ABOUT THE RESEARCH

RESEARCH & INVENTORY

BALI COLLECTION WHY BALI ? Bali arguably is one of the very few islands which has a diverse collection of hotel typologies and styles, set in two major natural settings of mountains and seas. And to begin the journey of learning how to design a hotel, it might be as easy as by hovering over the island of god and observing its hotel collection.

• The research will focus on building inventory/collection of hotel typologies in Bali • The parameters / indicators of inventory will include building typology/footprint, natural setting (beachfront, mountain view), architectural style, general data (no of keys, room size, price) • The research is important as it is set to become a guide book/quick reference to get hotel design information. • It would be also very useful for planner to get a quick reference for building footprint & hotel casetudies.

TIME AND SCHEDULE • To be decided and discussed later. • The research can be started in June • Time needed would be most likely: 20 hours research (collecting information & references), 60 hours building inventory & analysis • The research can be later extended further...depending on office need OUTCOME The outcome will be • a set of inventory in a form of booklet which can be shared across different office and even developed further by all offices.

MASLOW’S PYRAMID

Hierarchy of human needs in hospitality

THE PYRAMID

Self-Actualization

Maslow’s Pyramid is a graphic representation of his hierarchy of needs in human development. His theory holds that human beings work to fulfill their needs starting from the most fundamental of needs to those which give individuals a sense of attainment.

Esteem

The needs, starting at the base with item 1, are summarized below:

Realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences.

Achievement, mastery, independence, status, dominance, prestige, self-respect, respect from others.

Love & Belonging

Friendship, intimacy, affection and love, from work group, family, friends, romantic relationships.

1. Physiological Needs: Basic survival needs such as food, shelter, sleep. 2. Safety Needs: A sense of security and order.

Safety

3. Love and Belonging Needs: Social connection, family, and friendships.

Physiological

4. Esteem Needs: Independence, accomplishment, respect.

Protection from elements, security, order, law, stability, freedom from fear.

Biological and Physiological needs air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sleep.

5. Self-actualization Needs: Personal growth and fulfillment.

HIERARCHY OF RETURN ON INVESTMENT

The hierarchy can also be used as a framework for understanding the financial implications of the proposal. When the ‘base’ needs of shelter, security and belonging are met they will provide the largest revenue streams. The amenities proposed for the uppermost needs in the pyramid will provide the lowest returns but help to drive revenues by differentiating the resort from its competitors.

Maslow Philanthropy

Investments may not be profitable but serve as a unique selling point in support the overall development.

Niche revenue Smaller revenues, limited in scope.

Self-Actualization

Esteem

Additional revenue Lower revenue stream but steady source of income.

Ongoing revenue

Provides steady revenue income for overall development over time.

Financial foundation

Large, immediate returns, provides the financial foundation for the overall development.

HIERARCHY OF DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES

Through several brainstorming sessions WATG explored a wide variety of potential uses for the available plots. These ideas were refined and categorized into one of the five needs of the pyramid according to Maslow’s hierar

THE MENJANGAN

The idea behind The Menjangan was - like all good ideas - simple: to create the perfect nature retreat located in one of the least-visited but most beautiful parts of the wonderful island of Bali. The concept was to work in harmony with nature to establish the ultimate hideaway, an intimate boutique resort where guests can escape the outside world and share the natural beauties of Bali with their partners, families and friends.

The resort is relaxed, casual and quiet, with the emphasis very much on restoring calm and simplicity to stressed minds and bodies. Time to reflect, appreciate the true values in life and get back to basics, taking time to appreciate the sound of birdsong, the whisper of trees in the ocean breeze and the always surprising delights of marine life which can be witnessed while snorkeling or diving.
