WELCOME WELCOME TO IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE’S 2013-14 SEASON, the 24th. Soon enough you’ll be hearing the drums beating announcing our celebratory 25th. So, we’re starting now in this first program edition of the current season to bring to mind what’s special about the Barclay. Cheng Hall, the venue at the heart of the theatre complex, has proven itself to be a remarkably versatile auditorium and stage. Designed some 30 years ago by Larry Cannon of the notable San Francisco architectural firm, Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons, the building’s style has also endured nicely in an urban environment that has literally grown up around it.

However, what makes the Barclay truly special, we think, is the level of performance relative to the intimacy of the space. Throughout the previous seasons, whether presented by the Barclay itself or by a constituent organization, we have seen evenings of theater, dance, music and forms of entertainment that one would simply not expect to experience in such modest (I say modestly) surroundings. I’ll be writing about some of them in future editions of this publication. May we all have a great season!

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE LAW OF GRAVITY WERE TO SUDDENLY CHANGE? LEO is a mind-bending, funny, surreal, and surprisingly touching work that challenges the senses and tests perceptions of reality through the clever interplay of live performance and video projection. LEO leaves audience members wondering which way is up and which way is down. Directed by the Montréal actor and director Daniel Briére, and based on an original idea by the multi-talented performer Tobias Wegner, LEO has won several major awards including the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award, the Three Weeks Editors Award, the Scotsman Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and more recently, the John Chataway Award for Innovation at the 2013 Adelaide Fringe Festival. LEO has dazzled audiences and critics from New York to Berlin, from Melbourne to Hong Kong with stops in Montréal, Moscow and London along the way. LEO is now touring in countries all around the world. PERFORMER
William Bonnet, born in Avignon, France, took his first steps in the circus world with the French company Couleurs Mécaniques. He toured throughout Europe with the company for 6 months. Afterwards, he attended the Ècole de Cirque de Lomme near Lille, where he specialised in aerial acrobatics on the aerial straps. He eventually added various disciplines, such as hand-to-hand acrobatics, hip hop dance, floor acrobatics and clown performance, to his artistic repertoire at the National Circus School in Montréal, Canada. William is a true all-rounder whose skills were seen at the opening of the 30th Festival Mondial de Cirque de Demain in Paris and Montréal, and with many other companies and directors including Circle of Eleven, Franco Dragone and Les 7 doigts de la main / the 7 fingers. CREATIVE TEAM
Daniel Brière (Director). Actor, stage director and playwright, Daniel Brière is artistic director of the Montrèal-based NTE (Nouvelle Theatre Experimental), where he has been performing and creating new plays since 2003. As an actor, he has performed in many theatres in Canada and Europe since his graduation from the Conservatoire. On television, he was seen in Caméra café and in Les Parents, the popular family comedy on CBC. On the big screen, his performances have included parts in Le déclin de l’empire américain, La moitié gauche du frigo, Gaz Bar Blues and C’est pas moi je le jure, presented at several film festivals. Daniel has directed some twenty plays, including Bashir Lazhar and La Fin. Tobias Wegner (Original Performer /Original Idea) completed his acrobatic training at the Belgium University of Contemporary Circus Arts (E.S.A.C.) in Brussels. His professional career has taken him to, among other places, Brazil, Spain, and India. He has also performed at the Southbank Centre (London), the Théâtre de la
Cité Internationale (Paris), the Schauspiel Frankfurt, and the Staatsoper unter den Linden (Berlin). Tobias won the European competition, Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe, with the project AIUAIO and his own company of the same name. Gregg Parks (Creative Producer) toured the world as an onstage performer and gradually became fascinated with production and its limitless possibilities. It was a natural evolution to withdraw from the spotlight and continue creating theater from behind the scenes. Gregg was production/tour manager for the Canadian circus company The 7 Fingers engagement at the Chamäleon Theatre in Berlin. Gregg was the creative producer for LEO, having played a key role in the success of the new circus productions Soap! The Show, myLIFE, and VERSUS. Flavia Hevia (Set and Lighting Designer) is a visual artist and a set and lighting designer for theater. Her visual art and designs have been seen around the world. Flavia’s theater design work provides the platform for TRACES for Les 7 doigts de la main (The 7 Fingers) and LEO, among many others. Flavia recently established Anonimato, an emerging multidisciplinary puppet company.
Heiko Kalmbach (Video Designer) studied theater in Germany and film at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. His films have screened internationally at such festivals as Berlinale. He is a co-founder of the Berlin and NYbased performance group Naturaleza Humana. His work as a theater director, projection designer and video artist has been presented in Europe, North America and India. Ingo Panke (Animation) studied at the Konrad Wolf Academy of Film & Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg. He has created award-winning animated films, computer game designs and illustrations for leading companies in the motion picture, marketing and video game industries. Heather MacCrimmon (Costume Designer) is a costume designer formerly based in Toronto and now dividing her time between Germany and Canada. She has worked in film, television and theater, with a focus on costuming contemporary dance.

