Festival Ballet Theatre This season of Nutcracker performances marks a very special milestone for Festival Ballet Theatre as we celebrate our 25th anniversary in Orange County. We are honored that many families have made FBT’s Nutcracker part of their holiday tradition; and we are very happy that you could join us today. Our Nutcracker is a highlight of our season and involves more than 150 dancers who move with grace and precision in their portrayals of beloved characters, including the Sugar Plum Fairy and her handsome Cavalier, our heroine Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, battling toy soldiers and twirling sweets from many lands.
Dancing the lead roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier are esteemed guest artists: Irina Dvorovenko and Maxim Beloserkovsky of American Ballet Theatre, Beckanne Sisk from Ballet West and Fabrice Calmels of the Joffrey Ballet, and Stella Abrera and Sascha Radetsky, also from ABT. Each year amazing guest artists join FBT’s resident company members and local talent to celebrate the holiday season. Earlier this year, our 2013-2014 season opened with the presentation of Firebird and Texture of Time, which were commissioned specifically for our company, and were acknowledged by the audience with standing ovations. In March, our season will continue with the beloved romantic ballet, Giselle. In August, Gala of the Stars will conclude our season, bringing ballet superstars to Orange County to perform to the delight of our audiences.

ABOUT FESTIVAL BALLET THEATRE Under the direction of Salwa Rizkalla since its founding in 1988, Festival Ballet Theatre has become one of Southern California’s most vibrant and accomplished professional ballet companies. Festival Ballet Theatre strives to enrich the experience of Orange County’s dance audience by highlighting the work of world-renowned guest and resident choreographers. With reverence to masterpieces of the past and a clear focus on developing future tours de force, FBT presents a varied repertoire of full-length classical ballets, including The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Don Quixote, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, as well as contemporary works by some of the nation’s most sought-after choreographers. Festival Ballet Theatre was also the bid winner of Ballet Pacifica’s Assets Auction, purchasing the dissolved company’s names, sets, costumes and photography archive in order to preserve these treasures for FBT and the Orange County dance community.

Salwa Rizkalla Artistic Director
Salwa Rizkalla’s artistic vision and community involvement led to the creation of Festival Ballet Theatre, and its precursor Southland Ballet Academy. Her credentials as a classical ballet dancer include an impressive list of leading roles in wellknown classical ballets, as well as appearances in original contemporary pieces. During her distinguished career
as a professional dancer, Rizkalla had the privilege of working under the direction of world-renowned choreographers Leonid Lavrovsky and Serge Lifar. Trained in the Russian Vaganova method and having studied with ballet masters of the Bolshoi and the Kirov, Rizkalla holds a bachelor of arts degree in Ballet Pedagogy. Under Rizkalla’s tutelage and guidance, dancers have achieved their greatest goals by joining prestigious national and international ballet companies. In addition to her responsibilities as the artistic director of Festival Ballet Theatre and her busy teaching schedule at the Southland Ballet Academy, Rizkalla was a faculty member of several area institutions in Orange County. A fully credentialed California teacher, she has been a dedicated educator, a tireless promoter of the arts, and an active participant in the cultural life of her community for more than 25 years. Her contributions have been recognized by The Orange County Music and Arts Administrators and Orange County Performing Arts Center with an Orange County Arts Educator of the Year Award for Secondary Dance (2003). Stella Abrera of South Pasadena, Ca. began her studies with Philip and Charles Fuller and Cynthia Young at Le Studio in Pasadena. She also spent three years studying the Royal Academy of Dance method with Joan and Monica Halliday at the Halliday Dance Centre in Sydney, Australia. Abrera joined American Ballet Theatre as a member of the corps de ballet in 1996 and was appointed soloist in 2001. Her repertoire with ABT includes Afternoon of a Faun, Apollo, La Bayadère, The Bright Stream, Cinderella, Coppélia, Le Corsaire, Fancy Free, Giselle, Manon, The Nutcracker, among others. Abrera created the roles of His Memory and His Experiences in HereAfter, the Spanish Dance in Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker, His Mistress in Weren’t We Fools? and leading roles in Pièce d’Occasion with Herbie Hancock, Pretty Good Year and Seven Sonatas. A principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, Maxim Beloserkovsky received his dance training at the Kiev Ballet Institute. In 1990, he danced as a leading soloist with the National Opera of Bulgaria where he remained for one year. From 1991 to 1994, he was a principal dancer with the National Opera Ballet of Ukraine. He performed most of the major roles in the classical repertory. In 