WELCOME IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE.
The year 2020 is already shaping up to be a fabulous year! It’s especially dear to us because on October 10, 2020, Irvine Barclay Theatre will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. And we certainly have a lot to celebrate—another extraordinary season of stellar performances, a brand new website, the launch of our Jewel Box Seat Campaign, the expansion of ArtsReach, and capital upgrades throughout the facility. But most important of all, we celebrate you, our Barclay family! The Barclay has been our community’s home for the arts for the last 3 decades. We exist to serve you and yours. However, we cannot succeed without your help. Ticket sales cover less than half the cost associated with operating this world-class performing arts venue right in your backyard. As an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we depend on the generosity of individuals like you to bridge that gap. We are grateful for all who help us maintain the Barclay as a cherished place to celebrate life through the arts: our staff and Board of Directors; our public partners—the City of Irvine and UCI; and you, our audience. I especially want to thank our 2019–20 Season Sponsor, UCI Health, and our other generous sponsors, for their enthusiastic support. Together, we make Orange County an even better place to live. Thank you for your patronage and support. We couldn’t do it without you. Official Hotel of Irvine Barclay Theatre:

The
Arts
Impact
Health & Wellness Health and well-being, for individuals and communities, is about being able to flourish and grow. The arts play a strong role, leading to better care, cost savings, and a better quality of life. As our understanding of healing, prevention, and next-generation practices and therapies evolve, it is clear that the arts offer promise in new and surprising ways.
Diversity & Equity The pursuit of equity seeks to improve conditions by addressing systems that can create equal opportunities or all. The arts bridge divides, open dialogues, and create understanding— and all three of those tools are essential in working toward diversity, access, equity, and inclusion.
Education Studies repeatedly show the positive effects on students when the arts are part of a well-rounded education. And learning doesn’t stop just when school does—at our best, humans are ceaselessly curious and constantly learning. The arts are a gateway to endless new ideas for exploration.
Technology & Innovation
Content courtesy of
Arts and technology have always had a symbiotic relationship. Enhancing technological development with principles from creative and design processes drives innovation, and in turn new technologies are adapted and transformed by artists to create new art forms that challenge our world views and provide new ways of interacting with art.

BEAUSOLEIL AVEC MICHAEL DOUCET For the past 45 years, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet has been making some of the most potent and popular Cajun music on the planet. Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members, and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet. BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz, blues rock, folk, swamp pop, zydeco, country and bluegrass, captivating listeners from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans, to Carnegie Hall, then all the way across the pond to Richard Thompson’s Meltdown Festival in England. Earning 11 Grammy nominations throughout the years, BeauSoleil was the first Cajun band to win a Grammy for L’amour Ou La Folie (“Love Or Folly” — Traditional Folk Album, 1998). They won a second Grammy in 2008 for Live at the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album).
Though fascinated by music of all kinds, Michael Doucet is defined by his deep connection with, and dedication to, the music of the sacred French-Cajun culture. A folk arts apprenticeship from the National Endowment of the Arts spurred Doucet to seek out every surviving Cajun musician and learn from them in person; he studied genre fathers including Dewey Balfa, Dennis McGee, Sady Courville, Luderin Darbone, Varise Conner, Canray Fontenot and many others, even inspiring some to return to performing. In 2005, the National Endowment of the Arts again recognized Doucet’s integral involvement with the Cajun world, awarding him the esteemed National Heritage Fellowship, as well as the United States Artists Fellowship in 2007.
Doucet has gained acclaim by developing his own flavor of Cajun music, and he and his band represent many “firsts” for the genre. Early on they focused on the lead and twin fiddle styles of the originals of Acadian folk music over the more popular 1920s adoption of the German diatonic accordion. They performed with the communal integrity characteristic of early Cajun music, choosing to perform unplugged like a group of friends playing together in a Louisiana living room, rather than plugging in. They broke ground as the first band to feature an acoustic guitar as the lead instrument, replacing the lead accordion or steel guitar. They were the first to include the frottoir, the rub board borrowed from Cajun music’s zydeco cousin, and they were the first to feature a female vocalist. All of these innovations were fueled by Doucet’s determination to rejuvenate Cajun and zydeco music, breathing into it a new relevance.
