Tickets on sale for Mayor’s Charity Ball for White Ribbon Tickets for Mayor Anne Baker’s Charity Ball for White Ribbon went on sale Monday 14 September.

Event organiser Melissa Westcott said everything is set for the black tie affair in the Square.

“Proudly supporting White Ribbon, Australia’s campaign to stop violence against women, the Charity Ball has been well supported by the community, businesses and sponsors.”

“We are expecting 300 guests to support the stylish evening under the stars which includes a three course meal, charity auction, entertainment, live band and dancing,” Mrs Westcott said.

“Local talent Mezzanine, featuring lead vocals Rob Cookson and Klancie Keough, will be performing chart toppers across the eras late into the night.”

“I’m also delighted to announce White Ribbon Ambassador and passionate advocate for preventing men’s violence against women, Mick Doleman will be our guest speaker.”

The charity evening will be held on Saturday, October 31 in Moranbah Town Square from 6.30pm.

The dress code will be formal/black tie, limited tickets will be available soon at $125 per person or $1250 per table of 10.

Tickets went on sale from 9am Monday September 14 until sold out, limited to 10 tickets (one table) per sale.

Ashgrove Literature Festival Four students Thomas McDonald, Holly Weier, Luke Kinnon and Ella Poulus were selected to represent Clermont at the Ashgrove Literature Festival. The students were exposed to an array of activities that ranged from creative writing and cartooning, to classroom activities with the students of Ashgrove. Clermont State School students did our community proud demonstrating a great attitude which was complimented by staff and visitors at Ashgrove State School including the Principal, Mr Pat Murphy. Well done boys and girls.

Students competing at Capricornia Trials Two weeks ago at the Capricornia Athletics Trials in Rockhampton, Sophie Keune, Luke Callanan, Luke Kinnon, Kalaiyah Ottaviano, Ella and Evie Poulus competed in a range of events. Students represented their school, sub district and district with distinction. At the end of the day, Evie Poulus was selected in the under 10’s girls high jump to compete in the state trials at Townsville. Well done girls, boys and good luck Evie.

FUZZBOOK contributed by The Sarge Hello to the people of Clermont, I am in the unenviable position of once again trying to formulate a police interest and events column like the previous, but discontinued, Sarges Soapbox. Now as a soapbox is something from the age of yesteryear, and possibly the younger readers have no idea what I am on about, I thought a modern take on the name would be in order. As social media is so prevalent in our society I have crafted something only in name, not operation, to follow this trend as I believe a good read is better than some blogging, poking, networking and so forth and you can still LOL (laugh out loud) if you want to.

So don’t try and search for this on the internet, just read and interpret.

As wages drop and things get tight people succumb to stealing to supplement incomes. For instance people have left brand new Engel fridges on the backs of their utilities, would someone leave the $1500 cash these cost sitting out in the open in a similar way for everyone to see?

As I approach my 10 year mark in Clermont I often reflect on what has happened over the years. True some things occur still to this day that defy understanding on my part but other people think it is so funny, does everyone remember planking?

Where did that go and thank goodness it did. But seriously the town of Clermont at the moment is in a slow period and I talk to business people and townsfolk alike and there still is positivity in the town. For instance I am positive there are people that do not learn from their mistakes.

Just a few tips, if someone rings you to tell you something is wrong with something, especially bank accounts, phone bills, your computers security, tax or the like, alarm bells should be ringing, companies do not contact you in this way. If you think it is genuine obtain their employee identification including number. Then hang up and ring that organisation, DO NOT USE A NUMBER THEY GIVE YOU, FIND IT YOURSELF. 99 times out of a 100 that employee will not exist and you will have saved yourself some grief.

On the crime front a couple of incidents have occurred lately that need to be brought to the attention of everybody. The town has had instances where children have been approached by strange persons and asked questions or have had comments made to them that has caused worry in parents and care givers alike. Police have investigated these matters and members of the Criminal Investigation Branch from Moranbah have been involved. The message here is make sure you know where your kids are and know who they are talking to.

This is not just in the physical world but digital also. Who are your kids talking to on the internet, phone, social media and the like? Instances of grooming have been reported locally where predators on the internet try to lure children to areas for the purpose of procuring sex, don’t let this happen to our communities children.

Next tip, get good security software on your computer, this is essential and keep the software up to date all the time. If you do not have any knowledge in this area be careful and consult the right type of people, be careful downloading from the internet from untrusted sources as sometimes viruses and malware is spread in this way.

We have had instances of theft in and around the township including two stolen vehicles. Investigations are continuing into these thefts but again the message here is lock your car, lock your toolboxes and do not leave anything out in the open that is valuable for people to steal.

Another topic I want to touch on is SCAMS. I’ll start out with the old saying, if it is too good to be true, it is, full stop, no negotiations. I have had several instances where people have come into the police station reporting SCAMS. If you have been scammed online then report the matter to ACORN, this is a website set up by all police within Australia to report online scams and crimes.

