With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

Fresh from the success of her holiday album and PBS special, Órla Fallon’s Celtic Christmas, this Irish songbird mesmerizes audiences with her gorgeous musicality. “I have been privileged in the places that music has brought me,” says Órla Fallon, and, given the places she’s been these past years, it would be difficult to disagree. His Holiness the Pope, U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and Irish President Mary McAleese, have all sat in Órla’s audiences during the past few years. A former member of the phenomenally successful group Celtic Woman and a winner of The International Feis Ceoil and International Pan Celtic Competition, Órla has also recorded with the legendary Irish group Clannad and the acclaimed choral group Anúna. A Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, Marc Cohn (“Walking in Memphis,” “Silver Thunderbird,” “True Companion”) is a natural storyteller balancing the exuberant with the poignant. He is able to distill universal truths from his often romantic, drawnfrom-life tales. His music combines the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. The show includes songs from his latest release Listening Booth: 1970. Cohn doesn’t merely recreate the sounds of this storied year, he transforms songs from such artists as Cat Stevens, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, Smokey Robinson, Creedence Clearwater Revival and even Bread into tracks that are warm, soulful, and always full of easy-going charm. Jazz is a distinctly American art form whose influence continues to spread across the globe and send back new and exciting music influenced by its journey. The Metta Quintet explores this facet of jazz by performing works by eight composers from eight different countries. The concert incorporates an imaginative use of video allowing audiences to get to know about each of the composers and their musical sensibilities. JazzReach is an enterprising New York organization dedicated to educating children and adults in their appreciation of jazz. The Metta Quintet is comprised of some of today’s brightest players. Whether you’re a jazz aficionado, or a complete novice, this concert is a great way to learn more, and enjoy more, about jazz. Stay after the concert and meet the artists in a post-show discussion.

The Sound of Music is one of the mostbeloved musicals of all time…but you’ve never heard it quite like this. The band members of BRO have updated some of their ‘favorite things’ about these songs, with the full blessings of the von Trapp family and the Rogers & Hammerstein organization. Taking a smart approach to the music and characters, each song is in a different style. The harmony of the Jackson 5’s “ABC” transforms into the family singers learning to sing “Do-Re-Mi.” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” a testament to female empowerment, gets a Mary Blige old school treatment. Not to give it all away, but you’ll also hear some bluegrass, jazz, klezmer, and some great all-out rock ’n roll. BRO is new, but Barclay audiences may recognize some of the band members from the East Village Opera Company who were a big hit during their two previous appearances here. “I like what they’re doing. I think they’re terrific musicians,” says Johannes von Trapp, 72, the youngest of the von Trapp siblings depicted in the film. “They took songs that have been played so often they’ve become clichéd, and did some exciting stuff with them.” Tickets: $28, $33, $38

You can be sure of an evening of highstyle, droll wit, and fabulous music when Max Raabe and his big band return to the Barclay. This urbane group from Berlin is renowned for recreating the musical glory of the Weimar-era, pop songs of the 20s and 30s, and exquisitely crafted modern love songs. Some are songs you’ve heard many times, and some are songs you will want to hear again and again. Max’s winsome demeanor and playful banter have charmed audiences from Carnegie Hall to L.A. He may sing with tongue in cheek, but always in high musical style.

