“I will miss: one shadow, one dream... maybe The uncertain feeling of having lived The next second without now... I learnt from a beggar that in spaces among dreams are the names of all those things that are nameless by being invisible. And they can be seen, heard, touched... felt, if you take notice. They are only syllables, words, that everyone has pronounced without knowing their meaning; and they are looking to be breathed in vain, feeling that there is someone in the world who has named them, felt them, lived them just for a while...” — Eva Yerbabuena
6 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
Eva Yerbabuena has been called “a visionary, magisterial dancer” (The Guardian), a bailaora “touched by greatness” (The Times), and a performer offering “the kind of artistry that appears once in a generation, if at all” (The Independent). She created her independent Seville-based flamenco company in 1998 and since then has earned worldwide recognition as a dancer, choreographer and multifaceted artist. In 2001, at the age of only 31, she was awarded Spain’s National Dance Prize in recognition of her contribution to flamenco’s expressive possibilities, and last year she was given the Spanish Gold Medal for Fine Arts, which honors her place among flamenco’s great figures.
Her Company premiered its first show, Eva (1998), at Seville’s Flamenco Biennal. It has been followed by another dozen award-winning dance pieces in which Yerbabuena’s choreography is set to original live music by Paco Jarana, acclaimed guitarist, composer and musical director. The shows are also known for the quality of cantaores, or flamenco singers, and musicians who collaborate with the Company, and Eva’s art direction.
Among recent work, Apariencias or On Stage: Appearances (2016) earned two nominations for the 2017 National Dance Awards awarded by British critics. The show includes her exploration of the soleá musical form, which is considered a tour de force. The following piece, Carne y Hueso, or Skin and Bone (2017), offers an abstract series of choreographies.
Close working collaborations outside flamenco, in particular a friendship with Pina Bausch, have influenced Yerbabuena’s work; she has appeared in films by Mike Figgis and Carlos Saura and co-choreographed with Carolyn Carson. This year, she is working on a show focused on traditional Japanese musical culture to be premiered in the summer. She also loves to teach, using her own method for flamenco dance classes, and to help guide the careers of younger artists.

ARTURO SANDOVAL A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of the jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. He is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time; and has been seen by millions at the Oscars, the Grammy Awards and the Billboard Awards. Sandoval has been awarded 10 Grammy Awards and has been nominated 19 times. He is also the recipient of six Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award; the latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, For Love or Country, starring Andy Garcia as Arturo. His two latest Grammy award-winning albums, Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You) and Tango Como yo te siento, are now available worldwide. Arturo Sandoval’s newest CD with co-headliner Jorge Calandrelli is Eternamente Manzanero. A true labor of love, the album features the music of revered Mexican romantic pianist/ singer/songwriter Armando Manzanero and is a fresh, modern and pleasant take on his beautiful bolero music. In 2014, a new book was released chronicling Sandoval’s relationship with Dizzy Gillespie entitled Dizzy Gillespie: The Man Who Changed My Life: From the Memoirs of Arturo Sandoval. Arturo is the 2013 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the 2016 honorary doctorate recipient in fine arts from the University of Notre Dame.
Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy Awardwinning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences throughout the world. Sandoval is also a renowned classical musician, performing regularly with the leading symphony orchestras from around the world. He recorded John Williams’ Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra with the London Symphony Orchestra; and his own composition, Concerto for Trumpet

and Orchestra, can be heard on Arturo Sandoval: The Classical Album. His classical artistry has earned him the respect and admiration from the most prestigious conductors, composers and symphony orchestras worldwide. Sandoval’s versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Josh Groban, Tony Bennett, Bill Conti and Stan Getz to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys, amongst many others. He has performed with John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra, and at the Super Bowl with Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle. Arturo Sandoval’s compositions can also be heard in movies, including 1001 to 1 starring Beau Bridges; At Middleton starring Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga; Dave Grusin’s soundtrack for Havana and Random Hearts; the Mambo Kings soundtrack with his Grammy-nominated composition, “Mambo Caliente”; the soundtrack of The Perez Family, 61, Mr. Wrong; the documentary Oscar; and The Family Fuentes, among others. Sandoval was commissioned by The Kennedy Center to compose music for ballets Pepito’s Story, Soul Possessed, Oman...O Man! and The Chocolate Hot Nutcracker, choreographed by Debbie Allen. Arturo Sandoval reaches beyond the scope of mere effort. His struggles, while living in Cuba and since his defection, have given him more energy and strength, urging him to accomplish and surpass his childhood dreams. He desires nothing more than to share his gift with others who feel the same intense adoration for music as he does. One frequently speaks of Arturo Sandoval’s virtuoso technical ability and his specialty in high notes; but he who has seen him on the piano, lyrically improvising a ballad, or has had the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of his music through his compositions — from the most straight-ahead jazz, Latin jazz or classical — knows that Arturo Sandoval is one of the most brilliant, multifaceted and renowned musicians of our time. ABOUT THE ARTISTS George Kahumoku Jr. lives on Maui with his wife, Nancy, maintaining their 3-acre farm, growing fruits and vegetables, dry-land taro (for his famous home-made poi) and tending goats, chickens, ducks and miniature horses. With over 25 solo, collaborative and compilation CDs to his name, George celebrates over 14 years of his famed weekly Slack Key Show on Maui, which has produced four Grammy-winning CDs. He has won multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards (Hawai’i’s Grammy), including Best Christmas CD in 2017. He founded the Institute of Hawaiian Music at the University of Hawai’i Maui College to preserve the legacy of Hawaiian music and prepare the next generation for music careers. A renowned story-teller, George collaborated on two books with longtime friend Paul Konwiser to capture his hilarious, entertaining on-stage stories. This project led to his film biography, Seeds of Aloha. For the past 15 years, George Kahumoku Jr.’s Annual Maui Slack Key Guitar and ‘Ukulele Workshop has been creating one of the great musical learning experiences on the Islands. It embodies George’s belief in sharing, celebrating and perpetuating the unique music and culture of Hawai’i. www.kahumoku.com
Led Kaapana grew up in a family of musicians in Kalapana, in the southernmost district of the Hawai’i Island. His teachers included his mother, Mama Tina Kaapana, from whom he learned to sing leo ki’eki’e (Hawaiian falsetto singing) and his uncle, Fred Punahoa. “We didn’t have electricity, no television, not even much radio,” says Kaapana. “So we entertained ourselves. You could go to any house and everybody was playing music.” Throughout his career, Led has dedicated himself to perpetuating the traditional style and repertoire of his home, beginning in his teens with the group Hui ‘Ohana, which produced 14 best-selling albums and became a key figure in the resurgence of traditional Hawaiian culture and music during the 1970s. Launching a solo career in 1983, Kaapana has continued to garner acclaim for his improvisational melodies and falsetto

