Dear Parents and Carers,
T
he students are coping really well with the summer exams. Next week they have more exciting activities to look forward to: a visit from The Bug Man and all his creepy crawlies (Year 7), an assembly and some creative writing workshops led by the author James Dawson (Year 9).
We have recently appointed a peripatetic music teacher of drums, Mr Glaser. He introduces himself below: “I am a Nottingham born Drummer and Percussionist. I moved to London in 2010 to study Jazz at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Graduating in 2014 with a first Class Honours degree, I now perform throughout London and the UK in a variety of ensembles and musical settings. I have a lot of experience performing traditional Jazz, contemporary music, in big bands and duo contexts, recording work, pop and commercial music and I have performed at notable venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, Kings Place, The Vortex and the 606. I have worked with artists such as Dame Cleo Lane, Ian Shaw, Julian Joseph and the London Jazz Orchestra, and have supported bands such as Public Enemy and Basement Jaxx.”

On Tuesday 30th June some of our students are performing at the ARK Music Gala at the Barbican in Central London. On Wednesday 8th July we have a PE Awards evening – further details to follow. On 15th and 16th July we are hosting our annual Art Exhibition at 6.15pm (come and browse the art work and enjoy some tasty snacks), followed by our summer production, Oliver Twist, at 7pm. On Monday 20th July at 6pm the Year 9s have their End of Key Stage 3 Awards Assembly, followed by refreshments. All parents and carers are warmly invited. On Tuesday 21st July in the morning we have the Year 7 and 8 Awards Assemblies; further details and timings to follow.

We would like to invite you to our upcoming Literacy parent workshop being held at Isaac Newton Academy from 6pm7pm on Wednesday the 17th June. In the workshop we will be sharing information that will help you to understand how Literacy is taught in the Secondary School and offer advice on how best to support your child with developing their Literacy skills in English and across the Curriculum. SAVE THE DATE
Year 9 End of Key Stage 3 Awards Ceremony Monday 20th July 6.00-7.00pm We are holding a special awards ceremony for Year 9s to mark the end of Key Stage 3. Students will go home at the end of the school day and return to school at 5.45pm, dressed formally in their finest outfits, to meet with their tutors, co tutors and tutor groups in preparation for the ceremony. The awards ceremony will commence at 6.00pm. We would like every student to be represented by a parent/carer at the ceremony. Tickets will be distributed to students in the week beginning 6th July. Parents/carers and students are invited to stay for refreshments at the end of the ceremony. Year 9 students will work from home on 21st July, the last day of term. Please note that awards assemblies for Year 7 and 8 students will take place on Tuesday 21st July and all Year 7 and 8 are expected to attend school on this day.

Teentech Final Update The Teentech finals is approaching fast and the boys have been working hard on completing their project ready for the finals at the Royal Society on the 22nd June. Ian Wilson, Head of the Engineering faculty at Coventry University, came in last week and ran a workshop with the boys about how to improve their marketing skills and presentation tactics for the finals. He was really impressed with their STeye idea and was astounded by the boys’ innovative idea at such a young age. Let’s hope it is enough for them to win the Teentech Finals! Miss Ahmed and Miss Rudd (STEM TEAM)
Saturday Stretch Workshop Every month at INA we invite students from university to deliver workshops for our students. We have an upcoming session on Law on Saturday 27th June. YEAR 8 TABLE TENNIS V WOODBRIDGE
On Thursday 21st May INA hosted our Year 8 Table Tennis annual tournament against Woodbridge High School. Woodbridge every year has really strong and experienced Table Tennis players. INA showed great perseverance throughout the tournament and represented the school excellently. With 18 players in the tournament it was pleasing to see that both finalists were from INA: Daniyaal Anjum and Esher Bahara both battled superbly in the final, with Esher just edging ahead to take the medal. A mention must go to the whole Table Tennis Squad who competed excellently: Esher Bahara, Ekonkar Deerhe, Akhil Pillai, Jonah Robinson, Mohammad Kothia, Anil Rattu, Brett Butler, Omar Gill, Daniyaal Anjum and Aasif Rahman.
YEAR 8 ROUNDERS RALLY
INA Year 8 Rounders Team played with fantastic determination and focus on Tuesday evening at Wanstead. Despite conceding to Ursuline and Seven Kings, the team showed great tactical play and amazing team spirit throughout.

