegged the Wheel as “one of the best live acts in the business.” The band has consistently toured at a national level throughout its history; with anywhere from 7 to 15 of the finest players Ray Benson could talk into jumping in the bus to play a string of dates. The alumni roster is well over 80-plus members, and includes an impressive list of musicians who have gone on to perform with artists such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, Ryan Adams, among many others.

Ray Benson fell in love with western swing because of its unique combination of elements of American blues, swing and traditional fiddling, but also for its demanding musical chops. Western swing is what Benson calls “jazz with a cowboy hat.” It’s a thrill to hear live, and thanks in large part to the Wheel’s 40-plus years of promotion, is a living and creative genre of music today.

In 2018, Asleep at the Wheel released New Routes. The 11-track collection includes a blend of originals and exciting covers, and a guest vocal appearance by Seth and Scott Avett of The Avett Brothers. The band’s 2015 release, Still the King: Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, garnered the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. The critically acclaimed album was named one of Rolling Stone’s 40 Best Country Albums of 2015. Featuring 22 acclaimed collaborations, the all-star line-up includes legends such as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and George Strait, The Avett Brothers, Amos Lee, Old Crow Medicine Show and many other fine talents. Over their history, Asleep at The Wheel has driven the genre to the edge; explored new territories; picked up new passengers along the way and crisscrossed the country to the delight of fans and critics alike.

The band has released more than 25 studio and live albums, earned 10 Grammy Awards, an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award, Academy of Country Music Award, and an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction; and there is no sign of slowing down any time soon. PROGRAM Repertoire will be selected from the following and announced from the stage. Don Oíche Úd i mBeithil (Song) Traditional/Arranged by Danú

This is a 16th-century Christmas carol set to an Irish text by the poet and theologian Aodh Mac Aingil Mac Cathmhaoil (1571– 1626). The title translates as “I sing of that night in Bethlehem.” Miss Fogarty’s Christmas Cake (Song) Traditional/Arranged by Danú

This very funny song is all about the traditional Irish Christmas cake. The Christmas cake is the center-piece of every Irish gathering at this time of year. Danú encourages everybody to join in on the funny chorus to this song. Here are the lyrics of the chorus: There were plums and prunes and cherries, There were citrons and raisins and cinnamon, too There was nutmeg, cloves and berries And a crust that was nailed on with glue There were caraway seeds in abundance Such that work up a fine stomach ache That could kill a man twice after eating a slice Of Miss Fogarty’s Christmas cake. The Wren Song (Song) Traditional/Arranged by Danú

The day after Christmas Day (December 26th) is also known as St. Stephens Day or Wren’s Day in Ireland. The ancient tradition consists of people dressing up in costumes, which were made from straw, and going out on a parade. The Wren Boys, as these crowds were often called, would travel from house to house, playing music, singing and dancing. This “Wren Song” is the most well-known song attributed to this tradition.

Oiche Chiuin/Silent Night (Song) Traditional/Arranged by Danú

“Silent Night” is a song that is known the world over. We perform it as “Oiche Chiuin” in the Irish language and follow it into the English version, encouraging everybody to join in and sing along with us. Christmas Eve Reel (Instrumental) Traditional/Arranged by Danú

“Christmas Eve Reel” is probably the most well-known Christmas tune in Ireland. It would not be Christmas time for Irish musicians without the “Christmas Eve Reel.” The Holly it Bears a Berry (Song) Traditional/Arranged by Danú

A lovely and well-loved Christmas carol, “The Holly it Bears a Berry” comes from Ireland’s Celtic neighbors in Cornwall. It has been performed by many great Irish singers over the years. Danú encourages everybody to join in on the beautiful chorus. Here are the lyrics of the chorus: And Mary she bore Jesus our Savior for to be, And the first tree that’s in the greenwood, it was the holly. Holly! Holly! And the first tree that’s in the greenwood, it was the holly! Slides/Polkas Set (Instrumental) Traditional/Arranged by Danú

The lively slides and polkas are most associated with the southern counties of Ireland and have group or set dances. They are always played at music sessions and gatherings, especially during the Christmas holiday.

DANÚ Hailing from Counties Waterford, Cork, Dublin and Donegal in Ireland, Danú is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles of today. The band formed in 1995 as part of Ireland’s delegation to Lorient Inter-Celtic Festival in Brittany, France, an annual event that is the biggest gathering of Celtic nations in the world. The debut album simply entitled Danú was released by the band in 1997 to huge critical acclaim, and in 1999, Danú signed a multi-album record deal with the U.S.-based recording label, Shanachie Entertainment, with whom they subsequently released five albums and a live DVD internationally between 2000 and 2006. Over the past few years, Danú has added three independent releases to their discography.

For over two decades, Danú’s virtuosi players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki and vocals (Irish and English) have delighted audiences worldwide. Winners of numerous awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine, 22 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Danú has toured throughout Europe and North America with stops at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Symphony Space in New York City. Danú takes its audiences on a musical journey to their native Ireland, offering a moving and memorable concert experience.

Danú welcomed star vocalist Nell Ní Chróinín into the fold in 2016, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the band’s legacy. Nell’s multiple awards include TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year 2012. She was also the winner of the prestigious Oireachtas Corn Uí Riada award in 2014. Danú’s live performances are often broadcasted on RTE, TG4, BBC, NPR and CBC. Visit Danú: www.danu.net Artist Representation: Baylin Artists Management www.baylinartists.com
