WELCOME Luis Bravo’s tango spectacle, Forever Tango, kick starts 2014 and continues what is a season of extraordinary modern dance, world, tap and flamenco here at Irvine Barclay Theatre. Thank you for coming tonight.
New York’s Cedar Lake Ballet (Feb. 13), formed just over ten years ago, was recently named by a major London newspaper as the best dance performance in that city during 2013. The same program will be presented here.
Tap monster, Savion Glover, and a troop of brilliant young hoofers (Mar. 8-9) will beguile you with unimaginable rhythms. The Barclay’s esteemed flamenco program ramps up with the company of Eva Yerbabuena (Mar. 15-16). The National Endowment for the Arts recently acknowledged the Barclay’s efforts and this superstar with a special grant in support of her March appearances.
A shining star from Los Angeles, Jacques Heim’s company, Diavolo (May 16-17), closes an already ambitious dance season with a different program each evening.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST Juan Paulo Horvath (Dance Captain). From 1996 to 2001, he was one of the principal dancers of the Ballet Folklorico National of Argentina. He has also toured throughout Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Japan. Horvath performed in Argentina at the Teatro Colón with Mariano Mores. He also performed in Tango Sinfonico with Miguel Angel Zotto, Pablo Ziegler and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Opera House in Australia in 2001 and 2002. In July 2004, he joined Forever Tango on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre. Since then, he has been traveling with the show. He holds the position of Dance Captain. Victoria Galoto (Dancer) studied ballet, jazz and contemporary dance in Europe and the United States. She received a scholarship from Michelle Assaff to train in New York with several dance companies, including Trisha Brown Dance Company, Merce Cunningham and Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. She has performed in Twins at the National Dance Center of Paris, France. As a singer and dancer she participated in the musical Love Liza and performed in Sweet Charity as 6 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
a principal dancer. In 2011, she appeared in the video Frio with Ricky Martin. Since 2007, she has performed a principal role in Forever Tango.
Anna Trebunskaya (Dancer), a native of Russia, has been dancing since she was six years old. Anna moved to the U.S. with her parents in 1998 at the age of 17. Both her mom and dad were professional ballroom dancers − to this day her mother still creates many of her costumes for competitions. Appearing on the majority of the Dancing with the Stars seasons, Anna has helped create some of the most memorable moments on the show. On Season Two she was paired with football great Jerry Rice and the duo made it to the finals, and ultimately earned a second place finish. Her other partners on the show have included model Albert Reed, funnyman Steve Guttenberg, Chuck Liddell, Olympian Evan Lysacek, NFL Hall-of-Famer Kurt Warner, boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard and Carson Kressley. Anna is married to fellow professional dancer, Jonathan Roberts. The couple owns and operates a dance studio in Hermosa Beach, CA called You Can Dance.
Ezequiel López Hudyma (Dancer) started his dance studies at an early age. In 2003, he joined Tanguera - The Tango Musical, performing in Buenos Aires, Chile and Japan. He has also performed in several Tango houses in Argentina, including Piazzola Tango, La Ventana, Tango Gala, Tango Palace, El Viejo Almacén and Madero Tango. He has toured Hamburg, Scotland, Wales, England, United States, Russia and Germany. In addition to his career as a performer, he has given master classes in Japan, Chile and Argentina. Sebastián Ripoll & Mariana Bojanich (Dancers). Mariana started her studies in Argentine folklore at four. She also studied classical and contemporary dance, singing and drama. Sebastián also started his training in folklore and contemporary dance at a very young age. In 1999, they began working as dance partners, performing Argentine Tango and folklore at theatres in Argentina. They also performed in Tango houses in Buenos Aires, including Café Tortoni, Boca Tango, La Ventana Tango, Tango Gala and Piazzolla. From 2001 to 2009 they toured Japan, performing in Tokyo, Osaka, Gifu, Fukuoka, Nagano, Hiroshima, Kokura, Nagasaki, Chiba and Sapporo. They also performed in Korea between 2003 and 2005. As teachers, they have participated in exhibitions and workshops at dance academies in Brazil, Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, Mexico City, Guadalajara, etc. They joined the cast of Forever Tango in 2010.
