“These Valentine’s Day concerts mark the 18th year that we have been blessed with the privilege of performing at Irvine Barclay Theatre. We are so grateful to Mrs. Elizabeth Steele and her daughter Trisha Steele for supporting Hawaiian music, culture and arts. There’s a beautiful Hawaiian proverb that not only fits the sentiments we share on this Valentine’s Day, but also expresses our gratitude for the enduring support of the Steele Family: ‘E lei kau, e lei ho’oilo i ke aloha. Love is worn like a lei through the Summers and the Winters, for love is everlasting.’” — Barry Flanagan of HAPA

Barry Flanagan Barry Flanagan is an American singersongwriter and musician and founder of the acclaimed and award-winning world music group HAPA. Flanagan is known for his guitar-playing skills, vocal performances and ocean awareness projects. Born in New York City and raised in Bergen County, New Jersey, Flanagan came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1980 to study and explore the art of Kiho Alu, or slack-key guitar, and Haku Mele, Hawaiian poetic song composing. Flanagan heard the recordings of Ry Cooder and Hawaiian slack-key icon Gabby Pahinui while living in Colorado, which inspired Flanagan’s first visit and eventual move to Hawai’i. Flanagan immersed himself in Hawaiian culture and art, seeking out native speakers, teachers and composers of Hawaiian poetry along with legendary Hawaiian slack key players, passionately studying all the indigenous art forms with Hawai’i as the backdrop. An “eternal wellspring of inspiration for artists and writers from around the globe” is how Flanagan describes Hawai’i. A prolific composer and performer, and one of Hawai’i’s most respected and celebrated recording artists and producers, Barry Flanagan has composed some of Hawai’i’s popular songs of the last three decades. In 1994, the Hawai’i Academy of Recording Arts honored Flanagan and Hawaiian language professor S.H. Kiope Raymond with the prestigious Haku Mele Award, an acknowledgement for Excellence in the Art of Song Composition in the native Hawaiian language. In 2004, Flanagan co-composed a song with friend Kenny Loggins for his Grammy-nominated More Songs from Pooh Corner release. The song, entitled “Hana Aluna Lullaby” includes a chorus in the Hawaiian language, making this the first song utilizing Hawaiian lyrics to receive that distinction. IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE | 5

