SPRING RACING AND FASHION SET TO SIZZLE AT LOCAL TRACK Clermont Race Club is set to host its annual spring race meet at Pepperina Park this Saturday, November 24.

The Lund Grain Clermont Classic will be the club’s final meet for the year offering up a five race program, local bookies, fashions on the field and kid’s entertainment.

Mayor Anne Baker said Isaac Regional Council was proud to be a gold sponsor of the event as part of a three-year funding agreement through the Isaac Community Grants program.

“Council is proud to support the Clermont Race Club to host the Clermont Classic, in particular the Isaac Regional Council QTIS Benchmark 50 Handicap 1400m race,” Mayor Baker said.

“The Clermont Race Club committee, volunteers and associated sponsors should be congratulated for their ongoing commitment and efforts to bring local racing to our community each year.

CR LYN’S COLUMN Congratulations to all involved in the recent Clermont Beef Expo and Trade Display. It is certainly getting bigger and better every year.

This year, we actually had rain the night before the event, so I was walking in mud in the cattle yards as opposed to the dust of last year.

Hasn’t the rain been wonderful? Our whole town and surrounding areas look absolutely amazing.

Lawn mowers will again be buzzing around the town instead of sitting in the garden sheds.

If you can mow without the magpies, the ants and anything else, good luck.

I don’t seem to have spent much time in the office of late but I have been busy with meetings, Montcler and travelling for Council.

Hopefully, after my recent trip to Ipswich I will get back into the groove of trying to spend a few days a week in the office.

My granddaughter graduated from Ipswich Girls Grammar last week and I was able to be there and attend many of the school activities.

I can’t get over the fact that over 17 years have gone by since she was born, how time flies.

Can you also believe that Christmas is not that far off?

We are seeing all manner of Christmas advertising being done in stores and on our televisions. It seems to get earlier every year.

One thing that does bug me is the Christmas carols you have to endure when you walk into some shops. All I am saying is that a little goes a long long way.

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is a population program and federal government initiative that is being implemented across Australia. Each week up to 80 Australians are dying from bowel cancer.

By 2020 all people aged 50-74 who are registered with Medicare and who do not opt out of the program will be sent a free kit in the mail every two years.

CLERMONT WATER UPDATE Isaac Regional Council acknowledges the community’s concerns in relation to water discolouration in Clermont and assures residents it is continuing to address the issue and deliver long-term improvements to the town water supply. Water sample from 21 November Council appreciates that the Clermont community are understandably concerned about water discolouration in the town supply and are undertaking a range of measures to address this. The community is entitled to expect a quality drinking water supply and Council shares this expectation, which is why we are working to resolve both the present issue and historic issues by delivering long-term improvements to Clermont’s water network.

At present,we are undertaking a town-wide water mains flushing program to clear the network of discolouration and sediment. This has been occurring daily since Sunday and will continue to occur. The water supply is being comprehensively treated and Council continues to work to address issues caused by high sediment levels in the raw water supply.

As a result of these efforts, Council can report that on Wednesday morning (21 November) consistent clean water from the Clermont Water Treatment Plant was renewing the town reservoir and water supply. We expect the discolouration to progressively disappear from the water supply over coming days. However, residue in the reservoir may cause sporadic instances of discolouration. Council will be engaging professional divers to remove remaining sediment from the town reservoir early next week.

Council will be installing new pumps and controls at the Clermont Water Treatment Plant in January 2019. These measures will ensure poor quality water will be identified and plant shut down immediately so operators can make necessary adjustments to treatment processes. This will also prevent water delivery into the town water supply until water quality is at a high level.

WHAT YOU CAN DO Council understands that seeing discoloured water coming from your tap or in the sink can be disconcerting. Residents who continue to experience water issues are asked to contact Council on 1300 ISAACS (1300 47 22 27) so it can be documented and investigated. As we continue to flush the water network, issues may become isolated to pockets of town, so your assistance in helping track this is appreciated.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED Council will issue regular community updates in relation to measures being undertaken to improve the water supply until such time as water clarity is restored and we are satisfied the present issues have been resolved.

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY Residents of Clermont and all Isaac communities can be assured Council is committed to improving water infrastructure and service delivery across the region and is investing significantly in this essential function. Council acknowledges there have been past issues in relation to the water supply, but we are working hard to deliver long-term solutions, particularly in the area of drinking water quality.

In 2018-19, Council will be spending almost $23 million to maintain and improve the region’s water and wastewater network.

