Aussies assemble for free family fun Barbecues are primed and ready to go for Australia Day across Isaac.

Moving memorial honoured lives lost The lives of more than 60 Clermont 1916 flood victims were honoured in a moving graveside memorial.

The service was held at Clermont Cemetery to mark the 100 year anniversary of one of the deadliest floods in Australian history.

Mayor Anne Baker said more than 200 people gathered to pay their respects near the heritage listed mass grave.

“They showed enormous courage and determination to pick up the pieces after a horrific disaster of that proportion.”

Cr Lyn Jones said she was proud to see her community come together once again to remember those tragically taken.

“Thank you to everyone involved in helping to commemorate the centenary of the flood.

The exhibition features local stories of courage, heroism and tragedy, memorabilia and photography.

The Centre is currently closed for conservation works reopening March 1, 2017.

Upon reopening patrons can continue to enjoy the exhibition until December 2017.

“It’s tragedies such as these that remind us of the frailty of life.

What’s your ‘what-if’ plan this storm season?

Isaac Regional Council is urging residents to consider their ‘what-if’ plan and get prepared this storm season.

“It’s important to get prepared now by tidying up gardens, cleaning gutters and making sure insurances are up to date.

Local Disaster Management Group Chair and Mayor Anne Baker said Queensland is at increased risk of natural disasters during November to April.

“Prepare a household emergency plan and put together your evacuation and emergency kit – could your family last for three days without food and water if disaster struck tomorrow?

“Isaac is susceptible to bushfires, flooding, tropical cyclones, road closures and service outages to name a few,” she said.

“In recent years we have seen how quickly natural disasters can arise, and how devastating and widespread their impacts can be.

“There are lots of ways you can prepare, but the easiest way is to visit the Get Ready website www.getready.qld.gov.au for great tips and factsheets.

In the event of a disaster, visit the Bureau of Meteorology website for weather updates, contact the State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500 for flood and storm assistance, and dial triple zero (000) for life-threatening emergencies.

The Isaac State Emergency Service (SES) is part of a national organisation of ‘ordinary people doing extraordinary things’.

Each year they help their communities in times of emergency and disaster, protecting the safety of our people.

The Isaac SES is always in need of volunteers. All SES volunteers are trained and equipped to help their communities with the primary purpose of helping our most vulnerable community members.

Isaac SES operate across depots in Moranbah, Nebo, Clermont, Dysart, Middlemount, Glenden, St Lawrence, Carmila and Greenhill, and welcomes volunteers aged 16 years and over.

What We Do Isaac SES volunteers empower members of the community to help themselves and others in times of emergency and disaster, so they can focus on helping the most vulnerable.

SES members work as part of a skilled team and have approved functions based on local hazards and skill sets.

As an SES volunteer you may not be activated on a regular basis, however your assistance will be critical when needed.

Becoming ‘Extraordinary’ No matter who you are or what you do, there’s an SES task to suit everyone. Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds - officer workers, miners, farmers, students, tradies and retirees.

In addition to helping your community in times of need you’ll become part of a like-minded yet diverse group of people.

You’ll form lasting friendships, and develop real life skills and knowledge that can be carried through to the workforce and will stay with you forever.

Many Isaac employers support volunteers in their workforce, meaning if you’re activated while at work they will support your SES commitments.

No matter who you are, or what you do, the SES needs you.

Public Notices Clermont Swimming Centre - Holiday operating hours Isaac Regional Council advises the community of the following change of operating hours for the Clermont Swimming Centre during the holiday period: Thursday January 26 12.30pm to 6pm Council apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Clermont Historical Centre closed for conservation works Isaac Regional Council advises residents and visitors the Clermont Historical Centre will close for planned conservation works from: Saturday December 24, 2016 to Tuesday February 28, 2017 During the closure museum staff will work to preserve Clermont’s historical items to ensure their longevity.

Projects include: •

Restoration of the original Aveling Porter Steam Traction Engine that moved Clermont during the 1916 Flood.

Continued restoration of Masonic Lodge including sanding and sealing of floors.

•

Progression of the digitisation of paper based collections.

•

Working to improve disabled access to the centre.

•

Planning for the 2017 Community Open Day and 2018 exhibition theme.

The centre will reopen to visitors from Wednesday March 1, 2017.

When the centre reopens the ‘Flood of Memories’ Exhibition will be on display until December 2017.

Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by the closure.

Clermont has made just over 1000 stars and is helping Isaac Libraries reach its goal of making 10,000 stars for the ‘One Million Stars to End Violence’ star weaving project.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children.

Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.

Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.

Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years.

Council calls for community contribution The deadline is looming for Isaac community contributions to the coming Budget.

Isaac Regional Council invites residents to submit Community Budget Bids to be considered for the 201718 financial year.

Mayor Anne Baker said Bids will close in three weeks, on Tuesday January 31.

“This year we’ve made it easier to submit your bid through an online form on Council’s website,” she said.

“Don’t miss your chance to share your ideas with us, to help shape our future.

“It’s our goal to build resilient, connected and vibrant communities.

“While we can’t guarantee all bids will be successful,

your valuable feedback will help Council prioritise projects using the available funds.”

New boardwalk beside a beautiful place to be Clermont residents will enjoy summer by the water with the completion of the Hoods Lagoon boardwalk.

Mayor Anne Baker said the much-anticipated rejuvenation of Hoods Lagoon Boardwalk looks outstanding.

“Hoods Lagoon is a favourite spot among families, locals and tourists – beautiful for a picnic or to just relax and watch the wildlife,” she said.

“The revamped boardwalk is a great asset to the area and I’m sure the new gazebo will be a hit year-round.

“Thank you to everyone for their patience and cooperation while works were underway.”

Local Councillor Lyn Jones said she’s pleased to see the boardwalk delivered to the community on schedule.

“After some unforeseen delays due to striking rock when installing the pillars, I’m excited that this long-awaited project is complete,” she said.

“Along with ongoing upgrades to Centenary Park, this area is once again a wonderful community space, just in time for summer.”

The Hoods Lagoon boardwalk rejuvenation project included removal of existing boardwalks, completion of new western and eastern boardwalks, and construction of a new gazebo structure.

One Million Stars to End Violence Isaac Libraries will host star weaving work stations between August 2016 - July 2017. Everyone from individuals to community groups are invited to join the project and help weave stars.

Help Isaac Libraries reach their goal of 10,000 stars

August 2016 - July 2017 One Million Stars to End Violence is a love and peace filled community project started by Brisbane artist Maryann Talia Pau and supported by Queensland State Government. The goal is to weave one million stars to display at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018.

Modernising the Bush Telegraph - digital upskilling contributed by Prue Lonergan

Belyando Enterprise Network Inc (BENI) has received the Australia Post Our Neighbourhood Community Grant to deliver a free digital program called Modernising the bush telegraph - Digital upskilling.

This grant will fund workshops, webinars and mentoring sessions with our local digital expert, Jess Hodge from Onli Solution.

The program is tailored to small businesses and community groups in rural and remote Queensland.

We know that many businesses and community groups would like to be involved in digital technologies, however, many do not know where to start.

We encourage all businesses and community groups to send someone along to take advantage of this free program that kicks off on 10 February 2017.

BENI connects isolated entrepreneurs to the people, skills and resources that are most appropriate for the successful establishment and growth of their proposed enterprise. Their program empowers people to achieve their dreams and aspirations by harnessing the passion and knowledge of local people.