Finally if something does sound dodgy or as our former prime minister said, does not pass the sniff test, then by all means BEFORE you do something call me or anyone at the police station and we will discuss it with you.

Look that’s all for now but stay tuned, I’ll try and keep this going so that you are informed.

To the willing band of helpers (you know who you are) who made the hall look fantastic and really made the day fun and easy going, I am greatly indebted and humbled by the generous time given. Thank you. contributed by Jackie Martin THANK YOU On behalf of the Mater foundation and the Smiling for Smiddy crew, John and I would like to say a huge thank you once again to the community for its amazing support of this event.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and the baby that has been one man’s response to his grief at the death of a young friend to melanoma has certainly been raised by the wider Clermont community to make it to this years 10th year celebrations. Many people have contributed over the last 9 years in both small and large ways, and all have helped this challenge become the success story for the Mater Foundation that it has become.

As such, thank you to all the hosts who willingly take billets for the night, many of whom came to the community dinner to support the riders. Thank you to Glencore who sponsored this dinner for the community, thus enabling us to support the fundraising effort by donating directly to the foundation instead of having to buy dinner.

Thank you also to the Clermont State School and St Joseph’s School who participated in a silly socks day, adding to the fund raising and learning about important bike and sun safety along the way. Thank you to the Clermont police force who were more then willing to assist with this message delivery to the students.

A massive thank you to Crystal W and all of the kids and parents who came down the street to cheer the riders in – it really does make an impact on the riders, especially after such a hard day of riding. Day 5 has become the hard day thanks to sneaky headwinds that seem to always whip up during Smiddy week! Marie and Roger V are also fantastic supporters of this event, and the thought of a cold beer and delicious food always inspires the riders in that last hard 50km slog.

This year was a particularly sad yet exciting one. Adam Smiddy, the young friend who passed away ten years ago has had his parents David and Maria supporting the Brisbane to Townsville challenge since it began. Sadly, Maria passed away earlier this year after her own cancer battle. Thus, this challenge was a particularly special one, as it reflected Maria and her strength and character. Small gestures were presented throughout the week in acknowledgement of Maria.

Thank you must go to Monash Lodge, for allowing us to cut and place some gerberas on the community dinner tables – these were Maria’s favourite flower. David Smiddy had the opportunity to inspect the hall before the dinner, and he was visibly touched by their thoughtfulness in being able to include Maria in this way.

Naturally, Smiling for Smiddy will be back next year again in September. Keep up the good work!

Expressions of Interest - Community Representative Clermont Historical Centre Advisory Committee Expressions of Interest are sought from interested persons to join the Clermont Historical Centre Advisory Committee as a Community Representative.

The Committee is made up of two (2) elected Councillors, (2) IRC employees and three (3) Community Representatives.

The Committee advises Council on short and long term issues to ensure successful management of the facility into the future. The day to day running of the Centre is managed by the Council, with the advice, support and assistance of the Advisory Committee.

The Committee is guided by the Clermont Historical Centre Strategic Business Plan and operates in accordance with the Committee Terms of Reference.

Expressions of interest to join the Clermont Historical Centre Advisory Committee should be made in writing and address the following selection criteria: 1. Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of local heritage management issues; 2. Demonstrated ability to dedicate time to attend monthly meetings, perform tasks and actively contribute to committee business;

3. Demonstrated ability to contribute positively and constructively within an agreed management framework; 4. Demonstrated links with the local community and Isaac Region communities for the purpose of passing on information and receiving feedback; and 5. All applicants must reside within the Isaac Region Local Government Area.

National Stroke Week is about raising awareness to prevent stroke in Australia. The National Stroke Foundation encourages all Australians to: • • •

Be aware of what stroke is, how to recognise a stroke and what to do Live healthy to reduce the risk of stroke Get a regular health check

Stroke symptoms How do you know if someone is having a stroke? Think…

F.A.S.T. The National Stroke Foundation recommends the F.A.S.T. test as an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke. This involves asking these simple questions: Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?

Arms: Can they lift both arms?

Speech: Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?

Time: Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away.

A stroke is not a heart attack. A stroke happens when the supply of blood to the brain is suddenly interrupted. Some strokes are fatal while others cause permanent or temporary disability.

The longer a stroke remains untreated, the greater the chance of stroke related brain damage. Emergency medical treatment soon after symptoms begin improves the chance of survival and successful rehabilitation.

Facial weakness, arm weakness and difficulty with speech are the most common symptoms or signs of stroke, but they are not the only signs. Other signs of stroke may include one, or a combination of: • • • • • •

Weakness or numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg on either or both sides of the body Difficulty speaking or understanding Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall Loss of vision, sudden blurring or decreased vision in one or both eyes Headache, usually severe and abrupt onset or unexplained change in the pattern of headaches Difficulty swallowing

The signs of stroke may occur alone or in combination and they can last a few seconds or up to 24 hours and then disappear.

When symptoms disappear within 24 hours, this episode may be a mini stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA).

Stroke prevention There are things that you can do to minimise your chances of having a stroke. High blood pressure (hypertension) is the most important known risk factor for stroke. High blood pressure can cause damage to blood vessel walls, which may eventually lead to a stroke.