vocals. In 2011, he was awarded a NEA National Heritage Fellowship. Recognition by his peers earned Led four Grammy nominations in his own right and three wins on slack key compilations. He has won multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, including Best ‘Ukulele CD in 2017 and Favorite Entertainer of the Year in 2009. www.ledkaapana.com
Jeff Peterson was born on the island of Maui and grew up on a ranch on the slopes of the Haleakala volcano, where he was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music and to guitar by his father, a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). At an early age, he began to pick up influences from such Hawai’i slack key greats as the Gabby Pahinui Band, Leonard Kwan and Sonny Chillingworth; and went on to explore a wide variety of musical genres and to study jazz and classical guitar. Five of Jeff’s songs are featured in the award-winning George Clooney film, The Descendants. Jeff was featured on two Grammy-winning CDs: Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2, which won the first-ever Grammy Award for best Hawaiian recording; and in 2010, George Kahumoku’s Masters of Slack Key Guitar vol. 2. He has recorded eight solo CDs to date, winning Best Instrumental Album in 2017 and Best Slack Key Album at the 2016 and 2014 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, as well as a Grammy nomination. His Concerto for Slack Key Guitar and Orchestra: Malama ‘Aina premiered in 2016 with Raleigh Chamber Orchestra. Jeff has also worked with such artists as Eric Clapton, James Galway and Michael Feinstein. This year, Jeff was awarded a Native Arts & Cultures Foundation Fellowship, as well as garnering recognition from the First People’s Fund. Artist Representation: Pasifika Artists Network Karen A. STORM LARGE Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day.
Storm spent the ’90s singing in clubs throughout San Francisco. Tired of the club scene, she moved to Portland to pursue a new career as a chef, but a last-minute cancellation in 2002 at Dante’s, a club in Portland, turned into a standing Wednesday night engagement for Storm and her new band, The Balls. It wasn’t long before Storm had a cult-like following in Portland, and a renewed singing career that was soon to be launched onto the international stage. Highlights of the 2017–18 season include debuts with the San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Vancouver, Jacksonville and RTÉ National Symphonies, as well as return engagements with the Houston, Toronto and Toledo Symphonies. Storm and her band, Le Bonheur, continue to tour concert halls across the country. The 2016–17 season included debuts with the Atlanta, Baltimore, and BBC Symphony Orchestras, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, as well as return engagements with National Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Recent highlights include engagements with the New York Pops, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Memphis Symphony, and the Knights, as well as performances at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. She joined Michael Feinstein as special guest on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Popular Song series, as well as with Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, and the Pasadena Pops.
Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally, and she was featured on their CD, Get Happy. Storm has also sung with Grammy winner k.d. lang, pianist Kirill Gerstein, punk rocker John Doe, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton.
Storm debuted with the Oregon Symphony in 2010, and has returned for sold-out performances each year thereafter. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2013, singing Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Detroit Symphony as part of the Spring for Music festival. The NY Times called her “sensational,” and the classical music world instantly had a new star.
18 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
In 2007, Storm starred in Portland Center Stage’s production of Cabaret with Wade McCollum. The show was a smash hit, earning Large glowing reviews. Her next endeavor, the autobiographical musical memoir, Crazy Enough, played to packed houses in 2009 during its unprecedented 21-week sold-out run in Portland. Storm went on to perform a cabaret version of the show to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival in Australia and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir, Crazy Enough, was released by Simon and Schuster in 2012. It was named Oprah’s Book of the Week and was awarded the 2013 Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. Storm is featured in Rid of Me, a film by Portlander James Westby, starring Katie O’Grady and Theresa Russell. In 2010, she starred at the Mark Taper Forum with Katey Sagal and Michael McKean in Jerry Zak’s production of Harps and Angels, a musical featuring the work of Randy Newman. In the fall of 2014, Storm and Le Bonheur released a record designed to capture their sublime and subversive interpretations of The Great American Songbook. Entitled simply Le Bonheur and released on Pink Martini’s Heinz Records, the recording is a collection of tortured and titillating love songs: beautiful, familiar, yet twisted … much like the lady herself. They also support our ArtsReach programs provided to the schools at little or no cost and “family-friendly” programming on stage. The Barclay’s mission also embraces making its beautiful facilities available to diverse community organizations, UCI, and other educational institutions. Thank you to all of our generous donors listed here for their contributions during the previous 12 months! If you would like to join the ranks of those who make it all possible at the Barclay, you may make a donation online at www.thebarclay.org or call 949.854.4607. PUBLIC PARTNERS
