Festival to commemorate centenary of Clermont’s devastating flood Clermont’s Gold and Coal Festival is set to mix arts and culture with a touch of history when it kicks off this month.

“The festival is in its 18th year and will kick off with twilight markets and local performances on Friday (August 19) from 5pm.

The festival will be held across two days, from Friday August 19, at Centenary Park Clermont.

“It continues on Saturday with the return of the ‘Pimp Yo Pan’ Art Competition judging, followed by a jewellery raffle to wrap things up in the afternoon.

Mayor Anne Baker said this year the Festival would commemorate 100 years since the devastating Clermont flood. “In 1916 a flood raged through the old town of Clermont tragically killing more than 60 people and destroying everything from family homes to businesses. “A moving feature of the Gold and Coal Festival will be the Floating Lantern Ceremony. “Some 300 lanterns will be released onto Hoods Lagoon to commemorate the flood, while lotus flower lanterns will also be released to honor those who lost their lives.”

The Floating Lantern Ceremony will take place 8pm on Friday evening. “If you wish to take part in the ceremony please come to one of the Lantern Embellishing Workshops that will be held this month by myself and local artist Marcia Braxton,” said Mrs Zordan. “We would love to have as many decorated lanterns as possible to help commemorate the flood centenary.” Floating Lantern Workshops and Pimp Yo Pan Art Competition are proudly supported through Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Grants.

The Gold and Coal Festival is an annual event organised by Clermont Artslink, which celebrates local arts and culture, while promoting Clermont’s rich history.

The RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

Festival organiser and local artist Erin Zordan said the festival will host a unique line up of performances, live music, bush poetry and a second ‘unplugged’ stage.