14 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
In 2013, BeauSoleil teamed up with Nashville-based roots music label Compass Records to release their 25th album. The band named the new album From Bamako to Carencro, a title that alludes to the cultural and migratory connection between Bamako, in Mali, West Africa, and Louisiana (symbolized in name by the Lafayette, LA. suburb of Carencro), a connection that draws a sonic bloodline back to BeauSoleil’s roots. On the album’s 11 tracks, the band performs with a resounding authenticity all the while bringing a refreshed playfulness to the genre—the fiddle, flat-picked guitar and accordion carry driving melodies over the two-step and waltz dance beats characteristic of their Cajun and zydeco music, but not without the country, jazz and blues leanings that informed the genre in the 1920s.
“We’ve recorded a lot of albums, yet we always seem to come up with new songs saying things that haven’t been said,” comments bandleader Michael Doucet. “The diversity is really what excites me about this record—it’s nothing like we’ve done before, and the songs are played only as we could play them. And it’s not just your smiling ‘let’s go eat some crawfish,’ Cajun album. We’re getting deeper into the layers in the psyche of the culture. It’s maturation.” The tracks taken from the album title, “Bamako,” a track contributed by the esteemed trombonist Roswell Rudd as a tribute to the people of Mali, and “Carencro,” a story about two French Louisiana lovers with bad timing and murderous intentions, again support Doucet’s message that “it takes all kinds to make a culture’s history survive.” Indeed, the band has achieved that goal and more, furthering the legacy and understanding of this unique American subculture, performing in every state and in 33 countries. “When we first started, we were fortunate to have these great master musicians like Dennis McGee still living. We were able to play with them and hang out with them. Some of them were born before 1900. Now we’re the elders, and that’s scary, as you can imagine,” reflects Doucet. “However, we’re pretty proud of the voice that we’ve produced on this record as far as the watermark. You do what you feel and what you believe in. We pushed the envelope just for the hell of it, and that’s just who we are.” Artist Representation: The Roots Agency David Lloyd david@therootsagency.com www.therootsagency.com

DAVINA AND THE VAGABONDS Davina and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene with their high-energy live shows, level “A” musicianship, sharp-dressed professionalism and Davina Lozier’s commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. In 2011, Davina released her first full-length, all original album, Black Cloud. It was named one of 10 best releases of the year by the Minneapolis Star & Tribune and awarded 4 ½ stars by DownBeat magazine. Their next release in 2014, Sunshine, hit number 13 on the Billboard blues chart and led them to be a musical feature on the hit BBC show, Later with Jools Holland. Davina and the Vagabonds’ shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James,
16 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: Davina is a true original.
Bringing you 100 years of American music and Davina’s originals, which lend themselves to The Great American Songbook, the band brings edgy nostalgia to older generations and fresh new music to younger ears. This rollicking quintet is held together by Davina’s keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago. This has set the Vagabonds apart at festivals in Thunder Bay, Ontario; Sighisoara, Romania; Sierre, Switzerland; Kemi, Finland; as well as the 2012 New Orleans Jazz, the Heritage Festival, and the 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival; Vache de Blues in France; and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. Davina and the Vagabonds’ latest album, Sugar Drops, was released in 2019.
HOT CLUB OF COWTOWN Since forming over two decades ago, Austin, Texas-based hot jazz and Western swing power trio Hot Club of Cowtown has traveled the world bringing its unique brand of magical musical chemistry to audiences far and wide. Violinist Elana James, guitarist Whit Smith and bassist Jake Erwin are equal partners in this original marriage of hot European string jazz, inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli (which accounts for the “Hot Club” portion of their name), and the hoedowns, traditional tunes and Western swing, inspired by the music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys (represented in the “Cowtown” of their name). The band is proud to be a thoroughly modern, vibrant heir to these rich musical traditions, which have often been overlooked by the mainstream and alternative music worlds.
