2 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
WELCOME Thank you for coming to experience Icaro, a wonderful piece of theater created, directed and acted by Daniele Finzi Pasca. The Barclay considers him an old friend because of his previous work here, including the premiere in Irvine of Rain, an innovative circus/theater production that went on to become an international hit for six years running. We’re honored to present the U.S. premiere of one of this prominent artist’s seminal works during this, the theatre’s 25th season. During the 24 seasons leading up to this milestone year, the City of Irvine, whose residents taxed themselves to build this performance space and have supported it ever since, has grown into a powerful economic engine and diverse residential environment. Parallel to the growth of the city, the University of California, Irvine, which partnered with the 2.3-acre parcel of land and has also provided additional annual operating support, is now a top-ranked public university. I’m proud to be the executive of the theatre’s nonprofit operating company, a great organizational invention dating back to 1986. It is a public/private partnership, whose volunteer and professional leadership and staff, with the participation of the city and university, have
pooled resources and energies to achieve mutual goals on behalf of the larger community. The partnership has made the clock tick and chime. Now as then, the theatre presents an international array of diverse and top quality artists and entertainers. It also provides a facility with extraordinary amenities and capabilities to community, regional and educational cultural organizations. It hosts UCI-sponsored activities which are as likely to be a visit by the Dali Lama as a student symphony concert, or a lecture on brain function by a distinguished scientist. It is decades of enthusiasm and support – from citizens and their public institutions; individual patrons, companies and foundations; artists and members of the creative community; attendees and participants from the general public and university community – that have brought the Barclay to the threshold of its 25th season. How do we thank you all?

Daniele and Icaro “Icaro was quickly created and rehearsed for two months. Since then, it has been refined over and over again. It is a simple show, much like the stories my grandmother used to tell me. She taught me the secret to making gnocchi and apple pie; precious recipes which I subsequently applied to my theatrical productions. Preparing a meal is a pretext for meeting the world. My grandmother, who never left her kitchen, discovered the world by inviting her family to come and dine. I prepare my shows like stories that must be told while looking the audience in the eye. In Icaro, I wanted to talk about hope by bringing to life antiheroes, which is how most of us see ourselves. I engage in theatre for the pleasure of drowning myself, of losing myself just a little, which is one of the most worthwhile things in this life. We lose ourselves and escape. When we escape inside ourselves, who we really are is revealed to us. Escape is a strategy that allows us to delve deeper into reality to discover the secrets that are masked by appearances, and to invent new utopias. I come from a mountainous land. Where I am from, we escape by taking risks. Mountains will await you throughout your entire life. They define the vertical horizon of the child’s imagination before becoming engraved in memory. Where I am from, there are people who climb their mountain every year so as to renew their ties with that which does not change. Governments change, children are born, we lose our oldest friends, but mountains remain forever, unchanged. The wonderful thing about an encounter outside of time is that on every such occasion, we discover that we are different, transformed. A performance for an actor is sometimes one of the places where he can escape within himself. He will continue to tell these stories, and each time he does, he will find that he has changed. Icaro is one of the mountains I have been climbing for the past twenty years. Through theater, I strive to rain in the eyes of others; a moist massage for the soul. I will tell you my story in English but I will continue to think in Italian, my first language. This evening, I hope to succeed in making the rain fall in your eyes.” - Daniele Finzi Pasca
About Icaro Icaro made its debut in 1991 in Milan, Italy. Daniele Finzi Pasca wrote Icaro while he was in prison, serving a short sentence for conscientious objection. Icaro was conceived for a single spectator. At each performance, there is only one single privileged member of the audience completely involved in the play. The rest of the audience find themselves in the position of voyeurs. Icaro is part of a trilogy dealing with “escape” that also includes Dialoghi col sonno and Arianna. Daniele has performed Icaro more than 700 times in Italian, as well as in French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and English in Switzerland, Spain, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Russia, Georgia, Uruguay,
Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, Paraguay, Panama, Costa Rica, Canada, USA and Chile.
Daniele Finzi Pasca Daniele Finzi Pasca was born in Lugano, Switzerland in 1964. Director, author, choreographer, light designer and clown, he was born into a family of photographers and grew up in his father’s darkroom, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and greatgrandfather. Daniele’s introduction to the circus world came through gymnastics; later, under the guidance of a clown named Fery, he set foot on
stage for the first time. In 1983, he moved to India, where he worked as a volunteer looking after the sick. Upon his return to Switzerland, together with his brother Marco and Maria Bonzanigo, he founded Teatro Sunil, a company that developed a style integrating clowning, acrobatics, acting and dance. The founders call this theatre technique “Teatro della Carezza” (Theatre of the Caress). Daniele Finzi Pasca was sentenced to a short stay in prison for acting as a conscientious objector, and during that time, he put the finishing touches on his trilogy dedicated to “escape.” One part of this trilogy was Icaro, a monologue imagined for a single spectator. Icaro made its debut in 1991 in Milan, Italy. Performed by Finzi Pasca, over 700 times in six different languages over the past 20 years, Icaro has delighted audiences throughout the world. This “benchmark” show would come to define the essence of style and elegance that is Teatro Sunil. The years that followed saw Daniele create and direct 20 shows for Teatro Sunil. His projects have been seen in more than 20 countries and are marked by a profound sense of humanity and playfulness. They include: Rituale, Viaggio al Confine, Dialoghi col Sonno, Percossi Obbligati, Giacobbe, 1337, Aitestás and Visitatio (a production of Teatro Sunil and Carbone 14 of Montréal). In 2003, he wrote and directed Te Amo, produced by Poramor Producciones and Teatro Sunil. For Cirque Éloize (co-founded by his wife, Julie Hamelin Finzi), Daniele created Nomade – At Night, the Sky is Endless (2002); and Rain – Comme une pluie dans tes yeux (2003). For the latter, Daniele was nominated for best director at the Drama Desk Awards in New York. In 2005, he wrote and directed Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo, which has been seen by over three million spectators throughout the world. Daniele was also commissioned to devise and direct the closing ceremony of the 2006 Torino Winter Olympic Games, a production for which he received the 2006 Swiss Award in the “show business” category. In 2007, he wrote Nebbia, co-produced by Cirque Éloize and Teatro Sunil. Additionally, Casagrande has published his collection of short stories entitled Come Acqua allo specchio, as well as the complete script of Viaggio al Confine. In 2008, he received the Swiss Theatre Award in