1993, Mr. Beloserkovsky was honored by the president of Ukraine for outstanding artistic achievement. Joining ABT in 1994, Mr. Beloserkovsky was made a soloist in 1995 and was appointed principal dancer in 2000. Born and raised in France, Fabrice Calmels began ballet training at the age of three. In 1991, he entered the Paris Opera School. He has worked with world-renowned dance masters such as Serge Golovine, Gilbert Mayer, Max Bozzoni, John Neumier, Jirí Kylián, among others. He has performed at the beautiful Palais Garnier opera theatre. In 1998, he moved to the United States and furthered his training by joining The Rock School. At Boston Ballet, he learned the Russian technique with ballet masters Tatiana Terekhova and Sergei Berezhnoi and also the Balanchine style at The School of American Ballet. Mr. Calmels joined The Joffrey Ballet in 2002 and has danced in the Age of Innocence, Apollo, Carousel a Dance, The Clowns, I/DNA, In the Middle…Somewhat Elevated, The Nutcracker and Suite Saint Saëns. Fabrice has appeared several times on television and was featured on Chicago’s WGN TV. He dances with ABT Principal, Veronica Part in guest performances. He has also expanded into acting, performing the role of Nijinsky in MISIA by writer Barry Singer, performed at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival. In 2008, Mr. Calmels collaborated with world-famous musician JeanFelix Lalanne, and his choreography was performed at Autour de la Guitarre in Paris. A principal dancer with ABT, Irina Dvorovenko was born in Kiev, Ukraine and began her ballet training at the Kiev Ballet School at the age of 10. She joined the National Opera Ballet of Kiev in 1990 as a soloist, rising to the rank of principal dancer in 1992. A dancer of infinite range, her repertoire with the National Opera Ballet included leading roles in many of the great classics: La Bayadère, Don Quixote, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Cinderella and Paquita. Ms. Dvorovenko’s superlative style and technique have been recognized in numerous ballet competitions throughout the world. Her most notable awards include the 1994 Grand Prix at the International Ballet Competition Serge Lifar in Ukraine, the 1992 Gold Medal and “Anna Pavlova” Prize at the International Ballet Competition in Moscow, the 1991 Bronze Medal at the International Ballet Competition in Osaka, Japan, 6 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
and the 1990 Silver Medal at the International Competition in Jackson, Mississippi. Joining ABT in 1996, Ms. Dvorovenko was made a soloist in 1997 and was appointed principal dancer in 2000. Her diverse repertoire with ABT includes La Bayadère, Cinderella, Don Quixote, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Giselle, Romeo and Juliet, Raymonda, Coppélia, The Nutcracker, among others. Dvorovenko also excels in contemporary choreography and has danced leading roles in Twyla Tharp’s Push Comes to Shove, The Brahams-Haydn Variations and In The Upper Room; Balanchine’s Symphony in C; and Kylián’s Petit Mort. Born in Santa Cruz, Ca., Radetsky began his ballet studies in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the age of 15, he was invited to study in Moscow at the Bolshoi Academy under world-renowned men’s teacher Pytor Pestov. After a year in Russia, he studied on scholarship at the Kirov Academy in Washington, D. C. He studied on scholarship at the summer programs of the School of American Ballet and American Ballet Theatre’s School of Classical Ballet with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Radetsky joined ABT as an apprentice in 1995, became a member of the corps de ballet in 1996 and a soloist in 2003. His repertoire includes La Bayadère, The Bright Stream, Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1, Cinderella, Giselle, The Nutcracker, Othello, Petrouchka and Raymonda. In 2000, Radetsky starred as Charlie in the movie Center Stage as well as in pop singer Mandy Moore’s music video “I Wanna Be With You” from the Center Stage soundtrack. He has appeared in numerous television and print commercials as well as starring roles in the PBS movie Home at Last and in the NBC television series Midnight Caller. He has written for Newsweek, Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit and World Arts Today.com. He is married to ABT Soloist Stella Abrera. In 2008, Radetsky joined Dutch National Ballet as a principal dancer, where his repertoire included Don Giovanni, Don Quixote, The Four Temperaments, Giselle and Prodigal Son. Beckanne Sisk studied at Longview Ballet Theater until the age of 14. She then moved to Philadelphia, PA to attend The Rock School for Dance Education’s RAPA program for four years. Sisk won the Jerome Robbins Award in 2007. She joined Ballet West II in 2010, was promoted to New Dancer in 2011, Demi-Soloist in 2012 and then to Soloist in 2013. She has performed leading roles in Anna Marie Holmes Don Quixote, The Firebird, and Marius Petipa’s Paquita. Sisk has been featured on Breaking Pointe, a TV series on the CW. She

competed in the Beijing International Ballet Competition in June 2012, winning the Bronze Medal. Sisk was featured in the “On The Rise” column of Dance Magazine in July 2012, and was the recipient of the 2012 Princess Grace, Dance Fellowship Award.