SYNOPSIS Act I Sarastro, High Priest of Isis, has abducted Pamina in order to remove her from the evil influence of her mother, the Queen of the Night. The young prince Tamino has strayed into the Queen’s realm while hunting; she prevails upon him to rescue Pamina, whose portrait has kindled his love. He is given a magic flute for protection on the way. The bird-catcher, Papageno, who will be his companion, receives a magic chime of bells. In Sarastro’s palace, Pamina is being importuned by the Moor Monostatos, captain of the guard. Papageno is the first to enter the palace; he finds Pamina, and together they go in search of Tamino, who has been guided to the palace by the Three Boys. Discovering that Sarastro, far from being a wicked magician, is the high priest in the Temple of Wisdom, Tamino is willing to undergo many trials in order to be admitted to the Temple and to win Pamina. He plays his flute in the hope that Papageno will reply; but only wild animals come. Attempting to escape, Papageno and Pamina are intercepted by Monostatos, who is subdued by the magic chimes. Sarastro appears with his attendants, making escape impossible. Monostatos drags in Tamino, and the lovers embrace. Pamina, Tamino and Papageno are taken into the Temple, where they are bound to silence.
Act II Sarastro announces to the assembled priests that Tamino has been chosen by the gods as Pamina’s consort, but must first gain admission to the Temple. Monostatos still has designs on Pamina. The Queen of the Night appears and urges her daughter to avenge her by killing Sarastro. When Pamina begs Sarastro to have mercy for her mother, he tells her that vengeful thoughts have no place in the Temple. Tamino endures all the trials with fortitude, even when Pamina believes he is rejecting her because he will not break his vow of silence. Together, Tamino and Pamina undergo the final trials of fire and water. Although Papageno has no taste for trials, in the end he is granted his Papagena. The Queen’s attempts to take vengeance on Sarastro through Monostatos (to whom she has promised her daughter as a reward) are in vain. Sarastro receives Tamino and Pamina, now united, into the circle of initiates. The sun’s rays drive away the night.

For generations audiences have cherished performances by the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, founded in 1913 by sculptor Anton Aicher. A large theatre with “small actors,” the Salzburg Marionettes have charmed countless children and adults over the last century earning a celebrated reputation throughout the world. The company is known for its diverse repertoire, but its fame lies in its recreations of beloved operas performed to recordings by the world’s finest orchestras and singers. For the first time in its 100-year history, the Salzburg Marionette Theatre takes on the works of Richard Wagner. Ring of the Nibelung condenses Wagner’s epic into an absorbing 75-minute performance. This shortened version of Wagner’s famed operas presents the bestknown scenes of all four operas in the cycle through the unrivaled puppetry of the Salzburg Marionettes. Loge, the fire god, narrates the story of The Ring and guides the audience through the plot’s twists and turns with the comic help of a dwarf named Alberich. Enjoyed by beginners and young audiences, as well as opera aficionados, the show features Sir Georg Solti’s acclaimed recordings of the operas. SYNOPSIS
The story starts on the banks of the River Rhine. Following Alberich’s playful game with the Rhinemaidens, he steals the maiden’s magical Rhinegold and makes the Ring, a ring that grants its owner the right to rule the world. Along come the giants, Fafner and Fasolt; they fight, but Alberich loses the Ring to the giants. The scene ends with the gods revealing the newly-built Valhalla. Next, young Siegmund pulls the sword from the oak, takes a wild ride with the Valkyries, and witnesses Wotan’s tender farewell to his beloved daughter, Brünnhilde. Brünnhilde has earned the wrath of the gods and is put under a spell. Encased by a ring of fire, she sleeps until she can be rescued by a hero that can pierce the flames. Many years later... Siegmund is forging a new sword. He is on a quest to kill the dragon, take the Ring, and awaken the sleeping Brünnhilde in the ring of fire. Siegmund is succesful in his quest and gives the Ring to his love, Brünnhilde, for safe-keeping. All kind of trickery and subterfuge result in the Ring being again stolen by Siegfried. Hagen, in search of the Ring, tricks Brünnhilde and uses the information to kill Siegmund. Brünnhilde redeems herself by riding into Siegmund’s funeral pyre, honoring their love. As the story ends, the Rhine floods again, giving the Ring back to the Rhinemaidens.
