WELCOME Small hall. BIG TALENT.
We’ve chosen this theme this season to remind our audiences and ourselves of the very special experience that Cheng Hall provides. Named over two decades ago for philanthropists, George and Arlene Cheng, their children continue with significant support of the theatre’s efforts. In fact, Jennifer Cheng was recently elected as chair of the Barclay’s board of directors. The hall was originally designed with some very specific criteria in mind. Superb acoustics was certainly one of them. In terms of sightlines, no seat could be out of range of eye contact with a performer on stage. That’s how the intimate seating capacity of 750 seats was established. And yet, the stage and production facilities are quite sophisticated, enabling the theatre to produce challenging creative work.

As the season progresses, I’ll be writing more about what makes the Barclay special. Please enjoy tonight’s U.S. debut of Sydney Dance. And, we hope you’ll join us again soon.

Text Samuel Webster
A NOTE FROM CHOREOGRAPHER RAFAEL BONACHELA I am always fascinated by the interactions between people, and as I spend time in the studio with the dancers, I can’t help but see them as a microcosm of broader human interactions. As a group, they spend so much time together that their relationships and interactions at times seem to be a whole world in itself. During the creative development phase of 2 One Another, I invited poet and writer Samuel Webster into the studio and asked him to write instinctively and with immediacy in response to what he was observing. I then used those phrases and sentences as a basis for tasks and explorations for creating movement. The text that Samuel created is very beautiful and full of love and emotion, and I sought to create movement that explored all those intensities of human interaction. The outcome of the dance/text process is absorbed into the whole and apparent only in an abstracted manner through the inclusion of some of the phrases into the score. The feel of the piece, for me, is about creating a world of layers, both visual and metaphorical. Design and music are an integral part of creating this world and again were completed through an iterative process that was reflective of the very idea of 2 One Another — that of the individual reacting and being stimulated by others and the group. Reference material was contributed and shared between the entire creative team, and it has been a delight to build a work that intersects art forms and processes so thoroughly. I am very excited to be sharing this work with you. I would like to thank my creative collaborators and the extraordinary dancers who travel on this journey with me.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
MEET THE DANCERS
Rafael Bonachela Rafael Bonachela was born in Barcelona where he began his early dance training before moving to London; and in 1992, joined the legendary Rambert Dance Company. He remained with Rambert as a dancer and associate choreographer until 2006, at which time he successfully set up the Bonachela Dance Company (BDC) to concentrate on the rapid rise of his choreographic career. As a choreographer, Rafael has been commissioned to mount works for Candoco, George Piper Dances, ITDANSA Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, Transitions Dance Company, and Dance Works Rotterdam, among others. The year 2008 saw the premiere of Bonachela’s first fulllength production, 360°, for Sydney Dance Company. Less than six months later, he was appointed artistic director, making headlines around the dance world. His vision for the Company embraces a guiding principle that has seen the repertoire grow with the addition of commissioned dance works from Australian and visiting international guest choreographers. The premiere works are often programmed alongside Rafael’s own creations, ensuring diversity for audiences and providing much sought-after opportunities for his remarkable ensemble of dancers to be exposed to the work of some of the most in-demand choreographers of our time. Internationally recognized for his talent, Rafael Bonachela has worked not only with contemporary dance at the highest level, but also with artists from popular culture, such as Kylie Minogue and Tina Turner. Such collaborative efforts reflect the inspiration he finds in today’s cultural landscape. Since the premiere of 360°, Rafael has created several pieces for Sydney Dance Company including we unfold (2009), 6 Breaths (2010), LANDforms (2011), 2 One Another (2012), Project Rameau (2012), and Emergence (2013). In addition, he has remounted outstanding repertoire from BDC such as Soledad and Irony of Fate (2010), and The Land of Yes & The Land of No (2011). Rafael was named one of Sydney Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People in 2012 for his efforts to popularize dance, since taking on the job of artistic director of Sydney Dance Company and as curator of Australia’s international festival of contemporary dance, Spring Dance, at the Sydney Opera House. In February 2013, Rafael was honored with an Order of Isabella the Catholic: Officer’s Cross from the Spanish Government.