The Hot Club of Cowtown has a long list of accomplishments since releasing its first album, Swingin’ Stampede, in 1998 on Bay-area label HighTone Records. Winners of the Horizon Award from the Western Music Association, the Hot Club of Cowtown members are each individually among the youngest ever to have been inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame. In 2015, the band was named Western Swing Group of the Year at the Ameripolitan Music Awards (a new genre created by Dale Watson to recognize roots-influenced bands), and James won for Western Swing Female that year, as well. The Hot Club of Cowtown has also been honored to represent the U.S. State Department as musical ambassadors over the past several years in places as diverse as Azerbaijan, Algeria, Armenia, the Republic of Georgia and the Sultanate of Oman, and has regularly appeared worldwide at jazz, bluegrass and country music festivals, reflecting its own diverse influences. Highlights include the Cambridge Folk Festival and Glastonbury Festival in the U.K., the National Folk Festival (Australia), The Fuji Rock Festival (Japan), the Winnipeg Folk Festival (CA) and numerous appearances at the National Folk Festival in the United States, as well as regular tours in the U.K.
The Hot Club of Cowtown has also toured extensively domestically, both on its own and with artists including Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Gatemouth Brown, the Avett Brothers, Dan Hicks, Bryan Ferry, Roxy Music, the Squirrell Nut Zippers, the Mavericks, the Dustbowl Revival, and others.
In 2004, the Hot Club of Cowtown gained a special fan in Bob Dylan when they were invited to join Dylan and Willie Nelson on a month-long tour of minor league baseball parks. James sat in with Dylan’s band often on that tour, and the following year was hired to play in Dylan’s touring band—the first dedicated female instrumentalist to join his road band since Scarlet Rivera some 30 years before.
To what does this trio attribute its success in over two decades of touring, recording and playing together? According to James, “It’s like Brokeback Mountain—‘I just can’t quit you!’” she laughs. “Some bands are maybe more studio bands, or other bands are really more about songwriting. We came together as instrumentalists who love to jam and play, and we really are at our very best as a live band. To me, it’s almost as though the instruments have gathered us together to sing and play their music. Like the songs conjure us, and we gather together and deliver them.” The Hot Club of Cowtown released its 11th studio album, Wild Kingdom, in September 2019, as well as a live companion album especially for this tour, also called The Finest Hour, in February 2020. KAHULANUI There is a new wave coming from Hawai’i’, a blend of traditional music and the big band swing brought to The Aloha State by U.S. servicemen during World War II. Its leading exponent is Kahulanui (The Big Dance), a band whose energy and dynamic arrangements have caused a sensation throughout the islands. Kahulanui’s music takes you on a trip back in time when Hawaiian music blended with American jazz, creating a genre known as Hawaiian swing.
Kahulanui is a nine-piece Hawaiian swing band inspired by Robert Kahulanui, the grandfather of Kahulanui band leader, Lolena Naipo Jr. Lolena (Lena) remembers stories of his grandfather, a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band during an era when horns and drums were part of Hawaiian music. Influenced by mid-20th century Hawaiian musicians and songwriters, including Uncle Alvin Kaleolani Isaacs, Ray Kinney, Sam Koki, Lani McIntire and Spike Jones, Hawai’i’s Kings of Swing are bringing their unique style to audiences across America.
Kahulanui’s debut release, Hula Ku’I, was a 2014 Grammy nominee in the Regional Roots category. It was also a 2013 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award finalist (Hawai’i’s version of the Grammy Awards).
In 2017, Kahulanui released Mele Ho’oilina. The album won the 2018 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Best Jazz Album of the Year and Best Original Instrumental Composition.