COMPANY DANCERS AJ Abrams is a native of Long Beach, Ca. At age 19, he began his professional career at Ballet Austin. His credits with Ballet Austin include original works by Stephen Mills such as Hamlet, a featured role in the ballet Touch, and The Taming of the Shrew. He performed a solo role in Septime Webers’ Fluctuating Hemlines and principal roles as the Sugar Plum Cavalier in The Nutcracker and Albrecht in Giselle. He is currently a member of the Luminario Ballet of Los Angeles and Festival Ballet Theatre. Most recently, he performed in a music video for Florence and the Machine.
Eddy Borges began his ballet studies at the Escuela Profesional de Ballet y Artes Plasticas and Cuba’s Istituto Superior de Artes. He danced and choreographed for the Camaguey Ballet for five years. Subsequently, he took part in a cultural exchange with the Ballet del Teatro Centro de Artes in Ecuador. He danced at Ecuador’s Compania Nacional de Danza, and left Ecuador as First Dancer of Ecuador’s National Ballet. In addition to The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet and Carmen, he has also danced in neoclassical works of several choreographers. He is currently a principal artist with Ballet Latino de San Antonio.
Mariana Carrillo was born in Eagle Pass, Texas in 1995. She was raised in San Jose del Cabo, BCS and started her basic dance training at age four in Estudio del Angel. In 2006, she joined Danza Tellez. Ms. Carrillo has attended several summer intensive programs, including Pirouetteando, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Southland Ballet Academy. In August 2012, she moved to Austin, Texas to continue her training at Ballet Austin. Today, she continues her training at Southland Ballet Academy under the direction of Salwa Rizkalla and Christina Lyon.
Eddy Compos is a graduate of both the vocational arts school in Santiago de Cuba and Vicentina de la Torre, Camaguey. He has danced in national and international competitions with a repertoire that included Carnival in Venice, La Fille Mal Gardee, Majisimo, The Nutcracker and Calls from Paris. He was a soloist with the Ballet de Camaguey in Cuba, dancing in La Fille Mal Gardee, Giselle, Paquita and Coppelia. He was also a member of the Ballet Ecuatoriano de Camara in Ecuador and a soloist with Ballet Clasico de Mazatlan, Mexico, dancing the role of Peasant in Giselle, Swordsman in Don Quixote and The Nutcracker. He is currently a principal artist with Ballet Latino de San Antonio.
Marie Fuchigami, born in Japan, began her ballet training at the age of four. In 2005, she moved to the U.S. and started training with Salwa Rizkalla at Southland Ballet Academy. Marie placed in the Top 12 at Youth America Grand Prix semifinals. She was invited to the Jose Correno Summer Intensive and the trainee program of The Joffrey Ballet. She also trained at Ballet West in the summer of 2013. Gillian George started her classical training at the Lauridsen Ballet Centre. She is now in her third year at Southland Ballet Academy and an apprentice with Festival Ballet Theatre. In 2012, she competed in the Youth America Grand Prix finals. In 2013, she was awarded Second Place in the classical division and Top 12 in the contemporary division at the YAGP Los Angeles semifinals; and competed in the finals in New York. This past summer, she was asked to dance in the Gala De Danza in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. In October, she was invited to train for two weeks, on scholarship, in the graduate class at the Royal Ballet School.