David Leguizamon & Belén Bartolome (Dancers). Belén began studying ballet with many renowned masters at the early age of eight. As a couple they began their career by touring Japan for many years. Participating in the most prestigious festivals of Japan, they performed in Tango Libertad with Juan Carlos Copes and the orchestras of Osvaldo Berlingieri and Komatsu Ryota. In Buenos Aires, they have appeared in the most popular Tango houses, including La Ventanta, Piazzolla Tango and Homero Manzi. They joined the cast of Forever Tango in 2007.
Ezequiel Paludi & Geraldine Rojas (Dancers) have brought their fine interpretation of the authentic Argentine Tango to numerous festivals, workshops and events around the world. They have taken part in such Buenos Aires shows as Michelangelo, El Querandi, La Ventana, Esquina Carlos Gardel and more. They have participated in Tango productions, including Corrientes Esquina Glamour, Alma de Tango, Tango Review, Tus Besos Fueron Míos, Trasnoche Tangueril, La Pesada del Tango (with Juan Carlos Copes). They have also appeared in movies: The Men Who Captured Adolf Eichmann (Dir. William A. Graham), Je ne suis pas la pour etre aime (Dir. Stephane Brize), Assassination Tango (Dir. Robert Duval), El Ultimo Bandoneón (Dir. Alejandro Saderman). On television, they can be seen on Milano al Teatro, a weekly show dedicated to the performing arts. They have performed and taught throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. They recently joined the cast of Forever Tango.
Julio Altez & Gisele Avanzi (Dancers). Gisele started her studies of classical, Spanish and folkloric dance at a young age. In 1997, she won the Festival Nacional de Folklore de Cosquín. Her energetic, elegant and vivid style caught Mr. Bravo’s attention, and she appeared with Forever Tango at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway in April 1998. She has toured with Forever Tango throughout Japan, Korea, Mexico, Canada, Italy, Portugal and United States. Julio was the winner of the Carlos Gardel Competition, sponsored by the Argentine government. In 1991, he performed in Madrid at Feria Internacional de las Naciones, and between 1992 and 1997 he worked in Japan, performing with the Orchestra Astrorico in Kioto. He has toured throughout the United States, Italy, New Zealand, Mexico and Japan.
MartÍn De LeÓn (Singer) started his artistic career in the 70’s in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He came to the United States in 1975. In 1978, he held his first concert at the Carnegie Recital Hall with the show Nueva Canción Latinoamericana. The success of his hit “No Me Llames Extranjero” (Don’t Call Me Foreigner) took him to The Astrodome, The Coliseum and The Astroworld of Houston, Texas. While in New York, he performed at the Summer Festival at the World Trade Center with Tito Puente. In the same year, Martín was chosen by Maestro Astor Piazzolla to perform his María de Buenos Aires. Also in 1987, he performed at the United Nations celebrating “100 Years of Gardel.” In 1992, he participated in a tribute to Astor Piazzolla in New York with Al Di Meola, Dino Saluzzy, Gary Mulligan and the quintet directed by Maestro Raúl Jaurena. Mr. De León returned to Argentina in 1993 to share the stage with Rubén Juárez, Alba Solís and Raúl Lavié at the Café Homero. He was named Florida’s “Distinguished Visitor” at the Festival Argentino in Miami, where he also performed at the First Tango Festival together with Argentino Ledesma, Horacio Deval, Alberto Podestá and Jorge Valdez, receiving the Best New Artist Award. In 1999, he toured Canada as part of the show Tango Vivo. In 2000, De León joined Tango Dreams, performing throughout the United States and Israel in 2001. In 2001, he performed Piazzolla’s María de Buenos Aires once again, in Washington, DC. He also performed with the show Beats of Passion at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. In 2003, Martín de León performed with Tango Dreams and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in New Mexico as well as The Long Beach Arena in Los Angeles, CA. In 2005, he appeared with the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico with Piazzolla and Ferrer’s María de Buenos Aires. Víctor Lavallén (Orchestra Conductor). Maestro Lavallén was born in Rosario, Argentina. He began his career with Eduardo Serrano’s Orchestra. In 1950, he joined Miguel Caló’s orchestra. He has also played with Angel Dominguez, Miguel Nijensohn, Enrique Mario Francini and Atilio Stampone. In 1958, he joined Osvaldo Pugliese’s orchestra. Some of his standout musical arrangements are “Gallo Diego” and “Bandoneón Arrabalero.” In 1965, he toured with OsvaldoPugliese throughout Russia, China and Japan. Three years later he founded the Sexteto Tango and toured throughout Central America, United States and France. In 1995, he toured Japan with Orlando Trípodi’s orchestra. He joined Forever Tango in London in 1995.