Kapono Nā‘ili’ili Kapono Nā‘ili’ili, known for his beautiful vocals as well as his mastery of a multitude of instruments, released Ala Iki, his long-anticipated debut solo album, on February 27, 2014. Containing a blend of classics (“Sanoe,” by Queen Liliʻuokalani), favorites (“Beautiful Kauaʻi” by Rudolph “Randy” Haleakala Farden) and songs by beloved composers such as Johnny Almeida, Kainani Kahaunaele, Charles E. King, and Lena Machado, listeners will be enchanted by both Nāʻiliʻiliʻs fresh interpretation and his masterful delivery. His performance on lead vocals as well as lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, and percussion demonstrates the reason he’s in high demand by other musicians to perform with them live and to contribute his skills to their recording projects. His extensive experience in both the Hawaiian and contemporary music scenes contributed to Nāʻiliʻiliʻs desire to create music that reflects himself and his influences. A graduate of the University of Hawai’i with a B.A. in Hawaiian Language, he uses those language skills on most of the album’s vocals, and also gives listeners several glimpses into the reason he won Maui’s 2007 Falsetto Contest. He is equally as comfortable playing R&B, jazz, soul, gospel, and pop as he is with traditional and contemporary Hawaiian, and listeners will find his arrangements influenced by his love of those genres. Nāʻiliʻiliʻs musical background includes a stint as the lead guitarist in the quintet for the Hawaii Calls concert at the Hawaii Theatre in 2008; formation of a band called The K.N. Orchestra, specializing in R&B, soul, jazz, and Top 40 that same year; and in 2009, the formation of a four-piece band called Kekauoha the Jazz Project with Halehaku Seabury of Nā Hoa, Loane Burns of Nā Palapalai, and Ikaika Tecson. The band specializes in traditional Hawaiian songs set to jazz arrangements. He is also the lead vocalist for the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning band Pali. Ala Iki contains 12 tracks and was produced by Nāʻiliʻili and the multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning Dave Tucciarone (who also engineered the album). It was recorded primarily at Tucciarone’s Seventh Wave Productions studio (two tracks were recorded by Matthew Honda at Matt Honda Studio). Guest musicians include Rockford Holmes (clarinet); Kamakoa Lindsey-Asing (ʻukulele and upright bass); Casey Olsen (steel guitar); and Bryan Tolentino (ʻukulele). Zachary Lum sings backup vocals. Tarvine Makia Tarvin Edwin Lono Makia was born and raised in Hau`ula on the North Shore of O`ahu. His introduction to music started at the tender age of five, playing the ukulele. He attended Kahuku High School while playing music on the weekends. After graduating from high school, he turned down a football college scholarship to pursue his love for music by accepting an offer to perform in a Polynesian Revue in Japan for several months. This would be the start of his music career. 6 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Upon his return from Japan, he formed a group called Da Guys and performed with Braddah Iz and his brother Skippy before they formed the popular group, The Makaha Sons of Ni`ihau. He also had the great pleasure of sharing the stage with Gabby “Pops” Pahinui. A few years later, he formed another group called Hau`ula and performed mainly in Hawai`i. They recorded their first record and penned the popular song, “E Ku`u Pua.” Along with the influence of Braddah Iz and Gabby Pahinui, he was also inspired by the music of the Hui Ohana, Sunday Manoa, Gabe Kila, the Nanakuli Sons, Olomana, C & K and Kalapana, just to name a few. Three years ago, Tarvin joined the group HAPA and has had the privilege of traveling and performing with them all over the U.S. mainland, Japan and Canada. Radasha Ho`ohuli Radasha Ho`ohuli, Miss Hawai’i USA 2006, is from Nanakuli, O’ahu and is a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools. With guidance from late Kumu Hula, O’brian Eselu and training with his halau, Ke Kai O Kahiki, Radasha was a featured soloist at Paradise Cove Luau for nearly 10 years. She continues to be a premier soloist in Hawai’i and abroad. Radasha obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Communication degree from Hawai’i Pacific University and went on to hold different managerial positions with the Ko Olina Resort & Marina. Radasha is a flight attendant for Hawaiian Airlines and also dances at Halekulani’s House Without a Key every Tuesday and Wednesday. Radasha is dedicated to community service and has volunteered with the Salvation Army, Pilot Club, Angel Tree, Prevent Child Abuse, Waianae Boys & Girls Club, and Read Aloud America. She attributes her humble upbringing and commitment to volunteering as helping her to win the title of Miss Hawaii USA 2006. Radasha is featured in local, national and international magazines, commercials, and productions and continues to support local charities and organizations. KUANA TORRES KAHELE March 14, 2015 | Cheng Hall There will be a 15-minute intermission. Sponsored by: Elizabeth R. Steele Trisha Steele

Kuana Torres Kahele Kuana has been involved in the music and hula scene of Hilo since he was six years old. He trained as a kane dancer under legendary Hilo Kumu Hula, Johnny Lum Ho until the age of 13. Once he was discovered to have exceptional musical abilities, he was pulled from the hula line and added as a permanent halau (group) musician. Kuana’s photographic musical memory allowed the kumu (teacher) to compose songs and have them recited later, as needed. It became a Hawaiian music boot camp of sorts, training him in the classics of Hawaiian music and prepping him for what was to come as a professional musician. In 1995, at 17, he and fellow Hilo native and falsetto musician, Kehau Tamure, laid the foundation for what emerged as one of the most popular Hawaiian music groups to date, Na Palapalai. They released Makani ‘Olu’ol in 2002 to rave reviews. To this day, Kuana’s original, “Ke Anu O Waimea” is still the most popular hula song in Japan. Na Palapalai has continued to