April 22, 2012 at 4pm Anoushka Shankar breaks new ground as she brings together the passionate and diverse music of Spain with the vibrant, ancient forms of the Indian classical tradition. Tracing the Gypsies’ musical journey from their homeland in Rajasthan, through Iran, Iraq and Armenia, to Spain, Anoushka forges a link, separated by a thousand years, between Spanish and Indian music. Anoushka has worked closely with the renowned Flamenco producer Javier Limón, immersing herself in the Spanish forms of flamenco, fandango, buleria and tango. Featuring a number of talented artists, the concert meshes Indian sitar and Spanish guitar with Hindustani vocals and gypsy cante. Flashing rhythms and intricate melodies from both musical traditions create a new energy and a totally unique sound.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band July 6, 2012 at 8pm Of all the styles of American music, none is more iconic than jazz. Born of hard times, the music is a defiant celebration of freedom and individuality. It has taken many forms over the years, and continues to evolve, but New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band proves nightly that there’s plenty of adventure left in its original form: the rich musical interplay known as New Orleans-style jazz. A French Quarter legend, Preservation Hall’s original members honed their talents playing alongside jazz originators such as Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden and Jelly Roll Morton. Their craft, in turn, has been passed on directly to successive generations of band members. Not everyone can go to New Orleans, but this seven-piece band is only too glad to bring it to you. Jamie Adkins in
Circus Incognitus November 26–27, 2011 Sat at 2pm & 7pm; Sun at 2pm A Thanksgiving weekend treat! It’s a circus-comedy, a unique theatrical experience, a tour de force, about a man who has something to say but can’t quite get it out. Charmingly Chaplain-esque, Jamie Adkins possesses extraordinary circus skills — balancing, wire-walking, juggling — while it is his comedic pathos that wins the day. In a recent showcase of top talent in Montreal, the North American center of circus, Adkins rose above the rest and captivated an entire audience of international presenters. He closed the show by (wordlessly) inviting members of the audience to throw fruit at him which he then caught on the tines of a fork in his mouth, sometimes lunging through the air. The crowd went wild. The Barclay is pleased to offer this exceptional performer’s show at value prices we hope will get your holiday season off to a great start. Be forewarned! They may look like cuddly little muppets wonderfully crafted by the Henson Workshop, but they have a wicked sense of humor. No two performances are alike. Host Patrick Bristow and six superb comedian/ puppeteers improvise on suggestions from the audience, often with uproarious results. Watch the action onstage, while viewing the live video feed projected on screens overhead. It’s double the fun. Each show also features recreations of a couple of Jim Henson classics that first aired on the Ed Sullivan Show and launched the Henson phenomenon. It’s a musical, sort of. But, it’s really a wall-to-wall, song-after-song entertainment extravaganza of Blues Brothers-era hits including “Think,” “Respect,” and “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.” Jake and Elwood, the beautiful Bluettes and a sizzling hot band literally fill up the stage and hall with the infectious sound of soul and R&B. The original Blues Brothers tribute band started in an English pub in 1991. Producers who were fans of the characters created by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd brought the band to the stage in a rapturous run in London’s West End. The production evolved, has toured for years in Europe and Asia and now, at last, appears in the U.S. From the moment Jake and Elwood “descend” on stage to the stand-up finale, the Blues Brothers are “on a mission” to entertain. The 7 Fingers
P-S-Y
may 9–13, 2012 wed–Sat at 8pm; Sun at 3pm From Montreal, The 7 Fingers is Canada’s latest rising star in the cirque world. Their show, Traces, is already an international hit. And P-S-Y, their fifth show, is on its way. Just check out the reviews from their summer run in Boston. The ten-year-old company’s name in French (Les 7 Doigts de la Main) refers to the company’s seven founders, and is a twist on an idiom about disparate elements working together like fingers of a hand. “Most dreams last only five to 20 minutes,” a voice intones in the opening moments of P-S-Y, a whimsical and whirlwind subconscious journey through the human psyche. This one lasts nearly two hours and according to the Boston Globe is “…a transfixing circus spectacle that boggles both the mind and eye…” The Boston Examiner agrees, “The performance delved into the human psyche with a combination of physically demanding circus arts, graceful choreography, and stunning theatrics. After seeing P-S-Y, I believe the show’s tagline ‘Mind-Blowing Circus’ is a fairly accurate description.” Tickets: Wed & Thur: $38, $45 Fri, Sat & Sun: $45, $55 $100 Gold Seats [see pg 30 for Gold benefits.]

This program marks an evolution of the Barclay’s 20-year involvement in dance. It is being designed to increase the significance and profile of dance in Orange County and to increase the community’s engagement with dance. The theatre intends to grow new audiences, to provide opportunities for adults and students to learn about dance and dancemaking, and to collaborate in creative ways with members of the Orange County dance community. A “second-tier” series of more exploratory work is being considered with the introduction of famed Irish dancer, Colin Dunne, who has pushed far beyond his traditional background. There is more to come.

Colin Dunne sheds his past in his first full-length solo show. Out of Time seamlessly integrates movement, film and sound design to offer an utterly new twist on step dance, the art form for which Dunne is internationally acclaimed. Dunne is joined onstage by archival film images of dancers from the 1930’s onwards — including himself as a tenyear old boy — creating a provocative dialogue between past and present. The show has become highly regarded at international arts festivals, and the Barclay is pleased to host its West Coast premiere. Intimate and playful, Out of Time is an unsentimental homage to Irish step dance and a bold look at Dunne’s personal and artistic relationship with a tradition that has shaped his life.