You can control your blood pressure by changing your diet and lifestyle. You can do this particularly through regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight. Being a non-smoker, not being diabetic, maintaining good blood cholesterol, knowing your family history risk factors, limiting your alcoholic intake, and eating well can also help.

It is highly recommended that you have your blood pressure checked regularly. The Clermont Surgery is doing free Know your numbers health checks during this stroke awareness week and the Amcal Chemist is also able to check your blood pressure.

Remember: A stroke is always a medical emergency. If you or someone else experiences the signs of stroke, no matter how long they last, call 000 immediately.

The faster your act, the more of the person you save.

Michelle Landry brings ‘big ears’ listening tour to Clermont Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry MP is hosting an opportunity to chat with locals on federal matters as part of her ‘big ears’ listening tour across inland Capricornia.

Ms Landry will visit Clermont and Middlemount. Joining her will be Queensland Senator Matthew Canavan.

“Over the next few months I will doing a series of ‘big ears’ listening tours and I am thrilled Clermont and Middlemount will feature as among the first places on the tour,” Ms Landry said.

“I have been to Clermont and Middlemount many times. Our visit in September is an opportunity for people to chat about federal issues and solutions in their area and identify key infrastructure needs,” she said.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime and Craft and Rhymetime Have you recently moved to Clermont with a young family and want to meet other young families.

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions and these sessions are a good way to connect with parents and young children.

QCWA Dinner Dance a great success The QCWA dinner dance was a great success on Saturday night. We would like to thank our generous community for their support in making it the great night it was. We can’t thank you all enough.

Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years.

To the Band that played - your music and singing set the mood for the night and was very enjoyable. Where else would you find music like this to dance to?

Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.

Thanks to Coast2Coast for the delicious meal.

Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

Playgroup If you have children under 5 and would like to get out and meet other mums and children, you are always welcome at playgroup on Wednesday mornings (during the school term) at 9.15am in the Clermont State School Hall.

Please bring your own morning tea and a gold coin donation.

The proceeds haven’t yet been finalised but it is looking as if both charities will be receiving a very generous amount.

Our next projects are catering for the Clermont Beef Bull Sale on Tuesday September 22, followed by our International Dinner, themed Midlands of England, on Tuesday September 29.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday October 7.

On the Shelf Flying Fox Season…what do you do?

It’s Flying Fox Season but do you know what to do?

Come along to a friendly information session about flying foxes, hosted by the Isaac Regional Council’s Environmental Team at the Clermont Library. The information session titled ‘Flying Foxes, My Children, My Pets, My Livestock’ will be held from 1pm – 3pm on today Friday September 18 and will include fun craft activities for children.

Children’s holiday activities The Clermont Library will be holding children’s holiday activities for primary school-age children during the September/October school holidays.

Sessions will be held on Tuesday September 22 and September 29, Thursday September 24 and October 1, from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Craft activities will include making a yarn octopus, dream catcher and button art and as some sessions will be limited to 12 places, you will need to book ahead for your child/children to attend.

Borrow an audiobook for driving trip School holidays start next week and if you are planning a driving trip, listening to audiobooks is a good way to keep everyone alert and entertained in the car. Isaac Libraries have audiobooks in CD format or downloadable digital audiobooks for patrons to borrow.

If you would like to know more about borrowing digital audiobooks, visit the Clermont Library and ask the staff.

LOTE books Did you know that the Isaac Libraries can source books in Languages Other Than English for patrons? The Clermont Library currently has a selection of adult fiction and adult non-fiction in Punjabi for borrowing. If there are any other languages patrons would like to borrow books in, please see the staff.

Hold a family movie night It’s not just books lining the shelves at the Clermont Library – there are also DVDs to borrow. Come in and borrow a few DVDs for a family movie night, especially if you have grandchildren visiting over the school holidays.

Get into in2Era In2Era is a free library e-resource available through the Isaac Libraries link on the Isaac Regional Council’s webpage.

In2Era is a database of picture and Early Literacy Books online, aimed at children aged three to 10 years.

In2Era has more than 200 titles with Australian narration and children can listen to the story, read along with the narrator and create storyboard pictures using the books own characters and themes.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane.

While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas.

Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Workout Of the Day (WOD) This is a board based program, working TO the principles of H.I.I.T where you can come in and complete the workout in your own time.

What is H.I.I.T? High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open Gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets Lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Mad GRIT This is a 30min program incorporating core, strength and cardio based exercise, ideal for total fitness development.

THUMP Boxing is a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination. The cardio component uses the body’s energy systems and improves your ability to use oxygen, helping you to work harder for longer and burn fat in the process.

Twelve vets played a 3 ball Ambrose and the winners were Glenda Rieck, Gary Manion and Alan McGuiness with run downs to Jerry Marr, Bill Oates and Essie Wood.

Anyone who is interested in shooting rifles or pistols are welcome to attend.

Vets hit off every Thursday at 2pm and visitors are welcome.