Kahulanui has graced many stages, including the Lincoln Center in New York City, The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C and many other notable festivals and performing arts theaters across the U.S. and Hawai’i’. KARLA BONOFF AND LIVINGSTON TAYLOR March 14, 2020 | Cheng Hall This performance will include a 15-minute intermission.
KARLA BONOFF Karla Bonoff has been described as one of the finest singer/songwriters of her generation.
Born and raised in Southern California, Karla Bonoff was a songwriter by the age of fifteen. She released her debut album in 1977, titled Karla Bonoff. Her other albums include Restless Nights (1979), Wild Heart of the Young (1982), New World (1988) and All My Life — The Best of Karla Bonoff (a 16-song fully remastered collection spanning Karla’s career) in 1999.
Bonoff has enjoyed critical acclaim, commercial success, enduring popularity and the unwavering respect of her peers. Karla has seen her songs become hits for Bonnie Raitt, Wynonna Judd and Linda Ronstadt. Many of Bonoff’s ballads are classics. Bonoff’s first live album was released in September 2007. This double CD includes many of her best-known songs performed live in concert on October 24, 2004, in Santa Barbara, California (except for one song recorded on July 30, 2005, in Japan).
IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE | 23
Bonoff was also a member of the group Bryndle, which included Wendy Waldman and Kenny Edwards (who also produced Bonoff’s first three albums). The band also included Andrew Gold until he left in 1996. The group first formed in the late 1960s, but did not release any albums until 20 years later with two studio albums and a live album between 1995 and 2002.
In 2019, Karla released her first new album in over a decade, Carry Me Home, a 16-song set featuring brand new recordings of Karla’s classics along with new songs by Karla, Kenny Edwards and a cover of a vintage Jackson Browne tune, “Something Fine,” which Karla performed on the 2015 compilation, Looking into You: A Tribute To Jackson Browne. The year 2019 has seen a major resurgence and interest in Karla and her music. She was featured in the acclaimed Linda Ronstadt documentary: The Sound of My Voice, highlighting her friendship with Linda and as the writer of several of her biggest songs, including the Grammy winner, “All My Life.” Bob Lefsetz, a longtime fan, interviewed her for his popular podcast and dug deep into her history as a pioneer of the Southern California singer-songwriter scene. Trisha Yearwood’s new album includes a lovely rendition of Karla’s “Home.” Karla has continued to tour extensively, playing sold-out shows around the world.
LIVINGSTON TAYLOR
Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of 13. Thus began a 50-year career that has encompassed performance, songwriting and teaching. Born in Boston and raised in North Carolina, Livingston is the fourth child in a very musical family that includes Alex, James, Kate and Hugh. Livingston recorded his first record at the age of 18 and has continued to create well-crafted, introspective and original songs that have earned him listeners worldwide.
From top-40 hits, “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running” to “I Can Dream of You” and “Boatman,” the last two recorded by his brother James, Livingston’s creative output has continued unabated. His musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire, and he is equally at home with a range of musical genres.
Livingston has never stopped performing since those early coffeehouse days. He has shared the stage with major artists, including Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Buffett and Jethro Tull. He maintains a busy concert schedule, touring internationally, and is a natural performer, peppering his shows with personal stories, anecdotes and ineffable warmth that connect him to his fans. His relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge, and fans might just as often be treated to a classic Gershwin or something from the best of Broadway. 24 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
Livingston is a full professor at Berklee College of Music, where he has taught a stage performance course since 1989. He teaches young artists invaluable lessons learned over the course of an extensive career on the road; the course is consistently voted the most popular at the College. His book, Stage Performance, released in 2011, offers those lessons to anyone who is interested in elevating his or her presentation standards to professional standards.
