HISTORIC STEAM ENGINE BACK IN ACTION! Come on out to the Clermont Historical Centre on Saturday 21 August, to get a rare glimpse of mechanical history in action. A fully restored Aveling & Porter #6803 steam engine, the show piece of the Clermont Historical Centre, will be fired up for the Clermont Gold & Coal Festival. It’s been four years since the Aveling and Porter steam engine has come to life for public display. The steam engine was the star attraction of the Clermont Historical Centre’s Community Open Day held in 2017. Clermont local, Kevin Fry took on the full restoration of the Aveling and Porter steam engine in 2017 under the direction of Robert Kluck. Both Kevin and Robert will be returning to the wheel to drive the steam engine. There will be free entry to the Clermont Historical Centre on 21 August, with a morning tea to be served at 10.30am and the Aveling & Porter steaming from 12pm. The Reflections of Resilience and Back on Track Exhibitions will also be open for viewing.
The Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine has a very important connection to Clermont’s history. Clermont’s founders built the town on flat but flood-prone land between Sandy Creek and Hood’s Lagoon. As Clermont residents enjoyed the festivities of Christmas 1916, they could not have foreseen or imagined the horrendous tragedy that was about to strike their town. A cyclone had formed on 26 December, 1916 near the Whitsunday Group Islands and crossed the coast between Bowen and Mackay on 28 December. The cyclone tracked inland through the Pioneer Valley near Mackay and turned into a rain depression. The former cyclone was located about 90km north of Clermont on 27 December, and then it crossed the Denham Range to be just southeast of ‘Kilcummin’ and northwest of Clermont at 4am, 28 December.

Rain from the ex-cyclone caused the Wolfgang and Sandy Creek systems to swell and send a raging torrent downstream towards Clermont. Wolfang and Sandy Creek join about a kilometre northwest of Clermont and both creeks broke their banks around midnight, sending a surge of floodwater towards Clermont. Little warning could be given to Clermont’s residents about the impending danger. At 6am, 28 December, floodwater reached two feet in Drummond Street and steadily rose during the morning. The flood peaked at a height of 16-feet at midday and then gradually dropped. When the floodwaters subsided, Clermont was in ruins with many houses and buildings either wrecked or completely swept away. People had taken to rooftops of homes and building, hoping it would be a safe haven to wait out the flood, but many were flung into the turbulent waters after the house or building collapsed. Many people were lucky to have been able to grab onto a tree branch and climb into trees to escape the floodwaters and wait to be rescued. Tragically, the 1916 flood claimed 64 lives was estimated to have caused £100,000 damage to the town. As residents began recovering from the flood, they questioned Clermont’s future. The Minster for Public Instruction and the local representative in the Queensland Parliament, Mr H F Hardacre visited Clermont on 5 January, 1917 to inspect the flood damage, meet with the people and attend a public meeting. At the public meeting, Mr Hardacre encouraged people to rebuild the town. Clermont’s citizens were determined to rebuild their town and this resulted in the passing of the Clermont Flood Relief Act of 1917 in the Queensland Parliament on 2 February 1917, and then amendment of the Act in March 1917. The Clermont Flood Relief Act of 1917 allowed for Crown Land west of the railway line to be opened up for residential use by citizens who had lost their homes in the flood and town land on or near Capella and Herschell Streets to be allocated to people to re-establish their business. Under the Act, no-one could hold more than an acre and a home or business had to be built on
the allotment within 12 months or they would have to forfeit the allotment. Despite the floodwater’s current being strong enough to move a six-tonne boiler a considerable distance from the town, several large buildings had withstood the flood and were in sound condition. These buildings included the Leo Hotel, Grand Hotel, the Commercial Hotel and the Griffin & Co. Store and they had to be somehow moved to the new townsite. There were two options – dismantle and rebuild on the new site or shift the intact buildings using a steam engine. Two steam engines were contracted to shift the buildings. One was an 1899-built Aveling No. 2327, single cylinder engine owned by Mr W H McLean, who was using it to haul coal from the Eldorado Mine to the Clermont railhead. This engine had previously been owned by the Gogango Divisional Board near Rockhampton and believed to have been used on roadworks. Unfortunately, the Aveling No. 2327 steam engine broke down and it was abandoned on the town’s outskirts. The Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine was the other engine used to shift buildings to the new town site. This steam engine belonged to the Derrett brothers who operated a sawmill near Clermont. The Derretts bought the Aveling and Porter steam engine from Clark & Fauset in Brisbane in 1912. The engine was fitted with extra wide wheels and was likely used on rough roads and bush tracks. How did these engines move large, two-storey buildings from the old township to new sites along Capella Street? Each building to be shifted had its own challenges. The Grand Hotel was originally on the corner of Tropic and Drummond Streets. The Grand’s journey to its new site began on 16 August, 1917 and quite a crowd gathered to witness The Grand leaving the old site.
