WAIPUNA In a few short years, Waipuna has leaped to the forefront of Hawaiian contemporary music. Winner of seven Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards (Hawai‘i’s “Grammy”), Waipuna is an exciting collaboration of three talented individuals: Kale Hannahs, Matthew Sproat and David Kamakahi, all hailing from celebrated Hawaiian musical families. Their eclectic musical backgrounds, yet similar tastes, have led to their unique sound that one critic has dubbed “neo-traditionalist” —possessing authentic roots with contemporary energy, sensibility and joy. Their music mixes Hawaiian classics and original songs in an upbeat style all their own. In 2009, after the release of their critically acclaimed first album, Mana‘o Pili, Kale and Matt, then a duo, began touring throughout Hawaiʻi, Japan and the continental U.S. David joined them on their sophomore release, E Ho’i Mai, a collection of songs that pays tribute to their roots and recognizes the people who have helped guide them. The band officially became a trio by the time its members reached the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards ceremony in 2012, where they received three awards: Group of the Year, Island Contemporary and Single of the Year. They went on to win the Single of the Year award again in 2013; garnered two awards in 2014 for their 7-track EP, Napili; and received one award in 2015 for their CD, E Mau Ke Aloha. Kale, Matt and David bring a fresh and contemporary energy to Hawaiian classics and to the island sound, preserving tradition while moving forward. Hawaiian heritage is thriving, and Waipuna, which means “spring waters” (i.e., resource, life force), reflects both the traditions passed forward from the previous generations and the transformations that keep the culture alive for the generations to come.

Kale Hannahs (Bass & Vocals) is a 1996 graduate of the Kamehameha Schools. In 2002, he graduated from the University of Hawai’i with a degree in Hawaiian studies with an emphasis on history. At the age of 30 he is considered a veteran of the music scene, earning a reputation as a steady bass player and vocalist. Kale has played and recorded with many of Hawai’i’s talented musicians and was a founding member of the award-winning group, ‘Ale’a.

Matthew Kawaiola Sproat (Guitar & Vocals) was born and raised in Hau’ula, Oahu, but hails from the famous Sproat family from North Kohala on the Big Island. In 2003, Matt won the Big Island falsetto competition. He has studied and performed with some of the best musicians in Hawai’i and has spent the past fifteen years mastering his craft. David Kamakahi (‘Ukulele, Guitar & Vocals) started playing ‘ukulele at the age of 15, studying the stylings of the great ‘ukulele master and mentor, Eddie Kamae, and other musicians such as Peter Moon, Troy Fernandez and Led Kaapana. His natural talent rapidly enabled him to develop an exceptionally clean, polished and proficient technique. He has recorded two albums with his late father, Dennis Kamakahi, under producer George Winston for Dancing Cat Records. Winner of the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Best Contemporary Album in 2005, he was featured with his father in the Walt Disney animated film, Lilo and Stitch 2, on the song, “Always,” which was nominated for a Grammy in 2007. David founded his own record label, Trick Bag Records, and released his second solo album, Shine, in 2009. He joined Waipuna in 2012. David performs regularly at George Kahumoku’s Slack Key Show. He has toured Japan, the continental U.S. and throughout Hawai‘i.

GUEST ARTISTS Jeff Peterson

David “Kawika” Kahiapo

Guitar virtuoso, Jeff Peterson, is a fast-rising star of the next generation of slack key guitar players. A two-time Grammy winner, Jeff is stretching the art of slack key, using the style’s open tunings to explore multiple genres. His virtuosity shines through in his traditional slack key and also in jazz, classical, big band tunes and standards. Five of Jeff’s songs are featured in the award-winning George Clooney film, The Descendants. Jeff was featured on two Grammy-winning recordings: Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2, which won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Hawaiian Music Album; and Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2 in 2010. He was honored with two Grammy nominations: one for his solo CD, Maui on My Mind and one for his collaboration with Amy Hanaiali‘i, Amy Hanaiali‘i and Slack Key Masters of Hawai’i. Born on the island of Maui, Jeff grew up on the slopes of the Haleakala volcano, where he was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music and to the guitar by his father, a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) at the Haleakala Ranch. At an early age, he was influenced by such Hawai‘i slack key greats as the Gabby Pahinui Band, Leonard Kwan and Sonny Chillingworth. As he began studying on his own, his interests broadened and he delved into a wide variety of musical genres which incorporate the guitar. He went on to study jazz and classical guitar. Jeff has recorded six solo CDs to date. In 2014, his latest release, Slack Key Travels, won the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Best Slack Key Album; and in 2010, he garnered the same distinction for Maui on My Mind, which also earned a Grammy nomination. As a performer, Jeff has worked with a wide range of artists including Eric Clapton, Led Kaapana, James Galway, Michael Feinstein, Benjamin Verdery, and the Honolulu Symphony, among others.