Livingston’s 50th year of making music was celebrated by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, both declaring January 18, 2017 “Livingston Taylor Day.” A documentary film entitled Livingston Taylor: Life is Good was released in 2018 at national and international film festivals. It has garnered many awards, nominations and accolades, including The Van Gogh Award in the Feature Documentary category at the Amsterdam International Film Festival. The film is currently available to the public on Amazon. In February 2019, Livingston released The Best of LIVE — 50 Years of Livingston Taylor Live. Upon release, the album was ranked in the top 10 and his song, “Good Friends,” was No. 2 on the folk DJ chart. In March 2019, the American Public Television special, Livingston Taylor Live from Sellersville: Songs and Stories, began broadcasting on PBS stations across the country.
LIVE—50 Years of Livingston Taylor Live box set was released in July of 2019. The project features a collection of 87 live recordings on 4 discs from 19=== 69 through 2016. It also includes the documentary film Livingston Taylor: Life is Good and a 54-page commemorative photo book with notes and stories from Livingston. NOA With roots and upbringing spanning across Yemen, Israel and the United States, Achinoam Nini a.k.a. Noa, is Israel’s most highly acclaimed international singer, songwriter, percussionist, speaker and activist. Together with her longstanding musical collaborator Gil Dor, accomplished musician and cofounder of the Rimon School of Music, Noa has released 16 critically acclaimed albums, performed hundreds of concerts the world over, graced some of the most important and prestigious stages, including Carnegie Hall and the White House, and has performed for three Popes. She has been mentored by Pat Metheny and Quincy Jones, and has shared the stage with a long list of international musical icons, including Stevie Wonder, Andrea Bocelli and Sting.
In addition to her prolific musical activity, Noa is considered Israel’s most prominent cultural advocate of dialogue and co-existence with her “voice of peace.” Noa was the only major artist to agree to perform in the fateful peace rally where Yitzchak Rabin was murdered, a shattering event that changed her life. She was the first Jew to perform in the Vatican for an audience of millions, singing her own lyrics to Bach/Gounod’s “Ave Maria,” a song that has become an intrinsic part of her career and mission: building bridges and breaking walls between cultures and religions. Among the endless activities that she has been involved in to help foster peace and dialogue, her historic participation in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest stands out, representing Israel together with Israeli-Palestinian artist Mira Awad with their original song “There Must Be Another Way” in English, Hebrew and Arabic. Among her many awards are Commander of Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (one of Italy’s highest honors), Pilgrim of Peace from the Franciscan Order in Assisi (awarded in the past to Bill Gates and Mother Theresa), and the Christal Award from the World Economic Forum. Noa is Israel’s first ambassador to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and is an active board member and public advocate of a score of human rights and peace organizations in both Israel and abroad.
Noa is married to her childhood sweetheart, Dr. Asher Barak. Together they have three children, Ayehli, Enea and Yum.

GIL DOR Gil Dor is Noa’s musical and artistic director as well as co-writer, arranger, producer and guitarist. Born in Israel in 1952, Gil studied classical guitar, served in the Israeli army as a musician in the entertainment unit, and continued his studies in the United States, concentrating on jazz at the Berklee College in Boston and then on classical theory and composition at Queens College in New York.
Upon returning to Israel in 1981, Gil established himself as a guitarist as well as an arranger/composer performing live jazz and rock, and recording with leading artists in Israel. During 1983 and 1984, he taught jazz improvisation and guitar at the Jerusalem Academy of Music. In 1985, Gil co-founded the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Ramat Hasharon, Israel. In his capacity as Rimon’s academic director for 5 years, Gil developed and wrote many core curricula as well as advanced courses. He has performed in jazz festivals in Israel and Europe with his own ensembles, and together with Al Di Meola. Since 1990, he has been working exclusively with Noa.
OR LUBIANIKER Or Lubianiker is an Israeli bass player, producer and teacher. Born in 1988 in central Israel, Or started studying music around the age of 6 and switched multiple instruments until landing on bass around age 17. His musical background is mainly composed of gigging and touring with artists both locally and internationally. Over the past 10 years, Or has taken part in various musical groups, playing in a variety of genres—from accompanying some of the world’s top guitar players to original music and countless video releases.
