This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Welcome to the 12th annual National Choreographers Initiative! I am so thrilled with the growth of this collaborative, creative endeavor and thank you all for your continued support of NCI! When I first dreamt of this initiative, I wanted to foster choreographic creativity in a workshop setting without the strict deadlines, expectations or mandates. This project was made possible through the vision and commitment of the NCI Advisory Committee. The partnership with Irvine Barclay Theatre has been central to the success of NCI, as they act as our fiscal agent and present the Discovery showing. We are also grateful to UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts – Dance Department, which provides the studio space for our rehearsals. I extend my sincerest thanks to all of the individuals who contribute to this project! This year we are especially pleased to have been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This grant has allowed us to expand our marketing on a national scale and support the enhancement of the production. NCI’s Discovery showing features new work from four innovative choreographers – Nicolas Blanc, Norbert De La Cruz III, Jimmy Orrante and Sarah Tallman – created during a three-week intensive process with sixteen professional dancers from across the country. I hope that you will engage in the creative process with these choreographers in our discussion at the conclusion of the showcase.

Special Thanks to:

Since 2004, NCI has hosted 41 choreographers, 106 dancers, and showcased 44 new works – 25 of which have been produced by companies throughout the United States. As the national scope of NCI continues to expand, I look forward to many more artistic achievements in the years to come! Thank you for supporting dance!
