WELCOME It’s not the easiest way to run a business, but it’s hugely rewarding. After all, the mission of the Barclay is to feel like a home rather than just an auditorium.

Douglas C. Rankin President Irvine Barclay Theatre

At a recent gathering of Irvine Barclay Theatre supporters, I made some remarks about how we go about programming and why, and was surprised by how the remarks resonated with the assembled guests. With the launch of the theatre’s 25th season and the printing of this, the second program book of the season, I thought it would be as good a time as any to share them. Apparently, my comments that connected the most were those that described how the Barclay appeals to the whole of the community by serving its parts, by identifying creative niches, cultural communities, genres within dance, music, theater, spoken work, circus, contemporary and traditional, cutting-edge, or simply entertaining. Commercially speaking, the Barclay and its Cheng Hall are too small at 750 seats to compete for a mass market. And yet, with its beautiful hall and great stage (and reputation after 24 seasons), the Barclay is capable of reaching out to diverse artists and audiences – brilliant artists, performers, and programs as well as community and university organizations of every description – and to slivers and segments of audiences determined by interest, taste or cultural background, by youth or age – and sew together what is a dynamic community.

Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where, despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day. Storm spent the 90s singing in clubs throughout San Francisco. Tired of the club scene, she moved to Portland to pursue a new career as a chef, but a last minute cancellation in 2002 at Dante’s, a rock club in Portland, turned into a standing Wednesday night engagement for Storm and her new band, The Balls. It wasn’t long before Storm had a cult-like following in Portland, and a renewed singing career that was about to be launched onto the international stage. Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally; and was featured on their CD, Get Happy. Storm has also sung with Grammy winner k.d. lang, pianist Kirill Gerstein, punk rocker John Doe, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton. She debuted with the Oregon Symphony in 2010, and has returned for sold out performances each year thereafter. Storm made her Carnegie Hall debut in May 2013, singing Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Detroit Symphony as part of

the Spring for Music festival. The New York Times called her “sensational,” and the classical music world instantly had a new star. In 2007, she took a career departure and starred in Portland Center Stage’s production of Cabaret with Wade McCollum. The show was a smash hit, earning Large glowing reviews. Her next endeavor, the autobiographical musical memoir, Crazy Enough, played to packed houses in 2009 during its unprecedented 21-week sold out run in Portland. Storm went on to perform a cabaret version of the show to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival in Australia, and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir, Crazy Enough, was released by Simon and Schuster in 2012. It was named Oprah’s Book of the Week and was awarded the 2013 Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. Storm is featured in Rid of Me, a film by Portlander James Westby, starring Katie O’Grady and Theresa Russell. In November and December of 2010, she starred at the Mark Taper Forum with Katey Sagal and Michael McKean in Jerry Zak’s production of Harps and Angels, a musical featuring the work of Randy Newman. In the 2013/14 season, Storm and her band, Le Bonheur, performed in many new cities around the country, including Las Vegas, Boston and Minneapolis in an evening called Taken By Storm. In June 2014, she appeared at the Ojai Festival with the exciting new orchestra, The Knights and the vocal ensemble Hudson Shad. Later in the summer, she debuted at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. On October 7, 2014, Storm and Le Bonheur released a record designed to capture their sublime and subversive interpretations of the Great American Songbook. Entitled simply, Le Bonheur, and released on Pink Martini’s Heinz Records, the recording is a collection of tortured and titillating love songs; beautiful, familiar, yet twisted...much like the lady herself. Storm and her band have hit the road in support of this new release. Storm will also make her debut with The New York Pops orchestra at Carnegie Hall, The Cincinnati Symphony, The Houston Symphony and The RTE Concert Orchestra in Dublin, amongst others. Storm is also busy creating a new musical with The Public Theater in New York City. LE BONHEUR James Beaton (Piano). A native of Bronx, N.Y, James is a composer, music director, and pianist living in Portland, Oregon. After graduating from The Evergreen State College, he toured and recorded extensively with the rock band, Everclear, before co-founding the notorious cabaret band, The Balls. He has collaborated with Storm Large for the past decade; and was the composer and music director of her one woman show, Crazy Enough, which debuted at Portland Center Stage in 2009 with further productions in Australia and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Since 2010, they have annually premiered new works with the Oregon Symphony, and their new musical, The Everleigh Club, is being developed at The Public Theater. In 2014, James was the music director for Lizzie, the Lizzie Borden rock musical, at Portland Center Stage.

