COMMUNITY NEWS OPPORTUNITY’S A PLENTY FOR CLERMONT QUEENSLAND CORRECTIVE SERVICES Opportunity comes in all shapes and sizes. The Clermont Bowling Club has had an opportunity to engage the assistance of the prisoners at the Clermont Work Camp to complete a vital piece of infrastructure, allowing for people of all abilities to access their sporting club and enjoy the activity but also to continue to be inclusive with their people. As people’s lives return to somewhat normality after COVID-19 and activities become more consistent many clubs and organisation have used the opportunity to advance their spaces. The Clermont Work Camp prisoners over several rotations have laid a brand-new concrete pathway including a kerb ramp from the Lime Street roadway to the disable access ramp that provides access into the Bowling club. This fabulous addition, completed in our May rotation, has now given participants of all abilities a point of access that is easy to manage. The May rotation also saw the prisoners actively assisting in the setup of the annual Clermont Show with some hidden skills coming to light which proved to be of great benefit. The Clermont Show is such an important calendar event for the community and has given the prisoners a sense of reparation in being able to give back to such an event. Our June rotation saw the Clermont Day Care and Kindy have a broken pathway repaired allowing their young scooter and Clermont Bowling Club
bike riders to enjoy risk free which is great, whilst work began at the Motor Cross Club to give their toilet block a much needed face lift. Amongst the concreting, painting, vegetation control and maintenance, allocated workcamp prisoners continue to assist at the Clermont Saleyards and Historical Centre harnessing new skills and improving on their social presentations in preparation for release and future employment. 2021 is still shaping up to be a busy year with plenty more projects and jobs to be completed for the community, along with the many annual event set up and pack downs on the calendar. Queensland Corrective Services prides itself on being able to provide a labour source to the clubs and organisations of the communities in which they live. The work camp initiative is important in offering low-security prisoners the opportunity to make reparation to the community harmed by offending behaviours, whilst developing skills that will increase employment opportunities upon their release. In closing: “Every day is an opportunity for a great opportunity”- Annonymous. Contributed by Clermont Queensland Corrective Services

Jane Harper is an English-born Australian writer who is well-known as the author of The Dry. The Dry was published in 2016 and in 2019, it was adapted into a major movie, starring Eric Bana as the lead character of Aaron Falk. Harper was born in the United Kingdom and moved to Australia when she was eight. Her family returned to the UK when Harper was a teenager. Harper studied English and History at the University of Kent and after graduating, completed a journalism qualification. This led to a journalism cadetship with the Darling & Stockton Times in County Durham. Harper was a senior journalist on the Hull Daily Mail for several years before returning to Australia in 2008. She continued her journalism career in Australia. In 2014, Harper submitted a short story which was one of 12 chosen for the Big Issue’s annual Fiction Edition. She was then inspired to be more serious about creative writing and was awarded the 2015 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Unpublished Manuscript for her manuscript of The Dry. Harper has since written three more books and won numerous awards. Until next time, stay safe and healthy, Sue, Mikaela, Robekah and Laura at the Clermont Library.

NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS, CLERMONT From the sights of the traditional dancers, the sounds of the digeridoo to the smell of the smoking ceremony, it was a culturally immersive experience at the Clermont NAIODC Week ceremony held in Clermont on Tuesday, 13 July. 🖤💛❤️Council was proud to be a part of the Clermont NAIDOC Week activities, hosted by the Wangan & Jagalingou Cultural Custodians. Through the day, which took attendees to the ceremony at the newly constructed Bora Ring at Sandy Creek, attendees had the honour of hearing the stories, reflecting on the history, appreciating the culture and celebrating the achievements of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The construction of the Bora Ring was supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund - a partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