Jason Glover was raised in Fresno, CA. He began dancing at age 12. He was featured in the Top 8 in Season 5 of So You Think You Can Dance; and has worked with Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera. He has appeared on television with the Goo Goo Dolls; Dancing with the Stars, MTV Video Music Awards with Florence and the Machine, Glee, Big Time Rush, Ellen, The Dr. Oz Show and SYTYCD Lithuania. This is Jason’s third season with Festival Ballet Theatre, where he has performed featured roles in The Secret Garden, Le Corsaire, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty. Jason performed a contemporary piece in FBT’s 2011 Gala of the Stars. Charles Johnston (Character Dancer, Dr. Drosselmeyer). A native of California, Charles Johnston has called Festival Ballet Theatre his home since 1994. He has danced all the lead character roles in the Company’s classical repertoire. Johnston continues to work as guest artist and has performed character roles with ABT, New York City Ballet and The Royal Ballet. A former teacher of dance and drama, he has studied with Frederic Franklin in New York; Michael Panaieff in Los Angeles; and Lila Zali, founder of the former Ballet Pacifica, in Orange County. Natalie Matsuura is a third year BFA candidate in Dance Performance and Choreography at UCI. She has trained with Southland Ballet Academy and Festival Ballet Theatre from the age of six and furthered her studies with summer programs at the Kirov Academy of Washington D.C. and ABT Orange County.

Her achievements include the William J. Gillespie Scholarship in Ballet Studies at UCI (Fall 2013), the YoungArts Merit Award (2011), LA Music Center Spotlight Awards (Semifinals 2010, 2011), and Top 12 in classical and contemporary regional categories of Youth America Grand Prix (2009-2011).
Jennah Pendleton, currently 17 yearsold, has been dancing at Southland Ballet Academy since the age of three. She joined FBT II in 2011. Since then, she has danced soloist roles in The Secret Garden, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, among others. She has trained at multiple summer programs around the country, including Houston Ballet Academy and Ballet West. Jennah is currently a senior in high school, and while her ultimate goal is to pursue a career in ballet, she is also passionate about modern art, literature, and film. Guzman Rosado attended the International School of Dance, Scaena, (Spain) and the School of American Ballet in New York. He won the International Competition of Dance in Coruna, Spain and in Torrelavega, Spain. He is a freelance dancer, appearing as a principal dancer with prestigious companies in the United States and Europe, including BodyTraffic in Los Angeles. Contemporáneo (CPBC) in Portugal and The Miami City Ballet. He teaches classical and contemporary ballet at private studios and at Loyola Marymount University.
Skye Schmidt has trained at SBA since the age of four and joined FBT in 2012. She has performed as a soloist and corps member in numerous Festival Ballet Theatre productions, including The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Coppelia, The Sleeping Beauty, among others. In 2011, she performed in the award-winning piece, Oops, in Youth America Grand Prix’s inaugural tour. Skye placed in the Top 12 in both classical and contemporary categories at Youth America Grand Prix regional 2012. Skye is currently attending UCI.
Cameron Schwanz, a former student of the National Ballet School of Canada and the Houston Ballet Academy, is currently a freelance dancer in Southern California. Cameron has danced for such companies as Texas Ballet Theater, Ballet San Jose, Los Angeles Ballet and Festival Ballet Theatre. Cameron, as always, is thankful to his supporters, family and friends.

Emily Villa was raised in Seal Beach, Ca. She has trained with Southland Ballet Academy since she was a teenager. She is currently attending UCI as a dance major. She has danced with Festival Ballet Theatre in various productions, including The Nutcracker, Firebird, Sleeping Beauty and Coppelia.
Nicole Vitale was born in Fountain Valley, Ca. She has danced at Classical Ballet Academy, Southland Ballet Academy and joined The Washington School of Ballet in 2009. She was awarded Second Place in the San Francisco Youth America Grand Prix competition. Vitale has danced in a variety of roles with The Washington Ballet: in Anna Marie Holmes’ Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Septime Webre’s The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet and Twyla Tharp’s When Push Comes to Shove. Her repertory also includes Balanchine’s Concerto Borocco and Four Temperaments.
Tiffany Yamasaki started her training at Southland Ballet Academy at the age of six. She became a member of FBT II in 2007 and an FBT company member in 2010. Tiffany has participated in many competitions and has performed with Festival Ballet Theatre as a soloist and in corps roles in The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, The Sleeping Beauty and Coppelia. Tiffany currently attends CSU Long Beach, and is in her second year of working towards a dance major degree and a major in kinesiology. Megan Yamashita attends Orange Coast College. She has been at Southland Ballet Academy, under the direction of Salwa Rizkalla, since the age of three. Some of her accomplishments include garnering Second Place in the Junior Division at the 2007 Youth America Grand Prix International Competition in Faenza, Italy; Semifinalist
in classical as well as non-classical dance at the 2008 Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards, with honorable mention in classical dance. Yamashita is also a grand prize winner of 2008 Orange County Performing Arts Center’s “Tomorrow’s Stars at the Center” in classical dance discipline. 2013-2014 FBT TRAINEES