maintain its popularity 20 years and six albums later. In 2011, Kuana released his long awaited solo debut, Kaunaloa. It won every major award at that year’s Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards (Hawaiian Grammy), including Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Kuana was applauded for his songwriting abilities and contribution to Hawaiian music. His release was a welcome breath of fresh air in both style and content. Subsequent blockbuster releases include his Hilo for the Holidays Christmas release, which won Christmas Album of the Year and 2013’s self-titled, Kahele. In 2012, Kuana was asked to teach hula to a small group of Ni’ihauan women, based on mele (song) he had written for the island. It has since blossomed into monthly visits for hula with Kuana teaching an official organized Ni’ihau halau, “Na Lei Lanakila O Ni’ihau.” He has had a long-standing relationship with the Ni’ihau ohana (family) and has worked hard to raise visibility and revenue for their Lei Pupu or shell lei. He takes lei for sale on many of his trips, bringing 100% back to the lei maker. His passion and support have furthered the art and benefitted countless families in need of assistance. Kuana currently maintains his own Hawaiian Music & Culture School in Japan, teaching over 200 students in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. He offers courses in voice, haku mele, mele hula, fresh lei making, ukulele and guitar. He is one of the most popular entertainers performing in Hawai’i and Japan. Kauna performs and teaches cultural workshops all over the world. The year 2014 marked the birth of a 6 CD series from Kuana Torres Kahele entitled, Music for the Hawaiian Islands. The year saw the first two installments with Vol. 1 Hawai’i Keawe and Vol. 2 Kahelelani Niihau. Each CD pays tribute to an individual island with original music from Kuana, written specifically for hula. His poetry-laden lyrics illustrate the beauty of Hawai’i while documenting everything from important place names to island winds and specific rains. The legacy left by this collection will continue to prove its value for years to come as an inspiration for hula and as a passionate documentation of all that we love about Hawai’i. By 2016, Kuana will have completed this momentous project, contributing almost 100 new songs for hula, in honor of Hawai’i. Artists Representation Mark Turner Kuana Music/ Na Palapalai Music

MARK YAMANAKA April 18, 2015 | Cheng Hall There will be a 15-minute intermission. Sponsored by: Elizabeth R. Steele Trisha Steele

Mark Yamanaka Born in Mililani, O‘ahu, but raised from a young age in the rainy town of Hilo, Hawai‘i, Mark Yamanaka never imagined that his life would take a musical route. But at Hilo Intermediate School in 1992, Mark Yamanaka picked up his first ukulele and from that point on, his life would never be the same. He went on to teach himself guitar and discovered within him a clear and soaring falsetto voice that belied his Asian features. While Mark is the first member of his family to turn his passion for music into a career, vocal talents run deep in his family, dating back several generations to his greatgrandmother who sang often in church. Although Hawaiian blood does not run through his veins, Mark considers himself an ‘iwi, or native son, and strongly identifies with culture and music of the only home he knows, Hawai‘i. Mark’s sincere dedication to

the preservation of Hawaiian music and culture was recognized by well-known Kumu Hula, Johnny Lum Ho, under whom Mark began his tutelage in 1997. People around the world were first introduced to Mark Yamanaka when he released his debut album, Lei Pua Kenikeni, in 2010. Music lovers were charmed by his soaring falsetto voice and his pure, natural talent. The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts members awarded him a staggering four Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards (Hawai’i’s equivalent of the Grammy) for his first CD release: Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year for “Kaleoonalani,” and Most Promising Artist of the Year. In November 2013, Mark released his long-awaited sophomore CD, Lei Maile. He carefully assembled an eclectic variety of songs for this project, which showcase his versatility and prowess as a vocalist and musician. This sophomore album includes five original songs, three of which were penned by one of Mark’s mentors, Uncle Johnny Lum Ho. Mark co-wrote the title track, “Lei Maile,” and also composed a delightful tune, “Maui Under Moonlight.” This collection of songs also includes old favorites that haven’t been heard in years like “Beauty,” “Be Still ‘Oe,” “Ku‘u Milimili,” and Aunty Alice Namakelua’s “Hanohano No ‘O Hawai‘i.” Timeless classics like “Danny Boy” and “Kanaka Waiwai” are rounded out by a surprising but fitting choice, the Carpenter’s well-known tune, “Yesterday Once More,” featuring the beautiful vocals of Lehua Kalima. Lei Maile was nominated in 10 categories at the 2014 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. It garnered five awards: Best Liner Notes, Single of the Year (“Maui Under Moonlight”), Male Vocalist of the Year, Hawaiian Album of the Year, and Album of the Year. Music is an expression of the heart for this fresh, young talent; an occupation that requires strength and courage to pursue, both of which he credits his son Jorden and daughter Ryane for giving him. With the constant support of his family buffeting his sails, Mark has at long last embarked upon his musical voyage. Like the permeating and memorable fragrance of a pua kenikeni blossom, Mark’s voice will no doubt make a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of all who hear it. 1990-2015 In 1974, Irvine voters approved the first of two bond issues to support the construction of a community performing arts facility. It was finally a partnership of the City of Irvine, the University of California, Irvine, and the volunteer leadership and professional staff of the nonprofit Irvine Barclay Theatre Operating Company that refined the vision and got the job done. The city led the construction; the university provided the land; the theatre’s operating company augmented public support with millions of dollars of private contributions including major gifts from the Barclay family, the Cheng family and The Irvine Company.
