Residents to have say on Isaac’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan Isaac residents are invited to have their say on Isaac Regional Council’s (IRC) draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan (WRRP). Mayor Anne Baker said the plan, developed to address the need for a waste management and resource recovery strategy for the region, seeks to reduce waste going to landfill. “It’s been drafted in line with community expectations as well as legislative requirements, risk, safety and commercial approach. “Over the course of the WRRP development, Council has gained a greater understanding of what’s required to guide programs and assist contract and investment decisions about future waste operation services, infrastructure needs and management.

“With a strong focus on financial sustainability, Council is committed to providing solutions for the reduction, collection, resource recovery and disposal of waste,” Mayor Baker said. Water, Sewerage and Waste Advisory Committee Chair Cr Peter Freeleagus said the plan essentially provides a framework for the development, management and rationalisation of Council’s resource recovery functions across the region over the next ten years. He said it was expected that Council’s long-term plan to close some landfills and convert the operations to Refuse Transfer Stations, as well as upgrading existing facilities, was consistent with Council’s aim to maintain and operate these assets.

“At the same time we will continue to encourage the community to reduce waste going to landfills and support recycling programs. “The WRRP is designed to be flexible and implemented in stages with the ability to adjust to changing financial situations. “It offers significant potential cost savings through operational efficiencies and will help achieve improvements in amenity and health and safety while improving residual waste disposal and recycling ratios. “We encourage residents to help shape our future waste management strategy by providing their views and feedback.” To have your say visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au Feedback is to be provided by Monday August 29.