Maya Angelou (1928- 2014) is one of the world’s greatest poets and a highly influential female role model. With the publication of her first autobiography in ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’, Angelou openly and honestly shared huge parts of her personal life. She bravely bared her soul and her personal history in this book, and in six subsequent autobiographies, telling of a lifetime full of highs and lows. Honesty Being truthful and sincere and approaching every situation with good intentions. Saying what you think and know is true, while respecting others. Honesty means being trustworthy, loyal and fair. Behaviours Taking a conscious decision never to lie, being trust worthy, being able to admit to mistakes, being able to share problems and emotions, being able to think about and recognise the consequences of your actions. Top tips Students Be honest with yourself. Acknowledge your own strengths and areas for development. Be aware of who your real friends are, the ones who you can trust and be open with. Do the ‘right’ thing even when no one is watching. Be honest about your learning challenges. Tell your teacher if you are confused by the L.O. or don’t understand the I/L. Put your hand up to ask for clarification when you need it. Parents Discuss the importance of honesty with your son/daughter, sharing times and situations where your honesty was tested and how you responded. Discuss what you learned from this experience. e have been making the most of the fabulous weather this week and whilst it is lovely to have the sun shining we do want to encourage our children to stay safe in the sun. We have talked in assembly and in class about the importance of drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated. Please make sure that your child has their water bottle with them every day. We are happy for your child to have sun cream with them at school as long as it is labelled clearly. If you feel that they are responsible enough to manage the application of the cream independently, they can keep the cream in their tray. If however you feel this would not be the best approach for your child, then please drop your cream off at the main reception, again ensuring that it is labelled. Some sun creams last for 24 hours and it would be a wise approach to apply some cream on your child before they come to school.

Cycle/Scooter Helmet Design Competition Thank you to all of those children who brought their cycle/ scooter helmet designs in for the Healthy Schools competition. The winner will be announced in next week’s newsletter. The winning child will be presented with their prize in next week’s assembly.

Headteacher’s Lunch Well done to the following pupils who have been nominated for the Headteacher’s Lunch on the Thursday after the half term, on Thursday 4th June. An invitation will be given to the children during our Friday Celebration and Awards Assembly:
Every half term we award two children from each class the honour of being the class ambassador. Each class teacher has chosen two children from their class to represent them over the course of the half term. Their role includes helping children in the playground, welcoming visitors to their class and explaining some of their learning to them, along with helping the staff with other special jobs. A purple pin badge will be presented to the children in assembly which will need to be worn on their uniform every day. Certificates will be given to the children who have represented their class last half term and we thank them for their work in their role.

"We build too many walls and not enough bridges.” Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner.
There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel above Week commencing 15th June – Discovery Discovery Displaying habits of curiosity, open-mindedness, enthusiasm, energy, noticing, imagining and creativity. At home and school: As the children will soon be moving into Year 1, it is important that they demonstrate how to be a good Isaac Newton ambassador and citizen by role-modelling excellent BRIDGES habits every day. •
Encourage your child to use their imagination by making up stories together, or suggesting ways in which they could change parts of a story they know well: either change the gender of the characters, have them go on a different adventure or choose a different ending etc.

Ask questions like ‘I wonder what would happen if…?’ or ‘What do you think might happen if?’ or ‘Why do you think…?’ These types of deeper questions will encourage the children to use their creativity and imagination more fully.

The children are creating superheroes at the moment; this is a great topic as it allows your child to really use their imagination and creativity through the invention of characters. If your child creates or draws a superhero, try to ask questions that will really help them deepen their thinking, about the types of powers their character has and why their power would be useful.

Parent Information Board Labelling of Clothes Now that the children get changed in school for PE lessons, we have noticed that an increased number of clothing items are getting mixed up, lost and sometimes going home with the wrong children. We are lucky to have such lovely parents who quickly notice and return items that don’t belong to their child. To help us get the right items back to everyone, please make sure every item of clothing is labelled with your child’s name. Thank you!

Please remember to bring your child’s ‘guided reading’ book back on the correct day. Your child also has home record book for you to write your comments about his/ her reading and progress. You could also include any extension activities that you may have done with the book too. Thank you for your support. If in the rare event a book is lost or damaged, we will ask parents/ carers to pay for the cost of replacing the book.
We are delighted to have Ms Hamid join our team; she will be teaching Maxwell class until the end of term alongside Ms Curley. In September she will be one of our Reception class teachers, so she is busy familiarising herself with all of our routines in preparation. I am sure you will join me in welcoming her to Isaac Newton Academy Primary.