ARGEMIRA AFFONSO (Costume Designer) or simply “Miro,” was born and raised in the city of Manaus, in northern Brazil, along the Amazon River. Her mother sent her to learn embroidery and pattern making, and though talented, Miro had no intention of following in the footsteps of her mother, a dressmaker. Pursuing other interests, she enrolled at the University in Manaus and studied geography and later administration. To make ends meet, she ran her own workshop where her designs were shown locally at fashion shows and exhibitions. She did her first costume work on the movie Fitzcarraldo, which was shot in Manaus. Broadway critics nominated her for the Drama Desk Award in 1998 for Best Costume Design.
ROLANDO OBREGÓN (Sound Designer), a native of Formosa, Argentina is a live audio engineering. He joined Forever Tango when it toured South America and Korea, and since then he has traveled with the show throughout North America, Asia, Europe, Mexico and Argentina. Roly is pleased to work with such a unique and artistic show as Forever Tango.
JORGE VERNIERI (Pianist) studied at the Manuel de Falla Conservatory in Argentina. He played with orchestras headed by Eduardo Del Piano, Armando Pontier, Miguel Caló and many others. He attended postgraduate studies in piano and composition at the Puerto Rico Conservatory with J. M. Sanromá. For many years he lived in Los Angeles, where he played with Lalo Schifrin and the late Henry Mancini. While living in Las Vegas, he was the pianist for the Tropicana’s Follies Bergere and the Lido du Paris at the Stardust and Dunes hotels.
JEAN-LUC DON VITO (Make-up and Hair Designer) was born in Lyon, France. He has been with Forever Tango since 1994. Mr. Don Vito has worked on productions staged by the noted directors Claudio Segovia and Héctor Orezzoli, including Tango Argentino, Flamenco Puro, Black and Blue and Noche Tropical. He was also involved in the productions of Cats and 42nd Street in Paris. He designed Faust Argentino and the revue Cabaret Coconuts for Alfredo Arias in Europe and makeup for models appearing in major fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle and Glamour. He especially thanks his master teacher Dany Sanz, creator of the line Make Up For Ever. 8 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
LUIS BRAVO (Director/Creator). A world-class musician, Mr. Bravo was born in Añatuya, Santiago de Estero and moved to Buenos Aires when he was eight. Mr. Bravo attended both the Municipal Conservatory of Music Manuel de Falla and the University of Buenos Aires. Shortly after his graduation, he became a member of the Argentine National Symphony. In 1981, he moved to the United States to study with the celebrated teacher Ronald Leonard. An avid performer of Argentinian music, Mr. Bravo performed in the world premier of the Double Concerto for Cello, Bandoneón and Orchestra by Lisandro Adrover − a widely praised piece that was dedicated to him. In addition to his solo career, Mr. Bravo has firmly established himself as an artistic producer with a recognized reputation. In 1996, he was awarded the Spoleto Festival’s coveted Simpatia Prize. In 1998, he and Ruben Blades received a special distinction from ACE as the two most successful Latin artists on Broadway. The Boston Pops Orchestra presented a special program of his work for the series “Evening at Pops” for PBS with Leslie Caron as a host. In 2002, he created Malambo. In this production, Mr. Bravo and his company of 30 performers direct from Argentina offer an electric panorama of Argentine music, song and dance, incorporating the juxtaposition of the rural gaucho dance tradition known as Malambo with the urban sophistication of Tango. The Tango took root in a culture created by European immigrants converging in Buenos Aires during the late nineteenth century. Urban and nocturnal, it was popularized in the brothels as a dance of loneliness, passion and lust. Luis Bravo, creator and director of Forever Tango and Malambo, chose to put on the stage the classic conflict of the culture of the land with that of the city, utilizing the music of Dimitri Shostakovich (representing the product of his erudite and academic education) as neutral ground for the final clash between the culture of the native and that of the European immigrant. From his masterful hand, came these two beautiful productions that are Argentine in origin, yet universal in appeal.