WHAT CAUSED THIS? 90% of the Isaac region is presently drought-declared, including Clermont and the catchment which supports Theresa Creek Dam. Prior to significant rainfall on 30 October, Clermont had been subject to Level 2 water restrictions.

Inflows into the dam were such that the spillway overtopped.

Unfortunately, this storm event and subsequent rainfall washed large volumes of sediment and organic matter into the dam, which supplies the Clermont water treatment plant.

This impacted the overall quality of raw water supplied to the water treatment plant and Council operators have continued to adjust treatment measures to address this. On Friday, 16 November, high sediment levels in the raw water supply caused a chemical pump that was set up to cope with this increased turbidity to fail. Whilst the supply was still treated, the turbidity passed into the distribution network.

This issue was addressed by operational staff as soon as practicable. When the pump was restarted manually, it addressed the turbidity issue, but the chemical mix created a discoloration issue of the treated water. The chemicals used are tasteless and odourless, harmless to human health, but in quantity do discolour water.

PUBLIC NOTICES PARTIAL TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF CENTENARY PARK, CLERMONT - UPDATE #3 Isaac Regional Council advises that the temporary fencing to isolate the flying fox roost will remain partially closed until further notice.

This means that a pedestrian gate on the corner of Capella and Lime streets will be partially closed.

Alternative access is available since majority of the park, including the shade structure and toilets, is unaffected by this temporary closure.

The roost is away from residential backyards, in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets).

The flying fox roost has decreased substantially in the past week however Council will continue to monitor the flying fox roost in case the number increases over the coming weeks.

Council workers have trimmed some trees in the park to try and discourage more roosting in the area last month.

Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions can impact on you, your neighbours and your community.

Council recommends that residents undertake proactive vegetation management at properties to prevent flying foxes from camping in their backyards.

The best way to do this is to trim or remove potential camp trees, commonly mature mango, fig, or poinciana, little red flying foxes can also camp in eucalyptus, palm and other trees.

Council thanks residents for their understanding and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

SIGN UP FOR SUMMER READING CLUB Isaac Libraries are participating in the Summer Reading Club Program during December and January.

Summer Reading Club (SRC) is a free program that inspires a child’s imagination and instills a love of reading and libraries in children. SRC’s 2018 is Curious Creatures – Discover New Worlds.

BOOKINGS Bookings are essential for all library programs and events.

Markus Zusak is an Australian author, best known for writing international bestsellers – The Book Thief and The Messenger.

Bright, vibrant picture book tales come alive when read by library staff along with a simple craft activity which helps enhance fine motor skill development.

Zusak graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education.

He briefly taught English at his old school, Engadine High School, while writing.

FUNCTIONAL FITNESS Functional fitness trains your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports.

While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasise core stability.

STRETCH CLASS Improve the flexibility of your joints and muscles with our stretch classes. Stretching is a vital component in any fitness regime, whether you’re a fitness newbie or a professional level athlete, it can boost the effectiveness of your workout routine.

THUMP A 1 hour boxing for fitness class, boxing equipment is provided (gloved, focus pads, kick shields, etc). Inners must be work, these can be purchased from reception for $5 previous to beginning the session.

VIRTUAL RIP A high intensity strength conditioning class using barbell and light dumbbell weights. 45 minutes – 1 hour in duration.

VIRTUAL CYCLE CHALLENGE Revolution by group Rx is a cycling program that brings the outdoor ride – inside. Interval bases cadence training takes your classes through sprints, hill and mountains, to achieve results and personal goals.

Revolution is a 60-minute cycling program tailor-made for anyone who can ride a bike. This class is capped at 10 participants.

KANGA TRAINING Kanga training is a complete workout during which both cardiovascular endurance/flexibility and muscular capacity/strength are enhanced. Unlike traditional exercise classes, new mums need not worry about finding a babysitter or minding an unsettled baby during class because the babies are worn on them and get to be part of the action!

FIGHT CLUB JIU JITSU Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art specialising in submission grappling. It is a non-striking sport that promotes fitness, self-confidence, respect, flexibility and teaches self defence strategies.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes have now started for Adults and Kids (8+).

Both Gi and no-Gi classes are being offered.

METAFIT: this is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.

This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas.

Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

METAPWR: is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power. All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body, involving your upper and lower body and core muscles.

Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn.

The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat.

LET’S LIFT: this program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights.

This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

CIRCUIT TRAINING: this is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-intensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance.

An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.