Born on the windward side of O`ahu, Kawika finds a neverending source of inspiration in the breathtaking Ko`olau mountain range — lush, green valleys and the magnificent ocean views. His interest in music began at an early age, when, inspired by his father, he spent many hours alone, practicing guitar. Some of his fondest memories are of the “garage” jam sessions, when “Pops” Gabby Pahinui would show up at his house to play, further igniting his passion for ki-ho`alu, slack key guitar. At age 17, Kawika entered the professional music scene and has remained a regular at slack key festivals. He has contributed to more than 84 recording projects and has worked with numerous artists such as Jack Johnson, Melveen Leed, Brother Noland, Na Leo Pilimehana, Native Hawaiian Band, Cyri Pahinui, Amy Hanaiali‘i Gilliom, Dennis Kamakahi, Daniel Ho, Paula Fuga and Walt Keale. In 2015, Kawika’s solo release, Ku‘u ‘Āina Aloha, was honored with a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Island Music Album of the Year; his other solo release, Ho‘omaluhia, received the award for Slack Key Album of the Year. Kawika is featured on George Kahumoku’s compilation CD, Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2, which won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Hawaiian Music Album. As part of the band, Kaukahi, he won three Nā Hōkū awards in 2007, including one for Song of the Year for his title composition, “Life in These Islands.” A recording artist and an ordained minister, Kawika also serves on various boards, including the Kokua Hawai’i Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports environmental education in schools and in the Hawaiian communities; and on PBS Hawai‘i, for whom he composed a theme song. “Love for the islands, its people, `ohana and Ke Akua (God), is what inspires me, while staying committed to perpetuating ‘true’ Hawaiian music, the culture and the art of ki-ho`alu.”

RUN RIVER NORTH In the course of several months, Run River North went from playing a handful of hometown shows in Los Angeles to performing to an audience of millions on the late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! It was an explosive trajectory for the sextet, whose uplifting anthems march to the beat of drums, jangling guitars and a rapturous string section. The rapid ascent from obscurity launched a new chapter for the band (then called Monsters Calling Home), whose fulllength self-titled debut ventures further into effervescent rock anchored with a down-home aesthetic. The songs on Run River North ebb and flow with optimism, traversing emotional and musical landscapes woven into the strings duo of Daniel Chae and Jennifer Rim, alongside the galloping rhythm section of bassist Joe Chun, keyboardist Sally Kang and drummer John Chong. Together their voices coalesce as one, a chorus calling out with a gentle urgency. The music of Run River North explores the ever-shifting search for self, from the energetic indie-rock interludes to the lonesome guitar strums, always asking the question: Is home a place or is it the people in your life? “We’re not a posh, polished pop sound,” says Alex Hwang, Run River North’s singer/songwriter. “We have stories we want to tell and they take a little more time. After all, the journey to find your place is a long one, it’s an ongoing, evolving adventure.” The personal stories of the band members are as compelling as the songs themselves. Hwang and his band mates all came from families who moved to Southern California from Asia, and he says that the album reflects their shared search for a sense of home. “The immigrant experience is unique, but our songs also address that universal struggle for identity,” Hwang says. “We wanted to write about it and share the stories about being dashAmerican.” Hwang’s lyrics often reflect the earliest folk heroes, whose narratives broach themes of hope, struggle, and the courage to carry on. “For immigrants who come here whose degrees don’t work here and they don’t speak the language, many have worked at liquor stores or laundromats, which a lot of our families did. Then you raise kids who grow up here who look at their American friends and wonder why 8 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

they don’t have those kinds of lives. The song “Monsters Calling Home” is about immigrant parents and their search to make the ‘American Dream’ happen.” The bombastic chords of the song hold up Hwang’s powerful voice, relaying the hardships of “digging for worth under a foreign sun.” On “Growing Up,” acoustic strums commingle with sweeping violins, as Hwang sings about a man who realizes that “home is who you give your love to and your time to.” That somber track “Lying Beast” is a classic prodigal son story, based on a melody from an ancient Korean folk song, about unrequited love between a couple on a mountain pass. “It has [a] message of longing for something that you think is home, but you’re not sure how to handle it when you see it,” Hwang says. The overlap of Asian and American folk is subtle, reflecting the hyphenated existence of the band members. “We didn’t want to be a K-Pop band; they do it so well, but we’d be terrible at it,” Hwang jokes. Like so many adventures, the troupe’s own journey began in a car. In 2012, the cash-strapped band decided that instead of expensive studio space, they would record a song entirely inside of their Hondas. “In the beginning,” says Alex Hwang, “we were recording a song every month and making a video for each song. Then we thought, ‘what would happen if we recorded an entire song in our cars?’” The simple experiment filmed in those cramped environs became a viral sensation, as their song “Fight to Keep” spread across the Internet. The people at Honda noticed and invited the band to perform at the executive offices. Then, the truth emerged. Instead of playing for Honda, they were booked as the musical guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “We had no idea,” Hwang says. “We thought that we would just play for Honda executives. It was surreal, since we were going on in two hours, we couldn’t even process how to be nervous, so we just played the best we could.” The surprise performance charted a new course for the band. From their gritty beginnings on tour — where Hwang says they’d sell burned CDs and crash at the homes of gracious audience members — to now selling out Los Angeles’ legendary venue, The Troubadour. Riding the tide of newfound notoriety, Hwang and the band recorded their self-titled debut with producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Built to Spill, Band of Horses), which burgeons with richly layered harmonies, dynamic instrumentation, and evocative storytelling. About working with Ek, drummer Chong says, “he thinks outside the box with all his projects. I love how he allows the artist to be really creative with structures, chord choices, metric changes, etc.” “A common thread between his records is that you come away with a strong sense of feeling,” continues band member Chae. Recording the album in Seattle, Hwang jokes, “so curious and excited to see how our songs and band will grow… Run River North(west).” Run River North’s self-titled debut was released in 2014 via Nettwerk Records.