Matt Brown (Electric Bass). An Oregon native, multiinstrumentalist Matt Brown currently plays with Storm Large, Redray Frazier, Sarah Gwen and Miss Michael Jodell. Most recently, Matt has been a member of She & Him, The Motels, Casey Neill and the Norway Rats, Mike Coykendall and the Golden Shag, and The Baseboard Heaters, among others. Matt currently operates a recording studio called EchoTone in Portland. Greg Eklund (Drums) has been playing drums with Storm Large for five years, starting with recording the soundtrack to her one woman show, Crazy Enough, in 2009. Previously the drummer for the rock band, Everclear (Capitol Records, 1994-2003), as well as the multi- instrumentalist/singersongwriter for The Oohlas (Island Def Jam Music Group).

Scott Weddle (Guitar) is a native of Montana and a graduate of Lewis and Clark College. He was a guitarist and contributing songwriter for the Portland Americana band, The Flatirons, prior to forming the cabaret-pop group, Amelia. Scott played drums in the Portland Center Stage production of Storm Large’s Crazy Enough in 2009 and is currently the guitarist in Storm’s band, Le Bonheur. He also plays guitar for the acclaimed Portland singer/songwriter Sarah Gwen.

WRITER’S NOTES “That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.” – Aldous Huxley (1959)

I’m a storyteller, not a historian. Historical facts only interest me inasmuch as they help tell a story, for stories are how we learn from our mistakes – and from each other. BOOM is a collage of stories that I’ve been documenting about the generation that immediately preceded me: stories of the famous and the not-so-famous; stories of the living and the no-longer-living. Each story in itself might be worthy of a full play, but in this case, I’ve chosen to paint them into a larger picture. My hope is that by spiraling through 25 tumultuous years (1945 to 1969), we can all gain perspective not only on who we were, but who we are now and where we’re going. Think of BOOM as a living, breathing time capsule. It starts with a ‘boom,’ it ends with a ‘boom.’ I hope it stirs up your own stories, so that we can share them together in the lobby after the show. Explosively yours, Rick Miller

Olivier Bourque (Stage & Production Manager) received his degree in stage and technical management in 2009 and was given the opportunity to work at the heart of Ex Machina, Robert Lepage’s production company. His first years there were spent as the head stage technician for operas and large-scale touring productions. In 2012, a first occasion arose in which he could combine his passion for work and travel: he began to tour the U.S. with Lepage’s acclaimed Andersen Project. Since then, his taste for “the road” has only multiplied. He began working as a stage manager and technical director on smaller projects, notably with Québécois youth-theatre companies, touring eastern Canada. Always on the hunt for new challenges, Olivier later joined Rick Miller’s BOOM team as the stage and production manager – no small feat, given the show’s technical complexity.

Ravi Jain (Directing Consultant) is an award-winning actor, director and artistic director of Why Not Theatre, a Toronto- based company with whom he has produced and created over 18 productions, which have played in over 20 cities around the world. Acting credits include the Dora Award-winning SPENT and A Brimful of Asha. His company was in residence at The Theatre Centre when he developed I’m So Close (winner of the Spotlight Award at SummerWorks 2009). He has assisted notable directors: Daniel Brooks, Richard Rose and Jennifer Tarver. Ravi directed Nicolas Billon’s triptych of plays (Greenland, Iceland and Faroe Islands) entitled Fault Lines, which was awarded the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama in 2013. In 2011, Ravi was a member of the DiverseCity Fellows program, which aims to diversify leadership across sectors in Toronto. Ravi is on the programming committee 8 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

He was awarded the 2012 Pauline McGibbon Award; is a resident artist at Soulpepper Theatre Company; and was the inaugural artistic directorin- residence at The Theatre Centre. He was selected to be part of the roster of clowns for Cirque Du Soleil. PRODUCTION HISTORY Originally commissioned by the Stratford Festival in 2011, BOOM is produced by WYRD Productions and KDOONS. The show was developed from 2012 to 2014 in a series of workshops at Ex Machina’s La Caserne in Quebec City. A January 2014 work-in-progress run was presented by Theatre Calgary in association with the High Performance Rodeo. Over the course of 2014, several U.S. cities hosted the touring version of the show, including Tulsa OK (Tulsa PAC) and Mt. Vernon WA (McIntyre Hall). Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine, CA hosted the official U.S. premiere on November 29, 2014. Toronto’s Mirvish Productions is presenting the Canadian premiere of BOOM at the Panasonic Theatre on January 15, 2015.
