El Paso is not a terribly fashion forward city... For now. However, more and more younger people seem to be leaving the city and returning with innovative ideas and bringing back more of the latest trends back to El Paso. Many of these people have become teachers in school classes involving newer technologies and vocational programs, such as the ones offered at CCTE. Jacob Alaniz set out to the fashion design program. Three Rocket seniors are now in their second year of the class: Marcy Alderete, Ruby Alvarado, and Grace Muus; each working on their own clothing line to be displayed at the annual fashion show at the tech center. This year the self-proclaim Irvin Print Media Program changed gears in their news coverage ideas and decided to start theming their issues. Theming the issues was a twofold plan to not only increase the reader rate of the newspaper but also to deliver information and news in a way that would interest the student body as well. “I feel that not only going digital but also starting with something the kids like [fashion] will help us make enough waves to start coming back into the people’s collective consciences. You walk the halls and the only people who really know the name of the paper and the yearbook or that they even exist are Irvin alumni teachers or those who legitimately love journalism,” said Advanced Journalism Advisor Isaac Medina The photography talent
amongst the journalism classes is by far at its highest this year and we can only hope that starting with images will get people hooked on the story as well. “From a design perspective, it’s way different than just a regular newspaper. The Newspaper is boring and the magazine is more of a cultural thing.” Said senior photographer Jacob Alaniz Although the “NewsMagazine” has faced financial and various other struggles the staff and advisor still strive to make it something that can be a becon to not only the school but the community as well. “This is the 21st century, and if the district and my superiors wants me to teach them to understand the world they are inheriting after graduation, then the program and its practices need to match up,” said Medina.
