Isaac libraries launch program to grow children’s love of literacy ‘Row, row, row your boat’ and ‘If you’re happy and you know it’ were big hits with more than 300 mums, dads, carers, and children at the launch of First 5 Forever across Isaac Libraries, on Wednesday February 3.

CEO Rod Ferguson said First 5 Forever program aims to help parents and carers give their children the best start to life with literacy.

“Our libraries support parents and caregivers to give children from birth to five years old in our communities the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes,” he said.

Children’s Library Services Coordinator Toni Markcrow said it was exciting to bring the state-wide program to Isaac libraries.

“Reading 10,000 books to children before they turn five, just three books a day, will have them ready for the start of their school journey.”

“It was a great morning and so wonderful to see so many parents eager to find out how they can help their children.”

The First 5 Forever family literacy initiative is proudly supported by Queensland Government, State Library of Queensland and delivered in partnership with Isaac Regional Council.

Wet wipes blocking the flow of region’s sewerage system Isaac Regional Council is urging residents to remember the three P’s this year to help ease the strain on the region’s sewerage system.

Wet wipes and other ‘flushable’ toiletry products wreak havoc on sewerage systems with blockages a common, and increasing problem.

Council is asking homeowners to stick to sending the three P’s – pee, poo and paper – down the toilet, and dispose of all other products in the bin.

Wet wipes are very stretchy and do not disintegrate the way toilet paper does.

This leads to blockages in both the pipe network and in the equipment at the region’s sewer treatment plants.

The issue is a state-wide concern with approximately 120 tonnes of wet wipes pulled from the sewerage network annually, which if stretched end to end would span the distance between Australia and New Zealand.

Council asks residents to keep the three P’s in mind during 2016 and help play a part in cleaning up sewerage networks throughout Isaac and the state.

Future of Coal and Gold Festival

St Joseph’s School Student of the week: Prep: Sophie Witten for the amazing start you have had in Prep and for always being ready to learn.

Year 1: Georgia Hutton for the fantastic start that you have had in Year 1. It has been a joy to see you settle into our classroom and school.

Year 3: Ryder Marks for your excellent contributions this week during discussion time.

Year 4: Cooper Hutton for your consistent effort and willingness to learn.

Year 5/6: Chelsea Williams for putting extra effort into understanding factors, multiples and place value in mathematics this week.

Principal’s Award: Hollin Fish for the wonderful effort you put in to your story writing during the week.

Urgently needed are some willing and able volunteer committee members to help continue the annual Coal and Gold Festival.

This year will include some recognition and remembrance of the 1916 flood. All ideas will be welcomed and tabled.

The festival is a significant event on the calendar each year for Clermont community helping to encourage tourists to stay in the area longer and flowing on to the local businesses.

Gold Fest started back in 1998 as a community event based around putting the town on the map, promoting the area, encouraging tourist and promoting local business.

The venues have changed a couple of times over the years from Rose Harris Park to the Show grounds back to Rose Harris Park and is currently being held at Centenary Park.

The event is based around market stall holders selling a variety of wares generally of a nature that is not available locally; the committee provides the venue, entertainment to draw people to support the event and the overall coordination and promotion of the event.

Local schools have always been involved with numerous items of entertainment. Locals are also encouraged to have market stalls.

If a full committee cannot be recruited the event will not proceed this year and could potentially not happen again in the future.

A meeting will be held on February 24 at 22 Blamey St at 7.30pm to determine the future of the event.

On the Shelf Calling all Library Lovers It’s February…the most romantic month of the year!

February is Library Lovers month!

Isaac Libraries is celebrating Library Lovers month during February and invite all community members to visit their Isaac Library to find romance…with a book, propose to read a book on their ‘must read list’ or go on a blind date with a different genre or author.

As 2016 is a leap year, there is an extra day in February… so leap into reading this month!

First Five Forever Isaac Libraries recently launched their First Five Forever program and there was a good attendance at all launches, including the Clermont Library. The First Five Forever aims is to give children from birth to five years old the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes.

Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child.

Monash Lodge visit It was lovely to have a group of Monash Lodge residents visit the Clermont Library recently. The residents and their assistants enjoyed morning tea in the library’s garden, then had a look around the library.

For several years, the Lodge and the Clermont Library have worked together to ‘take the library’ to Lodge residents.

Library staff select books for the residents and these books have then been collected and delivered to the residents by a Lodge staff member or Lodge volunteer.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime and Craft and Rhymetime Have you recently moved to Clermont with a young family and want to meet other young families.

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions and these are a good way to connect with other parents with young children.

Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs. Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years.

Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.

Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

Some of the residents who use this service were delighted to be able to personally choose their books on the visit to the Clermont Library.

Play and Learn with Busythings Busythings is one of many free library e-resources available via Council’s website. Busythings aims to help children aged three to 11 years develop their literacy, numeracy, music, art and ICT skills through fun and interactive learning activities.

Pregnancy Pilates A low impact pilates class which focuses on pelvic floor, posture and general strength and well being for pregnant ladies who have been cleared to exercise during their pregnancy.

Pilates Level 1 Matwork 45mins learn the fundamentals of Pilates in a low impact class for good posture, strength for pelvic floor, core and general toning.

Yoga A class for everyone! For ages 5 and up to 90 or more. You will learn breathing exercises and positions that can help improve arthritic symptoms, insomnia, blood pressure, mood and aid with relaxation and flexibility.

There are many benefits of Yoga, this class is suitable for pregnant women, screening will be conducted prior to participation. BOOKINGS FOR YOGA ARE ESSENTIAL. $16.50 for casuals . $6.60 for children up to 14 years. Power Yoga is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.

SPIN/Revolution Great music and a fantastic calorie burning hour of indoor cycling. You’ll learn correct technique for improved performance and have fun cycling.

Bookings essential. Revolution Express is a half hour session being added to the program in November all indoor cycling classes are moderate to high intensity classes.

Metafit This is a 30 minute bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire!

Open gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

THUMP boxing is a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination. The cardio component uses the body’s energy