recognition of all his work; and was nominated for the XIII Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities. In 2009, Daniele co-founded Inlevitas with Julie Hamelin, a production company created to foster a range of new artistic projects, including opera, acrobatic theatre and film. Invelitas’ first project was the opera L’Amour de loin (Love from Afar), staged in July 2009 for the English National Opera; and later staged in Belgium at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp; and in Toronto in 2012 at the Four Seasons Centre. Julie and Daniele also edited the book, Daniele Finzi Pasca: Theatre of the Caress, written by Facundo Ponce de León in 2009. In 2010, the Moscow International Chekhov Theatre Festival commissioned Daniele to stage Donka – A Letter to Chekhov. The show is a production of Compagnia Finzi Pasca and the Chekhov International Theater Festival in co-production with Théâtre Vidy – Lausanne. It was written and directed by Daniele for the 150th anniversary of Russian author Anton Chekhov. Julie Hamelin acted as creative associate on this project. In 2011, Daniele co-founded Compagnia Finzi Pasca, a company that unites the stories of Teatro Sunil and Inlevitas. Additionally, the year 2011 was an important year in terms of opera productions, with the completion of several projects initiated by Julie Hamelin. In June 2011, Daniele directed Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida, which was conducted by Maestro Valery Gergiev at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. In July, this time in Naples, Daniele directed Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, 6 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

conducted by Maestro Donato Renzetti at Teatro San Carlo. Pagliacci was presented at the Mariinsky in October 2011; and in June 2012, Daniele returned to the Mariinsky to direct Verdi’s Requiem, with Maestro Valery Gergiev conducting again. In October 2012, Daniele was awarded the 2012 Hans Reinhart Ring, the highest distinction in Swiss theatre, in recognition of his lifelong contribution to the performing arts. That same year, Daniele created La Verità, which premiered in Montréal in January 2013, and is currently touring throughout the world. In 2014, Daniele devised and directed the closing ceremony and the opening ceremony of Paralympics for the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Among his many different projects, Daniele is still performing Icaro throughout the world. Other creations are underway: He is currently working on his first movie, Piazza San Michele, produced by Julie Hamelin; and Bianco su Bianco, a new theatrical clown show is scheduled to debut in Switzerland in 2014. Daniel is also scheduled to create and direct the next edition of the Vevey Wine Growers Festival in Switzerland, a celebration that takes place about every 20-25 years and gathers hundreds of thousands of people. THANK YOU to tonight’s “producers” Last season, Barclay supporters like you added donations to their ticket purchases, most falling in the $1 to $25 range, but with many up to $100. These hundreds of seemingly small gifts totaled over $10,000 – enough to underwrite an entire performance! Tonight we’d like to recognize the following supporters as “producers” of this very special U.S. premiere of Daniele Finzi Pasca’s ICARO. We thank the generous individuals listed below for their contributions and remind all our patrons that every dollar really does count!

1990-2015 In 1974, Irvine voters approved the first of two bond issues to support the construction of a community performing arts facility. It was finally a partnership of the City of Irvine, the University of California, Irvine, and the volunteer leadership and professional staff of the nonprofit Irvine Barclay Theatre Operating Company that refined the vision and got the job done. The city led the construction; the university provided the land; the theatre’s operating company augmented public support with millions of dollars of private contributions including major gifts from the Barclay family, the Cheng family and The Irvine Company.