Continued on Page 3...
The Derrett brothers’ Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine was tasked with moving The Grand to its new site on the corner of Capella and Daintree Streets – a distance of about two miles (3.2 kilometres). Built of hardwood timber, The Grand was 118 feet long and 47 feet wide (36 x 14.3 metres) and was estimated to weigh 180 tons. The building was put on strong bearers fitted with cast-iron wheels, which ran on five sets of wooden rails and winched along by the Aveling and Porter steam engine. The Grand was moved in one piece and still had its balconies attached in the process. The only damage that occurred was the fracture of a 3 x 1 stay and breakage of a pane of glass.
Ernie used the steam engine at his sawmill. Tom Higgins later acquired the Aveling and Porter steam engine and put into service on the Miclere goldfields. The steam engine powered gold-stamper batteries to crush mined rock and to also run other equipment. The steam engine was decommissioned by the 1960s and still owned by Tom Higgins. The Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine could have become a lost historical relic if it had not been for the Clermont Rotary Club. You can learn more about the life of the Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine when you visit the Clermont Historical Centre.
It took about four weeks to move and position The Grand on its new site, with the work completed by mid-September, 1917. The Grand and other hotels that were shifted kept trading while being moved. Once contracts for shifting the buildings were finished, the Derrett brothers reinstated the steam engine at their sawmill. Mr G E Derrett sold the Aveling and Porter steam engine to another local sawmiller, Ernie Springs in 1944 for £100 pounds.
ICONIC PIECE OF CLERMONT HISTORY SET FOR STEAMY RE-START
An iconic steam engine that helped move a historic town out of a deadly flood zone is set to be the star attraction at a free event in Clermont.
The event is part of a partnership with Clermont Artslink – Scones ‘n’ Steam – as part of the Clermont Gold and Coal Festival’s 21st birthday celebrations.
The community day is a chance for visitors and residents to experience the rich and diverse local history at Clermont Historical Centre on Saturday, 21 August 2021.
Morning tea is being served at 10.30am with the steaming to start from 12 noon. Blair Athol coal donated by Terracom will be used to fire the engine.
Isaac Regional Council Division 1 Cr Greg Austen said the steaming of the legendary traction steam engine remains key to Clermont’s heritage. “The historic Aveling & Porter steam engine was one of two that moved Clermont after the 1916 Flood,” Cr Austen said. “More than 60 people lost their lives in floodwaters after a tropical cyclone crossed through the Whitsunday passage in December 1916.”
Visitors and residents can also enjoy two exhibitions at the Clermont Historical Centre, which is on the Gregory Highway, about 2km from Clermont. Reflections of Resilience is an exhibition that chronicles the colourful past of Clermont and Blair Athol’s hospitals while Back on Track explores country racing in the exceptionally brutal 19th Century existence in colonial Peak Downs.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT – VALE MO HAYDER JANUARY 1962 – 27 JULY 2021
British crime and thriller fiction writer, Mo Hayder lost her battle with motor neurone disease on 27 July 2021, aged 59 years. Mo Hayder was the pen name of author, Clare Dunkel. Leaving school when she was 15, Hayder worked as a barmaid, security guard, filmmaker, hostess in a Tokyo club and teacher of English as a foreign language in Asia before taking up writing. Hayder burst on to the literary scene in 1999 with her debut novel, Birdman. ‘Birdman’ was the first of seven books Hayder wrote in the Jack Caffery series from 2000 to 2014. She also wrote three stand-alone novels ‘Tokyo’ (also published as ‘The Devil of Nanking’), ‘Pig Island’ and ‘Hanging Hill’. CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE If you were a child of the 1980s and 1990s, do you remember reading Choose Your Own Adventure books? Oh, the decisions to be made…. should I turn the page and continue the storyline or flip through to page 22 and follow a twist in the plot? Choose Your Own Adventure books were not your typical junior fiction novel as there were several different storylines and endings and you followed directions to which page to turn to, to continue the story you were reading. The books had to be read and re-read because you wanted to choose a different adventure every time. The Isaac Libraries has a new generation of books similar to the Choose Your Own Adventure books. These books are great to read to ‘preppies’ and slightly older children at bedtime.
NEW ARRIVALS New books in adult fiction include: • A Simple Murder (Short Stories) by Linda Castillo • A Week at the Shore by Barbara Delinsky • Devil in Disguise by Lisa Kleypas • The Doll by Yrsa Sigurdardottir • Fast Track by Stephen Leather Until next time, stay safe and healthy, Sue, Mikaela, Robekah and Laura at the Clermont Library.
